THE TYCOON MURDERER is the first book in a new time-travel romance/cozy mystery series set in the Pacific Northwest.
When Josie Matthews buys a Victorian mansion with a notorious past, she hopes to turn it into a successful inn. While she expects all the headaches of renovating an old house, she isn't prepared to be sent back in time to the site of a double-murder which occurred at the mansion in 1929. While the murders were never solved, they were believed to have been committed by Wall Street financier, David Remington, forever known as the Tycoon Murderer.
At the height of the Roaring Twenties, David Remington has invited several friends and acquaintances to a house party, including a Chicago bootlegger and his moll, a Broadway playwright and his best friend, a corrupt U.S. Senator and his wife, a handsome silent screen star and a disgruntled federal agent. After a mysterious woman arrives uninvited, guests start dying one-by-one, making everyone wonder who will be next.
Determined to solve the murders before being sent back to her own time, Josie investigates the crimes and tries not to be the next victim. But the biggest mystery is whether David Remington was falsely accused or whether he truly is the Tycoon Murderer.
THE TYCOON MURDERER is a time-travel romance/cozy mystery with a retro flair. It contains mild violence, humor and a great deal of bootleg booze.

This was an enjoyable character driven mystery story with romantic overtones. Driscoll does a great job of setting up the characters so that you actually care when people are threatened or killed. The time travel aspect is fun and it works well with the story. I am not usually a mystery reader, but this wasn't a generic mystery. This was something more unique and interesting. I think it will definitely appeal to classic mystery fans. But if you are not necessarily a mystery reader, then do give this a chance, because I think you'll get swept up into the story. I really love Driscoll's Regency romances, and while this is different in terms of setting and genre, it has the same attention to relationships and strong heart as her other books. Highly recommended!
A very engrossing time travel cozy mystery. The story takes in the years 2018 and 1929. Josie is renovating a Victorian mansion she has bought with her savings. She is recently divorced from her husband whom she found in bed with her best friend. The Mansion has a history and Josie wants to renovate it back to the time of the infamous murder that took place in 1929. There were two people killed and the assumed murderer disappeared soon after and was never heard from again. Josie thinks the story will bring in guests once she opens the home as an Inn but she wishes she knew the true story. It seems the Fates and nature align and she is transported back to the Roaring Twenties and the infamous party. I loved the book and was enthralled enough to read it in one sitting. The characters and the language match the time periods and each character has a true place in the story. The plot is strong and numerous subplots keep the reader guessing and the action going. I look forward to more of this series.
This was not at all what I was expecting as time-travelling really isn't my thing, but it turned out to be a surprisingly good read with a 1920s theme.
This was so freaking good and so different from other cozy mysteries that I’ve read in the past. For one this had time travel in it where are heroin, Josie traveled back to 1929 to a party, where two murders were set to occur. The twist being that she thought the hero. David was the murderer, and she was trying to prevent that murder from happening, as well as decide whether David was the killer or not. But it was so much more than that that made it incredible. There were so many twists, and turns along the way. There were multiple mysteries. And since this was told in multiple perspectives there were different angles to the story, and especially suspicion on Josie, because she suddenly appeared out of nowhere. And there was just all the stuff going on and it kept you on your toes. There were so many things I didn’t expect. And after a certain point, I couldn’t put it down because I had to know how everything was going to turn out between the murderers, the blackmail, and the time travel. It was quite the ride that was fresh and unique that totally consumed me. I loved it so so much.

Before I say anything about this story, I have to disclose that I've had the privilege to work with this author for sometime now and I've come to love her writing voice. My review of this story is, as is with every book I read regardless of who wrote it and if I've worked on it, totally subjective and honest opinion.
That said, I can truly say that I've loved this story for so many reasons. First, I've been a fan of Time Travel genre ever since I've seen The Time Machine with Rod Taylor and Timeline with Gerard Butler. I've also read Diana Gabaldon's Outlander and Karyn Gerard's Timeless Heart series.
And if none of these sound familiar to you, I have two more movies that I am sure you've seen and that's Kate and Leopold with Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan for one, and please don't tell me you've never seen Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymore in Somewhere in Time. All of these have a time travel in common with one another, but romance and mystery are predominant through all of them.
This is well written and plotted cozy mystery with romance elements. Its main characters are very likable duo of amateur sleuths that I liked from the start. It has an array of very fun and funny secondary characters and a mystery murderer whom I tried to identify from the start and just got it wrong every time.
I also enjoyed the setting of this story in the 1920s as well as the way the time travel occurred. It sounded like a plausible and interesting theory.
If you've never read Maureen Driscoll's stories before, this story would be a perfect time to sample her work. I am sure that you'll have as much fun as I did discovering her writing voice.
I just finished The Tycoon Murderer and LOVED it! I enjoy time travel and I loved the mystery and the fact that is was very well-written and detailed, yet not too scary or gory. I love that it still had a happily ever after ending. I also enjoyed the year, 1929. It made me think so much of my grandparents and I got quite nostalgic.
When Maureen Driscoll wrote this book she is amazing. It is mystery and finally love all wrapped up together. I was so involved that I just couldn’t put it down. Now I wish I could travel back in time.
I liked the back stories, especially the 4 friends. I liked David being a decent man. I got tired of mentioning over and over that everyone was knockdown gorgeous. I liked that the future history was changed. It was fun.
I’m not really sure how this book ended up on my Kindle, but I went on vacation, needed a book to read, and I’m glad I chose this one.
It was an interesting premise, and I liked the use of the 1920s as a setting. Throwing in time travel into this cozy mystery took the book away from the usual plots in the genre, which I liked.
There’s no sex (mentions of it, but not descriptive), almost no profanity, and a sweet storyline. I gave this 4* (I really think it’s 4.8*, but Goodreads doesn’t let us get that specific) because there were some editing issues. In one chapter, all of the characters are referred to by the narration using either their first or last name, but the main character is titled Miss Andrews, even when she was speaking. It didn’t affect the story, but it was jarring because her name was different from everyone else’s. In another place the FBI agent is referred to as Agent Barnes, even though his name is Agent Barker. No editing errors affected the story, but there were enough of them that it was frustrating for me.
An enjoyable cozy mystery with an element of time travel. 2018 newly-divorced Josie is sent back in time through an earthquake-enduced portal while renovating her historical house. She wakes up in 1929 in the middle of a house party thrown by her home's previous owner.
Having researched the history of her home, Josie knows that the "Tycoon Murderer" is about to strike and two of the party guests will soon be killed. Can she stop the murders? And when things don't play out according to the history books who can she trust?
I found the story engaging and had minimal trouble keeping the large cast of characters straight in my head. I am not a huge mystery reader, but time-travel was just the hook I needed to make this really fun for me.
The focus is mainly on solving the crimes, with a side serve of romance between Josie and David.
I enjoyed the read, which brings a young woman from our day back to the Roaring Twenties. A group of people, including a silent movie star, are having a party in a mansion, and the host is suspected, in our day, of murdering one of the guests. But he seems to be pleasant in person. Could there be some mistake, or does the unexpectedly large number of folks being blackmailed have any bearing on the matter? I put my Kindle aside for a few days and when I came back to it I was far less interested in whodunit, and found it hard to keep the names straight. All I cared about was whether the heroine got back to her own time. I suggest reading this in continued stages if possible. This is an unbiased review.
When Josie is unexpectedly yanked back in time to the 1920s, she finds herself at a party made famous by the two murders that occurred during it. Can her knowledge of the future save the victims?
There is plenty to like about this light-hearted mystery/romance/time travel novel. The fun of a luxurious house party in the roaring twenties. Guests ranging from a mobster to an FBI agent. The fish-out-of-water story of a modern woman in a world where women have been voting for fewer than ten years. Ninety-year-old murders that were never solved—and are about to occur again. A heroine attracted to the probable murderer.
Break out the popcorn and settle down to a fun evening!
This book was full of intriguing mystery and fascinating ideas. Josie is a great character and I hope to read more about her. I've never read this author before, but I find her work in this book to be awesome. There are so many wonderful twists in this story that I couldn't imagine who was guilty of what. All of the suspects were so likable, until the end. And the end was very entertaining and unexpected. I loved it.
This is not my "thing." I'm an avid mystery reader, but this was just a bunch of bodies (so many that I got disinterest and couldn't even keep track) -- it was mildly interesting as a time travel novel, but just couldn't get that interested in the story. I like Driscoll's writing style although this one simply didn't engage me. I liked the budding romance and the ending which was anticipated.
This was yet another "new to me" author and I really enjoyed this book. To be honest, I do not usually enjoy time travel stories, mainly because of all the trouble an innocent traveler could cause in any timeline. However, this was still a great story. The plot is easily followed and the characters are fun to get to know. The story is also quite fun to read. I definitely recommend this book
A difficult story: the characters aren't interesting or likable; the heroine is absent through many early chapters to develop the plot line in the past; earth tremor after tremor didn't seem plausible. The contrivance of a clairvoyant dropped into the story made me jump to "Before you go" and leave a warning to other readers.
The characters were magnificent. Each one had such a unique personality. Great plot. It kept you thinking and wondering who was the guilty party. Unexpected ending! Highly recommend this book.
A really great time travel story, filled with uncertainty, murder, and love. It kept me guessing who the murderer was, and I loved the characters. The ending was the best! (I do love a happy ending.)
I absolutely loved this book! Who doesn't love a good murder-mystery? This book was all that and more. The time travel element added a bit of magic to the story. I'll definitely be checking out more from Maureen Driscoll!
This book was a fun read, a really good mystery and an enjoyable love story. The characters were interesting and the idea of traveling back100 years to solve 2 mysterious murders made this book a good read. I highly recommend it.
This story was written in third person and jumps around between all the different characters at the house party. I normally read books written in first person that stick with the heroine’s POV, so it was difficult for me to really get into this. However, I recognize that this book is well written and if you like a cozy mystery, I say go for it.
I very much enjoyed this…as much as Rhys Bowen books! So much humor with some time travel stuff thrown in. The scenes with the local police detective hysterical! I’ll try to read the rest of the series.
On a Sunday morning, my daughters turn to get breakfast & I couldn't put my book down ! I neglected to include Romance ! MS. Driscoll includes it all. What a wonderful book---on to the next one !!
Everyone has secrets, and the people at the house party are no exception. You know part of the story before the party begins. Or do you? Great twists and a great ending.
I absolutely loved this book. I loved the characters and the humour. I really couldn't put it down. What a great story. Definitely one of a kind. A great read for anyone and everyone. I highly reccommend it.
This was a delightful story. One right out of an old movie, really old movie. I loved the cast of characters, even with stereotypes. And I loved the ending that was actually an ending, not an obvious lead in to the next story, or not too obvious. Well done !
This book was wonderful. I loved the mystery of it all and the characters. The 1920’s is one of my favorite time periods. I always wonder what happens after the time travel so I can’t wait to see what’s in book #2.
This time-travel is a delightful story, easy to read on a rainy afternoon. The characters seem realistic. Of course, this is fiction, so the plot doesn’t have to be accurate. But who knows, perhaps it is. All in all, I enjoyed it.
