Someone abandons a pedigree hellcat right where Shax can conveniently claim her and sets off a cataclysmic domino line of events. It's time for the other shoe to drop since the Brimstone has a shadow cabal after them—partly due to Shax's own, er, interesting decisions and partly due to the presence of Agent Julian Parallax onboard.
As ship security officer, Ness has a lot on his mind—a dangerous new pet, even more dangerous criminals tracking the Brimstone, and yet another unexpected rescued guest. The last thing he needs is a distraction and Julian, who confuses and confounds him more every moment, is exactly the distraction he doesn't need. Between Shax's reckless gambits and Julian's disregard for his own safety, how is Ness supposed to keep anyone safe?
The Brimstone and her intrepid crew do all they can to stay one step ahead, but this time the hunters are closing in.
Angel Martinez currently lives part time in the hectic sprawl of northern Delaware and full time inside her head. She has one husband, one son, two cats, a love of all things beautiful and a terrible addiction to the consumption of both knowledge and chocolate.
Angel's alter ego writes the all-ages science fiction - Sandra Stixrude.
When I finished book 5, I was so annoyed with Shax and I really did not like that Julian had become part of the crew. Well, color me surprised that I was actually rooting for the three to get together. And another surprise of finding out that Julian was . I wasn’t expecting that but was pleasantly surprised. I love this unique crew and all the adventures they get into. I’m looking forward to more.
A really fun sci-fi story in the Brimstone universe that got clouded for me due the author's agenda. I know she avidly supports diversity, as do I in RL. I adore this author's books, she's written some of my favorites, but I don't like to get blindsided by something I choose not to read, i.e., polyamory. Not my thing in my fiction. I read MM, 2 gay/bi men. Warn a girl. There was another issue I choose not to discuss in this forum, but I kinda feel like I got something I didn't order. Oh well. I still love her writing; I'll just do a bit more research before I one-click.
In Potato Surprise, a prequel to this series, Shax has a romance with a human, Julian. The rest of the books are about Shax and his love interest Ness. Other major characters feature prominently in some of the books, too. But Julian returned in the last book, and Ness was extremely jealous of his former relationship with Shax. This book resolves that conflict by having Julian and Ness develop feelings for each other. The two of them, along with Shax, become a throuple.
I was hoping the situation would resolve this way, and I'm satisfied with the details. The romance between Julian and Ness is pretty simple, with a hurt/comfort plot, but it's very good. I liked how normal everything seemed, since polyamory is an uncommon concept in romance novels. I also liked that
I've recommended this series to several trans men who were looking for books with trans characters that were not about self-acceptance, because Julian's being trans is a only minor aspect of his character. So, I'm relieved that the author did not change her approach to that topic in this book. Julian has a brief bad dream in which he is deadnamed, but that's the only negative trans-related thing that happens. He does suffer a lot in this book, but it's nothing to do with being trans.
The non-romance plot is a little weak, to be honest, but I read these books for the characters and their romances, and for the cool sci-fi concepts, so I don't mind that.
I don't know if this is the ending of the series. I hope not, because I really like these books!
Another fun adventure and some good romantic plot advancing too. Though I wish there had been even more about the romance. There's obviously some sort of end game events building up.
Angel has given us yet another tale of adventure full of fascinating creatures. There's action, humor, and sex. Fluffy and Three Arms were delightful. I hope we get to see Three Arms again. Looking forward to more adventures with Shax and the crew.
4.25 stars. Very fun space cowboy sci-fi fantasy story with demons, angles, assassins, lawless planets, spaceships, lovers, found family and a drag queen AI ship computer. Seven book series filled with fun circumstances, silly situations and wild solutions. Each book is 100-200 pages so very manageable and very binge-able. I read the series straight through and there was very little recap, so it’s actually a good idea to read them close together, especially after book 4 when the crew expands quickly. There are some smaller stories made into collections that I didn’t read. Book 6 refers to a past holiday party and a space rat addition to the crew that must have happened in the novellas, it left me feeling a bit left out but didn’t hinder the story overall. The novella collections are called “journals”, and their summaries on goodreads present them as something to read after the main books, not in between, which is odd if they’ve introduced a whole new character in there.
Easy to read, easy to follow along with the plots and antics. The book mostly focuses one one main couple for the first few books, but crew members pair off and we get some of their stories and bedroom scenes too, they even take over the POV for some chapters. By book 5, everyone has taken a turn giving their POV here and there. The author does a good job of letting us know whose head we’re in. Spice is mild/medium, only a few scenes but they are detailed. The low heat is offset by the huge personalities and wonderfully imagined adventures.
Space adventure, space travel, futuristic, sci-fi fantasy, demon, angel, cowboy, assassin, shenanigans, medium spice, vers, trans, thruple.
I love this series and this was one of my favourites within the series. The world is fun and interesting, the characters diverse and fascinating, and the plots and sub-plots are creative entertaining. Each book brings something new and delightful and completely unexpected. The narration by Vance Bastian is well done. I love his voice interpretation of the different characters.
Shax and the crew are back on another humorous romp and it's an abandoned kitty that pulls them into trouble this time. Shax just couldn't walk away, Fluffy needed him. LOL. I can't get enough of these characters and their adventures.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I feel like I missed something between the last book and this. I had to go back and check I didn't skip a book, as I couldn't remember anything about a spacer rat. Later also other things are mentioned that's not in the main series, that I guess I need to find somewhere else...
Love the humour, great characters and world building, a bit disappointed about the confusion...
A fun romp with interesting characters. I liked getting to know Julian better. Fluffy was great as were the octopus spacers. Angel Martinez has a great imagination!! I love the whole crew and look forward to the next book!
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review
The latest published adventure (I may weep with impatience while waiting for the next!) for our Brimstone boys and girls (now plural!)! I did manage to miss the bit where Nic showed up, but I swear to hunt this story down! After all, Leopold meeting his grandmother should be a recipe for grand fun!
In any case, people are gunning for Shax and Co. again - one sometimes wonders if there ever is (or was) a time someone, somewhere wasn't. Julian, Ness, and Shax come to new understandings. Several new species, alien and otherwise, are introduced! And in the end Shax going (in a manner speaking) straight has useful benefits for the Brimstone.
Fluffy seems like she fits right in. It's amazing how Angel manages to keep adding new crew members, planets, and species while also managing to make each new and singular. Brava! Now, if I were an awful reader-fiend, I'd demand she write as fast as possible while maintaining the same quality! But I'm not, so I guess much weeping lies in my future.
From that review: I can not get enough of this series and just plain out there group of characters. From pink hedgehogs with their futuristic iPads, cowboys and their horses, imps, the aforementioned millipedes, Nephilims, and more demons, cargos of floating cows, squishy frogs, and so much more, each story more indescribably imaginative and mind bogglingly delightful. Now its demon courser cats. Of course it is.
Shax and Ness and the rest of the crew are back again on another breathtaking adventure. I absolutely adored this book. The characters are like always, likeable and quirky and there's no lack of action. And then there's Fluffy. Who wouldn't love Fluffy? She's perfect!
This is the sixth in a series of six books. Each story is an episode in the life of the 2 space pirates. Each book adds a character or two, to this growing crew of lovers, children and pets. Add in a few aliens and a thug kingpin and you have 6 wonderful stories that will keep you interested in what’s happening next and asking, “How will they get out of this one?”
The entire series were hilarious. I loved each installment but Fluffy was the best part - adding hellcat to a bunch of misfits was a brilliant turn and added both a comic relief and a menacing predator in one swell swoop. Absolutely loved the entire series and will probably re-read them when in need to lighten the mood.
This is more fun on the Brimstone. Martinez continues to write clever funny science fiction. I love her imagination, octopus-like space creatures, who knew.
Red Fluffy helped me through a bit of a tough week. The light-heartedness and humour mixed with some seriousness made it the perfect book for me to relax with.
