THE OTHER CHEEK

Rate this book
He took his vows seriously. So did she. Especially the 'Til Death part... It's 1992, and Rich and Tami have a fantastic future ahead of them as husband and wife: he as a technical expert behind the Hollywood scenes, she an up-and-coming actress. They both have drive and ambition and, knowing life isn't always fair, are willing to tough it out to succeed. But is that enough? Does working in a town run on secrets and backstabbing doom any institution requiring trust and loyalty? On the outside, this beautiful couple present an enviable façade, including their ability to stick it out when the going gets tough. Behind closed doors, however, their struggle includes keeping the noise down so the neighbors aren't privy to the pitched screaming, the hurled objects, and the soul-crushing cage fight happening next door. Complicating matters already far from simple is that the aggressor here is the 105-pound wife against her strong and capable husband, who is all too aware of the stigma surrounding "ordinary" victims of domestic abuse, let alone the male partner. Rich has no intention of being a victim, not in his own estimation and not in the eyes of a society with an aversion to weakness, particularly in those appointed to act as its protectors. Will Rich's closely-held secret result in his demise or will he escape the cycle of abuse--and at what cost?

The Other Cheek by Jafe Danbury throws light on the existing but ignored aspect of domestic violence. This book challenges us to see the vice of domestic violence from a broader perspective.

Often we believe that in a failed marriage, it is only the female counterpart who could be a victim. However, there can be cases where the male counterpart happens to be on the receiving end. Such cases remain unknown for the men are afraid to speak up and admit their weakness. The men fail short of admitting their incapability to put up a fight. That’s what society taught them. That’s what they follow for their entire lives.

This book has two central characters - Rich and Tami. The two are presumably happily married. But behind the doors, there is a vicious cycle of violence that plays out as and when Tami doesn’t find things right. The book elaborates on the mentally ill wife hitting her husband and the charade goes on for as long as 4-5 years or maybe longer. The husband, Rich, is bruised, hurt, and is hurting even more as he tries to please his wife. But how long this act would keep him down and beaten?

Jafe has woven a page-turner incorporating the elements of thrill and suspense. In the first few pages, it seems that life would be smooth for Rich and Tami. But after reading a bit more, I stumbled upon a psychologically disturbed character of Tami who wants to fulfill all her demands. And when her desires remain unmet, she gets violent and abusive. Jafe has done a great job at bringing forth a story that lurks in the shadows, waiting to come out. But it stays in the dark out of fear and shame.

I loved how realistic this book turned out to be. Its authenticity comes from the fact that nowhere, I found it going overboard. In fact, the story remained true to its intent and shook me. It also strengthened my faith in the belief that not all that appears is true. There could be something more malicious and horrifying beneath the surface.

Welcome to Freakish Friday, my Fellow Book Dragons. This week’s Gem is freakish indeed. A fine crystal like substance, it looks as though running water had stopped, see the bubbles? It refracts the light off the bubbles. Hold it in One’s claw and you feel waves of sadness and fear and something like hysteria if you hold it too long. See? I told you, best if you hand it back. Yes, just drop it in the silk purse it came in. I told you it was freakish. This is Gem Maker Jafe Danbury’s “The Other Cheek”.

What happens when a nice young prince finds out the beautiful princess he married, is not a princess at all, but a Harpy, a raging, shrieking, monstrous beastie who steals food and sleep and self? If this were a Grimm’s Faery Tale it would be so, but it’s not. Richie meets Tami and they fall in love, well Richie falls in love. Tami is already in love…with Tami. They are not married very long when Tami begins to change and not for the better.

She is spoiled and self-centered. She wants everything. She wants it all. Rich is a hard working freelance cameraman making a decent living in Hollywood, but he can’t keep up with all of Tami’s demands and one fine day Tami cuts loose. Tami hits Rich. It is the first in a long line of domestic violence acts.

I loved this book. It is honest, not over the top, and real. Female on Male Domestic Violence does happen. Most men do not report it. Whether out of shame, fear of being arrested, losing his children or his job, fear of his spouse’s retaliation, or whatever other factor is involved most men choose to live with it until someone gets hurt or dies. Many times the woman is much smaller than the man. This is not cartoon land where the woman is far larger than her spouse. These women understand the man will not strike back or if he does try to defend himself, she can show officers a bruise or mark and he will be labeled the offender. It happened to a good friend of mine. By the time his 5’5″, 110 lb wife was done, he’d had several broken bones, 3rd degree burns and lost his home, his job and his children. Danbury strikes the nail on the head with this one.

Tami is a Harpy straight from Hell and needs sent back there as soon as possible. Does Richie live through it? Does Tami? Who goes to jail? You’ll have to read it to find out. And you won’t be sorry you did. I would give a copy of this to the guy in your life about to start dating. Maybe to the guy you suspect is in a similar situation. This is for women, too. For every women who has a man she loves in her life! This is Danbury’s debut novel, and I dare say we will be reading much more from him in future, at least I hope so!

Remember, this is the last night to get in on the Karen McQuestion “Dovetail” giveaway over on my Facebook Page! Until tomorrow, I remain, your humble Book Dragon,

As a domestic violence survivor myself I understand the fear, the need and desire to “fix” what can not be fixed. Jafe Danbury it breaks my heart that anyone has to go through a nightmare such as this. It is no easy feat to tell one’s story either. To allow the public into your personal world and allow them to view your pain is commendable. I grateful you found Rebecca and she was able to resintill the Rich that the beginning of the book pre Tami. You have a wonderful family and they are an absolutely wonderful example of having your families back. What Scott especially did in this book, is beyond being an waning brother. I’m glad you found your happiness. For people who haven’t been in this situation thank Allah for that blessing.

The Other Cheek is a compelling and well written novel that presents an unexpected twist to the #metoo topic. Our hero enjoys his life as a camera operator (in and out of Hollywood) and his marriage (seemingly) is the icing on his cake. His only fault is perhaps being a bit too tolerant of his new wife’s sometimes demanding nature. The novel flows easily with comfortable prose and a perfect pace. Though Danbury may have written prior fiction, as a first published piece it is quite impressive. I started the novel hoping and expecting to like it but was pleasantly surprised to LOVE it and wanting to reread as soon as I finished. Will look forward, with great anticipation, to Mr. Danbury’s next literary offering. I highly recommend The Other Cheek to anyone who enjoys fiction or simply a “Good Read”.

This is the author’s first novel (and hopefully not the last one). I love his very unique style of writing! The topic is very serious, of course, but there are “laugh out loud” moments where the author shows a great sense of humor even in sad situations. There a lot of songs mentioned in this book, you will not get those out of your head! The description of the characters is awesome and very vivid. You can’t help falling in love with Rich, the main character. I couldn’t put the book down. Must read!

A dive into a victim's horrific depths of confusion and despair inflicted by a malignant narcissistic abuser. Powerful and immersive, you'll be right there with Richie the whole way through. Well written, everything flows and manages time lapses and tangents perfectly.

I'd recommend to anyone, but particularly men who are survivors of domestic abuse and those who might care to understand how men can be victims too.

Would love to read more from Jafe!

I purchased this book because of the amazing reviews on Amazon and oh boy, they were all right. Such a good book
with great characters that keeps you obsessed with every page since the first one. I couldn't put this down until I ended. The story is fantastic, so real and shocking. This kind of domestic abuse happens! Mans are abused by their wifes and we do not talk about it! I think everyone should read this and become aware of this problem.

The suspense builds to the point where my heart was beating so fast I had to put down the book and take a few deep breaths. Danbury moves the story along through his strategic use of dialogue, cogent details and story structure. He captures the sense of hopelessness and helplessness suffered by victims of abuse by “loved ones”.

Edited to add this is based on true events. I admire the author’s braveness in putting his life story out there! I didn’t realize it was based on true events when I read it.

Possible spoilers

This is an eye opening book. It reminds us that women can also be abusers in a relationship. Rich thinks he met the woman of his dreams. Sadly for him, that’s not the case. Soon his wife is isolating him from his friends and family. Once she becomes violent, Rich becomes a broken man. Will he ever be free?
I liked how this book was set in the 90s. Without social media it makes it harder for Rich to stay connected to his family and friends and to ask for help. I wish we got more of an ending with Tami and maybe some more dramatic scenes where she wins Rich back or there’s a false escape from her. Overall a good debut novel.

I've never read a book before from the man's point of view on domestic violence. I was moved, angered and saddened that this is happening while I'm reading this story. Thankfully Richie had the courage with a lot of persuasion from his family to speak out and get out. I hope others will read this and have the strength to do the same. Thank you for sharing this story and book with me. I couldn't rate this book anything other than 5⭐

This book has every ingredient to sweep you off your feet. The storyline behind this book is so amusing I couldn't stop myself from getting my hands on this masterpiece. In this turbulent world, it can be lovely to use books as an escape, to read about a different world with different problems, and maybe forget about your own for a while.

This story is basically focuses on the couple - Rich and Tami. A couple which looks like a perfect pair but the reality was quite different, nobody knows the actual truth of their relationship. In the first few pages, it seems that life would be super exciting for Rich and Tami. But as the story progresses, I realised that Tami has a psychologically disturbed mind which created a lot of problems in their relationship. It was not a happy marriage for Rich, he was a victim of domestic violence. When we hear the word Domestic Violence, the image of a woman suffering reflect in our mind but here the victim was a man. That's the reason why I decided to read this book because the message and the storyline of this book is really unique.

I loved everything about this book. I just wish it had been a little more longer because my heart wanted to read more and more. After reading every page, I was curious to jump on to the next. Great characters and the storyline is different and engaging Worth reading!

I read this book all at one time, every time that I went to put it down, something else started. I loved this book for it's unforgettable characters, mystery and suspense. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. If you are looking for a great read, add "The Other Cheek" to your list. The author left no stones unturned when writing this unforgettable page-turner story.

We often hear about domestic violence, and we encourage women to stand up against it. We back them up when they need support and confidence. But in a male-dominated world, most of the time, women are the victims. And the men who have been abused similarly by their female partners are left in the shadows. Either people are not ready to believe them. Or the men choose not to let society see them as a sufferer or perceive them as weak. The same is the case with our protagonist Rich.

Rich and Tami looked like the perfect couple by the world. They seemed happy and content. But what went in behind closed doors remained inside, with the fear of getting judged. Or shame of looking weak in front of the wife that you're supposed to be protecting. Tami is a mentally disturbed character who gets violent when her demands do not get met. And Rich is hurt, physically and mentally, while keeping it all in and maintaining a facade for the world to see. He has kept his head down for a long time now, trying to please his wife somehow, somewhere, hoping for things to get better, but how long can this go on?

This book is a page-turner with a daring plot and intense characters with an edge to them. The author is imaginative and original with his writing and throws light on many things that society hides from us. The way he has shaped both of these characters is just remarkable. I highly admired this book and would say everyone should pick it up to read and look at some harsh realities that we ignore. The story baffles me and makes me realize that horrifying secrets lie behind the happy faces of people we see every day. It's a must-read!

When we talk about domestic violence, the first thing comes to our mind is a woman because we often think that Women are Victims of domestic Violence. But what if we hear that the victim of Domestic Violence is a Man. Of course we're gonna laugh because the general perception is that men can't be the victim of Violence. This book talked about the domestic abuse that is least discussed in a society.
This book is about a couple, Rich and Tami, who seems a Perfect couple in front of the world, but who knows what is happening behind the doors. Tami is an up-and-coming actress and Rich is a freelance cameraman. Tami is an abusive, arrogant, egoistic, spoiled, self-centred and mentally disturbed character. She being a mentally ill wife hit her husband and that too continues for 4-5 years and even more.

The first few pages made us feel that Rich and Tami are perfect couple, ambitious and living a smooth life but after a few more pages, you will see a different side of Tami who proves to be an arrogant, mentally ill character who wants to fulfill all her demands and she gets violent when her demands remain unmet.I feel sorry for Rich, who remain silent for years to please his wife.

Jafe Danbury has done a great job talking about the existing but ignored topic of society. Because often Violence against Men is not recognised by law. Abuse against man is no laughing matter.

The language used is lucid. The story is outstanding with great characters. It will engage you till end. I highly recommend this book. Read it and become aware of such problems in our society.

Great read!

This was not a difficult read and the story flowed well. I found myself caught up in the characters quickly and kept wanting to see what came next. Heartbreaking to know this man suffered for so long alone, and the abusive character isn’t hard to dislike! Great read if you are looking for one, and eye opening to what can happen when abuse goes the other way. Well done, Jafe!

The other cheek

Just finished my second book (his first novel), The Other Cheek, by Rafe Danbury. It is a very straight forward book about your couples and domestic violence. I read it over two days and couldn’t wait to see the outcome.

Rafe is a new writer, Navy Veteran, with a great control over his thoughts. You will enjoy his second novel, Leaving Phoenix, too. It really tracks and has a quite novel ending.

Great job Rafe!

Rich and Tami had a beautiful wedding, a fabulous honeymoon and a nice home to move into, but their marriage went downhill from the beginning, a result of unknown mental problems. This book will make readers aware of hidden domestic violence abuse in some marriages. Reading this book inn would benefit anyone living in a marriage and help them to have the courage to get out of it. The Other Cheek was a finalist in the Indie Awards and deserves the honor.

Captivating

To read this book and know that it is based on some truths was captivating. When you think of DV you always think of man on woman never the opposite. This story is well written and shows how the man feels when roles are reversed. Jafe is a great writer

Oh! My! Gosh! This book was a page turner from page one to the very last. Mr. Danbury is an exceptional storyteller who draws the reader in and won't let go. This book is unputdownable.

Mr. Danbury writes the personal experience of a deeply sensitive and often overlooked topic: the abuse of men by their partners. This heart-wrenching narrative follows Rich, a man trapped in an abusive marriage, as he navigates the complex emotions and societal stigmas that accompany his silent suffering. One of the standout features of Mr. Danbury's writing is his ability to weave wit and humor into an otherwise oppressive topic. This clever use of humor provides much-needed relief amidst the tension, allowing readers to engage with the story on multiple levels. Danbury's wit serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength that can be found even in the darkest of circumstances. It's like sometimes we have to laugh even though it's not funny. Sometimes a way of self survival.

"The Other Cheek" is a courageous work that addresses a critical issue with honesty and sensitivity. His skillful writing, combined with his use of humor and analogies, makes this book an engaging and enlightening read. It is a testament to the complexity of human emotions and the strength required to confront societal stigmas and the strength it takes to claw out of what seems like hopelessness.

Mr. Danbury's books are must reads for me. His descriptive narrative puts me in the pages of the books and he connects me to the characters so that I feel their emotions, experience their situations, and creates a bond with them. It was difficult in places but he gives hope to those who might find themselves in similar situations. I want to thank Mr. Danbury for the honor of reading this book. All opinions and thoughts in this review are my heartfelt own.

I was assigned this author in a book group so I can expand what I read. So I went into this book totally blind. Having suffered domestic abuse, this author defined everything perfectly. I hope the ex wife got the mental health help she desperately needs. I truly hope the author is living his best life as I found out this story is true and hugs to you sir! ⚠️Domestic abuse

This book was incredibly well-written! It's the first time I've read a domestic abuse story from a man's perspective, and I'm really glad Jafe Danbury explored that angle. Many men experience abuse from women, but they often feel too ashamed or embarrassed to report it. It's time to break this stigma.

Richie endured both mental and physical abuse from his wife for about 2 to 3 years. She wore him down in every possible way until he became a broken man, a mere shell of his former self.

Jafe skillfully evoked empathy for Richie. I felt his anguish deeply, and it also stirred up anger within me.

Knowing that this was Jafe's own story, I appreciate the strength it took for him to write it. I hope it provided some closure for him.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone—definitely check it out!

This book by Jafe Danbury was hard to put down! I couldn't wait to get back to it, it really kept me engaged. He has a gift for writing that is evident as you read the book.

The author was a colleague of my late husband's so it had a personal connection for me. I especially enjoyed the references to the video/film industry and his attention to detail in naming the specific equipment used on the various gigs that the character, Rich Bryson, was involved with, and also the responses and behaviors of the crew people on the various freelance jobs that "Rich" took, since my husband also worked as a freelancer in that industry. Jafe Danbury's description of the shoots brought back so many familiar stories I would often hear from my husband--the meals consisting of pizza (if the production company was on a shoestring budget), or nice meals and nice hotels if it was a higher-budget production. I appreciated the "bookend" style ending and the author's use of examples of his character's kind-hearted nature, as illustrated with Rich's "rescuing" a drowning ladybug in the pool where he was relaxing.

Although the topic is a very sensitive one and spousal abuse of the husband is not as prevalent as abuse of the wife, the author manages to tell the story with humor generously sprinkled in. I also enjoyed the many song references that fit the moment. He paints his character as a gentle, sensitive and compassionate man who was raised to love, cherish, and be loyal to his wife, therefore finding it difficult to get out from under her clutches as she becomes more unhinged in her behavior. I loved reading this book and I highly recommend it!

This is one of the best books I am proud to have occupying one of my many bookshelves. I cannot recommend this gripping tale highly enough and am confident I will return to this book again and again for its emotional depth and brutal honesty.

Based on the author's own experiences, this book delivers a startlingly raw portrayal of an often overlooked kind of spousal abuse: abusive wives. Battling the stigma against male victims as well as his wife's seemingly random violence, the protagonist embarks on a journey that will ultimately change his life forever- as well as how he understands the true definition of love.

Rich, working behind the scenes in Hollywood, falls victim to the abuse of his wife, Tami, shortly after their marriage. Becoming increasingly emotionally unstable, Tami inflicts devastating physical, psychological, and emotional abuse upon Rich. The book depicts Rich's journey to identify this behavior as both unhealthy and abusive, as well as accepting that he is a victim of abuse who needs the help of his family and friends to find safety and wellbeing elsewhere.

Beyond inspiring, this novel shook me to my core and left an impression deep within my soul. Never before have I read such an honest retelling of a personal journey to face such demons, both external and internal. I am in awe of the author's bravery and talent; I am incredibly grateful for the publication of this book (as well as his second novel, "Leaving Phoenix,") and the honor of sharing in the author's experiences.

The Other Cheek

This story of domestic violence is an unusual one in which the victim is the male half of the relationship. While female abusers in domestic relationships are not uncommon (estimated at around 25%), The Other Cheek is one of very few books I've read that addresses the subject.

The main character Rich meets a beautiful woman, Tami, falls in love with her and they marry. Tami claims to be an actress, although a struggling one, and Rich is a successful freelance camera operator and director in Hollywood. Tami exhibits signs of mental illness from the beginning of their marriage, hears voices and talks to herself. They buy a townhouse, Tami does very little to contribute, and she spends most of her time buying products she sees on tv. Rich takes his marriage vows very seriously and battles through years of mental and physical abuse from Tami.

The Other Cheek is Danbury's debut novel, but it is written so well you'd think he had numerous books under his belt. It's serious and compelling, addressing a subject that doesn't receive enough attention, yet is compulsively readable. I've now read all three books Danbury has written to this point and all three come with my highest recommendation. He has become a must-read author for me and I can' t wait for his next one!

Really good! This was his debut? Wow. I don’t usually read too much about a book before I go in to read it, but I knew a little bit about this one and you learn a lot by looking at the cover. It is the authors own story and at times when I’m gasping, it crossed my mind oh my goodness this actually happened to him. This is a story that needs to be told. Jafe was very brave to be sharing the it. It was a great read, and I plan to read more by this author. I read this on Kindle Unlimited. I thank the author for adding it to the library. I’m thinking of buying a copy of this and adding it to my physical bookshelf, even though I prefer to read on a Kindle I do enjoy buying new books and supporting new authors and seeing the physical evidence of what I have read.

One other thing I loved about this book was it was set in the 90s. Which was both nostalgic and made me feel old! Does anyone still own a pager? How about a home phone with an answering machine some days I think we should go back to that. 😜
I definitely could see this being a big movie ! 🍿 🎬🎥🎬

I almost put The Other Cheek down, but I'm so glad I kept reading!
Rich and Tami seem like the ultimate Power Couple, on the outside of their home. Inside however, Tami becomes the one with all the power. Rich stays because he has been trained that he's the guy, and he can take it! He's been trained that the abused are women. He's been trained that "For Better or For Worse" includes anything that his wife dishes out, and to turn THE OTHER CHEEK. This is a heart wrenching tale of learning what is "LOVE" and when to let it (whatever "it" is) go.
As parents, we often teach our boys that they need to take care of the "weaker" sex, and that they are the protectors. What happens when they need protection? We don't always teach our boys that sometimes they need to take care of themselves first. And, how to go about it, before it's too late.
Thought provoking! Well done Jafe! If I could have given The Other Cheek more than 5 stars, I would have!
