During his career, he did it all: worked in narcotics, served on FBI-sponsored violent crimes teams, and was cross-sworn as a US Marshall, pursuing murder suspects and bank robbers in Arizona, Nevada, and California. Putnam did two tours on the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s SWAT team. He also has experience in criminal intelligence and internal affairs and has supervised corrections, patrol, and a detective bureau. In Hawaii, Putnam was a member of the real-life Hawaii Five O, serving as Special Agent for the Attorney General investigating smuggling and white-collar crimes.

Great book, but I might be just a tad biased. The story is based on a fencing sting where the crooks (who are really cops) sell stolen property to other crooks. Bruno Johnson uses the operation as a cover to search for the truth in what really happened to his daughter. This is the fourth and last prequel.

This is the second book that I’ve read in the Bruno Johnson series, and if you haven’t acquainted yourself with him, well you’re missing a real treat.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy, Bruno Johnson, is working undercover on an illegal gun sting this time around. Meanwhile, his close friend Judge Connors and his wife are gunned down, murdered in cold blood, and this is something that Bruno won’t let go, he’s going to find the perpetrator, and they’re gonna pay for it.
Bruno is a real tough guy who doesn’t play by the rules, but he also has a soft and endearing side to him - he loves his family unconditionally, and will do whatever it takes to protect them, but he’s been unable to help his daughter Olivia, and is now living with the consequences of that. In addition, one of his twin grandsons has gone missing. It would take a heart of stone not to recognise the grief and anguish that he struggles with - everything that life can throw at him, it does!
Let me say right now, I found it really difficult to put this one down. The author rips into the story right from the word go, and doesn’t let up - portraying a character trying to regain his grip on a life suddenly turned upside down, but you know something? Bruno Johnson is fast becoming one of my favourite protagonists.
The action was truly authentic (check out the author’s career within Law Enforcement!) It’s tense and relentless, but there were some poignant moments too between Bruno and his Dad, as Bruno finally discovers what happened to the mother who walked out and left him and his father when he was a baby. Then there’s the special bond between Bruno and his dog ‘Junior Mint’. As an animal lover, I found this particularly moving, and it made me love Bruno even more. Can’t wait to meet up with him again in the future. Without a shadow of doubt, this one comes highly recommended!

Cold-Blooded
The Ruthless is a crime thriller with a gritty authenticity that is at home in the unforgiving battle between crime and law enforcement. An engrossing plot and complex characters ensure that this novel is hard to put down. This is the eighth book in the Bruno Johnson series and while I now wish I’d read the previous books, I don’t feel I was short-changed reading this out of order. Bruno Johnson is a Los Angeles County Deputy Sherriff, resourceful and tough, who relentlessly pursues answers and justice regardless of the cost.
Bruno is working undercover as Karl Higgins on a gun sting operation that is being run out of Transworld Freightliners. The transition into this underground role has left him keeping secrets from those close to him and appearing to have broken faith with those that knew him from law enforcement. Just as things are heating up in the sting, he learns that his old friend Judge Connors and his wife are murdered in a brutal shooting. Initial investigation raises issues and now the obligation to see this through to find the killer has him hooked.
Bruno’s family situation is an unremitting stream of tragedy and heartbreak. His teenage daughter, Olivia, is found dead from an apparent heroin overdose, and one of her twins has disappeared. Bruno’s intuition is that her thug partner Derek Sams is responsible and knows where his grandson is, or what has happened to him. Sams is currently in the middle of a trial that Bruno is trying to keep tabs on.
With three main crime strands being developed I worried that it may be too much to maintain a balance, but they are wonderfully plotted and add to the sense of a relentless and committed role Bruno plays with his job. It is not surprising with the amount of stress and tragedy he endures, that psychological strain will surface. Bruno talks to his father for support and this provides the perfect counterbalance to the damage and bitterness that has dominated. The relationship Bruno and his father have brings a dimension to the story that adds colourful depth and background, with the sharing of advice, concern and the telling of how Bruno’s mother walked out on them when he was a child, resonates with his own partner and daughter.
I wasn’t surprised to learn that David Putnam had been in law enforcement for a large part of his career, as he pulls on all the authentic terminology and methods imaginable. The dialogue is clever and distinctive and creates a uniquely dark yet hopeful atmospheric thriller that captivates with great assurance in this unforgettable novel.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy Bruno Johnson a.k.a. Karl Higgins, has been working undercover on an illegal gun sting. No one in his life knows what he is up to. Many believe he has turned his back on his career in law enforcement. He is walking that delicate step between keeping himself safe, his family safe, getting close to criminals and keeping secrets. Bruno has a lot on his plate which is about to get fuller when he learns that his friend, Judge Connors and his wife have been murdered. As Bruno navigates the cold (hot) hard streets of Los Angeles, he must remain ruthless, courageous, alert and tough as nails. This is a gritty and realistic book about a man pushed to his limits, trying his best, while kicking some you-know-what. I loved how the author used his personal knowledge and experience in law enforcement to create a realistic, believable and gritty world. His author's note at the end is not to be missed!
Another plus is how he blended his two storylines - that of the fencing sting and the one about Bruno's daughter Olivia and her twins together. I knew eventually that they would blend and collide somehow and as they say, it all comes together in the end.
Bruno inhibits a violent brutal world which is shown not only in the dialogue, but in the scenes and locations in which the book takes place. I love when environments and locals also become characters in this book. You can almost feel the heat coming off the pavement, feel the street breathing and feel weighed down by the tension in the air. Crime is not pretty, and neither is the crime in this book. This book is raw, realistic and riveting. I found it to be well written, dark and riveting. I love a good gritty crime novel and "The Ruthless" does not disappoint!
I have no doubt that those who enjoy crime novels will enjoy this one. You can tell by the title that this is the eighth book in the series, but it is the first one I have read, and it did work beautifully as a stand-alone book for me. Plus, it has a dog named Junior Mint in it - that is reason alone to pick this one up. Dogs are always the best characters!

THE RUTHLESS by David Putnam earned 5 high-caliber stars!
MY TEASE…
As an LA undercover deputy sheriff, all Bruno Johnson really wants is to enforce “blood and bone” (lethal retribution) on the thug named Derek Sams. As his daughter Olivia’s former boyfriend and father of her two sons, Derek knows more than he’s saying about Olivia's death and her missing son Albert. Bruno’s gut tells him Derek had a hand in both. And now with Derek’s release from prison for a different crime, the thug is threatening to get custody of Bruno’s only surviving grandson Alonzo.
The thought of blood and bone is what keeps Bruno out of the crosshairs of depression.
If only the criminals in LA would ease up and let Bruno focus on his directed target (Derek). But dealers keep dealing. Killers keep killing. And the street’s “eye for an eye” mentality continues to settle scores with violence.
Will Bruno ever get his blood and bone on the thug who cost Bruno his daughter and grandson? And could the drive for retribution turn Bruno into a hardcore criminal—one of The Ruthless?
THOUGHTS…
Bruno Johnson is a protagonist to love. Although emotionally wounded, he is brave, extremely loyal, thoughtful, and mostly level-headed. In addition, I really enjoyed Bruno’s relationship with his father and dog!
The author was also an expert at developing Bruno’s sidekicks. While Bruno is the thoughtful and measured turtle (figuratively speaking!), Putnam paired him with ramped-up rabbits, creating an engaging contrast. His sidekick on the streets, Nigel, is a meth addict who doesn’t know Bruno is an undercover cop. An oddly endearing character, Nigel is beyond fidgety, never able to sit still or stay focused. Then there is Wicks, Bruno’s old boss in the violent crimes division. Wicks is a loose cannon, as well as an adrenaline junkie, who typifies…shoot first and ask questions later.
I really appreciated the “voices” in this story. They felt so authentic.
One observation: There were many names in this book! I easily remembered the core characters. The criminals, however, had a real name and a street name so sometimes I was like…wait…is Sammy Ray…Little Genie or Jumbo? Even Bruno had an undercover name: Karl Higgins. I’m guessing this practice is authentic to the streets, but double names in the story made it challenging sometimes. For criminals who were secondary characters, their street name would’ve been sufficiently helpful for me.
In terms of the ending, closure for some story elements was implied versus acted out and wrapped up. I’m thinking this style might be consistent with other endings in the series. For example, the details (I was seeking at the end) might be part of the opening to the next book?
By the way, I did not feel at a disadvantage by not having read the series installments before THE RUTHLESS. However, wanting those “closure details” serves as a motivator for continuing with the series! Well done!

'The Ruthless' by David Putnam was a very satisfying read!
Bruno Johnson is an LA County Sheriff Deputy currently working undercover with the LA Police Department on an illegal gun sting. His boss and others in the Sheriff's Department believe Bruno has lost his job, gone off the rails and headed into not so good territory. They have no idea he is working undercover. Even his father is concerned about Bruno's current state of mind.
Bruno has a multitude of personal issues! He's edgy....a bit violent when pushed too far. He knows this about himself and is working hard to stay in check! He's both devoted to his work and desperately trying to hold his family and his life together. His relationship with his father brings him solace and yet he can't risk being completely honest with him.
I have to be honest, Police Procedural and Crime Thrillers are not my genres. However, my goal this year is to dip my toe in the waters outside my comfort zone. To purposely explore what's out there and be a bit (gulp)...brave!
I have learned a few something's in reading this book:
1.) Being brave is worth it!
2.) Police/Crime Thrillers are....well, thrilling!
3.) This author knows how to create stories and he knows how to develop strong characters! WOW!
My preference will always be a slow burn where there are supportive back stories and characters that are fully developed. Characters that you feel you know, become invested in and care about. I found all of this to be true of this book.
This is the eighth book in the Bruno Johnson series and it's the first one I had the pleasure to read. It's truly a standalone as I had no trouble immediately catching up to the status of this series.
Bruno Johnson is so gosh darn likeable! You understand right away he knows his stuff as a seasoned deputy. But, it's his softer side that I connected with so deeply. He seems to gain breath and life in his discussions with his father. And, who doesn't love a character who names his dog 'Junior Mint'?
It is also clear this author has leaned on his expertise from his career in law enforcement to bring authenticity to this series. I love when an author uses real-life moments as part of a story and shares those connections with the reader in an 'Afterword' section. Nice touch, David Putnam!
I highly recommend this book to everyone who reads! Everyone!

This is the eighth book in the Bruno Johnson series and it's the first one I had the pleasure to read. It's truly a standalone as I had no trouble immediately catching up to the status of this series.
Bruno Johnson is so gosh darn likeable! You understand right away he knows his stuff as a seasoned deputy. But, it's his softer side that I connected with so deeply. He seems to gain breath and life in his discussions with his father. And, who doesn't love a character who names his dog 'Junior Mint'?
It is also clear this author has leaned on his expertise from his career in law enforcement to bring authenticity to this series. I love when an author uses real-life moments as part of a story and shares those connections with the reader in an 'Afterword' section. Nice touch, David Putnam!
I highly recommend this book to everyone who reads! Everyone!

I am fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of David Putnam’s “The Ruthless”. This is my first exposure to protagonist Bruno Johnson whom Putnam has written a whole series about. Putnam intentionally makes his novels easily read as standalones. Reading this one, which is 8th in the series, whetted my appetite to look into the other novels. If you are a fan of Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch, you will enjoy Bruno. I cannot wait to give this to my husband and then to fellow Bosch lovers.
In this novel, Bruno is undercover, so deep undercover that his father and his prior partner don’t know. The undercover sting is interesting. Putnam is a former law enforcement officer, which adds authenticity to the complicated sting. I enjoyed reading about the inner sanctum of undercover police stings. While working his clandestine job, Bruno’s grandson goes missing, his daughter dies, and his other grandson is in the care of the Department of Social Services. Bruno has much on his plate between his work and his personal life.
Bruno is a bit rogue so his undercover work suites his personality. It’s fun to read about his antics. Putnam does a fabulous job of character development in that I truly hated the bad guys. It’s a sign of a great author when you feel such strong feelings about characters. Putnam also does a fantastic job filling the reader in on Bruno’s past life…just enough to most likely remind those who’ve read the previous ones, and to pique interest in first time readers. There’s a lot of history that makes me want to read the previous novels.
As with all police procedurals, one cannot get too much into the plot without wrecking it for those who haven’t finished the story. What I can say is Bruno, as a character, is one the reader is sympathetic to and enjoys when he goes a bit off the rails. Bruno wants to be good, but he does understand the criminal element (and uses it to his policing advantage). I shall add that the last 40-50 pages are so full of action and intrigue that you can’t read them fast enough.
It’s a 5 star police procedural novel.

Never before has an author looked more deeply at the personal problems that are unique to those in law enforcement; BJ is on a tightrope trying to juggle his personal/professional life - no safety net and lots of people wanting him to fall hard. David Putnam continues to shock and delight readers as BJ tries to contend with an ever growing 'ripple' of criminality that he just can't dodge - great 'stay at home' read.

I have to say that this book disrupted my entire daily schedule; it was a terrific read and I could hardly put it down. The ingenious twists and turns, the realistic colorful characters, all intricately layered to serve up a rough and tumble story. Thank you Mr. Putman.

Wow, I’m not even sure where to start here. First of all, I don’t tend to read crime books because they don’t hold my attention very well. That is not the case with this book. So for me, that says a lot for this awesome novel.
Second, I love the characters. They are so very real and I can’t help but feel for them while rooting for Bruno and dreaming of punching the bad guys in the gullet. That may just be me, but I couldn’t help it. This is the first Bruno Johnson book I’ve read (so far!!!) and I had no trouble at all following along. So it definitely works as a standalone novel.
Third, the action is spectacular! I was enthralled by every scene, and drawn along with the ultimate question: who done it. Obviously, the fact that the author, David Putnam actually went through similar situations, made this such a believable story!! I seriously had to flip through and see if this was real stuff he was writing about. And it’s not too far off to say parts of it were real. Very frightening thought. And tons of people in the world just plain suck. Don’t forget to read the author’s note at the end!! It’s super interesting.
Fourth, this book is funny too. I couldn’t help but chuckle along at times. I really loved how there was some comic relief in the right moments.
To sum it up, I laughed, I cried, I got ticked off at the bad guys, and enjoyed every minute. I recommend this all the way to those who enjoy books about crime, action, family, and guessing what was going to happen next. This was fast paced, but it was written so smoothly that I didn’t have trouble keeping up. But now, I need to find out what happens next to Bruno!!!! I’m not going to give spoilers, but let’s just say, even though it’s not really a cliffhanger, you’re still going to want to read on to follow Bruno in his next adventures!!! So do yourself a favor and read this book. It’s just too good to pass up!!!

This was certainly an action-packed police thriller! Loved all the police jargon and the great local dialogue. The characters were well drawn and the dialogue, as I said before, had a ring of authenticity. David Putnam has drawn on his many years in the police force: readers don't have to suspend their disbelief - this is how true crime goes down. in L.A.
Bruno Johnson is undercover to nab a ring of gun runners, but he is hurting badly: Bruno's daughter, Olivia died by an overdose and his grandson, Alonzo, is taken away by social services when Bruno goes too far while questioning a lead. No one knows that he is still working with the LA Sheriff's department, so he has no way to stop Alonzo from going into foster care. Bruno is paying a big price for this undercover assignment. At the very end of the novel, in a shocking twist, we learn just how big of a sacrifice Bruno and his loved ones have paid because of his job.
Obviously, Bruno will be back because this ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. No spoilers here, but Bruno takes a fatal action to cover for someone else's sins. What will become of Bruno? I suppose we will all have to wait for the next installment! Well written and keeps your attention throughout. Highly recommended!

I was under the assumption that police procedurals were strictly plot-driven. And yes, this book had several intersecting plot lines that provided plenty of action throughout the book, which made it a fast read. But it is also has beautifully crafted characters written by an author who understands law enforcement. Bruno has such depth, as shown in the tender relationship with his father and grandson to the tough-guy persona he uses on the street.
I also admired Putnam’s use of snappy dialogue, which rings with authenticity. It’s also crafted to move the story along. There’s no wasted or empty dialogue in this story.
This was the first book I’ve read in the Bruno Johnson series. It was well-crafted enough to be a stand-alone book. I’ll definitely look for more from this author.

Anyone remember the great older mysteries tough guy police/detectives of years ago. Bruno Johnson has so many problems and tragedies it would stagger any man. His daughter has been murdered, one of his twin grandsons is missing, the live in boy friend is a thug of the first degree and a superior judge and wife were brutally murdered - fast paced and following the traces of all the characters was greatly interesting.

David Putnam spent a lot of years in law enforcement, as a deputy sheriff, detective, SWAT team member and much more. So you can rest assured when you read one of his Bruno Johnson series that he’ll get the investigation details right, and the cop characters will be authentic. His latest novel, THE RUTHLESS, is no exception. Putnam gives us the early years of a believable character in Bruno, a multi-faceted, exciting plot that will keep you turning the pages trying to unravel the mysteries of the crime, and a great sense of “being there.” Complex story, yes, but everything gets explained and taken care of by the last page. Caution, the book ends with something of a cliffhanger. This is because it’s actually the fourth and final book in the prequel setting the stage for the main sequence of Bruno’s adventures that starts with THE DISPOSABLES. There are eight novels in all, and the ones that follow this one deliver more than you might expect from a detective novel. You can read the series in chronological order starting with THE INNOCENTS, but it doesn’t matter where you start. Putnam is careful to fill you in on any back-story you might need to know. Good reading!

I received the ARC of this book from a Goodreads Giveaway. It is the first time I have read a book by this author, but I will definitely check out others. This is the last of 4 prequels in the Bruno Johnson series, but it is not necessary to have read the others to become involved with the characters. This book is very hard to put down.
The story seems to be very authentic, given the author's prior career experience. Sad to say, life can be very rough when dealing with career criminals. Detective Bruno Johnson has learned to be tough, especially with his life at stake undercover. Fortunately, the emotional family moments in the story as well as the high moral codes of father, son, and other characters make this book an inspiring read.
There are many unexpected twists, turns, and even coincidences written in to move the plot along and bring us to the finale of murder mysteries solved. Cases solved do not necessarily mean a happy ending, and the conclusion serves to make the reader want to know what will happen to Bruno in the future (especially if you haven't read the other books in the series yet!)
I enjoyed The Ruthless and hope to read more of David Putnam's books soon.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of “The Heartless” and wow am I so glad I did! This is the second Bruno Johnson book I’ve read and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know not only Bruno but the rest of his family, his coworkers, and even his nemeses. Each character is flawed enough to make them realistic and understandable but not enough to make them unlikable. Especially now when I spend most of my time sitting in my own house, it’s fun to read such an engaging and action packed book, it really took me out of my living room and placed me in TRW with Bruno and Junior. While it helps to have read some of the other Bruno Johnson novels to have more depth and background on the characters and storylines, it’s definitely not a necessity to enjoy “The Ruthless”! Plus, I loved getting to end the book by reading about author David Putnam’s own experiences that inspired some of the novel’s plot lines. I’m excited to catch up with Bruno again in “The Sinister”!

This is my first Bruno Johnson read as well as my first David Putnam work. While I have read plenty of detective/cop stories, this was on a whole new level. That might be due to Mr Putnam's background in law enforcement.
The Ruthless is a well written, action packed story that had me rethinking "can the end justify the means". While it took me about 5 days to read (due to life getting in the way), I had a hard time putting it down and very easily picking it back up to see what was next. I also found it very hard to believe that I was reading the 8th novel in a series. It never felt like I was missing out on anything about Bruno Johnson.
David did an excellent job of grabbing hold of me from the very start and at a well set pace raced me to the end, never losing or confusing me.
It was very obvious to me how much work must have gone into creating and maintaining the main character. Making him not only feel real,but embedding him with real feelings for his family and his perceptions of duty and responsibility. The scene with Bruno and his father was so emotional and so real (no I am not crying,I have something in my eye) it had quite an impact on me.
Despite the action, violence, despair and general chaos in The Ruthless I found an underlying theme of love that carries throughout the book. Bruno manages to rise above the hurt and the pain to get it done.
My goal for 2021 will be to get as many of the Bruno books as possible and gladly wait for the next book.
This is an absolute recommend for fans of just about any genre, who are interested in a good read

However after reading each one I like it more and more! This third one did not disappoint - it kept me entertained from page 1 till the end. Very hard to put down, you’re wondering what will happen next. Lots of action, details and deepening of the characters. Love the main character Bruno Johnson, and I especially like his relationship with his dad, and the Way he loves his dog. You can tell the story is written by someone who has experience with the subject, it is pretty realistic. I will be watching for David Putnam’s next Book, because now this is EXACTLY the type of book I want to read!

For someone that has worked years in the criminal justice field, David Putnam writes true modern crime stories. His characters are complex and his latest book is a definite page turner. Buy the book, you will not be sorry!

Thanks for the cool gifts you send David Putman for the The Ruthless and other books. Bruno is such an adventurous guy. You never know what spot he is going to get himself into and how he is going to get out of it. He always manages to survive. There are times he has me in tears and many times I catch myself laughing out loud. There is never a dull moment when reading David Putnam's books and you can pick up any book and get started, doesn't matter which book. There just is never a dull moment when reading his many misadventures and adventures. I anxiously turn the pages as I go. I can't get anything done as this book was so intriguing. Gets better as it goes along and then you are want to read Number 9 after you finish number 8. Please come with number 9 soon because I can't wait to read the follow up and get closure yet to another great story. I am spoiled because then I will want number 10 on and on. Lol Thanks so much for the great stories and great keepsakes.

Bruno Johnson is a tough guy with a heart.

In this installment Bruno gets his dad to tell him about the mother he never knew. The revelation is a hundred pounds of heavy!
Bruno is one very cool guy, who gets on with the job no matter what, and between his dad and his dog, Junior Mint, this was a pretty good read.
Since this is #8 in a series I think I was at a disadvantage. I would have had more of a connection with the characters had I read the previous books.
Cop story lovers, especially if you have read the series before, will find this one top notch!

This excellent series gets better which each book. It helps that the main protagonist, Bruno Johnson, is such a relatable, engaging character.
In this latest book, The Ruthless, the story action-packed and Bruno shines. I look forward to many more books in this series. Highly recommended.

I received this book through "NetGalley ReadNow" program. This story is a definite winner, Since I never read anything by this author previously I didn't know what to expect. I definitely made a good choice.
The story begins with Karl (Bruno Johnson's alias), working a sting with LAPD. He has been loaned by the sheriff's department. All of his former partner's at the sheriff's office believe that he has left. He is also trying to recover from a major incident which happened with his family.
Karl has been working with Nigel, an informant, for bringing in people who want to sell guns to the location that has been set up by the LAPD for the sting. While this was going on, he is pulled back by his former partner, Wicks, to help find the killer of a judge and his wife. While acting in this capacity he is also working his undercover assignment. When Karl is presented with a major opportunity of a gun buy, all efforts are made to complete.
Bruno, also was following a court case of an individual who was released because he became a CI for Wicks. There was bad blood between Bruno and this individual.
Eventually a time was set up to make this major gun deal and did not go off as planned. In the end they discovered something unexpected with regards to the deal.
To find out why Bruno had an interest in the CI, who Bad Bart, RD and Junior Mint were that paly a part, then you must read this story, you won't be disappointed.
