This & That is a continuation of Pam Allen's exploration in designing with alpaca fibers. Her ten new designs include shapes that go beyond the basic a cardigan with an understated peplum, a dress with a gathered waistline, a Bohus-inspired round-yoke pullover, a classic peasant top—all these and more come alive in Quince & Co's alpaca and wool blend yarns. Pam's long career in knitwear design has yielded hundreds and hundreds of satisfying and easily wearable projects.
A wonderful collection of knitting patterns but more than just that. This book is filled with side notes that give you insight into how Pam Allen designs her projects. Tips like how to vary the thickness of an aran style sweater, the reasoning behind why you might want to skip the ribbing on the bottom of a sweater, snippets about which designs work better with yarns, etc., all make this a very versatile collection.
I'm quite taken with the Sweetfern dress pattern - it has a mori girl feel to it - but I think my sweater needs are more along the lines of the Bayberry swancho or the Elderberry cable sweater. All really lovely and the kind of work that makes me consider knitting them all even if I don't have anyone to give them to right now!
The patterns are beautiful, simple but interesting and classic. The yarn really looks lovely. That said it all seems designed for a very slim figure. The model is very spare and it’s hard to imagine these on a fuller/older figure. I also was disappointed in the cardigans, one is more of a shrug and the other has an odd partial peplum. I enjoyed the book but I am unlikely to knit any of the patterns.
