Set in a turbulent British empire, these historical stories brim with energy and emotion, taking readers to the remote reaches of early twentieth century Burma to an Ireland in flux. These interconnected stories are filled with humor, insight, and unexpected moments of revelation.
a wonderful collection of intertwined short stories. I cam to this book as I was trying to better understand Britain's colonial history and I'm ashamed to say I had thought about the 'empire' as far flung countries in Asia and Africa and had neglected to think a great deal about the empire's impact on Ireland (shameful, I know, sorry). This book brought it very much to life with compelling characters playing their roles in history. I didnt realise at the outset that their interwoven histories would connect through the book but they did and I loved the way I made those discoveries as I read on. Loved it.
Well, here he was now with the evidence of cosmic creation all around him, burning brightly in the night, he bewitching uneasy hiss and shift of earth and foliage, as this and that creature slithered and prowled, hunted and preyed all the long night on the mysterious lonely planet on which he found himself in his life.
I recommend this book everyone who loves shortstories up to 50 pages about social circumstanced from different perspectives in Ireland around 1918.
