You wake up Monday morning and everyone is crazy. Everyone was already crazy, though, right? But somehow things are worse today. People are angry, throwing chairs out of office windows, eating rocks, violently scratching their necks, and running naked through the streets. They’re killing each other for no reason and laughing through the carnage. The whole city is like this. And meteors are falling from the hazy skies above. How are you going to survive? Do you even want to? This isn’t just another manic Monday. This is Crazytimes.
Scott Cole is the author of Crazytimes, Triple Axe, and SuperGhost, as well as two collections of short fiction, Departures and Slices. He is also an artist and graphic designer. He lives in Philadelphia. Find him on social media, behind you in the mirror, or at 13visions.com.
“The alarm goes off and I want to kill someone.” What a great opening line. I believe we’ve all felt that way at some time in our lives. You knew when I think that? Tuesday, usually. Mondays suck ass because you get all the shit you have to sort out from last week, and Tuesday you are already on a backlog for the things you couldn’t get to yesterday because you were sorting out other shit. It’s a vicious cycle.
So, yes, CRAZYTIMES is somewhat of an apocalyptic story about people losing their minds and killing everybody while laughing their asses off. You know, like somebody going postal or something. And you just know there’s going to be that one doomsday-prepper who will scream: “Neh, nehneh, neh, neeeehhhhhhhh! Told you so!” And for the sake of irony, may a meteor strike him at that exact moment! Nobody likes people who brag.
Anyway, people get this rash thing on their necks and they scratch, next thing you know they go nuts. Nobody knows where it comes from or how it spreads, but those infected get this swollen, purple goiter like thing – it looks horrible – and, as a man, I can only imagine it must feel like someone literally kicked your testicle into your throat.
Of course, thanks to widespread media, Derek Zoolander’s final selfie on his phone sounded like this: “This is HELL! Everybody is turning ugly. Even the ugly ones are more ugly! It’s happening to good looking people too! Call 900 and eleven – it’s happening so fast, there will be no more ridiculously good looking people to give me a eugoogooly!! Not the face…no…NO…NOOOOOOOOOOOO!”
This story was good and I loved the dark humor. The ending didn’t blow me away, but I can’t really think of a better one, so I will have to go with four stars for this one.
Like SuperGhost and Triple Axe before it, Crazytimes amused me from beginning to end. I highly recommend it if you’re a horror comedy fan and like a messy, disgustingly murdery tale of mayhem!
Trey is a normal guy going through a rough patch. His lady love has left him and he’s still in the licking his wounds stage of grief and awakens one morning wanting to kill someone but there’s no one around but himself so he heads to work instead. This sounds like a good idea in theory but what Trey doesn’t realize is that the world has been infected by something that makes most everyone start behaving very strangely. And everything begins to quickly unravel from there.
The fun of this book is in discovering each little weird interaction Trey spies with his shocked eyes as he attempts to maneuver his day and stumbles across people doing strange and terrible things. I am nosy by nature and his description of these events fascinated me. I couldn’t get enough of them, to be honest. It is such a gross, weird and amusing type of apocalypse to behold! Be warned though because nothing is sacred here. Kids, babies, animals? It’s all fair game but the gaze doesn’t linger on it for long and it’s written in a lightish hearted tone so your soul probably won’t be scarred forever if you read it. If it is, don't come back here and blame me. I used up all of my f*cks to give a couple months ago. But seriously if it were too much I’d definitely let you know!
Once things get going, the action does not stop and it gets wilder and wilder as it goes along. That’s what I love most about this writer. His books take turns no one could ever predict and this one is no exception. I love being surprised like this. You won’t find any deep emotion here and you know what? That’s just fine by me when a book is this fun. There’s room for all kinds of books and sometimes your brain is screaming for something delightfully wicked and this one fits in that category just fine.
4.0 Stars How else do I describe this one except absolutely… CRAZY! This novella started out deceptively normal. The main character was just such a likeable and relatable guy. He began noticing people around acting out, but it still seemed within the realm of normal craziness. Well... then things got genuinely crazy.
I have read this author's work before and, once again, I was impressed by his strong writing and engaging narrative style. This story is not exactly scary, but it certainly became gory and gruesome as the plot escalated. By the end, this book was over-the-top crazy in the most bizarre and unexpected ways. It's very important to go into this book with the right expectations so that readers are prepared for the story that they get. The title of this novella really says it all... expect crazy times.
Needless to say, this story was a lot of fun to read. I would recommend this novella to anyone looking for an entertaining, crazy ride.
Scott Cole's Crazytimes, the latest release from Grindhouse Press, more than gleefully lives up to its publisher's aesthetic of gory B-movies in print, and it's a freaking trip, y'all. The plot, such as it is, is celluloid thin and serves a chance for Cole to engage in a lot of fun, wall-to-wall violent shenanigans for damn near the entire page count, giving this read the feel of a brisk, low-budget, 89-minute summertime horror flick.
It's also an unintentionally well-timed Stay At Home pandemic read that feels very much of its time, particularly when Trey masks up to engage with some violent crazies at the local home improvement store. But I'm getting ahead of myself here, so let's rewind a bit.
Trey wakes up late for work, just barely misses the bus, spills his coffee, and notices a strange haze in the sky that seems to be linked to the odd behavior of his fellow city-dwellers. Before you can say "Somebody's having a case of the Mondays!" things go from bad to homicidally insane worse. People are going absolutely bonkers, attacking and killing one another and exhibiting all kinds of crazy behavior, as well as physical deformities (as evidenced by the spot-on cover art, which does a fabulous job of preparing you for what to expect).
Crazytimes follows Trey's first-person account of this wild contagion that is spreading like maniacal wildfire through the city, turning friends and neighbors into savage, bloodthirsty horrors. You can tell Cole had a lot of fun writing his way through one whacked out scenario to the next, and his enthusiasm makes its way onto each page here. There's plenty of blood, grossness, bizarre behaviors, and machete-wielding violence to satisfy, and that is, in fact, the book's entire reason for being.
Crazytimes is an exercise in unbridled insanity and depravity as entertainment, and it's a freaking blast. It's the kind of book that knows exactly what it wants and needs to be, and Cole doesn't miss a step in its execution. It's of a piece with CV Hunt's 2018 Grindhouse release Cockblock in terms of apocalyptic horrors, but pared down even closer to the bone and stripped of the social commentary that gave that book its central narrative thrust. Crazytimes is just all about fun, wild, extremely out-there fun. It is, in fact, a crazy time, and Cole delivers exactly what's promised.

4.5/5
I hate doing it, but inevitably you’ll read a book and when you try to describe it to someone, you’ll suggest a movie that it most closely resembles.
‘Crazytimes‘ immediately reminded me of a movie and a comic series. I don’t read a lot of comics, not sure why, I always love them, but one series I read frequently was Garth Ennis’ ‘Crossed.’ Mix ‘Crossed’ with ‘Shaun of the Dead‘ and that’s the type of book you’re getting into.
Cole has created a rampaging rhino of a fun time, a book that is an easy one-sitting read and a really great ‘end of times’ take.
What I liked: Normal day, yeah? You wake up, struggling with bills and the uncertainty of your significant other having left you randomly. You go to work and then BOOM, stuff starts flying down from the sky, weird gas starts filling the air and everyone around you turns into mindless, mutating killing machines. That’s both a brief synopsis as well as really, why I liked this book. It’s great fun. People get killed – brutally, for the most part, and we get to see someone work hard to survive.
What I didn’t like: Two little bits. I liked what the people became and how they burst and transformed, that was awesome. I didn’t really enjoy the events at the graveyard. It was a left turn that I personally, could have done without. And I’m not totally sold on the ending. I have a theory, but I’m not sure!
Why you should buy it: ‘Crazytimes‘ is exactly as the title suggests. If you want a roaring read that you’ll finish in an evening and smile the entire time, this one’s for you. Cole crafted some fantastic kill scenes, which fans of splatterpunk will definitely enjoy!
Well, if I ever feel like I'm having a bad day, I'll just think about Trey and the crazy Monday he had and realize it could be a LOT worse! What would be my first clue my day was going to go from worse to flat out insane? The crazy woman on the bus? Perhaps my boss staying underneath my desk to make sure I was doing work all day? Most definitely would be the spring rolls and .. um, tea..... 😉 Cole takes us on quite the Monday.
If you're like me and love those scenes in Bird Box and The Happening where people just start going nuts, then this is going to be a fun ride for you. Just when you didn't think it could get any crazier..... and I think what's great is that while we get a lot of gross horror (YAY), we also get some comedic moments that lighten the mood a bit. Being in Trey's head while he goes about this day is actually quite fun. I don't think I would've handled it as well as he did. Maybe. Yeah, nope.
Completely crazy!!! Graphic scenes & full of carnage!
“Another cook runs out from the kitchen with a large metal bowl and screams “Tofuuuuu tiiiime!” at the top of his lungs, then tries stuffing handfuls of bean curd cubes into the mouths of other people.”
Meteors are falling from the sky and people are going loco, some even turning into mutant monsters!!
I had a blast reading it and had to force myself to stop and actually get some chores done. Then I zoomed through it till the end.
There were a few questions I had whilst reading, but they weren’t answered in the end; if only the book had been a bit longer!! Speaking of “The End”, I was a bit puzzled about the church scene, & not understanding did leave me feeling a bit disappointed.
Crazytimes is my third Scott Cole novella, and I love that he always has fun with his stories. This one is entertaining and gory. At times it feels repetitive, but it works well enough as a quick novella. Most of the action was kind of crammed in to the end, and this one went in a very different direction from what I was expecting.
This book is awesomely paced and a thrilling adventure during the apocalypse. Laugh out loud funny here, then mouth puckering gore there, I had a great time reading Scott’s wicked tale. 4/5 Skulls ☠️☠️☠️☠️
Hold on to your horses! This story is wilder than any manic Monday you have ever encountered! Author Scott Cole has given us a way to fear Mondays even more, as Crazytimes gives us a glance in a Monday in the life of a man where the world is flipped upside down and all bets are off. This book starts off with a man who has the same moans and groans of any 9-to-5er. He does not want to go to work, his bills are on his mind, he's thinking about his ex, his commute is full of annoyances from his stop for morning coffee and the traffic, and his boss is a micromanaging pain in the butt. But is that even the worst thing? NOPE! Because all of a sudden everyone around him is going to turn bloodthirsty and crazed with no explanation to him. There is a an unknown contagion spreading rapidly and whenever it's noticed then it's already too late to stop it from taking over. The rest of his day is going to be full of blood, gore, dismemberment, bodies seemingly exploding, meteors, and more! This book fits perfectly in the Grindhouse Press catalog as it delivers non-stop action and gross horror. I had so much fun with this novella! Each scene just got crazier and crazier and I was totally into it all!
Highly recommended! 4.5 stars and rounded up for Goodreads
I was just coming off of a big, heavy book and I was looking for a light, mindless (in a good way) palate cleanser. Needless to say Crazytimes fit the bill perfectly!
Basically it’s just one dude trying to survive while the world goes violently insane around him. The book is gruesome. All manner of limbs are dismembered, bodies split open, and gory flung about with reckless abandon. Lots of creative kill scenes. The book is fast-paced. The story rips right along, all taking place in a single day. We’re given few lulls to catch our breath, and even those end in disaster. The book is gross (whatever virus is infecting people has some real nasty side effects). And ultimately the book plays out like a trashy, fun grindhouse B-movie (think Planet Terror meets The Crazies).
My only complaint is that I was left wanting more in terms of character development and plot events. There’s hints at possible reasons for the world ending, but then the story ends without ever really exploring/explaining them.
Sometimes you just need a little craziness to temper what’s going on in the real world. Scott Cole’s Crazytimes fits that bill. What’s causing everyone in the world to be driven to acts of extreme violence? This book was nuts from start to finish, and the ending was nothing I would have expected. This is a quick read that I would recommend highly.
When I started this book I kept thinking this is the most Monday of all Mondays kinda book. Most mornings you wake and check you calendar with it’s inspirational quotes to help get you inspired to start your day. That quote to give you that boost you need and add that pep in your step. This Monday when you check your quote of the day it says, “what the fuck”! This was the main feeling I had for this book. I don’t mean in a bad way but in a way that made me think “could this get any crazier?”.
This book had great pacing which is something you expect with a title like this. If this book was about some joe blow going on about his boring life and nothing happened to warrant this title, I would be blazing mad and infuriated! This book wasted no time in bringing you the crazy of people throwing chairs out of office building windows, eating rocks, and laughing hysterically while killing each other. I loved the slow build on the crazy acts though. The author kinda eases you into the worst possible situation. I’m leaving all things cryptic because it’s something you have to experience yourself.
I had several books and movies go through my mind that I could reference this book to as far as the crazy situations go but nothing compared to the book as a whole. I thought this book had a very unique take on the begins of an apocalypse. The only downfall I had was that I didn’t personally connect with any of the characters. There were parts where the author brought up brief backstories but they were always cut short. It was like the beginnings of an emotional part that were quickly interrupted. So I gave this book 4/5 ⭐️
There are probably weirder reasons to look into an author than for the fact his name is yours and your youngest son's, but I can't think of them right now. Probably apt that I found a crazy reason to come upon this one as the whole world begins to go crazy around Trey leading to pulpy, gory action scenes with doses of black humour mingled throughout. It all begins in relatable craziness as Trey bustles to get to work late-ish, but minor chaos prevents this and the true craziness soon kicks in.
Cole manages to make the why of it all unimportant as he careens you through the story with easy prose and quick, unpredictable twists when you start to think the story might be headed in a particular direction. It's a fine one sit read that I struggled to put down stopping for a quick toilet break only.
There's satire, violence, conspiracy, sci-fi and a whole host of things bundled into this short read that is well worth checking out. There might not be many stranger reasons for checking out a book, but I am glad I did and will easily read more of this well named author in the future.
Crazytimes, well that sure was something. How could I not pick up Crazytimes amid all these crazy times happening?! That was one wild ride, but I've come to expect that from Scott Cole and frankly, I would have been disappointed with anything more subtle. Cole is an in your face writer who doesn't hold back!
Crazytimes is a crazy train ride from the first page to the last; I finished it during my children's nap time! It was fun, it was gory, gross, and entertaining. I'd definitely recommend picking it up, devouring it in one sitting, and hanging on tight!
It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It was Crazytimes. Involving murder, mayhem, relationships, both family and romantic, zombies, and if I got it right, something extraterrestrial. There was also an unplanned birth I really dug, even if the little bastard was dispatched sooner than I wanted. Anyway, a quick read by Scott Cole, and I liked it. You may too.
Trey wakes up, gets ready and heads to work like usual.
Yeah there's some unusual bangs off in the distance, the bus drivers aren't making their usual traffic stops and Trey finds his boss hiding under his desk when he gets to work. But as his ex used to say, these are crazy times.
As the craziness of the people around him progresses rather quickly, Trey can't help but wonder what the hell is going on.
I had a crazy time reading this novella. It was gory, twisted and had a weird but very good ending.
I'm not sure what exactly went down or why but it was a fun ride and I was rooting for the MC on his journey through the craziness.
Would definitely recommend for a very entertaining quick read.
I am not sure Scott Cole could have chosen a more perfect title for this book, as it is insanely bat shit crazy! And who decided that bat shit was the craziest? But, I suppose that is beside the point. This book is nuts, guys.
I kept going back and forth between being horrified and giggling throughout the majority of the wildly quick read. (Is that weird?) The story starts off as a relatable tale of a man who just isn't feeling the waking up on a Monday and going back to the grind thing, then the story heads off into bizarro-land. Trey's day goes from a very predictable, albeit annoying and unwanted, Monday to all out mayhem, gore, and unbelievable insanity. Just when you think it cannot get any more insane, it does just that (and then some).
I cannot rave enough about the incredibly accessible and conversational style of Cole's writing. It was almost as if you were sitting with the main character, Trey, as he was telling you about the weirdest day that he just had. I think that is part of the appeal of this story; the narrator is so "approachable."
Please do not go into this book thinking, "Ehhh...it's called Crazytimes. I guess it may be a little silly with some gore." Ummm...this novella lives up to its title in every sense. I went in to this book relatively blind, and I was blown away. This is the kind of story I love...something that is off the wall but still has all the gore and shock that I live for. Scott Cole is certainly going to be an author that I seek out more from in the future.
A crazy clusterfuck of chaos. A menagerie of madness. A veritable vat of violence.
I could go on but its best to leave some things to the imagination....
“𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘺𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴. 𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘺 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴”
I don’t know If a quote could be more accurate than this one for the year 2020. As I read this novella, I kept thinking how less fiction and more non-fiction this book could actually be and it was a tad bit terrifying to say the least!
From start to finish, Crazytimes was a wild ride; fast paced, horrific and funny! I think all horror readers have some sort of sick sense of humor, and myself being an ER nurse in a downtown hospital I feel mines even sicker 🤣. I can’t say to much without spoiling my favorite parts but I got an extra kick out of a certain use for a mason jar, a trail of breadcrumbs reference and how a severed arm was used. I was especially grossed out with a carpet licker ( an actually carpet you sickos) and a pee drinker. “What the fuck?!” really was the phrase of the day here 🤭. I guess what I’m saying is, you need to read this to get the full experience. So In the words of Jennifer Love Hewitt- What are you Waiting For?!
This one was pretty funny in its own horrible way. A guy gets up, is late for work and as soon as he is waiting for the bus everything starts to go completely crazy. It starts quite restrained, like a woman trying to smash her fist into a bus door, but when he gets to work finds his boss hiding under his desk. Before long things get violent, VERY violent!
A couple of scenes made me laugh out loud - in one he is hiding in a Chinese food joint and he realises he is drinking the waitresses warm piss (he thought it was tea) and in another he sees a group of men shit into bottles and then throw the bottles at passers by.
It is written almost as a continuous train of thought with nutty and violent stuff happening everywhere. It's novella length, so doesn't overstay its welcome. Fun, but very black humoured stuff.
Crazytimes is action packed vision of the apocalypse through the twisted vision of Scott Cole. This story flies by with a breakneck pace that can literally endanger your neck. There is action and gore aplenty in this short tale of the world coming apart at the seams. Just when you think you know where this tale is going, the author throws some bizarro curveballs at you and the ending was not what I expected but I found it thoroughly satisfying. This is a fun tale that I read in a couple sittings. I highly recommend this crazy story that fits in perfectly with the publisher.
Gruesome, fun, disturbing little end-of-the-world chiller. One minute you're laughin', the next minute you're pukin'. Enjoyed every word and can't wait to read more from this author!
What a great read. After starting out fairly normally this ride just got weirder and weirder at every turn. Entertaining to the very last page. Highl recommended.
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘇𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀?… Looking to take a wild bat-shit crazy ride into a world of violence and gore? Then hop-on! Buckle those seat-belts, sit back and enjoy the madness up ahead!
Trey thinks he’s stuck in some bizarre dream that he can’t wake up from. People have grown blisters on their necks and are acting violently and killing one another. Trey seems to have a natural genetic defense against whatever is causing people to go crazy. Could it be because of the alien meteorites that have fallen from the sky? Or is it because it’s Monday again?
This was enjoyable! short and with many action sequences of blood and gore galore. If you check this one out, try not to take it too seriously, it reads like a b-horror/dark comedy borderline comic-book style (think “Crossed” comics). It’s over-the-top ridiculous that features zombies, crazed kids and monster babies amongst other things. Trey was a good protagonist to follow as he navigated this infected world and noticed all the chaos unfolding around him. But what I loved about him was the fact that he carried a small action figure of Henry Bemis around as his good luck charm - I’m such a sucker for any Twilight Zone reference though. The only reason why I’m not rating this any higher is because I wasn’t really feeling the ending. I loved the idea of it but It felt a little too out of place for my liking.
I’ll recommend this novella to readers who are in the proper mindset of looking to read a crazy, bizarre and wildly entertaining apocalyptic story. With the title, what you see is what you get, Crazytimes indeed.
A crazy (yeah) fast paced and weird story that I wish was maybe a little longer. Some of the scenes and characters could have been fleshed out a little more. Especially the surprise meeting with the ex which was shown and over with fairly quickly. The ending too was completely unexpected and bizarre which I thought was interesting. It’s definitely worth reading though if you’re a fan of weird horror and Grindhouse Press in general.
Cole has quite the imagination. Funny and shocking from start to finish, and just when I started to think I knew where it was going…I very much did not. A truly wild finish. Read it in a single sitting because I couldn’t put it down.
