"All human things of dearest value hang on slender strings." ~E. Waller, 17thC. Poet
Strings – Common Ground is the third in the series that follows a Swiss family, now in Texas, coping with a difficult legacy handed down from World War 2. Rolf and his family must face the past as it takes on human form threatening both lives and property.
It is 1992 and Rolf’s friend and partner, Wilhelm must confront the beating of his granddaughter while her father is attacked and left for dead on a New York City side street. No one can understand why anyone would commit such savagery until his identity becomes known, and both Rolf’s and Wilhelm’s families are pitted against an old adversary.
While the family, having branched out into Texas is struggling through a drought, they try to adjust to the death of a beloved mother. Travis battles to honor his promise to Chloe, recover and rediscover his love for music as the ranch is repeatedly torched by an arsonist. Their long-estranged grandchildren, Connor and Erin, are thrown together in order to survive as Rolf and Wilhelm, attempt to uncover who is behind the attacks and death threats and discover what they really want.
The slender strings of life and promises made are tested to the breaking point as the two families band together to defeat a common enemy determined to destroy them.
Now a slim chance presents itself to Rolf and Wilhelm to end the terror for good and find the peace they have sought for a lifetime. Wildfires threaten to take everything of value from the families. Lives are lost or changed forever, yet one unwavering truth, amidst the deceptions and brutality, is the enduring slender string of love that binds them together. They are locked in the fight of their lives and only their love for one another will save them.
Told against the beautiful backdrop of the Texas Hill Country and the dangers of wildland firefighting, Common Ground is a story of family, abiding friendship, faith, and devotion to honoring a promise made to a young prodigy that symbolizes the multitudes that died during a brutal war across the sea.
I am a Texas author and attended Texas Wesleyan University with degrees in Psychology and Art.
In the early 1980's I co-founded a chemical recycling fuel blending plant. Upon retiring I pursued my real love...books...reading and writing them.
I traveled and incorporates what I saw and experienced into my work. I traveled a great deal in Europe, UK, Australia and New Zealand and returned to Texas to begin writing full time. I spent time in areas where my family had fought in WW2 and has several family members serving now.
The series is a labor of love for Me, and is peopled with complex characters that must confront the challenges, successes, failures and repercussions resulting from decisions and the effects of war. They build their lives and families while facing their personal challenges and obligations.
Strings Garden of the Gods is the first publication in a four part family saga set between 1938 and 2018. Strings Atonement was released in 2017. Book three, Common Ground, is scheduled to be out early 2018.
This has been an exciting experience creating a world populated with interesting people and challenging antagonists. Strings is set in both Switzerland and Texas making for interesting contrasts.
My family hails from Kyburg, Switzerland, east of Zurich not far from the beautiful city of St. Gallen where much of this series is set. Eastern Switzerland is filled with extraordinary scenery, not the least of these are the Alps near Austria which creates a dramatic backdrop for the story to unfold.
