Wrapped in Leather

Rate this book
To celebrate his decision to take the next step with his boyfriend Ian, Toshi Baylor plans a romantic evening at their favorite steak house. Toshi starts the special weekend with a bang by surprising Ian at home with lunch. There’s a bang all right, but it’s between Ian and another guy.

Jase Taylor’s auto repair shop and the BDSM club, Wrapped Up, keep him busy while he waits for Mr. Right, instead of Mr. Right Now. He’s a Dom, but playing with the club’s submissives isn’t providing the usual stress release. After a day from hell, he deserves a good meal at his favorite steak house.

Toshi and Jase find a mix-up with their reservations: a table for Baylor, not Taylor. When Toshi invites Jase to dine with him, they discover a mutual affection for leather and a shared belief that trust must be earned.

Before they can explore their common interests, Toshi suffers a series of attacks by vandals. Jase’s protective instincts kick in, but both wonder if it can lead to anything permanent.

M.A. Church is a true Southern belle who spent many years in the elementary education sector. Now she spends her days lost in fantasy worlds, arguing with hardheaded aliens on far-off planets, herding her numerous shifters, or trying to tempt her country boys away from their fishing poles. It’s a full time job, but hey, someone’s gotta do it!

When not writing, she’s on the back porch tending to the demanding wildlife around the pond in the backyard. The ducks are very outspoken. She’s married to her high school sweetheart, and they have two grown children.

Walking into his boyfriend’s house and finding said boyfriend ass deep in someone else’s…well, ass, was not how he wanted to go about popping the ‘moving in’ question. But with a little revenge à la shrimp and determination to bury everything under a pile of high-grade steak, Toshi sets out to forget the horrible, no good, downright boring relationship with Ian.

When he has to fire a longtime employee for being drunk, belligerent, and having an alarming tendency to throw heavy objects around Jase’s car repair shop, Jase figures he deserves a good meal and some alone time. Granted he has had far more ‘alone time’ than he has really wanted since his sub and boyfriend took himself off to greener pastures, but he can’t expect the Steak House to furnish him with a hot, kinky man as well as a hot meal.

When a mix-up lands them a table short, and a moment of daring lands them sharing a meal, Jase and Toshi find themselves caught up in something that might just feel like attraction. But lust can only take them so far, and while Jase’s commands are all that Toshi has dreamed about, life is never more complicated than when he tries to live it at another man’s feet.

I always enjoy a good ol’ welcome-to-the-kink type story. It is interesting to see how characters react to the wide range of BDSM lifestyles. Be it hard-core or light play, there is something so very entrancing about the ideas of dominance and submission. And I do enjoy being able to see both sides–-though if I had to pick one, I’m a bit of a sucker for the subs. Watching Toshi feel his way into Jase’s lifestyle was fun. He doesn’t know a lot about what exactly he wants from Jase, but he has known for quite some time that he might just need it. And he trust Jase to give it to him. Even when ‘it’ is equal parts exciting, terrifying, and embarrassing. This had to be my favorite part of the story (though hide-the-shrimp comes in a close second–-and no, that is not a euphemism. Get your mind out of the gutter, people!). While it is not very hard-core, it was hot, and felt perfect for where Jase and Toshi were in their relationship.

While not exactly my cup of tea, I did enjoy the whole mystery of who was targeting Toshi. I probably solved it a little too fast for it to be completely enjoyable, but for a while it did keep me guessing. Thankfully it wasn’t the most obvious, but I do have some issues with how it kind of just floundered at the end. The whole book is wrapped up in this idea that someone wants to hurt Toshi, but when it comes down to it, the bad guy just kind of…disappears. It was rather anticlimactic. I get that avoiding the whole confront-the-villain cliché was a nice twist, but without replacing it with some other type of crises, or breaking point, the tension in the book sort of just unravels unfulfillingly.

There also was the fact that this book uses (a lot) one of my big pet-peeves in stories: character talking out loud to themselves. I get that it helps break up the constant flow of thoughts…but it has a tendency to read very fake. Maybe it is just me, but when I talk to myself I don’t do it in full structured sentences. The dialogue in this story was a little off to begin with-–though I can’t pinpoint why it felt like that, much to my annoyance–-but when you add in the stilted conversations that the characters have with themselves it just messed up the flow of the story. I don’t know, maybe there are people who talk like that, but for me it just didn’t work.

This was a decent story, but overall it lacked a certain punch that would have kicked up the rating. I liked the BDSM, but there was a bit of a difference between Dom/sub and Jase/Toshi. With the way their relationship works, the two are quite varied, but the heat I felt with the Dom/sub didn’t really transfer over to Jase/Toshi. And while the villain was a nice twist, it also felt like the author didn’t know what to do with him so just kicked him out the story, leaving us hanging. Plus…the leather fetish felt odd. Which is doubly odd because I love leather. Maybe they just spent too much time telling us how much they loved it, and not enough time showing it. Either way, this story was interesting, but didn’t exactly hold my full attention.

The storyline was good and the characters interesting, but the narrative style just uninspiring. There were too many instances of minutae delineated that dragged it down and the ending was a quick boxing up with an obvious lead-in for a follow up book with two secondary characters. It was a nice story, just not engaging.

Nicely done romance with some drama sprinkled in

I enjoyed reading this, the plot moved at a good pace and Toshi and Jace fit well together. It was refreshing seeing the Dom/sub relationship build up instead of jumping into it immediately. It felt more realistic and made the romance better. I also liked the drama of someone harassing Toshi and the little bit of fear it added, although the ending for that plotline was anticlimactic.
I would definitely read a sequel that delves more into the bdsm and club as Toshi becomes more comfortable.

Not a fan of the writing. It reads like it was written by or for someone quite young. I don’t really want a BDSM a book to read like a YA book.

And for a second edition, I would think the editing would be a little tighter. There’s a line in 1st person POV in the first few pages, even though everything else is 3rd person.

It also mentions Toshi’s ex, Ian called “numerous times over the next several weeks” before it “trickled down to once a week”. Then Ian stops call altogether and it had “taken Ian only a month to get the message that Toshi was done”. And not even a few pages later, it says the one month anniversary of Toshi dumping Ian was coming up. So, several weeks + plus a week = a month. But not even a month.

This was an enjoyable read with characters and a relationship that felt real. Toshi and Jace meet by chance due to a reservation mix-up at a restaurant. Toshi invites Jace to dine with him and the two men hit it off quite well. Both men have been hurt, most recently Toshi who just caught his boyfriend cheating on him. Toshi soon realizes that Jace can offer him the dominance in the bedroom that was missing from his past relationship.

The two men are nurturing both their friendship and their D/s relationship when Toshi is soon receiving threats at his home and Jace steps in to help out. I enjoyed both characters, especially Toshi. While submissive in the bedroom, Toshi is strong and smart and even a bit bratty at times. I enjoyed watching Toshi's submissive side come out with the more experienced Jace guiding him.

The outside drama added just enough tension to the book without taking over the story and although it is resolved, it is left open just enough that it can be revisited in future books in the series. The writing flowed nicely and the D/s relationship worked well. This was my first M.A. Church book and I will look forward to more.

Wrapped in Leather by M.A. Church began with an interesting story arc and a tense build up of action and continued for over three-fourths of the novel. By juxtaposing the developing D/s relationship between Jase and Toshi with the mysterious stalker side story, the author gave us an exciting story line that is both sexually charged and steeped in mystery. I felt that Church used her characters wisely, exploring both the submissive and dominant mindset and exposing how each has their own set of doubts and hesitations. These were two wounded men who had trusted in another person to keep their hearts safe and both were burned. The idea that theirs was a tentative relationship was well done, very realistic, and I never felt that the emotional attachment that these two developed for each other was rushed.

The story was interesting enough to get me to finish it. The writing was a bit off for me, I got especially aggravated about the use of the word 'gods' - according to my kindle it was used 127 times! The stalker storyline was build up nicely, only to fizzle out in the end.

Worth your time

This is a really good story about people who are involved in the BDSM lifestyle. I hope the author does more in this world. The spicy scenes are well written, the surrounding story is engaging. Well worth your time to read. I recently found this author and have been enjoying going through the catalog of their work. This is the first one that moved me to review in addition to staring.

A canceled dentist appointment, a cheating boyfriend, a hard day at work, and a reservation a favorite restaurant. This is the beginning of the love story between Jase and Toshi. It ends with leather and finding the person that is just right for you.

Strong 3.5
'Wrapped in Leather' by M.A. Church is only the second book by this author that I've had the pleasure of reading. Since the first book I read was a fantasy/sci-fi, jumping into a contemporary romance was a lot of fun. Inasmuch as I'm a fan of BDSM and I enjoy reading new authors (to me) of the genre, the appeal of this book was multifaceted.

Toshi wrapped around me right from the beginning. I have a weakness for teachers as my mother was one, so Toshi being a high school world history teacher felt comfortable to me. Toshi is half Japanese and half American, being a little on the shorter side and slight. Not exactly what I would describe as a twink, but kind of close. He's twenty-seven and looking for a long-time, permanent relationship. Toshi wants a partner, but he needs one who is dominant in the bedroom as Toshi tends more toward being submissive. Toshi's most recent six month relationship ended when he found Ian having sex with someone else. On the one month anniversary of being free from Ian, Toshi heads to his favorite steak house.

Jase is a Dom whose five year relationship ended when his partner broke up with him on Valentine's Day in the middle of a restaurant. Since that time, Jase has dated once or twice but he mainly engaged in scenes with guys at his favorite club, and when that grew old he stopped altogether. Jase wants a partner, a submissive in the bedroom, but someone able to take care of themselves outside of bed, and most importantly, someone who will talk to him about their needs. Jase owns his own auto shop and the day from hell, firing one mechanic and sending another home with the flu, leads him to treat himself at his favorite steak house.

Angie at the steak house has no idea what she started by messing up Jase's reservation. *grins* Toshi and Jase hit it off, begin going to the gym, and start dating with Jace explaining about BDSM and Toshi willing to learn about a D/s relationship. They take everything fairly slowly, and it appears to be a much more relaxed D/s relationship than what I've read in other books, but it was still exciting to watch them learn together. Unfortunately, they aren't very far into their dating affair when Toshi begins to be the target of a vandal, trashing his car, spying at him through his windows, and trying to break into his house. At first Toshi thinks it's Ian but the police verify his alibi, so as the violence escalates, Toshi and Jase are both wondering who could possibly hate Toshi so much.

This was an enjoyable story of love with a little light BDSM thrown in. I thought the author did a good job in creating the characters and the added excitement of a D/s relationship. I was a little disappointed in the ending as I felt it was anti-climactic, but overall it was a good read. If you enjoy a chance meeting leading to your heart's desire then this might be the book for you.

Toshi knew his current relationship with Ian was far from perfect but little did he know how bad it was until he opted to surprise Ian with dinner one evening. When he caught Ian in bed with another man, Toshi knew that it was well and truly over for him and Ian and not a minute too soon. You see there was far more wrong with their partnership than simple cheating. Toshi had needs—a very profound need to be dominated and Ian simply could not deliver. Set adrift and wondering if his love for leather and submission is somehow wrong, Toshi decides to take himself out for a nice dinner and ends up falling right into the hands of the very dominant, leather loving Jase.

Due to a reservation mix-up the two men end up at the same table for dinner and realize that there is something more they want to share than just dessert. But lovers they trusted have burned both of these men and so letting down their guard does not come easily. On top of that, someone is threatening to harm Toshi, invading his home and leaving cryptic messages. Toshi is determined not to let the stalker intimidate him but Jase is not about to let his new found lover and submissive deal with things all on his own.

Wrapped in Leather by M.A. Church began with an interesting story arc and a tense build up of action and continued for over three fourths of the novel. By juxtaposing the developing D/s relationship between Jase and Toshi with the mysterious stalker side story, the author gave us an exciting story line that is both sexually charged and steeped in mystery. I felt that M.A. Church used her characters wisely, exploring both the submissive and dominant mindset and exposing how each has their own set of doubts and hesitations. These were two wounded men who had trusted in another person to keep their hearts safe and both were burned. The idea that theirs was a tentative relationship was well done, very realistic and I never felt that the emotional attachment that these two developed for each other was rushed.

I also felt that the “mystery stalker” was a well done added element. It created a tension in the story that pushed the overall plot along. My only real problem with this story arose at the very end. Suddenly the stalker/intruder was exposed and dealt with off page with Jase musing over the results. It was so abrupt, as if the author just ran out of steam for this particular subplot. There had been such good build up, with the violent aspect of the intrusions escalating each time something happened and then there was this less than satisfactory quick and slightly sloppy resolution. This was truly unfortunate especially since the rest of this story was so well crafted and entertaining. I think if there could have been just a bit more to the ending, a slower reveal, the overall ending would have been much more powerful.

Wrapped In Leather by M.A. Church was a good story with some hot light BDSM scenes and solid characterization but the ending left much to be desired.

I had never read any works by M. A. Church prior to reading Wrapped in Leather but it will definitely not be the last time I read this author. I thoroughly enjoyed this story along with Toshi and Jase. Both men were strong in different ways and they complemented each other wonderfully.Ms. Church gave us a well written story that felt sexy and real. I loved Toshi and totally enjoyed his offbeat method of vengeance. Even through his pain I found laughter; however that is not to say that Ms. Church did not write an emotionally charged story because it was that as well. I could understand why Jase was leery of getting involved with Toshi but loved that he decided to take that leap of faith. I loved that this strong man was emotionally vulnerable and Ms. Church showed it in such a thoughtful manner. I also enjoyed the fact that Ms. Church didn’t rush Toshi and Jase’s relationship. She gave them the time they needed to learn about each other and become comfortable together. This story was well thought out and full of emotional depth. It also had moments of fun and light-heartedness. I found myself invested and charmed by her writing and look forward to seeing more from this author and her Wrapped Up series.

MA Church offers up a tale of self-exploration and acceptance with Wrapped in Leather. I liked that the story didn't revolve around the usual type of characters you'd expect in a bdsm tale. Both men felt real, and that aspect is vital in this type of story. No one knew everything, no one was perfect... but Toshi and Jase worked together to find their happiness. I had a few quibbles as I usually do, lol, but they didn't detract much from my enjoyment of the story. I certainly enjoyed the false red herrings tossed my way so the angst driven portion of the plot wasn't completely transparent. I was surprised by the bad guy when he was finally revealed, which helped make up for the ending which could have been a little stronger in the emotion department for a climax. Still, I see more to come with this series, so I'm sure we'll get more information at a later date. If you enjoy realistic stories, especially for beginners exploring bdsm, with characters who could easily be someone you'd run into in life, then you should get this eBook!

There isn't a reall story, Just how a the two main characters met and got along plus a lot of fillers, some of them terribly lengthy and agonizingly boring. . Unnecessary scenes and meaningless fillers are covering a good portion of this book, while some significant events are covered in a few lines. The most annoying part is that the author didn't do her homework on tattoos and their meaning in Japanese culture, especially considering the emphasis which was put on Toshi's heritage and his fluency in Japanese, etc.
And the ending is just ridiculous!
Finally the editing is also not flawless but considering all other things that are wrong with this book, it seems rather ignore able .

There wasn't anything wrong with this story but at the same time there wasn't anything to eye catching either. There was one problem that was outside of the MC relationship but otherwise Toshi and Jase met and fell in love pretty easily. Despite the fact both guys had some bad break ups neither one was carrying to much baggage which left very little in the way of drama. There was some good sex scenes and I really liked Toshi's sometime bratty yet submissive character alot, I just wish there would have been a little internal conflict to spice up the book a little bit.

This was a nice enough story. There was something missing though. Lots of little detail in parts but then the ending was quickly wrapped up. The title and everything pointed to a BDSM book, and this was but it wasn't as "Dom/Sub" as I thought it would be.

I appreciate getting detail in a story but there was an awkwardness to the timing of the detail that just didn't flow well. Then when we needed more detail or more to the story, like who is causing trouble for the men, we don't get it.

All in all I did enjoy the story but it just was missing a little.

Not every book is going to appeal to every individual. The same can be said about reviewers. Just because we are given a book to review, doesn’t mean we are necessarily the right person to review said book. That is what happened with Wrapped in Leather, and how I ended up reviewing it. I am actually glad that happened, because I quite enjoyed the story and was introduced to a new to me author at the same time.

Review written for MM Good Book Reviews

This is a story that combines romance and kinks nicely. Easily to read and follow the storyline we get to meet two characters that are quite charming. I’m a fan of kinky reads and, while sometimes they are quite heavy, this one managed to keep with a light-hearted feeling throughout the plot, even as things got a bit complicated and danger lurked down the corner...

I really enjoyed this book and the story. Toshi and Jase meet at a restaurant when Jase's reservation is messed up. Toshi invites him to eat with him and they have a great time.

Toshi likes the things Jase makes him feel and they form a relationship.

When Toshi's life is disrupted Jase is there for him.

I like the story and it is written well.

It was okay but didn't impress me and I don't think it will be a re-read. The writing was adequate but I didn't feel anything for the characters. The BDSM was nicely presented but I would have preferred more in the club.

A fun but unmemorable romance.

The BDSM aspect was not really a big part of the story. I don't think the Dom/sub relationship was explored as much as it could have been.

Toshi and Jase were a cute couple though.

Great

Loved this book. Has the romance with the BDSM included. Dosen't go overboard but is not just a spanking. I thought is was very sexy and loved the characters. Wish the ending was drawn out a bit more. But my first book by M. A. Church was great gonna try others.
