A prisoner responsible for a mall massacre that occurred the night The Preacher was taken down is executed, with a well-placed bullet fired from nearly a mile away. The sniper is clearly a professional—either military or law enforcement—and leaves zero evidence, other than a note.
When a series of suspected rapists and murderers turn up dead, the killer’s pattern becomes clear: they’re acting as judge, jury, and executioner for cases that were brushed off by the cops. How could a person not cheer a little?
Until the spotlight is shone on one of the FBI’s own.
Ultimately, it’s a matter of right or wrong. Winter knows just where that line is—she learned the night her parents were slaughtered and her baby brother disappeared. That night made her who she is, and she’ll uphold the law, even for scumbags who deserve to die. Even while the ghosts of her past grow closer and closer.

Boy did I struggle to finish this book. What started out as an interesting series has become a bit mundane and same-same in book 5. I had a hard time believing these characters are legit FBI agents. They acted more like high school students than proper grown ups. I ended up skim reading in order to finish. Don’t think I’ll continue with the series, even though I want more answers about Winter’s brother.
Disappointing and a struggle. Imagine, say, ten high school students in a classroom..... Now imagine each one has the hots for another one. Imagine the immature reactions and the jealously. Well, that's what you have in this book...... except they're FBI agents. Yeah.... All wrapped up in the weakest plot. In fact, it felt like any old plot would've sufficed just so long as the Lonely Federal Hearts Club could convene. If you're starting to wonder that I might not have liked this book, then let me say I thought the first two books were good. Their plots were cleverly crafted, interesting and the agents did what I expected feds to do. However, this time it all went south in a hurry. I don't know, nor do I actually need to know, how the FBI investigate a case. What I do know is, make it sound somewhat realistic and I'll enjoy it. There was very little enjoyment to be had from this caper. There are now way too many characters all seemingly vying for top spot; all becoming unlikable.
I really was hooked on this series in the first several books but in this book the characters just got ridiculous. First of all, the ongoing relationship drama is something so sophomoric it's laughable. And there are way too many characters vying to be the main protagonists. The story line was much better when Winter was the main character with Noah without all of these others thrown in the mix. I don't understand what the whole drama about will they or won't they is all about. It' s getting old but hopefully the next book will be better. I'm giving this author another chance before I find something else to read.
I enjoyed the first few in this series. It wasn’t in depth writing but it was enjoyable to breeze through the story without getting dragged down with anything heartier. But I struggled through this one so much that I finally just quit outright. It’s full of way too much relationship drama when there are actually zero relationships happening. I don’t think these are YA books but they should be, as it is very juvenile even though these are adults. Instead of trying to pop out book after book in this series the author should have went slower and focused on quality rather than quantity.
Omg Mary Stone, you are amazing!!! I have thoroughly enjoyed every single one of Winters stories. She has come so far in such a short time. I am enjoying getting to see sides of her that are just coming out. She’s turning into quite the FBI Agent. Watching how her relationships are evolving is great too. Her interactions with Noah and Autumn. Even Aiden is changing. All in a good way. They have now become a team! Personally I think her and Autumn should be paired up in the next story. I think we know there’ll be more on Autumns creepy employer too and was expecting a bigger ending with that. Please keep them coming Mary Stone because these stories are so so addicting and we can’t get enough of them. Thank you for allowing me to be in you ARC Team. I will and have been recommending everyone that I come across to read the Winter Black Series, every chance I get!!!
Well Mary Stone, you did again. Another Winter Black story that had lots of twists and turns and I could not stop reading. All the characters were brought back and we learned a little more about them. Can't wait to see how all the characters evolve especially Winter and Noah. Also, really like the interaction between Autumn and Winter. I am so glad to be in your Arc. Can't wait for the series to continue. Thank you Mary for the great read.
Winter's Ghost is the 5th book in the Winter Black series. If possible I think each book improves in this series. I love the growth of Winter's character in the series. So many twists and turns, never know what to expect next. You will find yourself drawn into this storyline and waiting with baited breathe to see what will happen next. I definitely would recommend this book to those that enjoy thrillers.
This is a really good series. The only thing that I don’t love is the supernatural elements are growing in frequency. It’s not taking away from the depth of the characters, but it just doesn’t seem needed. I am enjoying the series even though I am not crazy about the visions and feelings that are becoming more frequent in the stories.
These books keep getting better and better. Mary Stone is an amazing story teller. Warning to the would be reader....plan on doing nothing else while reading this series. Prepare to be blown away as the story takes you through all the twist and turns.
At this point, the books are getting kind of harder to read. They have a really slow build up to a short ending of catching the bad guy, then leave you in suspense for the next book so you want to read it. Kinda annoying but here I am still 😅
This one was a little tougher to read. A lot of the same ole same ole! I will continue to read the series because I want to find out what happened to Justin and I love these types of books!
Relationships, vigilante justice and office politics
Winter and her FBI crew are back and this time they are struggling with the case optics. They are searching for a killer, an immensely talented one, but his victims...they are rapists and murderers who the police did not capture. Along with the case, Winter has her head trying to wrap around the feelings she has for Noah and Aiden, her thoughts on Autumn and maybe Aiden, her missing brother and oh heck let’s throw in investigating a fellow agent as the potential sniper.
Sun takes a different role in this book, and I have to say I loved it! Her character showed more vulnerability and kept her snark. Autumn is taking on anew path with her new job and friendships with Winter and Noah. I hope she and Aiden have a good relationship and I am excited to see what the deal is with her supervisor who creeps her out, especially since Aiden is worried about the job offer due to the firms reputation and status of not hiring just anyone.
I love the concept of this series, it’s a new fresh mystery series with a paranormal twist. I hope the mystery/detective theme becomes more prominent with the reader being kept guessing and less of the teen angst ‘romance’ triangle theme that permeates the books.
Do women really think the way poor Winter is portrayed here, like some simpering miss consumed by teen hormones and uncertainty? The books would be far better with less of this.
Great concept, romance a bit tedious and getting old.
Possible spoiler alert at end: I had wanted this series to be awesome! I really loved the first two books. But it’s just getting old and too much of nothing happening in 300 pages. I probably will read the other four because I wanna know how it ends but I really hope they get better. I don’t mind the author’s writing style and she’s definitely talented but pages of uninteresting and unrelated info. And who is the ghost? Her brother? Barely mentioned ~ again ~ in this book.
Goodness! It has been a while since a series has grabbed a hold of me and gripped me like this "Winter Black" series. I peeked at the next book and see that the one serious situation still will not be resolved. I hope it will be soon. I don't know how much my heart and my patience can take! Geez! Onto "Winter's Secret."
You did it again. Awesome story that had me wanting more. I could not put the book down. I can not wait to see Noah and Winter's love story come to life. I definitely can not wait for the next book in the series.
I didn't enjoy this one as much as the other 4 books in the series. Just too much relationship angst. Without that -- or with just LESS of it -- I would have given this 4 stars.

Winter’s Ghost is Book five in Mary Stone’s Winter Black series. I have been hooked since i read the first book in this series. While this book was not as good as the others it was still good. This series is incredible and i can't wait to read the next one ! They all are fast paced, clever and kept my attention with their gripping plots. Mary Stone has kept me on the edge of my seat turning the pages with every book.I enjoyed the suspense and development of the characters. Winter , Aiden , and Noah all seem like family now. I can't wait to jump into book 6 Winter Secret later today. If you would like to read these wonderful books you can read them for free on kindle unlimited. #MaryStone #Winterblack #Wintersghost
Most suspenseful book so far, and that's saying a lot.
I stated reading this series a week ago, and it has been a week well spent. Mary Stone has created vivid, memorable characters and crisp, believable dialogue, along with stories that are exciting, suspenseful, and moving. She takes you to the edge of your seat and keeps you teetering there until the end. You care about her characters, whether they're heroes or villains, and this book was no exception.
"Winter's Ghost" is a book of juxtapositions. What is wrong and what is right in relationships, both personal and working? Do the ends justify the means? Who decides what is wrong and what is right? Why do good people sometimes do very bad things for very right reasons, and when they do bad things, should they face consequences?
I loved the duality throughout, as the FBI hunts for the killer who's killing killers. The moral dilemma was deeply explored and all viewpoints were given weight and validity.
This was also one of the few procedurals that visited the mind numbing and soul crushing drudgery of a lengthy investigation. There is tedium, a great deal of tedium, broken by episodes of violence and horror. The necessity of finding a support system and stress relief is a recurring theme.
The Winter Black series, and the accompanying Autumn Trent series, both feature strong, capable, and accomplished females dedicating their lives to dangerous, male dominated professions.
Page 38 and I’m done with the book, done with the series
This would have been my fifth of the Winter Black serried, but I’m done. Here the team reverts back to the mass shooting that was going on the night the Preacher was killed. The killers were two young men following some fundamentalist beliefs fed to them by a Jaime (who will, of course, wind up being Winter’s brother or a substitute). Before going going in the boys slipped on some SS armbands just for fun.
Now the story is investigating them and throughout the series the author has used many of Virginia’s colleges and universities (you know where I’m going and you’re already cringing). As the story begins I’m thinking, “please don’t let those killers be from Virginia Tech, ANY other school, or don’t refer to their school at all, but....”
Prayers in vain. The boys were students at Virginia Tech. No need for them to be from VT or anywhere, but the author just had to pile on to a school that has come through the fire, to disrespect those who lost their lives that April day and to use the pain of many for a little titillating factor for her novel. Not OK. Not acceptable. You are a vulture and I don’t want to read one more word of what you write.
Book five in the Winter FBI series is about a serial killer of bad people who have committed crimes against women and girls but has eluded the police. Does he deserved a medal or need to be locked up?
Probably starting with #5 of this series is not a good idea, but pretty sure that is not the only problem to contend with. There are too many characters, all working with the FBI...sometimes they are referred to by their last name, sometimes their first and sometimes by rank, and never having met any of them before, they all seem cookie cutter like. There is a lot of fluid relationship issues, and history....who is hooked up with who, and who used to be, and who works with who present and historical, and in what capacity and then there is the frequent popping up of romantic angst. The actual story seems to take a backseat to all the personal issues and history, which might not have been so bad if at this point I had enough insight into their characters to even be able to separate them from each other. I've read 3 books by this author and had a problem with 2 of them so I think I'll give up on her. It seems she has a lot of fans, so I think she'll survive without me.
When a prisoner who is partially responsible for a small massacre is gunned down by a sniper rifle from about a mile away, the FBI is brought in n on the case. As more men are killed, it comes out that all of them are predators in some way and that the killer is a vigilante. This leads to some ambivalence with regards to catching him although Winter knows that it's a matter of right and wrong even when the victims deserve to die.
I have really enjoyed this series and this book was a good read. However, it was slow in places and had some continuity issues. I was also disappointed that Winter is still battling emotions in parts of her life. It goes between her being a strong woman to someone who doubts herself at every turn. I am still looking forward to the next book and the rest of the series. I do recommend this book and highly recommend the series which I suggest you read in order.

Good Storyline, But... I liked the main arc of the plot. It was intense and interesting for sure. However, this particular book in the series felt like someone had slipped some extra hormones into a crowd of LEOs that had already displayed a penchant for sleeping with each other. WTH? It seemed like a high school dance, complete with the jealous eye-rolling and name-calling. Only the hair-pulling was missing. It seemed like each agent had picked out someone they wanted to "tango" with, and each time their brains wandered from the task at hand, they found themselves plotting how to make things happen.
Without the high school hi-jinks, this is a great story in the Winter Black series.
