"My silence is not weakness, but the beginning of my revenge."
Lucien
Eve is gone. They took her from me.
I will have my revenge.
So I train. Hone my body and my mind.
But rage burns in my veins. Fuels my anger.
I let it fester and grow to use against him:
The Devil’s Soldier.
I will destroy everything he knows.
Eve
The world believes I’m dead. It’s the only way.
For now, I hide in the shadows.
Growing stronger, more determined.
For the Devil’s Soldier must be stopped.
And I will stop him!
Only then can I be with the man I love.

Rachel lives in New Hampshire, a place secretly known for its supernatural creatures. When she's not in her writing lair, she's partying with her husband and four children. Her love for storytelling began as a child when the moon first possessed the night. For when the lights went out, her imagination painted a whole new world. And what a scary world it was…
Another review that doesn’t come easy to me at all, I had to read this one after reading the first two books in this series and needing to go on. That is a testament to the author’s brilliance and ability to leave the reader needing more.
It is more of a feat than it seems on the surface; the first two books appeared unedited. This is a serious pet peeve of mine because in a world of “everyone’s an author” and independent publishing, I feel like unedited books give the entire indie publishing industry a bad name. I also feel like, “if you cannot be bothered to hire editors and proofers, why should I spend my time on your work”, basically.
BUT – Book 1 hooked me. Despite the aforementioned pet peeves, I needed to know what happened – to the point that I bought and read Book 2. Book Two was even worse with a major character’s name actually changing – it was unreal... but it still left me hanging. Despite my loathe of unpolished, unedited books, I pre-ordered Book 3 because I had to know how this series turns out… and here we are.
The editing in this book is still bad… if I had to guess, I’d say that this book is unedited and un-proofed. We had Sable in Book 1, Sabel in Book 2 and now she’s back to Sable. As if that’s not enough we’ve got Tom Russel slash Tom Russell and a detrimental, antagonist organization that switches between DSRD and DHRD – it is so annoying to see such basic mistakes. I’m not just being a snob here, the grammar is terrible throughout the series and the only thing that’s consistent about the punctuation is its inconsistency.
HOWEVER – The content is good. The poor grammar and constant mistakes and name change-ups are a major distraction that definitely add to the time I needed to spend reading this book… and there are a couple of key continuity issues but… for the most part this picks up where Book 2 left off. There is lots of action and some romance. There is violence, there are fights, there is conspiracy… what we have here is clearly an author with a brilliant mind and infinite imagination.
I’d call the characters complex; they’re all brilliantly designed and they all stay true to who they are throughout the series, despite their major tribulations. In fact, for some of them, it’s because of who they are that they can survive such challenges. I don’t want to give anything away so I cannot give examples here – just a sort of undocumented praise.
She’s brilliant at description and painting a pretty specific picture in the reader’s mind without being over descriptive. Also in this installment of the series, there were some really epic magical battles that would rival some of those in the Harry Potter books.
I’d love to read her other works, but I’m not going to put myself through it based on the lack of editing I experienced in this series.
We can’t all be good at everything; I’m just going to hope that she hires an editor or proofer to clean up her work so that it can look professional and be worthy of the attention I’d want it to get if it were professionally put out.
The bottom line seems to be – this is a 5-star story, dragged down to a 3-star total package by a lack of editing.
Wow what a twisty read this was. Written in dual pov we had so many nearly moments between Lucian and Eve, but life, magic and Boaz seem determined to keep this pair apart. This is a rewrite of a book originally released under the authors other pen name, Rachel McClellan and it was the one where I felt the most changes had been made.
In my original review I’d felt a lack of emotion and hadn’t believed in the depth of the connection between Lucian and Eve – my word that was no longer true. You could feel the sparks from the electricity this pair generated. I was totally convinced of the passion, longing and love between them. The emotional battles they both endured was exhausting but in the best way possible.
The book will break your heart at times, have you on the edge of your seat at others and will keep you wondering about just what will happen next. Some books I’ve read recently felt a little stale, they failed to capture me, this one thoroughly entertained me and I can’t wait to read the final part of this story.
I absolutely LOVED the first two books in this series. I think maybe I had too high of hopes for this one to deliver the same (or greater) feelings as the previous two. There's tragedy, sorrow, depression, loss, loss, and more loss in this story. I never felt a lift from it. And Eve's attitude and decisions on how to deal with problems just straight up ticked me off. Lucien was just ramming his head into a brick wall the whole time. Their relationship went from being super "awwww"-worthy to "Omg, Lucien should just give up on her already!" Pretty sad that I reached that level of frustration with it. =/ But who knows? Maybe the next installment will redeem all that. I'm assuming there will be one since there were MAJOR plotlines left unresolved.
I give this whole series 5 stars. It was so good, I didn't want to put my kindle down. This was full of a fight for good, and evil, love, friendship, and more. The characters were relatable, well developed, and wonderful. This last book ended, in a way that the series could go on. Is it supposed to? I do hope so. I recommend this series to everyone who likes paranormal books, with magic, and vampires.
Loved this book! I like how the author took the viewpoints from all of the main characters. I started it and couldn't put it down. I still love Lucien and his need for Eve and how he learns to powerful. I still love the ability to incorporate all supernaturals in one book. I will waiting for the next book in the series.
I started this series thinking I would stop at book one. I'm so glad I continued! The author did amazing with character development. The ending the way she did leaves Eve's story open just enough to continue the series, but with enough closure that I'm happy if it ends there.
Okay, I'm torn between giving this book either two stars or going with three. I very rarely give two stars. Life is too short to read bad books so if I truly am not liking a story or where I see it going, it just becomes a DNF. My problem with giving it three is I usually rank 3 star books as "okay" books - not great but okay and if asked, would usually tell people that the book was worth the read, even if it wasn't one of the best. To me, this one was DEFINITELY not worth a three star rating, so I guess two stars it is. I'm actually leaning towards 2.5 stars since I had already invested in the first two books of the series ( but I still think that's generous. )
First of all, I liked the first book ( hence the 3 stars) but there were also many things wrong- such as editing, consistency and just the quality of the world building. Now for whatever reason, the second book struck a cord with me. Possibly because it was from Lucien's view and partly because it had moments of extreme credibility and it was nice to see Lucien struggling with himself and to see his personality develop. I truly liked the second book- definitely a step up with the new narrator.
Color me surprised to find out that I pretty much HATED this book. I seriously thought about just stopping several times during the story, but after reading the first 3 1/2 books I thought "what the heck, might as well find out what happens......."
Why did I hate it? Well, for whatever reason, even though the narrator was better than the first books narrator, he drove me insane during his reading of this book. He screeching voice that he used for some of the women characters was extremely distracting. Story wise, the one word to describe this book was FRUSTRATING.
What in the world happened to common sense? Really, you're going to trust Leanne again after she betrayed you to your parents and then they BURIED YOU ALIVE??!! And even though it's apparent that you are stronger with Lucien than without him (magic wise as well as emotionally) why do you keep ditching him and shutting him out? And Charlie, he knows what's going to happen, yet he waits until 30 seconds before he dies to give a small snippet of advice? There's so much more that I could go on about, but I don't even want to take the time to write about a book I really didn't like (at least not today)
And the ending, geez, could it be more depressing? Actually, the whole series, but especially this book was a bit too dark for me. Maybe I'm just out of my comfort zone. I do know one thing, I will NOT be reading any more of this series. And actually, with a title of The Devil, I think that may be the smart thing for my sanity.
Omg, I didn't think The Devils Soldier could be better than the first and second book but it Is, I'd give it a 10 if I could. This one was Lucien's and Eve's POV, I love how much it switched back n forth so we could see their thoughts n feelings. Tons of action, the bloody good kind, some twist n turns that just made the book epic and I did cry. Now I know for sure the series is o my YA, I wish it was PG13, I think it would make Lucien and Eve's love more intense and deeper. The story is so good that I really don't notice I'm reading a YA in the romance department because there is so much going on that sucks you in.. I did not skim and finished in a day because I couldn't put it down. No cliffhanger at all. Thank you Rachel for the wonderful time.
I don't like spoilers so I will try not to give any but still review. Boaz is back with some new tricks to make sure Eve comes to him, so he can have Alarica back but does he truly care for Eve as a person? Lucian, along with everyone else at the Deific will do anything to save Eve. Lucian & Eve become closer but they still have personal and worldly battles to fight. Charlie is a major part of their unique relationship and the one he shares with Lucian is hilarious. I will admit that I feel the story, many parts were predictable. Some of the same scenes dragged on while others did not have enough. That being said it was still a wonderful read.
I really struggle with the reviews for this series I completely have mixed emotions I need to know what happens/ what will happen the story keeps me engaged to a certain extent just enough to keep me hanging on but I’m in love with it no will I reread no will it stick with me sure some parts but not enough to become a favorite and that is so aggravating because knowing all of that I should be able to just let this one go not all books are meant for everyone but I just can’t seem to .. one more book then I’m free! Please book gods make this one the best and please oh please make this one worth all the time I have into this series be worth it
I'm memorized by each of the authors words in this series ...I thought none could get better than the 1st..and I'd quickly lose attention. I couldn't of been more wrong...each book has more and more love, deception, surprisingly turns in events..mysteries than the previous ones...Let's not forget all of the magical creatures!! Discredit in such detail that brings them alive. I'm not lying regarding this series..it's a work of fantasy art. Now I must finally go to the last story in series, with excitement. Yet also with regret that it's the last....Rita
Wow. Alot of powerful emotions and happenings in this one.
Eve must return to Alarica to finally succeed in defeating Boaz. This time she has more fatalities on ger hands, and closer to home that she might not be able to deal with.
Lucien has already decided he loves eve with all he is. He's assured her that whatever Alarica does its NOT eve. But she can remember everything....
The ending is a little sad and yet understandable. But there's still so many things left unanswered and so many things to be finished.
we start this one off where every one believe she is dead.. ( but with these books i not use that i believe the person at the end of this is dead... it don't see that they actually died at all) surprise surprise she is alive and living in hiding away from her old lover.
Again she has blown me away with a great addition to this series. i can't wait to jump in to the next book to see what happens but i hope that it is more of eve and Lucien healing process and see them come together more of their relationship
Of all of the Devil Series books, "The Devil's Soldier" is the weakest. There is a difference in the covers, the plot and overall direction of the series. Some many things were off, from the characters reactions to situations to underdeveloped scenes. This read was mediocre for me because there wasn't any depth. This read took me way too long to finished. The reason is that I could only tolerate a few pages at a time. So often I thought that I would not finish it and at this point, I am not even sure if I want to read the final book. Oh well, I'll have to think about this one.
Another good book in this series, but with the standard 'written too fast with not enough care or development' kind of theme. The storyline itself I really enjoyed, and it's made more interesting by not knowing what will happen with Boaz - there is a fourth book so are they successful in their attempts?! I wish we knew more about Alarica and where exactly that personality came from. Still, I enjoyed the further character development, and didn't expect the ending!
Lucian and Eve make a powerful couple! This author has done a great job with the characters in her stories.. each and every one of them are powerful in their own way. The story it self is written with powerful word's that make you wonder could this be more than just make believe?
Again I'm not disappointed but am intrigued to see where this storyline goes. It has proven to be quite the journey and entanglement of lives. What will become of Eve and Lucien and all the others in between? I'm preparing to read the fourth in this series and see where it takes me. Fascinating read!😁
This is this a great series, I can't wait to read the last book. At this point you feel like you know the characters and get attached to them and their struggles.
What a struggle. I enjoyed the first two books in this series, but I was really disappointed with this instalment. It just seemed to drag on and go in circles. I just really struggled to read it, but was determined to finish.
This winter has good skills, but falls into the trap of relying upon the same old same old in terms of violence, characters flaws and repetitiveness... and the extensive use of foreshadowing means.....sigh, no mystery here!
Yep, this is the last one I read of this series. The storyline would take about 1 chapter to tell. The rest of it is all internal angst from the main characters. And it is pretty predictable what they are going to do.
Wow this series just keeps getting better. The characters suck you deep into the story amid the action, emotions, manipulations and brutality. This one will keep you enthralled and in the edge of your seat! Brilliant.
