Little sister Maureen has a new mission in life: to find a real life four leaf clover. Maureen has also taken up a new habit of fibbing. When she tells everyone about her fake cousin from Canada who lives in a castle and her other fake cousin who works with pop sensation Joy’D, her fictional family reunion becomes more than the young girl can manage, much to her older sister Wendy’s enjoyment. While Maureen struggles to try her luck with her lie, Wendy has some major drama in her relationship with Max. These sisters are going to need all the luck they can get!

About the author

Christophe Cazenove was born in Martigues in 1969. A lifelong comics fan, Christophe's first efforts led to a twelve year career … in supermarkets! Toward the tenth year of his employment in frozen foods, one of his projects attracted the attention of comics writer and editor Olivier Sulpice: Predictions of Nostra. After that, he regularly worked for French publisher Bamboo putting his humor to work on series like Gendarmes, the Fire, the Driving School and finally The Sisters. He also participates in the collection "Sport" with Basketball Dunk while writing less thematic stories, such as Area 51. He is also co-writer of the collection "Fades". More recently, he wrote the screenplay for Eden Globe-Trotter, The Adventures of Gullia, My Mother and Me.

1/19/2021 Hunh, I didn't realize this creative team was basically two dudes, with William Ramos Jr on the lettering. The book feels very authentically female, as it tells the story of two sisters, teenage Wendy and the much younger Maureen, and their hilarious relationships with one another, their family and friends.

Well, story insofar as this is mostly a collection of one-page vignettes loosely revolving around the theme of Maureen being quite the lucky brat (do I betray my older sister sympathies here? Probably.) There's plot development in terms of Wendy and her boyfriend Mason becoming more serious, and even enduring a bit of a rough patch, but mostly it's a slice-of-life humor comic. One nice touch were the few interspersed pages showing the sisters as adults looking back on their childhood. Overall, it's a sweet story with gentle humor appropriate for all ages but especially for Wendy and Maureen's own demographics. Were I a younger reader, I would be completely charmed.

What I was completely charmed by as an adult was the delightful art that perfectly captures the kinetic energy of being this young, coupled with an adorable expressiveness of both face and motion. And that's even before you notice all the sly little pop culture references thrown in, as editor Jim Salicrup helpfully lists in the afterword! I thought I'd noticed most of them while peering owlishly at my PC screen the first go-through, but had to go back so I could fully experience and savor all the terrific little Easter eggs hidden throughout.

Ably translated by Nanette McGuiness, this volume of The Sisters is perfect for anyone looking for a little light escapism and humor. Had I encountered this as a young girl/teenager struggling with her own contentious relationship with her annoying younger sister, I would likely be ride or die for this title. It lacks the depth I look for as a reading adult, but is just perfect for any youngster who can read graphic novels on their own.

Another delightful book with Maureen and Wendy showing the highs and lows of sisterhood. Whether it's Maureen trying to read Wendy's diary or driving Wendy nuts as she searches for the perfect four leaf clover. We again get to see glimpses of the two of them all grown up as well as time with their parents. A fast read and an enjoyable one.

Readers will identify with these sisters' relationship. The love runs underneath all of the fighting and adventures. Middle graders and older readers will appreciate the humor and reality.
