Irish Pride: Irish Thoroughbred / Sullivan's Woman

Rate this book
Irish Pride collects two novels about women pursuing second chances and finding love in the most unexpected places…

Irish Thoroughbred
With no immediate family or place to call home, Adelia Cunnane’s life in Ireland has come to an end. Her future lies in America, where an uncle guarantees her a job working beside him on a horse farm in Maryland. Caring for horses comes naturally for Dee, who has always had an affinity for animals―a talent her employer Travis Grant recognizes. He also recognizes a fiery passion simmering within her soul. But even as Dee gives in to her own desires, she finds herself falling in love with a man who keeps a tight rein on his heart.

Sullivan’s Woman
Despite possessing a look envied and desired by everyone she meets, Cassidy St. John’s modeling career has stalled. So when famous painter Colin Sullivan wants her as the model for what he believes will be his visionary masterpiece, she knows this isn’t just a job but a chance to be immortalized. And as Colin strives to capture Cassidy’s allure, both artist and subject realize their growing attraction for one another cannot be contained on a canvas.

I do not understand why publishers think it's a good idea to republish books written in the 80s as new. I don't know why I'm a fan of Nora Roberts, I find her books formulatory. But I got into them when I was younger so when I see a new book of hers I pick it up. I love Irish culture and magicks so alot of her stories while predictable and boring do have interesting settings, descriptions and themes. I picked this book up thinking it was a new book set in Ireland, Oh boy was I wrong. This two republished stories written in the 80s when Rape culture was all the rage. *eyeroll* Forcing a woman and assaulting her IS NOT SEXY! How in the same story she can condem and have an attempted rapist be the "bad guy" but the "sexy hero" forces the "poor victim" to kiss him numerous times and that makes her "swoon, fall in love" is so ridiculous and offensive. In this new worls of Cancel Culture can we please Cancel this!!!!!

I generally like Nora Roberts books for their entertainment and easy reading value. Although I enjoyed the story lines in the two previously published books (Irish Thoroughbred and Sullivan's Woman), the stories just struck me wrong. Both involved an employer-employee relationship where the male was often domineering (hello Me Too!). I do have to state that there was no sexual relationship until the woman consented, but the man was definitely aggressive with kissing and often to play on the power structure over the woman. I really wonder what I would have thought if I read this 20 years ago. But context and perspectives change. And if the stories were written between a man and woman who were not in an employer/employee relationship, I may also have a different perspective.

Another pick off my brother's shelf, once again some language that I don't like that is why only 4 star. Another March pick for St. Pat's Month. Two books in one again: "With no immediate family or place to call home, Adelia Cunnane's life in Ireland has come to an end. Her future lies in America, where an uncle guarantees her a job working beside him on a horse farm in Maryland." Sulivan's Woman: "Despite possesing a look envied and desired by everyone she meets, Cassidy St. John's modeling career has stalled. ....a famous painter Colin Sullivan wants her as the model for what he believes will be his visionary masterpiece...."

This was a 2-in-1 book. Her books are typically quick reads for me but I enjoy them. But this is the reason I read it so fast. In this one the first is Irish Thoroughbred and it is actually part of the Irish Hearts trilogy. I will be reading the other two books in that trilogy really soon. For this one, I really enjoyed the characters in both stories and the stubbornness of the female characters because I can related to stubbornness.

There are two stories in this book. Both are the varieties I call misunderstanding stories. One of the characters is in love with the other but thinks there is no chance for them. The stories tell you how everything works out. They are simple and give the author a chance to practice building characters.

Great story of a girl living in Ireland with her aunt. After the death of the aunt, Adelia goes to America to live with her uncle. She is well received by him in his loving arms. They live on a horse farm which is wonderful for Adelia as she has a special way with animals.

I finished as much as possible. This is a two book title, I read the first & just couldn't finish the 2nd. Just not my cup of tea with dominating men & utterly innocent young women. Made my stomach turn.

Charming, old fashioned love story set in the fascinating world of thoroughbred racing.
