Murder With a View

Rate this book
Murder With a View is the third book in the delightful cozy mystery series from Diane Kelly set in Nashville, Tennessee—where the real estate market is to die for…

A DREAM PROPERTY

Carpenter Whitney Whitaker, her cousin Buck, and guard-cat Sawdust just scored a hot property near downtown Nashville in a tax sale. While the Music City Motor Court might not be much to look at now, the two plan to transform the motel’s twelve units into six one-bedroom condominiums with popular mid-century styling. But surprises await when Whitney discovers a squatter living in Room 9 and her cat Sawdust uncovers a body in the bed next door.

A LIVING NIGHTMARE

The murder victim is none other than Beckett Morgan, an up-and-coming country-western singing sensation who’s taken Nashville by storm with his number-one hit “Party in the Pasture.” Beckett’s left a long trail of broken promises and broken hearts, and the list of suspects seems endless. So does the line of female fans intent on halting the flip and turning the construction site into a shrine for the deceased star. If Whitney and Buck don’t help Detective Collin Flynn nail the killer, they’ll never be able to clear out the star-obsessed groupies, complete the remodel, and recoup their investment. But just who silenced the singer and why?

After reading the sixth and seventh books in the house-flipper series by Diane Kelly, I decided I wanted to read the first five books in the series. I recently read and reviewed the first two books and this is my review of book three. Murder With a View continues to feature Whitney Whitaker, Sawdust, Whitney’s cousin Buck Whitaker, and Detective Collin Flynn. The author continues to bring a mix of murder, police and amateur investigation, cute animals, some humor, and the beginnings of a couple of romances.

Whitney and Buck have started flipping houses together. Their latest project is a mid-century twelve-unit motel that they plan to turn into six single-bedroom condominiums with mid-century styling. Located within walking distance of downtown Nashville, Tennessee, they feel this is a sure thing. Unfortunately, surprises await them. Whitney finds a squatter living in Room 9 and Sawdust finds a body in the bed next door. The murder victim is Beckett Morgan, a rising country-western singing star. He’s left behind broken promises and broken hearts so there’s a long list of suspects.

Whitney is inquisitive, punctual, personable, believes in progress as well as preservation, and doesn’t like having restrictions put on her. She loves fixing up properties and pays attention to detail, but often puts herself in danger. She also likes to stay home and cuddle with Sawdust and talk with her roommates. This series has Whitney’s cat Sawdust’s thoughts interspersed throughout the book in a few short chapters. While they aren’t necessary to the story line, they provide some humor and insights that made them enjoyable. Buck is amiable, an excellent carpenter, and responsible for the structural aspects of the renovations. Collin is determined, smart, and perceptive. He’s not good at compartmentalizing and has an erratic work schedule that makes relationships difficult. He also doesn’t jump to conclusions, but follows the evidence.

The author is a great storyteller and managed to pull me into the narrative quickly. The main characters are likeable and relatable. The plot has a few twists and turns and a couple of subplots and the story moved at a good pace. The world-building was well-done and the story is sprinkled with light humor. I also enjoyed learning something about Whitney’s life besides the renovation and the murder mystery. My biggest quibble is that Collin tends to overshare investigation information with Whitney and even take her on interviews with persons of interest to the case. This felt unrealistic. Additionally, some of Whitney’s internal dialogue got repetitive as she mentally reviewed the case and the suspects.

Overall, this is a fun, light, entertaining, and enjoyable cozy mystery with great characterization and some humor. It has just the right amount of mystery, renovation, romance, and creative twists. I’m looking forward to reading more books in this series. Those who enjoy cozy mysteries will likely find this an entertaining read.

I purchased a copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. This book was originally published on February 09, 2021.

Murder With a View by Diane Kelly is the third book in the cozy House-Flipper Mystery series. As with most cozy mysteries each of these books in the series could be read as a standalone if choosing to do so as the mystery within is fully solved during the book. There is of course some character development carried over book to book for those fans following in order from the beginning.

In the House-Flipper Mystery series Whitney Whitaker had been working as a property manager to pay the bills while she had been living in her parents pool house with her cat, Sawdust. Real estate and renovating were really Whitney’s passions so whenever she got the chance she was diving into the house flipping business with her cousin.

This time around Whitney had her heart set on winning the auction for an old rundown motel in Nashville. The plan was to turn the property into upscale condominiums but as work was starting Whitney and crew found a body on the property which happened to be a famous musician. With another murderer to find Whitney teams up with her detective boyfriend to track down the killer all the while working on the new renovation.

The House-Flipper Mystery series is another cozy series that I have followed from the beginning after finding that cute quirkiness factor that I enjoy. This series differs a little from others by having an extra point of view thrown into the mix in addition to main character, Whitney, with that of her kitty, Sawdust, also getting a voice. Being an HGTV addict and loving kitties it seems impossible for me to not enjoy this series and this latest installment was another fun mystery yet again.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

In this third installment in Diane Kelly's House-Flipping Mystery series, Whitney and her cousin Buck are excited about their latest project - turning an old, run-down motel into condos. Unfortunately, their excitement is short-lived when they discover a squatter and a dead body on the property.

A fun read, with memorable characters, and a well-crafted mystery. Whitney is a down-to-earth and likable protagonist, and I care about her and the people in her life. I will definitely be back for another visit with her and the gang. This installment can easily be read as a standalone.

HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY 2-9-21!

Murder With a View is book number three of Diane Kelly’s House Flipper Mysteries series. The first two books are Dead As A Door Knocker (2019) and Dead In The Doorway (2020). Whitney Whitaker and her cousin Buck Whitaker are flipping houses together in Nashville, Tennessee. Unfortunately, there seem to be dead bodies coming out of the woodwork on each new project.

In Murder With A View, Whitney, Buck, and a surprising new silent partner purchase an abandoned 1960’s hotel just across the Cumberland River from downtown Nashville. The Music City Motor Court has stunning views and easy access to a pedestrian footbridge leading to the hugely popular “SoBro” area of downtown. The Whitakers intend on transforming the twelve rooms into six luxury condos. On the first day of ownership, Whitney discovers a man living in one of the rooms. She and Buck decide this Navy Veteran, Jimmy, is okay and hire him to help with the renovation. The next morning, as they continue to clear out the rooms, Whitney’s cat, Sawdust, finds a dead body in one of the rooms.

The victim turns out to be Beckett Morgan, a new country singer who had a big hit with his recent song “Party In the Pasture”. There is a long list of suspects for Whitney’s homicide detective boyfriend, Collin Flynn, to track down. Along the way, things take a turn in the simmering romance between Buck and Whitney’s roommate, Collette. With Whitney and Sawdust’s help, the murderer is captured in a dramatic scene.

My absolute favorite part of the novel is the song lyrics to “Party In The Pasture”. I can’t say I have ever been to a party in a pasture, but I imagine most folks in rural areas have been. According to the lyrics, “There’s never a wrong time for a party in the pasture,” so there’s still time for me to get “pasture-ized”. Knowing what a wicked sense of humor Diane Kelly has, it didn’t surprise me she could write such a fun country song. Here’s what she told me when I asked her about her inspiration:

"My cousin (who grew up in Stamford, a small town near Abilene, Texas) told me a joke years ago that “you might be from a small town if you’ve ever attended a party in a pasture.” It stuck with me. I had a little help with people on my FaceBook author page suggesting lyrics. I love writing songs. Years ago when we lived in Nashville I went to a songwriting festival in Gatlinburg. It was so much fun!"

5 Cozy Stars for this fun mystery. I am looking forward to the next flip on an abandoned church. Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for my Advanced Reader Copy. The novel is expected to be published on February 9, 2021. Be sure to add it to your To Be Read List!

Over the past year, I have been becoming more of a fan of Diane Kelly's various cozy series. And actually this book is really 4.5 stars for me. Not perfect, but an entertaining mystery with characters you want to get to know better. Whitney Whitaker and her cousin, Buck, plan to transform a derelict old motel into a motor court condo location with the added value of a great skyline view of Nashville. Unfortunately, the discovery of the body of a rising star in country music may keep them from being able to recoup their outlay. So Whitney, along with her police detective, Collin, investigate using means that correspond to their particular strengths. While I settled on the guilty party fairly early, the getting there was quite fun. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

It was barely sunup on a day in the middle of May when I was wakened by the sensation of my fluffy, buff-colored cat headbutting my cheek with his furry forehead.

This is the third book in the House-Flipper series and they get better with each book. Whitney and Buck along with a silent partner have bought an abandoned 1960s motel . Their first surprise is discovering a squatter in one of the rooms. They decide the Navy Veteran would be great as an extra set of hands and hire him. The following day, Sawdust leads Whitney to the body of an up and coming country singer.

There are so many things to love about this book. First of all, Whitney is a strong independent woman who can hold her own in a male dominated business. She and her cousin Buck are a perfect foil to each other. Whitney's relationship with Detective Collin Flynn is mature and stable.

I love that Sawdust gets his own chapters. As a cat owner( or more accurately, someone who is owned by cats), I love seeing Sawdust's thoughts. Adding the little kitten, Cleo, makes me so happy. Just the little things like how kittens get ahead of themselves and bounce off walls lets be know that the author is also "owned" by cats.

I learn new things about renovation when I read these books. I really appreciate that Whitney has such amazing plans for the motor court. I can visualize the completed project.

The singer's biggest hit, Party in the Pasture made me smile. I had never heard of such until my college roommate took me home with her to her small town. I found myself making up a melody to go with the words to the song.

The mystery is very good with twists and turns that kept me guessing. I thought I had it all figured out and something would change. I was pleased when I finally settled on the culprit.

This is an excellent addition to the series and I highly recommend it.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I had not read any books by this author before. I will definitely be checking out the previous books in this series!

This was a fun read! I hate to say this but my favorite characters were Sawdust and Cleo. They were hilarious and brought a new perspective to the story. The chapters "written" by Sawdust were inventive and it was interesting to get a cat's point of view!

The story itself was slightly different from other cozies I've read. First of all, it took place in Nashville. I have never been there but it sounds like a great city. Whitney and Collin's relationship was interesting and something I'd like to know more about. The other characters really helped bring the story to life!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review this book!

Murder With a View is the 3rd instalment in the House Flipper Mysteries series by Diane Kelly. This is first book I have read in the series, and it can be read as a standalone. I have since purchased the previous ones so I can be all caught up in time for book 4 when they flip an abandoned church.

I liked Whitney and her cat Sawdust, it would give you both their thoughts from chapter to chapter which was kind of neat. I also enjoyed the setting of Nashville, Tennessee. Being avid watcher of house flipping shows I rather enjoyed it being the theme of this series.

The mystery is interesting and had lots of twists which kept me guessing. I had no idea who the killer was till Whitney did.

I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from St.Martin Press and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A good mix of mystery, humor and relationships all topped off with a dose of Nashville flavor. Finding two people in the motel that cousins Whitney and Buck were going to flip turned out to be a good news, bad news situation. It also could be the thing that ruins their business.

The comfortable relationship between the protagonist and her detective boyfriend was a nice change and Sawdust the cat is a fun addition to the story. Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.

Whitney is a great character. She knows what she is talking about with Nashville real estate. I love the idea of turning an old motel into condos. There are plenty of clues and red herrings. I really like the way the final clue is uncovered. The reason for the murder seems realistic. The relationships in the book are fun and interesting . They don’t take up too much of the book and they help to keep you interested in these characters.

Another great mystery in the House Flipper series. Whitney and cousin Buck have decided to flip a run down Nashville area motel into mid century condos. But, before they can even get started, an up and coming country music star is found murdered in one of the abandoned rooms. I really enjoy reading this series. I learn something new about the Nashville area with each one. This time, there is a lot of fun information about the music industry. I've read all of the books so far (out of order) and am eagerly waiting for the next one!

This is the third book in the House Flipper series. Whitney and Buck are remodeling an old motel. There is a squatter in the hotel that they let stay. A dead body turns up in the motel shortly after. This is such a fun series. I love Whitney as a character. Also, that her cat, Sawdust, gets his own chapters and we get his point of view. This is such a good series that I will be continuing.

Whitney and her cousin/business partner, Buck, are hoping to "flip" a mid-century motel into trendy condos however, what they discover is a murdered up and coming country western star and a killer who has them in their sights!

I'm a fan of Diane Kelly's books and I am partial to the House Flipper Mysteries. The mystery drew me in from the first page and kept me guessing "whodunit". I enjoyed the Nashville setting and the descriptions of the neighborhoods and entertainment districts. The character of Whitney is down to earth and likable. I enjoyed the camaraderie between the cousins and of course, Sawdust the feline "helper" is adorable!

I can't wait for the next "flip"!

But just who silenced the singer and why? (Amazon)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Whitney and Buck are hard workers and they are good at their jobs. When a country music star is killed at the construction site of their newest flip, Whitney feels she must solve the case before their remodel is derailed. She will need the help from her boyfriend, Detective Collin Flynn, to help her solve the case.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and it pulled me into the story from the very beginning. The mystery was well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider. I did not figure out who did it until it was revealed at the end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Grab a copy of this book and enjoy.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

3.5 strong stars rounded up.

I really, really like this series. I would soooo listen to more if there were more. 😄

Sawdust sure has a knack for finding dead bodies. (Ouch.) But he also has a knack for saving the day, so... Good kitty!

Whitney is a really nice main character. Independent and strong, but also greatly (in a good way) dependent on her great gang of friends and family. I enjoy this part of the story the most. The dynamic between the characters and how they interact. It's really cosy and feel-good.

As a cat-person (duuuuh!) I also greatly enjoy every time a cat-person joke is made. I feel like this is a 100% bull's eye straight to my heart and something that obviously makes me part of the target audience. Well done! 😂

So far, this series doesn't feel formulistic, which is a really, really good thing. Sure, Whitney and Buck (and Sawdust) finds a dead body in all three books, but it feels like the story evolves around the format instead of settling into a stale, type A stereotype. And that's very good, if you ask me.

Really looking forward to more books in this series!

Whitney Whitaker and her cousin Buck have taken on a new and different remodeling project.
The Music City Motor Court. It is an old hotel out of the 50's and 60's that is a complete remodel job and is currently in terrible shape.
They discover a squatter living in one room and a dead body in another.
The victim was a big star who had just broken out in the music scene in a big way.
A murder on the property isn't the best way to showcase a remodeled property. So Whitney wants to get the investigation over with as quickly as possible to get the case solved. Then they can move forward to getting the remodel done.
LOts of great characters and a fun remodel project!

Murder With a View is the third installment in Diane Kelly’s Nashville-set House-Flipper Mystery series. But this time Whitney and her cousin Buck are getting ready to transform an abandoned twelve-unit motel into a luxurious six-unit condominium. When they walk through the complex, they find a genial squatter in Unit 9—and Whitney’s cat, Sawdust, finds a corpse in the bed in Unit 10. As if that wasn’t trouble enough, the corpse is quickly identified as Beckett Morgan, a rising and popular country music star. If Whitney and her beau, Detective Collin Flynn, don’t solve the case quickly, the property could turn into a memorial for Morgan rather than a money-making property for Whitney and Buck.

As Whitney investigates, she discovers that Beckett Morgan was a more complicated person than she had imagined. And then there’s Jimmy, the squatter: is he truly the cheerful nomad (and willing helper) he claims to be, or did he have something to do with Morgan’s death? And who is the man with the bird’s foot belt buckle?

As much as I liked the first two books in the series (Dead as a Door-Knocker and Dead in the Doorway), in my opinion this is the best yet. Nashville is an interesting and unusual setting, and house (or motel) flipping is fascinating. I’ll be looking forward to Whitney, Buck, and Sawdust’s next adventure.

Review:

Murder with a View is the third book in the House-Flipper Mystery series by Diane Kelly. This is also the first book in this series and by this author that I have read. As one would expect, I had a bit of trepidation beginning at book three in a series. I was pleasantly surprised when I quickly began to feel like the major characters in this series were old friends and thus really enjoyed the adventure of this cozy mystery.

Whitney and her cousin Buck (along with the help of Presley Pearson) outbid Thaddeus Gentry III in getting the Music City Motor Court Motel at a tax sale. With ideas abounding to transform the property into luxury condominiums, Whitney and Buck go to the new property to begin their renovations. Low and behold but what (or should I say who) do they find “squatting” in one of the rooms? Jimmy (navy veteran) is just passing through Nashville and saw this abandoned motel and decided to crash there for a few days. Whitney and Buck hire Jimmy to help with the transformation of the property. I may have forgotten to say, Whitney usually brings her cat “Sawdust” to work with her. During the course of clearing out the motel rooms, Sawdust discovers a body. Yikes – that could really drop the property value! It turns out that the deceased is Beckett Morgan, an up-and-coming country-western singing sensation who’s taken Nashville by storm with his number-one hit “Party in the Pasture.”

As the reader can quickly surmise, it is in the best interest of this new real estate adventure to quickly find out who perpetrated this heinous crime so that the groupies will leave the property? Whitney is in a relationship with Detective Collin Flynn so it does seem that she has an inside track on some information not known to the general public.

I really enjoyed the journey that Whitney took this reader on to unravel the layers of Beckett Morgan’s life and murder. It was just convoluted enough so that I was kept guessing throughout the tale.

Each chapter is from the perspective of Sawdust or Whitney – which I found interesting and added a bit of a smile to my face, being a cat lover and all. I especially loved chapter 3 where Sawdust is mentoring Cleo (a kitten brought home by Whitney’s roommate Emmalee) – showing her the ropes so to speak. His “purr-spective” added some fun!

During the process – Whitney and Collin went to a concert given by Lacy (an ex of Beckett’s). I loved the fact that they got into the musical experience. Whitney buys herself a concert t-shirt on the way out. “You know, so I could prove how cool I was to the kids in homeroom.” I loved that! Produced a hearty chuckle from me, which further endeared this book and the writing of Diane Kelly to me.

Favourite quote: Who needs an alarm clock when you’ve got a cat to tell you when it’s time to wake up!

Without a doubt, my exposure to Diane Kelly’s writing via Murder with a View will drive me to seek out other titles by Ms. Kelly.

If you like an engaging cozy mystery with entertaining characters (cats as well as the humans) and a plot which keeps you guessing until the end – then I highly suggest reading Murder with a View!

Rushing out now to get the previous books in the series before book 4. 🙂

Murder with a View by Diane Kelly is the 3rd A House-Flipper Mystery. This engaging cozy mystery can be read on its own for those who are new to the series. Diane Kelly writes entertaining cozy mysteries. I thought the book was well-written with developed characters and steady pacing. I just love the chapters from Sawdust’s point-of-view. His methods for getting Whitney’s attention are hilarious. It is adorable that Cleo, the kitten, is Sawdust’s best friend. They are so cute together. There is humor scattered throughout the story that will have you chuckling. I was especially entertained with the lyrics to “Party in the Pasture”. The author captured Nashville with her word imagery, especially the downtown area. The mystery had several suspects who could have killed singer, Beckett Morgan. It was amusing that Sawdust found the body (again). I like that Detective Collin Flynn works with Whitney instead of telling her to stay out of the investigation. He listens to her when she has theories and when she provides helpful intel. The case may have taken a few weeks for our sleuths to solve, but the pacing was consistent. One clue was all that was needed for me to solve this whodunit. I wish it had been more of a challenge to solve. I enjoyed the dramatic and action-packed reveal. It was great that Sawdust got in on the action. I liked Navy veteran, Jimmy Weber. He is quite a character and was lively addition. Collette and Buck are interested in each other romantically, but neither one of them has made a move. I think they are perfect for each other. Collette also has a new venture with help from Buck and Whitney. I believe it will be a rousing success. I enjoyed the renovation of the motel. It was clever to make them over into condos while keeping the 1960s vibe and colors. I hope the author continues to have Whitney and Buck do unique renovations. I am eager for Buck and Whitney’s next project (and story). Murder with a View is a fun cozy mystery with kitschy colors, reno realities, a surprising squatter, a clever cat, and a snappy song.

Murder With a View is the third installment in the House-Flipper Mystery series set in Nashville, Tennessee and featuring house flipper, Whitney Whitaker and her cat Sawdust. Whitney and her cousin Buck have purchased a 1960's abandoned twelve room motel with the intent to flip the building into a six unit condominium complex.

The renovation starts off with a bang when they discover a squatter on the property, Jimmy Weber. Jimmy is a military vet and is taking some time to ride his motorcycle across the country. He agrees to stay and help with the renovations in exchange for free room and board at the motel. The next day while exploring the rooms, Sawdust discovers the body of Beckett Morgan, an up and coming country music star.

With her boyfriend, Detective Collin Flynn eyeing Jimmy as a suspect, Whitney sets out to track down the real killer. There are plenty of suspects including Beckett's background musicians, his manager, a record label executive and a mysterious woman.

A great afternoon read with a well crafted plot and the return of series regulars. It's nice to spend time rehabbing with Whitney and Buck and following along as the characters personal lives continue to develop and evolve with each new addition to the series.

I received an advanced copy of Murder With a View from NetGalley via St. Martin's Press. While not required to write a review I am happy to offer my honest opinion.

I think this might have been the best book in the series so far. What made it even better for me might be that I read it right after I read the second book, so things were super fresh in my mind. I loved the idea of them renovating an old motel into a building of condo units with really cool retro colors. The best thing was that Whitney and Buck were having such success at this, they were a little more equipped for a loan with a good but unlikely partner.

I wasn't sure what to make of Jimmy at first. Since he was a veteran, I definitely wanted to think the best of him. He turned out to be a great friend, and I do hope he comes back to visit sometime. It was cute to see Buck and Colette together kind of dancing around the dating thing. Whitney and Collin were much closer which was great. I had a feeling I knew whodunit, but then I got lost in a red herring and wasn't sure. It was really an exciting showdown though! I love how all the books have had a complete explanation at the end which wraps up the renovation as well as the case.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

This is the third book in the cozy series "House Flipper Mystery Series" . I have read the previous in series and enjoy returning to this series. Thank you to the author, the publisher and to Net Galley. My review opinions are my own.

Whitney and her cousin are working on a huge project turning a old roadside motel into condos. Their business is flipping properties. Whitney has a adorable cat Sawdust that is a big part of this series and charming . When they find a body on the property the work has to halt . Whitney decides to save her project she must find the killer as she is a savvy sleuth with a talent for solving murders. With her trusty Sawdust by her side clues abound and red herrings as she discovers secrets behind the victim and the murder.

This was a fun read with great charcters. I love that Whitney is portrayed as independent and smart often solving crimes on her own as well as being successful in her business. I love this charming series and look forward to the next in series.

4.5⭐️ I’m ashamed to say it took me way too long to get to this wonderful series on my tbr; but I picked it up at just the right time since the story starts out in May. I’ll have to go back and read the first two in the series. I’ve tried Kelly’s Mountain Lodge series and really enjoyed it, this book was no exception. The author’s writing is fast paced and humorous which kept me turning the pages. The murder happened early on, the sleuthing was excellent, and the mystery kept me guessing and second guessing myself. The chapter titles added a fun touch and a little mystery at the beginning of each. Sawdust’s (the cat) pov contributed a cute touch that I recognized from the other series I’ve read. I look forward to reading more of this series. Diane Kelly is, to me, an essential cozy author. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review, and all thoughts are my own. I hope you’ll add this one to your tbr!

Cousins Whitney and Buck are renovating an old mid-century motel into high-end one-bedroom condos near Nashville in Murder with a View. They hire a squatter named Jimmy that they find living there to help. The next day another squatter is found in an adjoining room. Only this one is dead—and dead famous. It’s Beckett Morgan who is a Country singer with a mega-hit record. Why is he in the rundown motel and who killed him? The cousins and Jimmy rush to find out before their sales expectations fall any further.

Murder with a View is a quick and easy cozy mystery. The people in the cousins’ life are filled with down-home Southern charm. Whitney’s relationship with Detective Collin is blossoming. Life is good for everyone but Beckett and his murderer. 4 stars!

Thanks to St. Martin’s Paperbacks and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Thanks to the publisher, via Netgalley, for an advance e-galley for honest review.

While it's the third book, I felt that the series really hit its stride with this one. Nashville really became a character here, and the setting really sang (ha, pun not intended). My favorite parts of cozies are getting to really know a community and the characters over a series, and this delivered that really well. It seemed to me that the chapters from the cat's perspective were minimal (I'd be fine with this element being completely phased out), which I appreciated. The mystery was good (I definitely mentally substituted a real country singer for the one here), and I loved the motel that Whitney and Buck were rehabbing. All in all, very solid, and I'm committed now to continuing this series.

This is an entertaining book that fans of the genre will enjoy. The who-done-it murder kept me guessing until the end. I enjoyed the budding relationship between Whitney and Collin and am looking forward to more of them in future books. I also enjoyed the descriptions of Nashville - especially the bridge as crossing that bridge has kicked my butt more than one, lol.

To me, the book seemed to lag and move slowly in its middle third. If I wasn't such a fan of the author, I might have been tempted to put it down. For that reason, I'm giving this one 3.5 stars, but am rounding up to four stars. The author is on my must read authors' list.

If you geek cats and house flipping, you'll adore this cozy set in Nashville. The publisher's blurb is pretty good, but the quality of the story is much better. While there is a hint of romance, it certainly is not blatant enough to take anything away from the mystery but serves as a plot device to enhance the deduction process. The cat seems to specialize in finding dead bodies and the detective is a good guy. A good cozy full of twists and red herrings.
I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley. Thanks!
