DiL has the cookbook, one son is a bartender and … “Welcome to Düngeonmeister, a book where fantasy role-playing meets cocktail craft. ” couldn’t be anything but fun (and enlightening). Aldrich and Taylor are funny, and most of these 75 concoctions will likely be sampled someday because the bartender son has already made three of them.
More than a few “Hah!s” …
“vodka’s claim to fame is a lack of flavor, meaning it can add a kick without adding a note. […] Sloe gin, however, is flavored by a sour little blue fruit known as a blackthorn, which changes its flavor profile from other gin immensely, and also makes it the alcohol with the best flavor profile to steal for character names. ”
“Complex Syrup This exceptionally difficult to manufacture fluid is also famously challenging to imbibe and digest. No recipes in this book call for it, and we’ve never seen it required elsewhere. However, the existence of simple syrup suggests that it must exist, and it is therefore included for the sake of completion, as most nerd things are.” Hah!
“This concoction is rumored to ease your passage from even the most harrowing hangover. If you don’t have any Coors Light on hand, congratulations! Give yourself 250 XP for not being burdened with cheap American lager. Now just substitute a tasty amber Mexican beer like a Dos Equis Ambar or a Modelo Negra.”
Hah! And then…nope. Still not beer :)
“Mages who favor the use of blue mana are famous (or perhaps infamous) for their reliance upon countermagic. It is said that you can always tell when two great blue wizards are dueling by the lack of anything happening.”
Cool little book. As far as presentation goes, the binding looks awesome, though it's too small to be confused with a D&D rules manual. The illustrations inside and the tables at the end are also designed to look like those in the manuals, which was a cool touch. The paper inside is a bit too rough and thin, and not at all like the glossy thick paper normally used in game manuals and cookbooks, so it ends up looking kind of low quality in comparison, but I guess it's a minor quibble.
The contents themselves are mostly the usual mixed drinks you'd expect, with some twists or funny names referencing the game, like the Aasimartini or the Tiefling's Breakfast (a variant of the Bloody Mary), and I dug that each recipe includes a difficulty rating for easy reference. Not one of my best thematic recipe books, but I like it.
I loved this one! All the drink combos and the great names they came up for them.... "Mermaid Lagoon" and "Release the Kraken" and "Seduction Rolls" and many more. I think just about and D&D Dungeon Master would love to have this just for reference to add in to the game! Come on... all our adventurers end up it a bar or tavern at some point, don't they??
Go get this one my DM friends... you won't regret it.
A wonderful idea. Love the writing and the jokes and all the little references. Not my kind of cocktails though. I tried a few that were outside of my usual favorites and I... Just not for me. If you and your DND party are into sweet rum and vodka drinks I think there is a lot in here for you. The ones I was most drawn to were classic cocktails with funny names.
This book is full of awesome D&D-themed cocktails. The recipes are diverse, and the commentary is hilarious and witty. I am excited to share these recipes and cocktails with my fellow campaign members!
These recipes and the associated notes and tips were amusing. Most seem pretty easily doable, but if you’re adventurous there are many more complicated recipes to try.
