The two things most unkind to lovers; distance and war. Belle Henley is fully integrated into upper-class, Moncton society. However, she is becoming tired of its expectations. She moves to her aunt’s house in Prince Edward Island for a change of scenery, and soon falls in love with the progressive and successful James Blackwell. Belle also makes an unlikely friend named Cole, from the poor fishing community down the road. When Canada joins World War One, James proposes to Belle, who accepts. However, Belle seems to find her heart pulling her in a different, unacceptable direction; the fisherman who is fighting overseas.
