Born in California. Raised in New York. Went to law school, now write full time. Love: long walks, fresh notebooks, the smell of brownies, pomegranate seeds. Don't love: yogurt, spam (the email kind, and the food kind), deep water, deserted city streets.
Newest book: THE SECRETS OF LOVELACE ACADEMY, co-written with Marie Benedict, available on April 22, 2025.
I love to hear from readers! Email me! Ask a question! I promise to reply.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is a fantastic modern read for today's generation of under 9s. All kids today love slime so the use of a pet slime character in this book is fantastic! I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens next in this new slimetastic series!
This is a quality entry into a quality series for the under-nine girls out there. It's so good it almost negates the need to read the first book in the series, which I did enjoy but almost acts as a trailer for the high drama we get here. Our heroine has managed to produce a living slime pet, with the help of regular slime and some space dust that her gran presented her with. But we start with the problem that overnight someone has made the gran disappear – and they want the space dust back… We get a much more succinct recap of how Cosmo the Slime Pet was created than we ever saw in Book One – which to repeat I didn't regret reading at the time – and then crack on with a pell-mell adventure, finding out more and more about Cosmo and so much more at the same time. This is top-notch stuff, giving relatively relatable sci-fi adventures for such a young, predominantly female audience. Kudos to all involved, and roll on the sequel! Four and a half stars.
This is the second entry in the series about Cosmo. These books are for readers who are starting to enjoy chapter books. The first book ended with the cliffhanger of a missing grandmother. This book picks up where that one left off.
The premise of the series is that our allergic protagonist has created her own pet from Slime with the help of a little moon dust. Cosmo only comes to life for her and her good friend. Cosmo is an important part of their adventures.
What did happen to Grandma Sadie? What will Piper and Cosmo do to find her? Will they succeed?
Along with the story line, the author includes some facts as, for example, information about the constellations or Keith Haring. These brief sections are not heavy handed but may encourage readers to learn more.
This is a fun book with some bright, colorful illustrations that enhance the text. I think that young readers will enjoy it. As a bonus there is a slime recipe at the end.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.
This one is a 2.5 for me. I'm not necessarily loving the idea of a slime concoction that comes to life with the help of some space dust, but its intended young audience will probably love the idea and cross their fingers that the same thing could happen to their slime. In this, the second installment in the series, Piper realizes that Cosmo, her pet slime, has even more abilities than she realized. When Piper receives some threatening messages, she and her friend Claire follow some clues to Magna Labs where Claire's uncle Ricky works. Fans of the series, which contains several colorful illustrations, will get a kick out of how fast the two girls can travel with some help from Cosmo, and will be eager to find out what's going on with Piper's grandmother. The plot is a bit over the top since I can't imagine two girls getting away with all they do without someone stopping them, but it's all in good fun and serves as entertainment.
Piper and her parents are growing worried because her grandmother has disappeared. Then Piper gets an email from a person named MaLa saying if she hands over the space dust, she can get her Grandma back. But the space dust is now in Piper's slime pet Cosmo who is alive. Her friend Claire thinks she might know where MaLa and Grandma are. But can they rescue Grandma on their own?
Argh! This ends in a terrible cliffhanger. I don't know how to rate this book because a lot of my rating will depend on whether Piper learns to not communicate with strangers over email and keep it a secret from adults, or go off to strange places with only another young friend by herself! Piper's heart is in the right place, but she is in a lot of danger. So for now this is a 3, but that depends on how book 3 turns out. It is a pretty exciting read for a lower grade book.
We are so proud of you for reading "Cosmo to the Rescue" by Courtney Sheinmel! You discovered that bravery goes a long way, and that doing nice things for others is worthwhile. Cosmo who always lent a hand when someone needed help? Take this concept and turn it into a practical idea to use in your life: Be the person who will always help and be slaughtered in times of crisis. Your courage and kindness will give rise to courage and kindness in others around you. Love, Mom and Dad
I'll admit, this wasn't quite as amazing as the first one. It's also a sequel you'll want to read pretty quickly after finishing book one because I think that's what really threw me off about the story. I guess the email thing just seemed ridiculous to me. Ultimately, I still adore this series, but I definitely prefer the first book.
