It’s hard to go home when your father wants to kill you. Syrian-born CIA operative and retired Army Major Sonia Amon is a battlefield surgeon at Walter Reed Hospital. She also teaches military strategy at the Army War College which provides her cover as a CIA operative for the Middle East. Sonia is recalled to Syria to rebuild a series of primary care health clinics to offer basic care in war-ravaged Syria. But there is one problem. Her father is a terrorist who wants to kill her. He has hunted her for many years. Sonia is as terrified of her father now as when she was a child. At eighteen, she escaped the terrorism of her father and fled to the United State into her mother’s loving arms. After med-school, a career in the army as a doctor and professor, she wants to help the country she left behind and dearly loves. She also longs to see her fiancé, Colonel Paul Grayson who commands an Army Garrison near Aleppo. Can a terrorist’s daughter mend the wounds her father left on their people? With a command of the language, an understanding of the terrain, and her medical skills, Sonia is the perfect operative. The U.S. military and World Health Organization want to rebuild a hospital destroyed by ISIS, but Aleppo is a dangerous place. There are eyes on her everywhere. She knows she’s being watched. Is this mission too much? The CIA doesn’t think so and duty calls. And Sonia always heeds that call.

Dr. Judith Lucci is an Amazon bestselling author who writes what she knows. She is the author of the Alex Destephano Medical Thriller Series and the soon to be released Michaela McPherson, Private Eye, a series centered on a retired homicide detective from Richmond, Virginia who really can’t retire.
“Before I wrote fiction, I was an academic writer who published research, theoretical works, text books and just about anything a nurse or college professor needed to publish to survive. The differences in academic writing and writing fiction are dramatic. Writing what I know propels me to pull from my clinical experiences, some good, some not and use popular fiction as a means to teach and advocate for others. My books have three purposes, to engage the reader, to entertain them and to educate about healthcare and perhaps, the darker side of hospital life.
I am a nurse and hold graduate and doctoral degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia. I have always been a reader and a writer and I love it. I am a member of the Virginia Writers Club, The Shenandoah Valley Writers and Sisters in Crime.
When I’m not writing I am probably teaching, paining on silk as I am a multi-media artist or playing with my many dogs. Please feel free to contact me at judithlucciwrites@gmail.com. I am excited about meeting you!
this was a really great book! lots of action. she is just retired and decides to go back to her home country to open some clinics. only now this has put her in grave danger. read to find out what happens.
First book of this series but it gives a back story to some of the Alex Destephano books. Dr. Sonia Amon is the daughter of a major terrorist in Syria who has never forgiven her mother and herself for leaving him. Sonia is on a mission of mercy to build badly needed medical clinics for the citizens of Syria with the help of the US Army stationed there, her fiancee Colonel Paul Grayson being one of them. The action and suspense is ongoing throughout the book and right up until the end you can't put the book down.
Shatter Proof is the first book in Judith Lucci’s Sonia Amon, MD Medical Thriller series. Ms. Lucci is very talented in creating suspense and tension with her written words, and her descriptive writing makes the reader feel they are participating in the action as events unfold. The likable characters are well developed. I was drawn in from the first page of this fast-paced page-turner, and my attention never wavered. I’m already anxiously awaiting the next book in this series. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading books in the medical/thriller genre.
Major Sonia Amon recently retired from active duty. Now, she’s a staff physician at Walter Reed Army hospital and teaching at the Army War College in Bethesda, Maryland. She’s engaged to Colonel Paul Grayson, who commands an Army garrison outside of Aleppo, enjoys spending time with her mother, Melody, and Tessa, her retired war dog. Sonia has ties to the CIA and is part of a World Health Organization committee that has enlisted her help in rebuilding clinics and trying to prevent an outbreak of infectious diseases in Syria. Sonia’s a valuable asset to the U.S. because not only does she have a medical background, but also because she was raised in Syria, speaks most Farsi dialects, and knows the area well. She’s grateful that Jeff Hansen, her long-time CIA handler and protector, is making the trip with her. Sonia’s looking forward to returning to Syria because she’ll be able to see Paul, but fears being back in the area where her father, Faisal Muhammed, lives. Sonia and her American mother escaped the monster who fathered her when she was three years old, but a couple of years later, he found them and had Sonia kidnapped and returned to Syria where she lived until she escaped when she turned eighteen. Faisal, now second in command of ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, is a cruel and vicious terrorist who vowed revenge upon both Melody and Sonia for rejecting him. Conditions in Syria are worse than Sonia imagined and her fears about her father are more than justified.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Great Writing! I enjoyed the second book so much and realized it was the second book in this series so I purchased this book and am glad I did. Now on to book three!
This is a page turner--be prepared to not want to stop reading it until the very end--but there is a heck of a cliff hanger and I went ahead and ordered the second in this series--it was that good!
Sonia witnessed her Mom get beat mercilessly by her Syrian father who was --well a terrorist! They escaped and made it to America--Sonia was recaptured and was raised in her father's house. She knew she would escape when she turned 18-and she did. She is now an MD and was a major in the US Army. She hates her father but loves the country where she was born and really wants to help the civilians caught in the middle.
She is asked to go to Syria to help construct medical facilities--which she does. Her father has never stopped trying to get her back and somehow finds out that she is back there.
You will read about some of the things that the people endured---horrendous.
They build a medical facility and then Sonia is somehow abducted by her father--her Mom had been abducted from the US at the same time.
Your heart will go out to the civilians who have to endure hardships and fear every day of their lives.
I don't want to say any more or I might give away the whole plot! But this book is definitely for those who like horror and terror-with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. You will feel like you are right there with Sonia as she lives through this nightmare.
This is a story you could see on the news tomorrow. Sonia Amon is a retired army major and a doctor. She is an expert on Syria, knows the area and speaks most of the dialects. She helped the CIA on covert missions and she still is. She and her mother are terrified of her father. He is Syrian and he became a jihadi terrorist and is now second in command of ISIS. They know what a monster her father is. He vows to kill them both. She is back in Syria to set up medical clinics. Will she be successful? Will her father find out she is there? Judith's writing will enable you to visualize what is happening. You will experience it as though you were there. This story grabbed me and though I've finished reading it, it hasn't let me go yet. A great start to a new series. I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the author and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.
Nonstop terror especially when you realize it could be true. Sonia Amon recently retired from the Army and is a staff physician at Walter Reed hospital. She is also an expert in the Middle East, especially Syria, because her father became a jihadi terrorist. Sonia and her mother escaped from his cruelty many years ago, but are always in fear that his long reaching reign of terror will reach them again. Worried that Syria has become a breeding ground for all kinds of illnesses and possible epidemics, Sonia is returning to Syria to reopen a medical clinic. She is is well aware of the danger that could await her, but even she could not imagine how much. I received and ARC of this book from the author and though it was heart pounding at times, it was well written and I look forward to reading the next book in this new series. The above comments and review are my honest opinion.
I read this out of the Do No Harm collection. It's an excellent medical thriller set in DC and Syria. Dr Sonia Amon is retired after 20 yrs in the Army. She plans to marry a Colonel in the Army after he retires in 4 months and returns from Syria.
After being home around 6 months, she plans to defy her radical ISIS father and return to Syria to set up medical facilities that have been destroyed in war. She had worked undercover as an asset in the CIA due to being 1/2 Syrian and fluent in the language and dialects. Can she complete her mission? Will Faisal know she has returned? Can her fiance' keep her safe? Her mother is safe in DC, right?
Several weeks later, she is recuperating in DC. This book ends with a text regarding the Colonel and she's off to Germany to Ramstein AFB to meet him.
I received this book through ARC in exchange of an honest review. Not having read any of the prior books of this series didn't hinder the story. Sonia Amon has overcome so much, becoming a doctor, after the horrors of her past. A timely read of the war of Isis, fictional , but gives you a close up and personal view. Well written, twisted, loveable and hateful characters, a realistic storyline all typical of Judith Lucci. If you love medical thrillers, war stories, and family love, this book will keep you entertained on the edge of your seat. Love, love loved it!
A story that takes place mainly in Syria but also in the United States that leads you down a path of twists and turns involving brutality, hatred, love, dreams, and hope. Loved the strong woman character, Sonia, her handler, jeff, and her soulmate, Paul -- very well developed and multi-dimensional characters. This one will definitely take you on an emotional ride. The only part I didn't care for was the cliffhanger at the end.
A gripping start to a new series! I couldn't put this book down until I finished it. Dr Sonia Amon is retired from the army, but still does covert missions. A roller coaster of emotions will have you flipping the pages. Start to finish I was pulled into the story and holding my breath in places. I can't wait for the next book in the series to see what happens with Sonia and Paul.
A well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start. Tragic that Sonia and her mother Melody live through but learn to be stronger because of it. Military life is hard being away from family and friends but a life some people make career choices to stay in. I just couldn't put this story down and cannot wait for the next one to read.
Sonia Amon, M.D. is retired from active duty. Her father is Faisal, an militant leader of an extremist group that kill and experiment on women and children. Faisal wants to kill his wife and daughter. Sonia is sent to Syria to set up a medical clinic. She is back in the country where her father is. This is a thriller that will keep you reading.
Dr Amon was a major and a Doctor in the military that career is behind her. With her knowledge of Syria she wants to help set up clinic there, and speaking most of the languages. Her father is a jihadi and a terrorist, vowing to kill her, and her mother. If he finds out how close they are. A new series, and a good start with a good female lead.
Judith Lucci’s Shatter Proof is the story of Dr. Sonia Amon, retired army Major who goes to Syria to set up vaccination clinics, but ends up captured by her jihadist father. The story is good, though it could have used better editing to prevent some redundancy. Still, the premise is engaging and worth the short read.
What a suspenseful thriller. Retired Sonia returns to Syria to open medical clinics. She definitely didn’t expect these problems. I couldn’t read fast enough to get to the end to find out how she does. Ready for more.
This book was brilliant! A beautiful combination of a love story blended with the story of the horrors of the Middle East. Add to that the family dynamics of the heroine, Sonia. An enthralling book that I couldn't put down! Can't wait to read more of this series!
This is a medical thriller filled with plenty of suspense, twists and turns. I loved the storyline and the awesome characters. This book is recommended for those who love medical thrillers.
I wish I could have gotten past the editorial errors and gotten into the storyline as so many great reviews I was really looking forward to this read. I will try again when the next book in the series comes out.
another great Judith Lucci book. Fast paced story. good characters and setting. I had to stay up late to finish the book in one sitting, I find myself loving all this authors books.
The story line was a good one, has a lot of potential. Personally I thought the protagonist too weepy, clingy to be a strong woman in command of her life and in the profession she is in. One minute she was smiling and kissing male friends on the cheek….something you would never find in a war zone, the next she was going off on a mission into hostile territory….again with a strong male. Her handler “protected” her, something you would nit likely find in the CIA, then she was weepy a lot of time, nothing wrong with that, but strong women in my view are generally get over it an get on with it types with little time for tears. She just wasn’t my idea of a strong, professional woman, a retired army officer ( here, let me give you my handkerchief major”, a CIA agent, a physician, she detracted from the story I think. I’ll try the next adventure and hope it gets better.
Sonia Amon is an Army Veteran, born in Syria of an American mother and Syrian father. She has also worked for the CIA as an undercover agent in the middle east because of her languages and appearance. She escaped from her father when he became violent with her mother and he has vowed to get her back and he is now heading ISIS and is responsible for some deadly attacks on military and Syrian civilians. Sonia has gone back to Syria to set up clinics for the civilian population the have been destroyed by ISIS attacks. Her fiance is the officer in charge of the American army outpost from which she will be working and it comes under attack while she is there. I will stop here and liet the reader discover what happens next. Not a bad tale with more to come. Do wish authors and editors learned the use of lay/laid (just my pet peeve because it is so often misused.)
I love medical thrillers and that is how this book was advertised. It is NOT a medical thriller and the book was so poorly written that I only finished it so I could review it. We are to believe that the main character is a 20 year newly retired army doctor, however, she talks and acts like she has NO IDEA about how the military works nor the Middle East... The dialogue is just so awkward and so unnatural. This is NOT how people speak in real life. Also, there is so much repetitive phraseology. She is supposed to be intelligent and yet makes one horrible stupid decision after another. I cannot stand when an author writes a character that is supposed to be brave, strong, intelligent but yet the story and dialogue portray them as moronic and cowardly. I am astounded that this book got so many good reviews.
I'm not sure why this is considered a K9 companion adventure ad the dog, Tessa' only actions were to look sad and gulp a tuna fish sandwich. The main character, a retired military officer, who is bull-headed repeatedly talks about her hatred of her father, the second in command of ISIS and the love of her life, a military man with 4 months left before retirement. There was a lot of action and interesting info about ISIS. It was hard to reconcile the stupidity of Dr. Sonia Amon the main character ot that of her handler which caused needless suffering.
That's the only word I can think of to say about this outstanding book! How terrible to hate your father and know he wants to kill you and your mother! He is a monster! A leader, the 2nd in command, of ISIS in Syria. And now she is back in Syria. She only wants to help the people of a war-torn Syria, her birth land, where she lived until she escaped at age 18. And spend time with the man she is to marry in a few months. But her father wants to kill her and her mother. Will she survive? Will Paul, the luv of her life? To find the answers to these questions and more, read this outstanding book. Highly, highly recommended.
This book is full of vivid descriptions of the devastating loss in Syria. Cities in rubble, people struggling to survive: Sonia is in Syria to set up health clinics in Aleppo. While she is working on one of the sites, she is kidnapped by the Emir’s men. The Emir is her father, determined to make her pay for escaping to the United States when she was 18. She is beaten and held in a room at the emir’s compound. She hears noises from a gathering in the courtyard below. When she drags herself over to the window she sees her mother being held by guards as the Emir sentences her to be stoned. What could be worse? Keep reading……..
This is a spellbinding read, that had my heart racing and so real with all that's happened in the middle east, makes this so much more realistic, it frightening. The level of hate a father can actually have toward his own daughter, the US military forces abilities and a mother's love, combined with one woman's strength to endure by renouncing her father's beliefs, and not only becoming an American citizen but a Dr for the US Army! Can't wait to read #2!
Shattered Proof introduces us to Dr. Sonia Amon and a cast of characters you really care about. It is the first in a series and is very good. I personally like CIA/FBI/Assassins type books like Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, Tom Clancy's books. This was good from the very beginning and kept going all the way to the end. I won't share too much so as not to spoil it for others but if you're looking for an author that isn't REALLY popular but can write a good story, this one is for you!
Good start to an interesting saga that I am sure will follow,,as this is far to good to be a only one off, description of procedures , places and characters is plausible and more than a little realistic More tommorow, good writing so far
