“You're nothing but a mask. Your whole life has been a mask. The poor, downtrodden Seer, afraid of all those terrifying vampires—when you could have stalked and killed and eaten any one of them! The defenceless runaway, cowering in the night—only nobody hurt you, did they?” [...]“It's something I have noticed throughout my life: predators tend to sense a greater one, and to steer clear. Tell me, were you jumped a single time, while on those dangerous streets? Were you mugged? Beaten? Something worse? No?”Switching to self-publishing halfway through a series sounds exhausting, if not outright impossible, and its noteworthy that Karen Chance has managed this feat without sacrificing the integrity of her storytelling. Instead of hacking off chunks of content to eke every cent from her inbuilt readership, Chance has taken pains to service the story while also trying not to make her effort a net loss.
So, yeah, the incubus understood power, but he didn't understand that it wasn't enough. I wasn't some kind of robot—plug her in and let her go. Or a Pythian Barbie: watch her defeat gods and fey kings and monsters galore. Now with a new accessory pack, a shiny golden whip!It could be wishful thinking, but there was something definitive about the way the love triangle was handled this time around. While Mircea and Pritkin weren't as active players, Cassie made some interesting points about her relationship with both. Primarily, that Mircea and her don't work. And if that is truly a resolution, then I can accept the magical threesome that it took to get Cassie there. When Lovers Knot was initially brought up, some kind of magical sexcapade between Cassie, Mircea and Pritkin felt inevitable. Within the first nanosecond. That isn't to say that Lovers Knot exists to concoct this scenario—while frustratingly making her bound to Mircea (whose likability is directly proportional to how much leeway Cassie doesn't give him), it does allow Cassie to gleefully share their abilities and knowledge and I'm all for that. The focus on the Fey is still heavy but feels more purposeful than its been in either series for a couple books now, and I'm excited to see where this story goes.
