Cassandra Palmer #11

Ignite the Fire: Incendiary

Rate this book
Cassie Palmer is the Pythia, chief seer of the supernatural world. John Pritkin is a half demon and a legendary war mage. Mircea Basarab is a first-level master vampire and the general of the World Vampire Senate. Each is formidable enough alone. But they recently discovered that, together, they are far more than the sum of their parts. With their power combined through a perilous spell, they are the closest thing left on Earth to one of the ancient gods.

That comes in handy considering that the old gods are exactly what the supernatural community is currently fighting. But now, their triumvirate has been torn apart. Mircea and Pritkin are lost in Faerie, with Mircea pursuing a personal mission five hundred years in the making. Meanwhile Cassie finds herself facing down an ancient adversary on her own. To survive, the three must find a way to come together, even worlds apart, and take their union to a new level.

I can't believe I am giving a Cassandra Palmer book 2 stars. This series has always evoked strong emotions in me, in both extremes, from love to frustration. It was definitely one of my favourite series for years, with Pritkin and Cassie being one of my favourite couples (even before they became a couple). The last few books have really lost me, but I always had hope for great things and looking at them objectively, they were always enjoyable reads. Well, I'm so disappointed with Incendiary, as I'm struggling to find a single thing I enjoyed about it. Usually in this situation where I can't find a positive I would give 1 star, but it hurts me to go that far.

I know that Karen Chance writes very chaotic action sequences, but they usually occur only a couple of times in a book, and most of the time I like them. Yes, I'm about 80% sure of what is going on in these scenes, but I always like Cassie. Well, this book is just crazy action sequence after crazy action sequence; they're boring and tedious and most serve little purpose. In between this chaos we have boring exposition with Cassie in her head, be that her thinking process (we had to read every thought she had in this one), or just Cassie being there in spirit form having flashbacks or visions of unknown characters. I didn't even like Cassie in this book, and she is usually a great protagonist. She is just there and watches or comments on the action, or people talk at her. We get none of the great character relationships I usually love, no vampires or coven or Tami, or Pritkin!

Oh how Karen Chance failed Pritkin, and any fan of his. He is in this book for two seconds at the beginning, and once a spirit (ugh, I'll get to that) and then is unconscious throughout the final battle, or whatever you call that. At the end of book 8 I thought "finally!", as they officially became romantically involved. I never got the Meirca thing, and felt no connection between them. It had more of a paternal feel, which just made it creepy. Anyway, Karen Chance doesn't want to commit to that writing choice, and is now completely backtracking and making Meirca a viable choice in a love triangle. In books 9 and 10, it was clear to me that Cassie was over Meirca and happy to make things work with Pritkin, and now suddenly she loves them both and is struggling to let go of Meirca. What?! Then we get the weirdest sex scene in the whole series, with a threesome in ghost/spirit form (like half the book is). Who wanted that? It was made all the worse when you realise Pritkin wasn't really conscious for it and now we have a whole cheating dilemma. This book has totally ruined my love for the series as a whole, and sadly for the Pritkin/Cassie romance.

It's a running joke now that Karen Chance likes to drag out her books. Well she dragged out this story so much she turned it into two long books. She also drags out annoying plot points all the time, driving me crazy. Well, the Lover's Knot spell ran it's course in book 9, and it's still going strong in book 11 and into 12. Meirca really made me hate him with this spell. Previously he told Cassie he removed it, only to lie and recast the spell when he wanted. At the beginning of this book be basically blackmails Cassie to do one last shift through time for him before he agrees to remove it, until he changes his mind and doesn't bother. He never listens to Cassie, making him an awful love interest IMO. Lover's Knot is a terrible plot device anyway, since it removes all of Cassie's vulnerabilities and just makes her invincible woman in every situation. It also adds to the irritating love triangle element.

The storyline in this book was uninteresting and lost all of the charm of previous ones. Less is more and keep it grounded and Cassie works well. The gods mythology is my least favourite paranormal element to this series, closely followed by Fae, and this whole book is all about those two things. I was so bored, I actually skimmed more pages than fully read. That's a terrible sign. I think Karen Chance needs a publisher and editor on her side, and if that means ending the series sooner than we want, I would accept that. I hate that it has come to this, and I am going in to book 12 with very low expectations.

after reading:

1.25/5 and i consider it generous...
I ABSOLUTELY HATE RATING CASSIE BOOK 1 STAR BUT I HAD TO.
1. because when i will reread the series (first 9 books, perhaps 10th as well) i want to remember that i don’t need to continue up to #11 because i have suffered once already
2. because i hated most of it
3. because it makes me want to re-rate #1 book with 5 stars out of 5 <- and #1 was so far the least awesome in the series. here, i can’t even say ‘the worst’ since i love this series so much.

I didn’t mind the long wait at all (it made me sad but not mad. writing books and publishing them by yourself is not sth trivial, although i wish KC pushed the estimated dates of release further. after #12 i guess she will?) even if i ended up not sure if i know which baddie is who at the beginning, but that’s nothing.

At first - or rather as soon as Cassie was out of soul-bond-blah-blah-blah and at Gertie’s (i love Gertie and i love that Cassie has some motherly figure/mentor after all this time ^^) – i felt so happy. My favorite series, long-known and beloved characters. You know that cosy feeling.
But then everything went back to hell - and no, not the one in the verse but the metaphorical one.

I know that it’s actually half of the story when it comes to plot, because #11 and #12 were meant to be one book. I was basically euphoric when i read that KC wrote too much (kinda), like every fan would be. I’ll read everything, I thought. Apparently I was a sweet summer child.

What i liked:
- 2 lines of #established_relationship
- new Pythian power, yay!
- Pritkin’s incubus (yeah, she still pretends there are two of them) talking with Cassie, especially that part when he says that BOTH PRITKIN AND CASSIE WEAR MASKS of mere humans ;)
- that one tiny lil moment of Cassie going BAMF and beating up A’s (i dont even care what his name spells like) ass

Unfortunately, new-prythian-power, that could actually be pretty handy, ended up as a tool to have Cassie stand a silent witness to all the boring, boring, absolutely useless and unimportant drama that doesnt matter to the reader! I mean, i guess i skimmed those parts, so it could also be because of clarvoyance and/or Mircea’s powers

Don’t get me started on fucking Lover’s Knot. I hate it, but i could actually tolerate it

Don’t get me started on Mircea.

KC is known for her action scenes, but this time they made me feel ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. (I kept on wondering, why? Were any of them needed for the plot?) Better that than anger and disappointment, right? Well, I felt those too.
When i think of this book – a book that i’ve picked up ten(?) hours ago – and what happened so far, i barely see any valid plot points.

Oh, and don’t get me started on romance drama that somehow found its way to BOOK FUCKING ELEVEN.

The more i think about #11 the more furious i get. Some part of me wants to cry out of that anger.

Cassie’s 1-9 character development continues to recede since #10 (fingers crossed for #12...)
Pritkin, my precious boy, was an unconsious sack of potatoes through most of the book.
Mircea was there and even my annoyance and deep dislike for him starts to feel distant. Like, who are those people? I don’t recognize them, i don’t care about them.

This book was SO WEIRD that at 93% when Cassie started to kiss i actually expected them to go for it. Let’s make it even more absurd.

Am I gonna read #12? I’ll try – maybe it will somehow make #11 make sense? I doubt that, but maybe #12 will be at least readable. Maybe it will have actual Cassie, Pritkin and even my disliked Mircea, instead of those empty shells (or sacks of potatoes) that stood in for them in #11.

before reading:

22/04/21: have you seen the update at KC's blog?? we'll be getting basically twice as long story. i'm excited, since she's not the kind of writer to waste it on nonsense like some do.

(this way or another, i will still reward myself after exams with some Cassie goodness!)

i shouldn't have read that preview... but then, my favorite spiky hair, my favorite green eyes...

and THEN - "December 2020"

First of all, this was worth the wait! Fans of our hapless Pythia can rejoice in another rollicking ride from Karen Chance. Ignite the Fire: Incendiary is action-packed, as I've come to expect from Cassie's adventures, and full of shifting timelines, flashbacks, and POV switches. It can be quite hectic when you're reading at the speed of light to see what happens next, but once again...TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Karen Chance has stated that this is part one of two (Ignite the Fire: Inferno will be out October 15th!!!), and it does end on a cliffhanger--so be prepared for that. Normally I hate waiting, but I'm so excited for the next installment because it feels like many of the Dory story-lines are starting to converge (I definitely need to re-read both series again) and provide us with some closure. I feel Cassie (and the audience) is on the verge of understanding some major things, and while I missed Pritkin and Mircea's presence often in Incendiary, I think all we learn is vital to build up to Inferno. Also it's just great seeing powerful women kick a**!

Thank you Ms. Chance for another twisty-turny-timey-wimey adventure! I'll be sure to buy Inferno when it comes out (and I'll wait as long as it takes for your fabulous stories, I am in it for the long haul)!

So this book was scheduled to release on Feb 20th, 2021 and that date was kept all the way up until ---Feb 20th, 2021, when it wasn't released and it wasn't listed as having a specific date in 2021. How does this happen? How does a release date get set, then pushed back on the actual date it was set to release? Seriously? You wait until the actual date it was supposed to be released and then decide to not release it? IF it isn't done, then say it isn't done, don't put some arbitrary date that you HOPE the book will be done by and then when that date is actaully HERE and the book isn't done, THEN you change the date? Nope. I prefer not having a specific release date to one that gets pushed time and time again. I should have known that this would happen when Amazon didn't have any pre-orders or listings of any upcoming new books

Ok, So I have the book, now I am trying to decided if I want to read it by itself, or re-read some of the previous books. Seriously, I have all the books, but how far back to read? They take FOREVER to finish.

I have generally enjoyed the Cassandra Palmer novels, would rank most of them 4 or 5 star purely on entertainment value. Books 1-10 were fun, they journeyed through different periods of history and reminded me of a lot of history I had forgotten. This book however was a disappointment. The non-stop action was tiring, I never got a good picture of the time period or the location. The writing felt unprofessional and even Cassie was exasperated by the non-stop action. She healed from each battle but at some point I wanted a little down time, a little time to reflect on what was happening, a chance for me and for the characters to process. It never came. The overwhelming amount of unnecessary italics made it hard to read and added to my lack of enjoyment. There has to be a better way to tell a story like this that doesn't require this kind of formatting. I've noticed that as Ms Chance has gone to self-publishing the writing has slipped, there were lots of typos and many places where a professional editor would have tightened up the prose and refined the story line. Also, I know the book was split for financial reasons, but the split was abrupt and I felt like nothing happened except that Cassie was in a constant battle for her life. Essentially there was no story arc that was discernable and definitely no climax and resolution. Even having to leave it at a cliff hanger because of the split, there needs to be some forward motion. In the end, I finished it, but unlike most of Ms Chance's book - it was put-downable and took me two weeks to finish instead of a single day or two.

JUST ONE MORE MONTH LEFT!!! I'M SO FREAKING EXCITED

Update (26/02/2021)
Still not out but I am hopeful and excited!!!

Update (30/08/2021)
According to he website the release dates were May and June since she decided to put out two books? "split them into Ignite the Fire: Incendiary and Ignite the Fire: Inferno, and put out the whole, properly paced and properly told story"

Update 22/10/2021
WOW WOW WOW, SO MANY THREADS HAVE BEEN CONNECTED (3.5 shining stars)
I reread the whole series again before jumping into this and what can I say, this is definitely a strong addition to the series
my biggest issue is we seem to have taken a step backwards with the whole resolution of infamous never ending love triangle between mircea, cassie and pritkin. SIGH, the whole lover's knot situation not my cup of tea
The over the top action as always is still there. But I think this is just the style. I usually skimmed over them, unless I felt like something critical plot wise was involved and then would reread them.

So sorry to give it this rate 1 star ⭐

It was so chaotic, I skipped so much of the book even then I couldn't bring myself to finish it.

That's a problem I've always had with this series, it so chaotic and dense and damn difficult to enjoy until you find that point where it doesn't matter so much but I couldnt find it in this one.

I've loved Pritkin since the first book so sorry we never get enough of him.

I don't think I'll give it another try, but if I do I'll update my review

Cassie Palmer books have always been my favorite…..until this book. While I like the general story line I do not like how Cassie forgave Mircea so easily. I really really did not like the 3 way between the characters. Please let this be a one off and not a trend. I have seen this happen with other writers and have stopped reading the books as did many of my friends.

I thought I would be pretty used to Cassie time hopping by now, and I am. Only now we have imprint hopping, mind hopping, Common hopping and the whole time I was trying to catch up to where and how we are. It was too much too soon, honestly.

I was very excited when this came to my hands. I was severely disappointed however by the book. I am a Cassie Palmer fan and I am due to a re-read, however this book to me was very confusing. Actually I was as confused as Cassandra has been with all the body hoping and the time hoping etc etc etc. The book picked up for me at around 75%, especially with (maybe?) introduction of Arsen, and how Cassie viewed their society and people, who didn't differentiate that much that Earth people. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the part 2 of the Ignite the Fire, cause Ms. Chance has left us climbing up some kind of flammable thingamajig that was on fire :D

*I am rating this series a 1 star due to the inclusion of a disturbing and graphic sexual assault scene in one of the most recent books. I cannot in good conscience recommend this book or series or author to anyone*

This book gets two stars because the author has developed a serious problem with meandering timelines.

I understand Cassie jumps around a lot, and I know there is a main plot to this story, but there was so much side plot, I forgot the main plot. This is a problem that continues more and more.

The rarity of comic relief and rest also meant I got bored during the action scene and ended up skimming through a lot just to get to something more pertinent than Cassie making it through something by the skin of her teeth.

Don't even get me started on the romance plots. She loves Mircea and Pritkin but considers it cheating to kiss Mircea (even though she did that and worse to Mircea with Pritkin) and then suddenly she thinks nothing of using her borrowed incubus powers to get hot and heavy with a random fae.

Speaking of, the way the far world and the war was being handled was frankly just boring. There's a way to do political intrigue and this wasn't it.

It feels like past time to let Cassie retire and move onto a different heroine. Preferably one who can comprehend the normal life aspect a little more.

There were a lot of blah blah moments where Cassie was droning on and on. I had to skip parts because I couldn’t take it anymore. I did enjoy the story though. The narrator on the other hand was terrible. She sounded like a robot and made listening absolutely torturous, which is why it took me so long to finish it.

“You're nothing but a mask. Your whole life has been a mask. The poor, downtrodden Seer, afraid of all those terrifying vampires—when you could have stalked and killed and eaten any one of them! The defenceless runaway, cowering in the night—only nobody hurt you, did they?” [...]“It's something I have noticed throughout my life: predators tend to sense a greater one, and to steer clear. Tell me, were you jumped a single time, while on those dangerous streets? Were you mugged? Beaten? Something worse? No?”
Switching to self-publishing halfway through a series sounds exhausting, if not outright impossible, and its noteworthy that Karen Chance has managed this feat without sacrificing the integrity of her storytelling. Instead of hacking off chunks of content to eke every cent from her inbuilt readership, Chance has taken pains to service the story while also trying not to make her effort a net loss.

Which is why this is half a story instead of a complete one.

Thankfully, the half we get is packed with everything I expect from a Cassie Palmer entry. Having the story start with Cassie and Pritkin traipsing around for Mircea in the past again wasn't the greatest introduction, but the following events more than made up for that. One of the most exciting elements of watching this series evolve is the expansive portrayal of the role of Pythia. After the glimpses we got last time with Gertie and Cassie, I was really shocked we got so much of them in Incendiary, including Rhea and Agnes. While I like Marco and the guys in Las Vegas, I feel like the series has outgrown the medley of meddling bodyguards pushing her around. The Pythia posse is a major upgrade.
So, yeah, the incubus understood power, but he didn't understand that it wasn't enough. I wasn't some kind of robot—plug her in and let her go. Or a Pythian Barbie: watch her defeat gods and fey kings and monsters galore. Now with a new accessory pack, a shiny golden whip!
It could be wishful thinking, but there was something definitive about the way the love triangle was handled this time around. While Mircea and Pritkin weren't as active players, Cassie made some interesting points about her relationship with both. Primarily, that Mircea and her don't work. And if that is truly a resolution, then I can accept the magical threesome that it took to get Cassie there. When Lovers Knot was initially brought up, some kind of magical sexcapade between Cassie, Mircea and Pritkin felt inevitable. Within the first nanosecond. That isn't to say that Lovers Knot exists to concoct this scenario—while frustratingly making her bound to Mircea (whose likability is directly proportional to how much leeway Cassie doesn't give him), it does allow Cassie to gleefully share their abilities and knowledge and I'm all for that. The focus on the Fey is still heavy but feels more purposeful than its been in either series for a couple books now, and I'm excited to see where this story goes.

**SPOILERS BELOW - READ AT YOUR OWN RISK**

I hate to say it but this one took me forever to finish reading. I usually enjoy the crazy ride, but not so much this time. I don't know if it was once again the constant over-the-top battles with no down time in between, which made the time jumps whenever they ran into Aeslinn a bit confusing. Or maybe it was because of all the overly descriptive imagery of what Cassie was seeing in Faerie (with all the trees, rocks and castles being described), and the pages and pages and pages of being in Cassie's head as she relived the memories of so many people I frankly cared nothing about. It got a little repetitive and boring, and I wished they would just cut to the chase already. And why can't we have her just hanging out with Marco having a cocktail in her own time for a minute, instead of constantly being with Gertie in the past? :)

But most importantly, I think my problem was the lack of Pritkin. He just adds a completely different vibe to the story which for me was lacking here. I'm also pretty disappointed that it appears Cassie has taken yet another step backward when it comes to her relationship with Pritkin. I mean after 14 years and a "love triangle" that I would bet NONE of the readers even still want (if they ever did), can we not have Cassie fully commit to Pritkin now? How often do we really need her to relive her fond memories of Mircea? And this time we were hit over the head with how much she misses him and still loves him. Ookay. Don't even get me started on the Lover's Knot connection, which Mircea once again lied about. Cassie had asked him to remove the spell after the last time she took him back in time. He said he did, but then he just had it reapplied again. I'm sorry, what exactly does she miss about her relationship with him when he always puts himself first? At this point it's looking like the Lover's Knot will be a permanent thing so she can keep that all important connection to Mircea, and his powers which she seems to enjoy so very much. I guess we'll just have to deal with it. After their latest time trip (once again as a favor to Mircea) Cassie ended up getting separated from Mircea and Pritkin and then immediately had to do battle with Aeslinn/Zeus which ended with Cassie gravely injured. Her burned skin was described as blackened, hanging off her body in some places and deep to the bone. So at this particular point yes, by all means, let's just now throw in a three-some. I did not find it to be hot at all due to the timing and previous description of Cassie's injuries. Even if the goal was technically to heal her, it just came off as an opportunity for Mircea and Cassie to enjoy being together "one last time." This encounter was orchestrated by Pritkin's incubus and I'm still trying to wrap my head around how it was even possible. Mircea said the incubus brought their consciousness to Cassie but not their bodies because they were in Faerie. And yet the sheets magically transformed into flesh identical in shape and color to their physical bodies, and they were apparently all able to have such satisfying sex in the end. What? To make matters worse, the incubus said he kept Pritkin's mind unconscious/asleep so he wouldn't put the brakes on everything. So you're saying the poor dude didn't even know? At least Cassie felt guilty about it afterward, even if she didn't while it was happening. I felt a little better about that ... until she started commenting on how absolutely beautiful the fey Arsen was and aggressively kissed him. Yeah, I can really feel your love for Pritkin right now, Cassie. She and Pritkin need to have one seriously awkward conversation soon, especially if this is how she's going to try to power up while she's in Faerie. Do I even want to know what she's going to do in the second half of this story? Probably not, but I'm sure I'll read it eventually.

What complete and utter trash. This wasn’t a book. It was a sequence of self-indulgent scenes. No character development at ALL. Barely any plot development. New characters, because she’s run out of excuses for other people to be confused and argue with Cassie for pointless reasons. Yet another “and then he told me,” because she’s run out of reasons to keep information from the reader. So she literally just… doesn’t tell the reader.

Mircea is unrecognizable, and I already didn’t like him. It was already bad that he put a sex curse on a little girl, then raised her to fall in love with him. Then lied to her and manipulated her. Threw in a non-consensual marriage for good measure. Tried to control her. Now he’s got her in another non-consensual sex curse that he’s (twice now) promised to remove and then refused. And that’s the parts of his personality that actually jive with his character from the beginning. On top of that, he’s now impulsive, not at all calculated, and reckless. And, no, “he’s got an obsession he can’t control” doesn’t make it any less necessary to treat him the way you’d treat a rabid dog. Necessary for the war effort? How? It’s not even happening off screen anymore.

But Cassie still lurves him, because the author really really wanted to write the least sexy threesome that has ever been committed to print. That, oh hey, was ALSO nonconsensual to the only character left who doesn’t completely suck. Because that’s right. One of the only scenes Pritkin even has involves him sleeping through a threesome in the spirit realm.

The opening battle in Fairie was the typical throwaway action sequence she always starts with. I was ok with it, and thought it was actually a little more decent than some of the ones in earlier books. It was even a little refreshing that it wasn’t just her failing at her objective, like all of the other books. The battle on the Thames was also great. And then the book stopped. And it was just tedious scene after scene after scene until it could end. I had been wondering if her editor asked her to split books, but I can’t believe any self-respecting editor allowed this to be published in this form. Chapters of italics? Several in a row?

I’m going to treat this like the cash-grab it clearly was. I sincerely hope the love triangle (quadrangle with Pritkin’s demon?) doesn’t ruin the good thing she could have been building. But I’m assuming the next book is where she put the actual plot, and she just couldn’t bring herself to get there in this book.

There were kind of a lot of typos should be poring not pouring (p48) and then I got to page 67 where Cassie says that her drinking tea with lemon horrified Pritkin so much that she switched to drinking it with milk like him....?! What? Why? That is just so Lame. I know it’s a tiny moment but that’s so cringey and pathetic. Who cares if she likes lemon in her damn tea.
In terms of plot we barely move ahead and now this book is being written as if it’s a script for an action sequence. It was very heavy on the weird fight scenes and we spent almost the whole book in memories of people doing things. I also felt like the Lovers Knot forcing them into a threesome was really lame. They were already in a sexual loop with Mircea feeding so the switch to sex felt unnecessary and too close to the reasons I hate the Anita Blake series. Ooh I’m so hungry and I can use someone else’s power to feed via sex. Sound familiar? Yeah way too familiar.

I have had it with the freaking Cassie saves Pritican Show.

What is this- the fourth, or the fifth book in which Cassie goes through Hell to save the most formidable war mage around? And now she has to keep hauling Mircea's butt out of the fire too?

Enough!

And it's a bleeding CLIFFHANGER!

It didn't need to be. Half of the bulk of this story is extraneous, unnecessary and Boring.

More saving Pritican. More saving Mircea. Its too much. I don't really care for either of them. At this point I'm just reading the Cassie stories because the Dory stories are running concurrently and I don't want to miss plot points. Please get to the point before my head explodes.

There was a bit of a wait (again) for Ignite the Fire, book 11 in Cassandra Palmer UF series, and when it finally arrived, it had been divided into two parts for its size. The first is called Incendiary.

The book starts with the exact scene the previous book ended, with Cassie, Pritkin and Mircea on their way to a fey party in 16th century Romania to locate someone who might know where Mircea’s long-lost wife is. There’s a lot of mayhem—and a dragon—which made me fear that the book would be yet another chaotic addition to the series.

Fortunately things slow down a little—for a moment. Enough to give Cassie and the reader time to reflect what’s going on and what’s happened so far in the series, which is a lot. And while it’s a short respite, the action and rest are better balanced here than has been the case in previous books.

The action scenes are easier to follow this time, with fewer things going on simultaneously and with better descriptions. The timeline is still messy though, as according to Cassie only six months has gone and the reader has witnessed it all, yet Cassie has an entire life happening between the books too.

There’s a new god giving Cassie trouble and this time it’s Zeus, who isn’t exactly easy to win. But he’s occupying the body of a fae king, so she sets out to defeat him instead. It doesn’t go easily, but instead of endless detours like usually where she ends up in a totally unrelated situation, she actually manages to locate him, if not like she imagined or planned.

Since this is the first part of a two-parter, there isn’t a final battle at the end of the book. The book ends in a middle of a fight-scene, with the worst kind of cliff-hanger. But hopefully the second part has already been written and we don’t have long to wait for the conclusion.

On the personal front, Cassie seems to have gotten the hang of her life as Pythia. Her court is in order, her successor, Rhea, is becoming truly formidable, and her self-confidence issues were at minimum. She again went through most of the book without taking care of her physical needs like eating, so if the gods don’t kill her, malnutrition will.

The love spell that ties her to Mircea and Pritkin, which Mircea promised was lifted, is back in effect—with some interesting consequences. But since Cassie really needs the strength and skills she can borrow from her companions, she doesn’t complain. But it may put her relationship with Pritkin in jeopardy. My only complaint is that Pritkin spent most of the book absent or unconscious, which is never good.

With a book this well balanced and interesting once again—and without Mircea’s obsession with his wife—I’m hopeful for the rest of the series. And I hope the second part comes out soon.

I think Cassie has no idea how much trouble she caused by killing the other gods and I would love to see the consequences of them on her like one day she will have to think that there is no way out of this she will have to sacrifice herself and wants and needs because she went down this path because of her mother and her father if she in the end going to sacrifice everything even her self to put things back where they’re supposed to be that means she has to be erased from this timeline that she’s in that there are consequences are going to come and she’s gonna have to become a god or erased from the timeline I think after Cassie is done with the war .and i would love to see Doria with The adventures next . And Cassie takes like a backseat

I got over halfway through this book in audio format. And, i cannot tolerate this new narrator, Em Eldridge. Her voice and the way she stresses and drags out the last word of EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE is irking me so bad. Like fingernails on a chalkboard. So, I DNF this book. I may pick it up in paper format in the future. But as of now, I'm done and won't attempt the next in the series either, since it's the same narrator.

I liked the former narrators. Cynthia Holloway and Jorjeana Marie were both very good. If one of them narrated this book and the next, I'd jump on it.

Sorry Em. Nothing personal.

2.75-3 - Huge cliffhanger, not much (near zero) progression in the storyline or characters, it had a couple of interesting parts, but mostly was running, falling, hiding, looking, yelling...

I will definitely read book #12 and doubt #11 will be included in any re-read of the series as I took nothing pivotal/vital from it that will not be covered in the next book. I still love the world and characters, but this was lacking for me.

Lots of Action But....

Enjoyable action as always but for some reason the author has decided to copy the Anita Blake series. For anyone who gave up on that series like I did, it's because it turned into a gong show where the protagonist Anita was useless and weak unless she was having a threesome or banging some other random dude to 'generate power' . Sad to see it happening here.

I have never given a Karen Chance book less than 4 stars. This book bored me to tears. I had to skip several chapters and honestly in the end couldn’t even finish it. The only parts I liked were with Gertie and Rhea when Cassie first finds herself back in Edwardian England. I’m going to try to read book 12 (the second half of book 11) because I’m hoping the series gathers up steam again and it’s so chaotic.

Book was good but it lack more scene of Cassie and pritkin.pritkin was unconscious a lot in the book I did not like that. Also Cassie should not be ready to forgive mircea so easily he had not even apologized to her .I don't trust mircea he always try to use casssie and there should be lot of grovelling from mircea before she even think about forgiving him .

I’m invested in the series so I’ll keep reading but the majority of this boom was a total waste of time! 95% of it was crap that could have been discussed rather than “lived” and she’s so damn whiny!!! I’m ready for Cassie to suck it up and deal with this!

This is book #11 and it is a part one of two. Yes, you do need to start at the beginning and also yes, this book does end on a cliffhanger. If either of those bother you then just keep looking for your next read:) I will say that book two will be out in a few months so waiting to be able to read them back to back isn't such a crazy idea.

I enjoy this series and there are some things that bug me. I like the way that Cassie does things her own way and sticks to her code of conduct. If Cassie likes someone then that is that. She does not care if it is allowed or a good idea and she does not fall in line with prejudices or accepted truths about others. Being inside Cassie's head is a bit of a trip down adult ADD lane. She is often distracted but at the same time her brain is working on patterns in the background and then will present her conscious brain with the solution. It is interesting but also a bit of a crazy ride.

In this book there are some scenes that seem to go on a really long time and only add a small amount to the overall plot. There are also some rabbit trails as far as adventures she goes on that seem random and hard to fit into the overall plot. My hope is that it all comes together in the end but I can't help wondering if some additional editing would have helped the book overall.

This book picks up where the last one left off and continues the crazy life the Cassie has lead for the last 6 months. We do get an idea of who the big bad is in this book and how it/they tie into the other bad guys from previous books. There are also some hints on new alliances with old enemies. I am not sure how I feel about the Mircea/Cassie/Pritkin connection but I am glad that she realized that Pritkin was the one to stick with. Cassie also has some big realizations about her relationship with Mircea that I think are good and will lead her in the right direction.....if she ever has the chance to take a breath!

Looking forward to the next book and seeing where Cassie and company go from here.
