He’s a hard hitter, she’s a straight shooter. Can they stop the sparks from flying? Do they want to?

Zane Winchester is a beast on the ice, known for racking up penalties and delivering hard blows. No one would suspect the complicated nature of his personal life, or just what it entailed. And no one, not even him, would have suspected what one unexpected encounter with a remarkable woman would do to his life.

Mara Matthews is a regular woman with a regular job and a regular life. Then she meets the father of one of her little students, and regular becomes the last word to describe her life. Zane is intense, funny, charming, and drop dead gorgeous; he shouldn’t pay any attention to someone like her. But Zane isn’t giving up, and Mara doesn’t want him to.

Welcome to Northbrook Hockey Elite!

Six professional hockey players used to play on an elite club team together, but have all separated and now play in the pro-hockey leagues. Not all of them were friends, yet circumstances bring them together, and for the greater good, maybe they can put aside their differences.

As Mara Matthews would say "lands!" what a story!! I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. I've been waiting on Zane's book since his appearance in Faceoff. The little bits of him I saw of him in Faceoff had me thinking he wasn't a character I'd enjoy reading about, but over the next couple of books I changed my mind. Holy Moly!! Where do I begin?

On-the-ice Zane is a hyper focused, hard hitting and a beast of a hockey player. Off-the-ice Zane is a gentleman, super dad, gentle, funny, romantic, and a great guy. Oh I forgot he's also gorgeous both on and off the ice. He's raising his adorable daughter Hope as a single dad with help from his cousin, who's Hope's nanny. I think he was as surprised by his interest in Mara (great name by the way 😉) as Mara was that he was interested in her. This man could melt more than butter, as he said in one of my favorite scenes, "Making things melt is my specialty." *swoon* Who knew making cinnamon rolls could be so sexy? #flameonflameoff

I loved that Zane and Mara's first meeting was something simple and ordinary--Hope forgot her jacket at her kids exercise class that Mara teaches. I also love that she didn't know who Zane was until she Googled him, and he was so easy going about her joining his mall outing with Hope. I thought Mara was perfect for him, and the fact that she has a competitive streak when playing volleyball made it all the better.

I wasn't prepared for the gut wrenching tale of how Zane became a single dad. He was WAY too good for Hope's 'mother' Michelle. She didn't deserve a man like Zane or a smart, adorable, little girl like Hope. Hope is one lucky girl to have all these hunky hockey players as her 'uncles'.

I think this book is my favorite so far (I know I probably say that every time). This one has lots of hockey action for those who are into hockey and lots of blazing hot chemistry between the main characters. Oh, and I LOVED the epilogue.

I love how Zane Winchester has evolved in this series. In the first book, he just seemed like a big bully on the ice, and I couldn't imagine liking him, but I do. Oh so much! Zane is very passionate about hockey and life. He loves his daughter, Hope, fiercely, and his Northbrook friends do too. I loved watching such tough men wrapped around her little fingers.

Mara Matthews is Hope's dance teacher, and the relationship with her and Hope is just as sweet as the relationship between Mara and Zane is powerful. I loved the controlled passion, the witty bantering, and the strong family emphasis in this story.

It's one that I couldn't put down. When I finished it, I found myself drawn back to read my favorite parts again.

Each story in the series can be read independently, but characters from previous stories do make appearances. Crosscheck and Faceoff have been my favorites in the series so far.

Content: clean (some making out, no language, hockey violence, fist fights)

Cinnamon roll...

Why do I insist on judging? When I first met Zane "Zamboni" Winchester, I thought, "What a jerk!" He's rough and tough on the ice, but a big ol' teddy bear off--especially where his adorable daughter is concerned. I absolutely loved learning Zamboni's story, especially as it shows how stand up, respectable, utterly adorable, and extremely hardworking he is. I'm a total fan!

To be honest, I was a little worried that this series couldn't possibly live up to the Belltown Six Pack baseball set, but don't worry--it totally does. This group may not have been tight when they actually played together, but their banter and the way they have each other's backs almost brings tears to my eyes every single time.

As for Mara, she's the perfect companion for Zane and precocious Hope. I love her playfulness and the way she interacts with this father and daughter. The romance was as sugary sweet, with a hint of spice, as a hot, delicious cinnamon roll, melting my heart like it's straight from the oven.

I can't get enough of this series and I'm dreading when it's over, but I just know another charming group will show up. Don't worry--my heart has plenty of room.

Content: mild romance, mild language

This is another great book from Rebecca Connolly! It might be my favorite of the series (although it's hard to pick!) Like Mara, I was totally drawn in by the fact that Zane is this fiercely loving and protective father. His interactions with Hope were so sweet and funny. The romance between him and Mara was pretty intense pretty fast, but I thought that fit well with Zane's all-in, totally loyal personality. This was fast-moving and lots of fun to read!

It's another Northbrook Hockey Elite book! I'm not a hockey fan but I wish I were. There aren't many opportunities to watch hockey where I live but if there were, I think I could be a hockey fan. This book really makes me want to watch hockey.

Zane is the best. He's just an all around good guy- well, on the ice he's got a bit of a reputation for intentional rough play but aside from that, he's got all the qualities that make for a great lead man. I loved how Zane recognized Mara's goodness right away, probably due to his daughter, but still. Yes, he was attracted to her but it was more than her looks. I loved how intentional Zane was and how he handled Mara and his daughter. It was so attractive. And, speaking of attraction. . . . There is plenty of attraction between Zane and Mara. Holy cinnamon roll scene, Batman. And can I please get some of that? Flame on.

This is probably my favorite book in this series so far. Did I say that last time? Hmmm. I love this group of hockey player friends. I love how they support each other and how they all rally around Zane and especially his little girl in this book. It melted my heart.

Content: Clean romance, kissing

Another favorite in the Northbrook Hockey Elite series! The chemistry between Zane and Mara is off the charts, and the author skillfully keeps the focus on their feelings and I appreciated the maturity of the characters in controlling their physical attraction in order to strengthen their relationship. Zane is larger than life on and off the ice- known for his aggression in the games, he is a devoted father and friend in life. I loved the natural and realistic development of their friendship and interest in one another, and Zane's adorable daughter Hope allowed the reader to see deeper layers of both the characters. A great balance between romance, hockey, and banter with the other members of the Pit kept the pace steady and swift where it was needed. I'm already looking forward to reading this one again!

Romance, clean; Series, but stand-alone read
This was a gorgeous read! I love R. C.'s characters in these series! She gets the interplay between the characters, adds a wonderful amount of intensity in her 'coverage'/description of the games, and just overall gets the interaction, pacing, and romance needed to move these novels forward. This is one of my favorites in this series so far. Having a little girl, the parent side of it, the romance, and the games, so perfect as she narrates these and pulls all these threads together. Well-crafted and a 'win' for me! Go Sabercats! I can't wait to read the next in this series! Zane and Mara are honest heartfelt characters, and the other members of the Sabercats on the former Northbrook Hockey team, are fun, their friendship, passion for their former teammates, add a nice touch to this story.

I’ve been waiting for Zane’s story, and this did not disappoint! I smiled, chuckled, or outright laughed on nearly every page. Zane, who I picture like Jason Mamoa, is a force to be reckoned with, but there’s a reason for that, and underneath is an amazing guy and dad. The Pit, of course, are also there to back him up. Mara is wonderful in keeping up with his sarcasm and intense feelings. I whole heartedly recommend this book!

Each book in this series can be read alone (but why would you want to?) or in any order.

Y'all, if you weren't hockey fans before this series...you are now! Just saying! Or you soon will become one. This is the fourth book in this series and since reading book one I have wanted to go watch a hockey game. I grew up watching hockey and played street hockey occasionally with the neighborhood kids. I loved it! And let me tell you, if you are wondering if the intensity of actually being at a live hockey game could be conveyed in a book, the answer would be, "yes, yes it can!" All three of the authors who are writing this series have honestly made me feel like I'm sitting in an arena watching and cheering and feeling the pulsating intensity of the crowd. It's taken me back to my childhood and being at live games with my dad! Such great memories. My favorite part was watching the guy up at the top of the ceiling (I don't remember what he was doing, lights, the train whistle, sound...something) and he was dancing around and rocking out to the music. My dad and I always loved getting seats so that we could be close to where we could see his dancing.

Enough of my reminiscing and on to more of my rambling thoughts about this book. Zane is our main character and I have been waiting for his book to come along since the first book introduced him and we as readers saw him as this hard hitting, gruff and tuff (tough), not so nice guy. Then we met his daughter in that book and oh boy, oh boy, did my brain do a 180 for my impression of him. And it made me very curious about his story. Each book that has come out I've kept my fingers crossed hoping that it would be Zane's book. Don't get me wrong, I was excited to have the other guys' books as well but there is just something about Zane that kept me waiting anxiously.

And I'm here to tell you that I wasn't disappointed in his book at all. Nope. Not. One. Bit! It was awesome. And it wasn't just Zane that made it that way. I loved the whole cast of characters...well maybe minus one. No spoiler on who that one is. And Zane's counterpart was fabulous as well.

Zane and Mara...sigh. I loved these two. They have a pretty great instant connection. They're straightforward about what they're feeling. No games. But there are definitely life circumstances that keep them from completely jumping into this relationship. With all of the hesitation and uncertainty though, I loved Zane's forthrightness. I'm grinning remembering several scenes. Mara showing up at his first hockey game, her parents, his teammates meeting her, Zane's daughter, their first kiss, the chemistry, the friendship, the banter and fun, the heartache and so much more...oh and the sweet love story.

Definitely a keeper and a reread for me. If you enjoy sports romances that are clean with plenty of chemistry and fun check out this book or this series. They can be read as stand alone books. And if you're not a sports romance reading fan...I dare you to pick this one up and not be hooked. Just saying!

Content: Clean. Some kissing, making out and some mild innuendos but nothing further. Talk about divorce and parental rights.

I received a copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Ever since I started the Northbrook Elite series, I have been dying to read Zane's book. I was crossing my fingers that I would love it as much as the first book in the series. Y'all I'm happy to announce that I loved it more! It may be because the single parent trope is one of my favorites or it may be seeing a big, bad hockey player melt when it comes to his little girl. Either way I loved this book!

I absolutely adored Mara, Zane and Hope! Seriously you guys.. they are amazing! Their love for each other is strong. They made it so easy for me to root for them from the very beginning. Hope was seriously the cutest! I loved how she had everyone wrapped around her finger. She definitely helped make this on a favorite of mine. And lets not forget all the swooniness going on. I. Was. Dying! WOWZERS! Once again, this girl was a big ol' puddle of goo. Y'all I never wanted their book to end. I finished it a couple of hours ago and I'm still playing out scenes I wish were in the book. Haha. And let me just tell you. That epilogue?! LOVED it! It was just what this girl needed! *dreamy sigh*

One of my favorite things about this series is that everyone seems down to earth, real and easy to relate to. The close friendship between them all is another added bonus and it really showed in one scene of this book. They don't even think twice about rallying around each other when one of them is in need of anything. They stand together like brothers.

Another great addition to this series! I already know this will be one that I read over and over again. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Crossing my fingers that the other books are just as good.

Ms. Connolly really knows how to write a great contemporary. I've loved the ones I've read so far. I'm also looking forward to reading her regency books as well. Several of my bookish friends love them!

And of course we can't forget my casting. I think this is the first time I haven't followed the descriptions to a tee. I'm not going to lie. I'm so not a fan of man buns! But if anyone can pull it off, it's him. *dreamy sigh*

I have never seen a hockey game in my life. After reading this book, I think I would love watching hockey. That being said, I loved this book. Zane is a force to be reckoned with on the ice but when he is off the ice, he is steady, dependable, and has a softer side. Mara is a delight. She is a hard worker with a competitive side. I loved the banter between Zane and Mara. Hope is a ray of shining light. I love the glimpses of the rest of the Northbrook Hocky greats from The Pit. Great book!

I’m loving these sports romances! It’s so fun that they all fit together. I love the characters and how they really have each other’s backs, even though they’re not on the same team any more.

This one features Zane and Mara. Zane is probably my favorite Northbrook Elite player so far! I love the way he takes care of his sweet daughter, Hope. He’s a big guy, but he’s really putty in her hands. And it was really funny that all the other guys were too.

Mara is a nurse/Zumba instructor. In fact, she’s Hope’s Zumba instructor. That was one thing I really loved about Mara. She is around kids an awful lot and she’s amazing with them.

I really loved the way these two characters just fit together. As I was reading the places in the book where they were separate, it just seemed like something was missing. When they were together, it just worked.

I loved everything about this one! And now I need to watch some hockey!

A really cute story. I think Zane's little girl Hope stole the show, however. I love seeing how loved she was by her dad and the team. Zane's intensity was swoon-worthy, and Mara matched him in every way. There were a few bumps on their road to love, and the last one seemed unnecessary to me, but overall, this was one of my favorites from the series so far. And I LOVED the epilogue! So sweet!

Crosscheck is a great addition to the Northbrook Hockey Elite series. This novel definitely taught me a lot about hockey with well-written descriptions of hockey plays and penalties I had zero knowledge about. That being said I did not feel like it was too heavy on the game details that I felt lost since I am not a follower/fan of the sport per say. The romance level in the book was good in that the chemistry and tension between Zane and Mara just flew off the pages. I enjoyed the clean passion they had between them and the respect they had for one another. I do think there wasn't a ton of emotional depth between the two at first even though there was the instant physical attraction. The story line including Zane's daughter made the relationship have an added layer which I enjoyed. I didn't like Zane's hotheadedness though and how he had a bit of a violent temper (granted it wasn't directed for the most part at people).
If you are looking for a clean contemporary romance with some good kissing scenes and instant attraction for the characters, this book will probably be right up your alley.

Love, love, loved it! I appreciate Mara’s morals. I’m not sure what Mara was going to say to Ms. Perfection about Hope’s dad, but I’m sure glad she faced her fears to do it. It removed the barriers to the beginning of something amazing with her and Zane. I love that their story does not involve a break up, and at the same time I can admire the need for her to be sure about moving forward. Michelle’s role in this story added a whole new level of emotion to a passionate love story. Are there really mothers out there that feel that way towards their own child? It tugged on this mother’s heart for sure. But the sadness of that choice helped Mara see how important it was for her to be absolutely solid in her decision to stay in a relationship with Zane and Hope. I appreciate that this series includes the couples I’ve already grown attached to in the previous book releases. Bree and Clint are a couple, and Meg and Summer are mentioned in this book. The Six Pack stories seemed to be more stand alone even though they covered similar time periods. Much thanks to Rebecca Connolly for sending me a copy!

I like this series in general and I like that it includes the sport in the story but I also find hockey to be so violent. Reading this series has made me want to avoid ever going to a game. A cold arena and violence. Not a draw for me.

Zane is a loving and tender caring father. I love that his daughter isn't a spoiled brat even though he has plenty of money. She is pretty cute. Zane's ex wife is a piece of work. I don't think I've read these circumstances in a story before. I didn't predict that one coming.

I liked Mara and thought she was very sweet with the kids she had in her dance class. Their romance moves quickly and with intensity.

As always I enjoy the banter among the pit and love when they get together though their text messages are just as much fun.

Sex: intense kissing
Language: a little - mild
Violence: Hockey and a brawl

While I’ve enjoyed reading about two of my favorite things (hockey and romance) in the Northbrook Hockey Elite series, Crosscheck turns it up with two more things I love—Tennessee and Zumba.

Those who have followed this series met Zane Winchester and his sweet little girl in book one. Now we get a formal introduction to the man also known as Zamboni. The guy may be an animal on the ice but when it comes to his daughter, he’s a complete marshmallow. And it’s no wonder Mara Matthews is drawn to him.

As a Nashvillian, I can attest to several things the author included in the book. We do notice the stars when we’re out and about but we also leave them alone. The people are also fanatic about their college football, and hockey fans tend to us that (with a little Nascar thrown in) at the games.

Readers new to hockey can learn about the game right alongside Mara. Her interest in the game once she realized who Zane was is adorable. One little hockey correction to the book, though. Overtime during the regular season is played four-on-four (not the full five-on-five) as depicted in Crosscheck. Since this is a fictionalized version of the NHL, though, I’ll let that little slip go.

Crosscheck is an excellent combination of hockey, the hockey life for players when family is involved, and romance. With the addition of Hope (who, at times, steals the show), this one is my favorite in the series thus far.

I expected to enjoy this book, but wow... I loved it! 😄
I really wasn’t sure what to expect from Zane’s story. He always seemed a bit of a loud, larger than life kind of character in the other books. It wasn’t until I found out he had a daughter and read some of his interactions with her that I realised there was more to his character - which had me intrigued. Mara is the perfect fit for him. I loved her personality and their chemistry. All of their interactions - reading the story from both points of view at times, and of course getting to read more about Hope and the other Pit members was just great.
I loved that although the relationship between these two was quite intense and quick, the story remains clean throughout. I can’t tell you how appreciative I am of this! Wholesome and clean is so important in my reading options. To have it still be a romance and fun at the same time is wonderful. I can definitely recommend this series to anyone.
I received my copy of this book as an ARC. I am not required to give a review - I do so out of appreciation for a book well written!

I was really curious about Zane because he really stood out in the first book! I thought that Zane and Mara had a sweet relationship. This was a fun, quick read. I like when there is a little more build-up and tension in a relationship, things moved a bit quickly for me with this one. But overall, it was a fun read and I enjoy seeing characters from previous stories.

Have you ever finished a book with your mouth hurting from grinning so much? It is a rare occurrence for me, but I truly think I had a grin on my face the entire time I read Crosscheck. Rebecca Connolly knocked this book out of the park...or rink!

Since starting the Northbrook Hockey Elite series I have been in love with Zane Winchester, and have been impatiently awaiting to read his story, so hopes were high when I was finally able to pick it up, and boy did it NOT disappoint!

Zane meets Mara and instantly they have the sweetest chemistry! It actually feels organic and true to life, and though they are worlds apart in so many ways, you see the effort to make their relationship real, and it is so inspiring! I believe what really made me truly enjoy this novel was the small similarities between the budding relationship of Zane and Mara and my own love story, evoking beloved memories in my mind and heart.

Zane is a charming, doting father to the lovable and adorable Hope, and the single parent trope, especially when it comes to single fathers, always tugs at my heartstrings. The two of them together were some of my favorite parts of the book, always making me smile. So sweet!!

This series has been such a joy to read, seeing the connection and genuine friendship between the members of The Pit is heartwarming. The action scenes on the ice are amazing! It is because of this series that I have actually started watching real hockey games, which is something I never thought I'd hear myself say.

Mara and Zane are the perfect couple, and officially my favorite couple of the group. I devoured this novel, the writing fun and engaging, the characters fleshed out so perfectly, and so down to earth. I could see giving Crosscheck a second read! Yes, it is that good!

As with the rest of the Northbrook Hockey Elite series, Crosscheck can be read as a standalone, but I don't think you will connect to Zane as much if you do not read the other books in the series and truly see where Zane has been, and why the rest of us are so in love with him. Hands down, this was one of my favorite reads of 2020!

My New Fave in Swoony Sports Romance!

I adore Rebecca and all the books she writes. From regency to swoony sports romance she has the ticket.
But this story, THIS BOOK, is definitely my favorite of the Northbrook Hockey Elite series.
When we first met Zane, in Clint's Story (book 1 of the NHE Series), I wasn't a huge fan but glimpse of him in the other books led me to start believing in a softer side of the huge defender. I was overjoyed to read his story and see the love he has for his daughter, the love and competitiveness of Hockey, and his growing feelings for Mara come through Rebecca's story.
Recently Rebecca posted on social media about how hard days at work make for hard nights of writing (logic to creativity is just hard in general). When I read her post I commented about how I believe that those 'hard' nights of writing show through in her work but that they also make the stories come together cohesively.
Thanks Rebecca for this outstanding story and for the time you spend putting these masterpieces together.

I have been waiting for Zane's story, I have been wanting to know his background from what made him tick to his little girl Hope. There was a mystery there that I wanted to figure out. Crosscheck answered all of those questions and took us inside Zane's heart and mind. It was effortless and easy to read, just the pick me up I was looking for! From the hockey, romance, The Pit, and Hope this book had it all. Excitement on the ice, Zane's hard-hitting penalties, romance with Mara, and the bakery Mara's parents own. And that cinnamon roll baking scene, the heat was palpable (I may have swooned)! I love the Northbrook Elite Series and Crosscheck is another fantastic installment! Zane and Mara were absolutely adorable! He is intense, an animal on the ice, but a super cute and descent father and friend the rest of the time. He and his daughter Hope have a close and warm relationship. And Mara was a wonderful addition to their family. She was fun and energetic, gentle and soothing. I liked a lot her honesty - she didn't want to feel an attraction to a man that was taken and was brave enough even to confess it. So at the end of this book I was feeling warm and cozy and super happy how things worked out for them.
Narrative: 3rd person following Zane and Mara.
Religion: none
Sensuality: overall clean, but some steamy kissing and innuendo
