After a life changing event, eleven-year-old Jean wakes up to a world she doesn't recognise. Her childhood has been replaced by hospitals and court rooms, her friends with doctors, police officers and judges. Her devastated mother vows to protect her and takes monumental decisions, with unexpected and far reaching consequences.

Years later, Britain wakes up to a strange pandemic. A virus is spreading across the male population. Hospitals are overwhelmed, the infrastructure quickly crumbles and as men begin to die, experts warn that this is no accident.

This is a fantastic first novel and I really hope there’s a sequel as I need to know what happens next!

The narrative is split between 2025 when a virus that only targets men sweeps through Britain, and the virus’ architect, Jean, whose story begins in 1985.

Although the main premise of the book isn’t new, the story is a refreshing take on the idea of a pandemic. Jean’s story is harrowing, but her strength of vision is second to none. The story raises all kinds of questions which take you on a moral and emotional rollercoaster. You feel the anger in the situations these women encounter that mirror everyday reality, even the more minor ones: the fear of walking alone at night and the male boss who belittles young female staff. There’s so much to think about after the final page. You can’t help feeling empathy for Jean and her comrades who orchestrate these horrific events, but equally the devastation they cause is unimaginable. And you’re also left thinking, what if?

Loved it! Fast paced writing kept me entertained all the way through. You could feel the main characters hurt that turned into determination. What happens next?!
