Marlowe Glass and Clark Hudson grew up together, side-by-side, neighbors and best friends in the same small town. Now, both single parents, they are each other’s main support. They carpool together, kid sit for one another, and share pretty much everything except a home. And even though they are very different, they balance one another out perfectly. They are truly best friends.
So, when a horrible storm destroys Marlowe’s house, she doesn’t hesitate to accept Clark’s offer to stay at his farm until she and her daughter can find permanent housing.
While bad weather may have taken out Marlowe’s home, a manipulative ex-wife is trying to take full custody of Clark’s son. And when Marlowe and Clark’s bond turns into an undeniable attraction, Clark fears giving into it may threaten their friendship and his son’s position in his life.
Neither Marlowe nor Clark can imagine a life without the other, but are they willing to risk it all to show one another what a romance between two best friends can truly become?

Plot: Clark and Marlowe have been friends forever. They help each other raise their children, Clark's son from his failed marriage and Marlowe's niece that she's adopted. They're a team, and a good one. But they're starting to look at each other a little differently, and events are conspiring to speed that up: a tornado that destroys Marlowe's house, a visit and demand from Clark's ex-wife, and an opportunity for the future. They'll have to decide what they really want out of life now (and by "they," I mean Marlowe, and that's important to my commentary).
Character development: So. I read clean romances every now and then if I get them for free. They're not my favorite, but I don't automatically discount them. I only ever read Christian romances by accident, because I don't like the editorializing, because it's never in the direction that I prefer. I know that and don't want to make myself angry while doing my favorite activity (reading). So this was an accident. Lots of praying and singing hymns - fine. But the messages about women's places - not as fine. Marlowe comes into some money and has the chance to go back to college. Her previous time in college was cut short when her mom and sister died and she had to come home and take care of her niece. She isn't bitter about that, but maybe a little disappointed that she didn't get to do the thing she really wanted. But when she gets that chance again? Nobody can believe she would do that. Apparently, it's up to her to make all the compromises and not go back to school. Because of Proverbs. Godly women. A lot of stuff that matters to devout Christians - I understand and am not mad about that, even if it's not the story I would have chosen. But I find it inherently unfair that it was assumed that Marlowe would not take the opportunities in front of her, that if she wanted Clark, she had to stay there at home with him (and I mean at home in their town) and there were no other options explored. I know that for a lot of people, that sort of hierarchy is a given. A woman's place in life, in a relationship, in the home, is a given. And sure enough, Marlowe came to the divinely inspired decision that her place was there by Clark's side, and maybe she could take some online classes while running his parents' store. Her role model? The pastor's wife who convinced her that society wants us to do things that may be against God and the Bible. So yeah, this was not a story meant for me. Also:
“What? You want me to be a woman?” he asked in mock horror. “I’m not one of those people who think that can be changed.”
Again - I'm not the person this story was written for. The people it was written for probably agree with Clark. I do not. That's not even how being transgender works.
If you like small town romance and like best friends to lovers, look no further.
To be honest, I skimmed. I can’t tell you much about the book. I was just done because the author’s writing. I felt like she showed and told. What do I mean? She would show something with Clark and Marlowe then proceed to tell us about what we were just shown. That is where I had my problem.
Other than that a quick read. I feel like this could be a palette cleanser for some and others it will be their favorite. Another problem could be that I have another book I’m reading and I really want to be in that book than this one. That could also have figured into my star rating.
Also, this book title used to be Best Friends in the Show Me State. I like the new title better.
I borrowed Best Friends in the Show Me State from the Kindle Unlimited Program.
Marlowe Glass and Clark Hudson have lived next door to each other just outside Cowboy Crossing, Missouri since kindergarten and have been best friends and helped each other, teased and supported one another their entire life.
Marlowe is has adopted her niece, Kylie when her mother, sister and sister's husband died in a car accident. Clark is a single dad after his life left him with his son Huck, giving Clark full custody of Huck. Both children are five and in kindergarten and best friends.
A tornado, the ex-wife returns and causes trouble, a windfall of money as Clark and Marlowe realize that they are in love with each other. The plot and dialogue is funny, the emotional level of the romance in intense and the faith they both show is inspiring as they figure out what is best for them and the children. GREAT CHRISTIAN READ!
This is the first book by Jessie Gussman that I have had the pleasure of reading. Not sure why I didn't read any of her books sooner. I have been missing out.
This book is about two people (Marlow and Clark) that have been best friends forever. Marlow has been through a lot. She lost her Mother and sister and her sisters husband in an accident. She had to leave College to take care of her sisters daughter, Kylie. Which she didn't mind at all.
Clark was married and his wife left him to take care of their son saying she didn't want to be married or be a mother. One thing leads to another and the two friends aren't sure if they want to be just friends anymore or take it further.
I really enjoyed this book at first. I would have given it 4 stars if the ending wasn't so abrupt. I felt like their was barely an ending, it was just over.
The back-and-forth between the two main characters was the strongest point in favor of this book. I loved it! It made me smile, chuckle and smirk. I look forward to the others in the series! Cowboy/farmer wit is one kind I enjoy. I loved how the story had substance. There were difficult circumstances, there was resolution, and then sometimes the hope of resolution was strong enough to carry the story.
There were a few things I didn't like as much, so that bumped it down to four stars. They're personal-opinion aspects, though, and not really anything to do with the quality of the writing. (Read on if you'd like specifics; end here if you don't want spoilers)...
I'm one of those gals who prefers to fastforward Disney movies to the good parts, skipping the villain scenes. If a villian is too 'villainy', I get squeamish. The ex-wife in this story was a bit too 'villainy' for my tastes. I can't really fathom someone being that 2-sided and shallow, so the main characters' voicing that opion validated me, at least, but I would have rather the resolution not have been as cut and dry. Life seems to have much more gray area in my experience.
The other aspect I didn't like was the theme of a woman's being the heart of the home. It's simply too generalized to be applicable. There is a time and season for things, and I don't agree with the standpoint taken by the strong women in the story. I would have loved to have seen a strong career woman who also was portrayed in such a positive, stalwart light. A woman isn't strong because of sacrificing, she's strong because of what she succeeds at accomplishing in line with her values. It seemed like the women who were homemakers were put on a pedestal. As a woman, that sets up a precedent that could impede my well being and that of my family. What if God intends me to have a career? Am I always to feel 'less than' if I choose that path, simply because I'm not a full-time homemaker? Somethings a bit off with that part of the story line and I wish it were handled differently. God does, indeed, direct wonderful women into wonderful careers. I'm uncomfortable putting other women on a pedestal at the cost of sacrificing the notoriety and commendability of women who chose other paths. I guess we're a summary of who we are, not what we do. What we do is a symptom (or result) of who we are.
This is a sweet, clean romance between two best friends who have failed to see what has always been right in front of them. Life hasn’t been easy for either of them, but they have always had each other and their friendship. Clark and Marlowe have been best friends since they were little kids. Both are now single parents and often end up splitting parenting duties. They have an easy camaraderie, often filling in for each other when needed without being asked. They know each other inside and out, including their faults, weaknesses and insecurities. Not wanting to lose the connection between them, they each put the other firmly in the friend zone, and labeled anything else as taboo. But lately they have started to see each other in a different light. The reappearance of Clark’s newly remarried ex wife and her sudden claim for custody of their young son, the son she rarely visits, puts other thoughts into his and Marlowe’s heads. Both think that if they married, Clark might have a better chance to retain custody. As they examine the reasons for marriage, it becomes clear to both of them that the love they feel for each other isn’t just the love one has for a best friend. They are in love and probably have been for quite some time. Friends and family have seen it, but not them. Just as they open their eyes to a new relationship together, Marlowe is given a chance to complete a dream she has had for a long time, a dream that will take her away from Clarke. Will she choose to pursue her past dream, or make new dreams with Clarke and claim a happily ever after she has never let herself expect?
This is a beautifully written, thoughtful story with two main characters that will grab your heart and imagination. They are like many of us who just go with flow of life, afraid to reach for more, especially if it involves risking our hearts. Sometimes we just need to be brave and reach toward love and something bigger. I loved this book! I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Best Friends In The Show Me State is a story about a boy and girl that grew up next door to each other all their lives and were always best friends. They go to thinking about being more than friends and what that could mean for them. They also leave the cellar to find a big tree laying on Marlowe's house. This allows her and Kylie to stay at Clark's house and continue their normal everyday life. Make a choice after praying that she feels God is pushing her toward as it will effect the rest of their lives.
Marlowe and Clark have been best friends since grade school. Together they have helped each other through death, divorce and child rearing. Marlowe adopted her niece after her sister died, so living next to Clark whose son is the same age has been a blessing. Clark knows Marlowe has his back no matter what and she has been more of a mother to his son Huck than his ex ever was. So when over the space of three days a tornado hits causing a tree to fall on Marlowe's house and Clark's ex shows up with her new husband, announcing she wants custody of Huck, the friendship is tested and strengthened. Simultaneously, Clark and Marlowe realize that they are more than best friends. As Marlowe and Clark explore what that means, while living in the same house and meshing their different parenting styles, other challenges come their way. Through faith, prayer and help from the community, Clark and Marlowe find the happy life together they want.
Best Friends in the Show Me State is very well written and took this native Missourian back to my roots. The characters all live in my home town with different names and faces. The struggles the main characters go through are real as are the efforts of the community to help. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy books that represent contemporary small town life with a touch of romance and a lot of faith.
I received a copy of this book from the author and the opinions expressed are my own.

This is one of the few authors I read that continuously leave me with a better feel than I started with. I don't read many straight romances anymore their predictable and have scenes I can do without. With this author I not only get all the romance but I get morals and no scenes my grands can't pick up my book without me grabbing it back. Her books like this one take you to a place you had to be at some point in your life and the choices you made. We all have them. The difference is of course it's a book so their choices always work out.
Best friends first, can it lead to more. They never thought so but their whole lives led up to the night they realized there could be more. As always when everything is perfect there arises the deceiver. When faced with the chance to make past dreams come true she's got to figure out if God's plan was always in the works to put her right where she needed to be. This is what happens when the past and the present and all of the time in-between bring us to the now. Loved it and her characters (of course ) and am still so happy I stopped and took the time to read and digest.

This sweet, clean, Christian romance is the introduction to the Cowboy Crossing series and centers around the oldest of the Hudson “boys”, Clark, and Marlowe Glass, his best friend since childhood as well as neighbors. Their friendship has been special . Each supporting the other, especially when Clark was left to be a single parent to his adorable son Huck, and Marlowe became mom to her niece after the child’s parents and Marlowe’s mother were killed in an accident. A little family was created in this platonic friendship. But what happens when life throws them a curveball, rather quite a few of them, and they come to realize that their friendship has become more than that? Will they be tempted to pursue those feelings which might risk their friendship? Will an unexpected turn of events change Marlowe’s trajectory in life? It was a very sweet and touching start to the series which I suspect will continue with another of the Hudson siblings. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
One of the best friends-to-lovers stories I've ever read!
Marlowe & Clark share such fun banter that I was fully entertained just reading their repartee, & the way they were always there for each other was pretty dreamy, but I also loved that they handled their concerns about the possibility of messing up their friendship in a realistic way instead of the typical overly angsty fear of communication trope.
And Marlowe's struggle to discern God's will for her life was classic. Sometimes we assume that opportunity equals God's ordaining will when He's actually opening a door to something else for us. In Marlowe's fictional case, being omnisciently aware of her internal struggle with resentment, God could have even been gifting her the opportunity to choose to stay rather than feeling obligated to do so this time.
The story manages to be excellent entertainment and even thought-provoking - certainly one of the author's best!
Clark and Marlowe have been best friends who grew up together. He married a woman named Dana and had a boy named Huck. Dana took off leaving everything behind breaking Clark and Huck’s hearts. They divorced and everyone moved on.
Marlowe lost her sister and mother in a accident. Her sister had a baby and when she died Marlowe adopts Kylie, making her niece/adopted daughter. She gave up her dreams of university to raise her daughter.
Clark and Marlowe live next door to each other and help out when needed. One take the children to school and the other picks up, they baby sit for each other and when a tornado is coming they all go into Clark’s basement.
One evening a storm blows through and a large tree crashes into Marlowe’s home. Dana comes back like the wicked witch of the East and wants custody of Huck after all these years.
With insurance money Marlowe can now thinks of fulfilling her dream. Great story I enjoyed reading this book!
Marlowe Glass and Clark Hudson have been best friends since childhood. As adults and single parents, they still live next door to each other and although they sometimes tease each other unmercifully, they can always count on each other for help and support. Marlowe adopted her niece Kylie following the death of Marlowe’s sister and mother and Clark and his son Huck have been on their own since Clark's wife Dana abandoned them. Nothing is worth jeopardizing their friendship, especially letting their relationship to another level since it would mean the end of their friendship if it didn’t work out but a tornado and an ex-wife may be an unwelcome catalyst for change.
Jessie Gussman never disappoints me! I fell in love with Marlowe and Clark; they are such a wonderful couple. I really enjoyed this book and believe any clean romance lover will tool.
A new series with a fantastic first book from Jessie Gussman! The story of Clark and Marlowe has them being best friends for many years. They have always stood by each other and had each other’s back. Although different in parenting styles they trust each other with both children. They treat them as their own. As they sit in the storm cellar with the sleeping children, something changes. Romance had never been part of their friendship. Why ruin a great thing? Then, Clark’s ex returns and wants sole custody of his son. Clark and Marlowe need to band together to prevent this from happening. Such a great story and I can hardly wait to see what is coming next! Thank you, Jessie for always keeping me entertained! I received an advance copy of this book and I voluntarily wrote an honest review.
This book attracted my attention because of location & weather, but I wasn't sure I'd make it thru the first chapter. The bantering back & forth with Clark & Marlowe gave me anxiety knowing the kids were going to be late for school! Seriously, though, farming, small town life, single parenthood, family & a tornado make this clean, Christian romance enjoyable.
I saw one review that seemed to have a problem with this book not giving Marlowe the power to take charge of her life, get her education & be successful. I didn't see it that way! Maybe it's just with everything happening in today's world, I really liked that this book brought me back to thinking about what really is important. What is considered successful for one woman, may look a lot different for another woman and that is okay!
From childhood friends to falling in love. Playful banter abounds between Clark & Marlow but as single parents, they are serious when it comes to helping each other raise their children. From school drop offs to dealing with a crazy ex-wife, they make it work seamlessly as only best friends can. But sheltering together during a storm changes everything and they realize they have moved past friendship to something more. Can they trust that God has a plan for them and accept God's will? Jessie has a true gift for sharing the word of God thru her stories. I received this copy free from the author and am under no obligation to leave a review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am freely sharing my opinion.
Even though it's not usually my go-to trope, I found myself enjoying this best friends-to-more story. I liked the fact that they were both single parents and thus, had things/ issues to work through (mainly exes, consequences of divorce, loss of family, etc). I also liked how Marlowe was super organized vs. Clark's not (or, well, not in the same areas), and how that helped to complement each other. What I certainly loved was the Christian faith aspect and the reminder of always seeking God's will. I know the author presents an "against the current" POV, but I think that was one of my favorite parts of this book. All in all, a great start of a new series, and I can't wait to read Chandler's story. ~ 4.5 stars
I continue to be amazed at Jessie Gussman's amazing skills as a storyteller! I read plenty of authors and while I have several I would consider top of my list, I think Jessie Gussman is taking over the #1 spot. She brings together engaging characters, a believable and enjoyable storyline and weaves in some incredible humor that actually makes me laugh out loud.
Now that I have had my first experience listening to an audiobook by Jay Dyess, I finally understand what other reviewers have said about this dynamic duo (sorry to Batman and Robin but Jessie and Jay have taken over your catchphrase lol)! Jay Dyess has taken this book to a whole other level of awesome. I cannot wait to build my collection with more from this terrific team.
Nop, thank you. I kind of liked the first half, I can read novel that have people that believe in God I have no problem with that but it gets to a point where the decisions that they make are all about God's plan and that bothers me, I don't care about clean novels or dirty novels(those are stupid concepts by the way) just don't please, the hero makes it like if you go and do what you want with your education it mean that you dont love me enough, like he is not willing to wait for her and she is the one that has to decide if she goes or stays and that's dumb, he says I could go with you but God wants me here, no dude, you are not even thinking it, you just say I love you but I do t love you enough to choose my own pat
Marlowe and Clark have been best friends since they were in diapers. Now, several years later and after a few tragedies, Marlowe is raising her niece Kylie, as Clark is raising his son Huck, both on their own. They help each other out as best they can and provide for the missing parent for each other’s child. Up until Clark’s ex-wife threatens to take away Huck. Marriage to one another seems to be the solution to that problem, but they simply don’t know if they are willing to risk the best friendship for a romantic relationship… The plot and characters pulled me in right away. I appreciated several messages the author wrapped throughout the different scenarios. Enjoy this story as Marlowe and Clark discover that their friendship provides a strong foundation for a special relationship.
The Audible book is Mesmerizing! This was my second time around listening to this story on Audible and realized there were a lot of things I missed the first time around. Now I think I would enjoy listening to this story again and again. I was especially touched when as they were sheltering together in Clark’s basement during a threatened tornado, they sang hymns together to hold fear at bay. Furthermore, I felt my heartstrings pull when Clark saw for the first time the large oak tree that had sat between their houses had fallen on top of her house. Their experiences through these difficulties brought them closer together and they both realized they wanted to be more than best friends. I also enjoyed Jay Dyess’ performance throughout this story. He has a broad spectrum of voices that flow seamlessly throughout the story. He also sings in various harmonies! Very easy to listen to. Mesmerizing! I would highly recommend getting this Audible book to experience for yourself.
My Dearest Marlowe by Jessie Gussman is a tender, sweet and clean romance with some fun banter! This is the first book in the Cowboy Crossing series.
Marlowe and Clarke grew up and have been best friends all their lives, now they’re living side by side helping to raise each other’s kid. Through the many snacks, Sunday dinners and school drop offs feelings between them have become charged and waters are tested.
I love the simplicity yet complexity of these characters. I love the banter between the main characters and how you see their flaws and insecurities and how you see them working through them.
I recommend this book for a clean Christian romance fiction with a HEA that’s part of a series.
A very cute story! I loved this friends to lover story. I thought it was so cute that the main characters were already like a family with both of them raising a five-year old. I loved how they had been friends forever and that now as they have grown up they started to see how they could be more then friends. I thought this was a very sweet story and I loved how they were there for each other through the hard times and helped each other figure out what was most important. I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Jessie Gussman wrote an interesting story about Clark and Marlowe, who were best friends since they were little. Now all grown up with each trying to raise a precious five year old they realize that their feelings are more than friendship. I enjoyed watching the sparks fly. I liked that they were afraid to chance a relationship for fear they could ruin their friendship. I also liked that they were both trying to figure out what was God's will. I fell in love with the cover before I even started reading the book! I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
A brand new series. What’s not to love about Jessie’s book. They are always full of small country town life and the people who reside there.
I found it a little slow to begin with but once I got into it I couldn’t put it down.
I just love a good best friends to lovers romance and this one did not disappoint. Throw in a bit of external tension to see how they cope and you have the perfect combination. The proposal was perfect for these two.
Go get it and enjoy the first book in what is sure to be an amazing new series.
I received this as a complimentary copy and I am giving my honest review voluntarily.
