I loved this book for hundreds of reasons. Tim Davis, the writer, explained well each aspect of life both for professional and layman. Broadly it is expected that self-motivation is a very crucial aspect in life that to see all words in a positive way. Further, this can also make them unable to accept challenges and develop and self-attitude to handle and cope with failures and successes. In this book, I have learned that self-motivation is a man's own will power and acceptance. The man learns this will power for their past experiences and struggles. When he feels troubles and difficulties in his life once he was shocked. But, his motivation and sufficient work make him able to on track. The persons, who are facing troubles and difficulties in their lives, must read this book for motivation. And learn the method to survive in a positive way. The writer also told that, sometimes we have broken in our relationships, and/or someone our dears leave this world. We suddenly shocked to hear these types of incidents. Yes, it is true that it is very difficult to forget these moments. But this is the reality that, we should just accept this incident for our better future. If we fail to forget then it will destroy us. He also told that we cannot go against the law of nature. If we go then it will ruin our future and whole life. Further, he recommends that we must self-motivated during hard times. Tim Davis explains that we can remain self-motivated by refreshing our past moments with our special persons, keeping health on top priority, keeping approach atomistic, spend time alone, learn and meet with experts and seek suggestions, remember to do proper planning and must analysis performance, and remind major achievements and learn to forget bad memories.
Tripolar: The Story of a Bipolar Triathlete is a memoir by Tim Davis. The book started with a prologue, then the first chapter told his story from when he was only 13. What was supposed to be a happy bonding with his father, turned out to be a traumatic event that changed his life. And in dealing with pain and distress, he numbed himself through alcohol and substance abuse. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but denied this illness as well as his addictions. Through triathlons and ultra-endurance racing, he was able to keep his sobriety and mental health.
Review
This book teaches mental, physical, and spiritual healing straight from a broken man who has bipolar disorder, and has suffered from the consequences of alcohol and substance abuse. I am shocked that someone would go through any lengths to pacify the need to drink and get high. That kind of life is a nightmare, not only for the user, but mostly for the user’s family.
If there is someone who truly deserves recognition in the author’s life transformation, it’s his wife, Mariah. She’s a real gem. And I am very impressed by the author’s courage to share his life through this book. It was a well-written memoir that will serve as an eye-opener to many.
I’m giving this 5 out of 5 stars. This book is very informative, and it is bound to be a great tool of inspiration. The author used exercise for self-healing, and by sharing his life story, he will be helping other readers to heal too.
“TRIPOLAR: The Story of a Bipolar Triathlete” is a cognitive journey of Tim Davis that describes his struggle from being a mentally broken down drug addict and alcoholic being unaware that he was merely negatively self-medicating his bipolar disorder to eventually finding recovery and going on to being the person with 12 ironman and many other ultra-endurance triathlon completions. Tim Davis has provided the expressive approach towards sharing his experiences of his journey with the bipolar disorder, which set into his life from the age of 12; the age at which his expectations, to be part of a normal family, were completely altered by the effects of a trauma. Tim has taken the courage to engage with his audience to share his difficulties of drug addiction, alcoholism and dealing with his bipolar disorder. Despite being immersed into despair with severe drug abuse and mental illness, Tim enacted the reprieve of these adverse circumstances by incorporating triathlon training and psychiatric help, in order to develop sustenance of manageability over his disorder as well as channeling his energy into athletic trainings to coop from drug abuse and alcoholism. This book tells the events of the journey of Tim Davis, or “Ultra” Tim Davis, according to his passion for ultra-endurance triathlons. Tim details how he wasn’t really the type of person to pursue an active lifestyle. Drug addiction and alcohol abuse had held him back from life itself, along with suffering from bipolar disorder. After several rehabilitations, Tim was able to get sober but had become very obese due to the nature of the lifestyle he led. His was diagnosed by his doctor to be pre-diabetic and not highly capable of living up to fifty years of age. That was the wake-up call Tim needed. He vowed to permanently quit smoking, stop excessive eating and not taking any personal leisure from videogames or television before working out for at least an hour a day. He joined the local gym and lost over sixty pounds within six months. Tim analyzed the evaluative results of his progressive actions and started taking part in ironman competitions. He started participating in more and more challenging competitions such as full ironman competitions and ultra-endurance racing. Having scaled all of the tallest mountains in California and Mt. Whitney in forty-eight continuous states, his passion for fitness transitions from his love for living life to the fullest. He brings this book as an approach to help people find guidance and support to help them through tough times. Tim wishes to inspire people by displaying his own life journey as a practical example. He wishes his audience to challenge themselves for starting where they are, and aims for them to incorporate the lessons of his life, evaluated as a practical case study, into their own lives. Anyone who is going through or has been through difficult times, can find a unique relation to Tim’s journey in this book, which aims to enable the provision of inspiration through detailing Tim Davis and his recuperation from ill-habits and substance abuse, while managing to deal with bipolar disorder. I wanted to read this amazing book again just after finishing it once. Hats off for Tim Davis
Tim had a very difficult childhood and became addicted to alcohol and some serious drugs as an adult. His recovery is an amazing testament to the power of 12 step programs like AA, and the support and tough love of his wonderful wife Mariah. Mariah participates in Al-anon, a 12 step group for families of addicts, and it gave her the strength to support Tim through the bad times without enabling him, which involved painful and difficult decisions. The bad years are depressing to read about but important to give us an idea of how bad things can get. And it makes you realize how very difficult it is to recover from addiction. The 12 step program has to be very powerful indeed to give you the strength to do this. There is a happy ending because he does recover. But the main moral I got from the story is that you have to totally commit to the 12 steps, you can think you are working them but really “going through the motions” and that doesn’t work. There is an extra dimension to this story that makes recovery even more difficult: Tim was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder (formerly called manic depression). There are medications that control the symptoms but they have side effects. And sufferers can fool themselves into thinking they are cured and stop taking their meds. In Tim’s case, he finds a medicine that works well but the side effect is appetite stimulation so he gains a lot of weight. This is where triathlons come in. In an effort to lose weight, he gets physically active and discovers how much he enjoys triathlons. He eventually becomes an ultra-endurance athlete, completing multiple Ironman races, a double Ironman, and some very difficult ultrarunning events like the Angeles Crest 100 miler. It would be a mistake to think physical activity was a cure for bipolar disorder or addiction, but it was an important piece of the puzzle. Tim explains that recovery has mental, spiritual, and physical components and that he believes exercise helps with the physical. He now teaches about the benefits of exercise for therapy and recovery. I love comeback stories like this, and in this case, it was against almost impossible odds. Way to go Tim.

This is a comprehensive book for who are facing mental disorder. Tim Davis ideas, problems, and solutions are so simple and realistic. Every incident is well explained and the reader can easily understand their problems and their solutions. Experts analyzed and agreed that more than half of the world's people are facing mental illness. Some of them lose hope, feel vulnerable, give up, and leave this world. It is accepted that not everyone receives help as per their need. It is of utmost need to mention here that, this is a disease and can devastate anyone. Personally I observed that, in every society, there is the stigma attached. This stigma leads to unwillingness and feels embarrassment to pursuing help.
In this book, Tim Davis explained mental health with examples. He informed that mental illness should bethink as a proper physical disease. Because illness can affect the mind and every part of the body is interconnected with each other. If one part of the body hurts, then defiantly it will hurt others. The brain is a very important part of the body. If, it is ill and it will affect the whole body. If someone is in depression must read this book. He/she can get sufficient knowledge and gain experience to get rid of this disease. In the end, Tim Davis suggests suitable, sufficient recommendations for the patient. One may read can get a life. I have learned a lot and recommend for those people who are fighting this.
In this book, the wittier Tim Davis highlights how to survive when we lose everything in life. Those persons who feel pain, lose someone, must read this incredible book. I observed that the writer explained in detail that how to forget your past and to focus your present. It is said that time does not heal anything it just teaches us how to live with the pain. Sometimes we are not remaining calm while facing difficulties in lives. We do not think about our safety and the loss of our minds. We use different tools to rid out the pain. Sometimes we use drugs and different medicine. But I guess these drugs cause thousands of problems. Whenever we feel pain, we want to survive. Sometimes we fail to sleep. We face the loss of our relationships and cannot forget the death of our beloved one. By facing hard times, we lose our relatives, friends, and so-called well-wishers. Maybe sometimes, we face loss in our business and/or job. In nutshell, we feel pain and do not know who to survive. The writer guided the reader with different methods and techniques with sufficient ground examples to manage life in a decent way. The writer Tim Davis informed how to overcome physical and emotional pain. He suggested in detail how we can minimize our emotional pain i.e. by finding new hobbies, by observing yourself, stop telling hard moments to others, just forgot past moments, and live and feel joy in the present.

TRIPOLAR: The Story of a Bipolar Triathlete” is the life journey of the author. Tim Davis gives details about all the problems he was going through since his childhood. Tim Davis portrays his battle from being a drug addict. He has given the expressive methodology towards imparting the encounters of his excursion to the bipolar issue, which set into his life from the age of 12; the age at which his desires, to be a part of a normal family, were totally changed by the impacts of his sufferings. Time Davis is an outstanding author who has taken the fearlessness to connect with the people to share his troubles with drug addiction, alcoholism, and managing his bipolar personality. Despite being drenched into despair with serious drug abuse and psychological maladjustment, Tim Davis sanctioned and respite of these conditions by seeking help from a psychiatrist and by indulging into triathlon training, so as to develop good management of his weaknesses by directing his vitality into athletic training. This book tells us the occasions of the excursion of Tim Davis, or ultra Tim, as indicated by his power for ultra-endurance triathlons. Tim narrates how he was not the type of person to pursue his life normally. All sorts of addictions made him weak internally and did not allow him to live an active lifestyle. He gained a lot of weight and was warned by the doctor that was when he got.
I thank the author (Tim Davis) for writing this useful book. This is such a beautiful book that lays out the real reasons behind using drugs. In my point of view, in this world, many people use drugs to get happiness, solve problems for a moment, experimentation, celebrations, and get some sort of pleasure. By reading this book, I have come to know that, drugs don’t solve our problems. By using drugs leads to another problem in the body. A person who uses drugs is dependent on them and/or addicted. The body can have accustomed to having drugs and all parts of the body cannot work properly. Further, this book informed that the drug-addicted person can lose his/her interest in life, became negative, cranky, want to live alone, sleep a lot, and get in fights. On top of that, he/she cannot move in a positive way and to achieve targeted goals in life. In this book, the writer discusses all these expects and problems and comes up with suitable solutions. I want to share my own experience while facing several problems, I use drugs to cope with these problems. I guess, in life, we make mistakes and criticize ourselves. Some time it is very difficult to make decisions when we are broken and do wrong decisions. We fail to achieve our targeted goals and desires. After reading this book, I suggest everyone that we drug is not the only solution to cope with these difficulties. For a moment, by using drugs we can minimize our pain. In the end, the writer multiple suggestions to avoid drugs. He suggested that, focus your brain and use your creativity, find a healthy support system, use self-refection, try to find out different relaxation techniques, district yourself, focus on your positive emotion and always look forward. All these explained well and give the reader a life-changing lesson.
If you were in a running club, you’d want to be running next to Tim Davis. As he tells you a story, the miles would disappear beneath your feet.
Davis tells his account of a lifetime of addiction in TRIPOLAR: The Story of a Bipolar Triathlete. I received an Advanced Review Copy through Reedsy Discovery in return for an honest review.
In the beginning, it was drugs, but after much perseverance, Davis refocuses his compulsions on a more positive outlet: running, which turns into triathlons and ultra-marathons. Just reading about his misadventures with drugs and adventures with running will leave you out of breath. Imagine getting high during an AA meeting or covering more than 280 miles in a matter of hours under our own propulsion of one sort of another; Tim Davis tells how he managed both those audacious acts in his memoir.
He makes a compelling case for battling one’s demons with physical exercise. The first part of TRIPOLAR is about Davis’ experiences with drugs and alcohol. He describes the hell he put himself and his family through and how they tried and tried again to persevere together. He also describes how he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and how this diagnosis and his initial denial of it complicated his life. By this point in the book, readers will be rooting for Davis to figure it out. Eventually, he embraced the directives of a 12-step program and regular exercise to maintain his weight and mental equilibrium.
The final third of the book is about his spectacular achievements in the triathlon and ultra-marathon arenas. Davis undertook a heavy training schedule despite family commitments, a full-time job and vacations, and he participates in a number of epic events that will be probably be familiar to fans of triathlons and ultra-marathons. This part reads more like a sports story with a lot of statistics and exhausting details than a memoir, but other athletes of this sort will find these details compelling.
The version of the book I read also includes a few pictures of Davis’s races and awards, and those added to the value of his story. Davis’ book also includes training plans and a detailed injury-and-convalescence report, which will be interesting to other fitness aficionados.
While Davis’s writing is more tell than show, his story is inspiring, especially for alcoholics, addicts, those with mental illness, marathoners and the people who love them.
