An undercover MI5 agent has gone missing. It's up to Julian Mercer and his team to perform the recovery. There's just one problem. They don't know if the agent has been compromised or if he switched sides.
Agent Owen Shepherd was tasked with infiltrating an IRA terrorist faction. He's been in deep cover for two years, but now that an attack is imminent, he's vanished. While searching for Shepherd, Mercer stumbles upon the terrorist's plans. Mercer's new primary objective - stop the terrorist attack. His secondary objective - find Owen Shepherd.
In order to thwart the attack, Mercer will have to step into Shepherd's shoes to find out exactly what the faction leader has planned and how to stop it. But Julian's growing distrust of the Security Service makes him question everything, from the operation runner's loyalties to the real reason the missing agent went missing. Did the terrorists silence Shepherd or did his own people turn against him?

A long set-up to catch a terrorist planning chaos but the end is worth it alll! The R&K team is always deep into a dark and violent world but their ultimate purpose is to help the good guys. Their personalities didn't come through as much as in previous books so I felt it was a little flat or it would have been 5 stars for the intricate plot and action.
The team is brought in by MI5 to find a missing agent that went under cover and has vanished and to find out what the local faction leader, Colin Flynn is up to and if he's the reason the agent is missing. Mercer goes undercover and is at times cut off from his team while trying to get answers. It's difficult to infiltrate the Irish factions but he manages to do it because of recent events, some caused by Julian to shake Colin up, make him paranoid and willing to hire outside help. Owen Shepard, the MI5 missing agent has a sister that has also disappeared but they find her in Ireland and join forces. Colin has purchased and stockpiled the materials to make 12 bombs and some nerve gas to make a chemical bomb. With hi team and Lara Shepard, who is a retired MI6 agent they manage to save a tortured Owen , stop the bombings and make information available to law enforcement to gather the rest of the faction that didn't die in all the fighting and chaos.
I have read all 27 full length Alexis Parker books twice, and I have read all 10 Liv DeMarco books twice. I have read the Alexis Parker prequel series once. Julian Mercer and his team do show up in the Alexis Parker series. This is my first time reading the Julian Mercer series. Julian goes undercover in this book. It was really great. I do enjoy this author's writing.
MI5 believe Julian owes them for covering up his killing of Thomas Vogel, the former SAS operative who murdered Julian's wife. If he takes on this assignment , the slate will be clean and his dismissal from the service will be rewritten giving him back his former exemplary record. It's not the usual K & R mission, nothing straightforward about this one. An MI5 agent has infiltrated a dangerous IRA boss, having continued as an independent group of loyalists who disregard the Good Friday agreement. Now he is missing, his last to check one have gone without any contact from him, the MI5 cannot locate him, and fear for his life or worse if he has gone rogue. Owen Shepherd the missing agent phoned his sister Lara two days before contact was lost & she too has disappeared. Mercer and his team check her home & are fired upon by two unknown men. So off to Ireland the four go. From the start things don't seem right, their contact, Partridge appears to be hiding more than he is telling them. What documents they do receive have a lot of blacked out info. They come to the conclusion Flynn has discovered Owen's true identity, resulting in his capture & torture or death. Mercer decides it is time to take matters into his own hands - Flynn"a SUV is blown up as a distraction outside his pub and Julian used this time to break into his house. He finds a weapons stash in the basement & manages to copy the info from Flynn's laptop before he manages to escape Flynn's security guys & return to the teams base. The following night techies to Flynn's bar & orders a pint & a chaser, commonly known as an Irish Car Bomb. Flynn is outraged at his audacity & accuses him of rigging the car bomb. Mercer denies this, but implies he has information regarding the incident, pushing his paranoia further. Julian takes advantage of this , stating it's a common secret that someone is set to take him & his empire down. Needless to say Mercer ends up with his usual quota of injuries & damages the needlework on his half lung which is still healing. G.K.Parks has this uncanny knack of writing without hunting at what comes next - unpredictability is the keyword in the different series produced so far. So refreshing, as numerous authors find a winning formula and stick with it. Totally recommended, as are all books by this author. Now I have to be patient & wait for the next one.
I've just finished this series and am waiting on the nearest. G. K. Parks writes the best books about fighting off tut really bad people I that world. Non-stop action foe this small group of former military working to save the innocents. Love Julien Mercer, the leader of the group, who never fears risking his life, to make things right.
