G-rated, YA romance

Maddie and Peyton are high school seniors in this fake-dating romance.

My favorite part of this novel was Peyton, who is a highly sympathetic, quite poignant hero. Unfortunately, I struggled with Maddie, whose goal is to fake date Peyton to make her ex jealous. That would have been acceptable to me if she had simply been honest with Peyton and told him her plan, which is the typical way that fake dating is done in romance novels. But she is not honest and, even though she heavily repents and grovels at the end of the novel to make up for her moral lapse, it was difficult for me to like or respect her for most of the novel because of the callous way she uses Peyton.

If I were rating this novel based solely on Maddie, I would give it 2 stars, and if I were rating it solely on Peyton's behalf, I would give it 4 stars. So I have averaged the two and given this book 3 stars.

4.5 stars! Really the only reason this story didn’t get 5 stars is because of the fake relationship aspect. I have just read so many of these stories with that plot; it seems like that is a popular topic to write about lately.
I love Kylie Key’s books though and have read every single one. Her characters are well written and relatable. Her stories make me feel like I am back in high school with all the drama, new crushes, and friendships.
Maddie was dating Josh until he rudely broke up with her over text. Peyton was the new kid that could run faster than Josh. Maddie decided to use Peyton to get revenge on Josh for what he did. Unfortunately that didn’t work well for her in the end and she made some bad decisions in this story. I really liked the side characters as well and was glad that she had friends she could turn to.
Peyton has not had a great time in schools because of his birthmark. He was a great character and I could relate to him just a bit. I really enjoy the stories that have two different POVs so it was cool to read how Peyton was feeling about things.
Of course this is another HEA but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The ending was cute and really fit these characters. The little twist/thing you find out at the end was a little surprising but in a good way.

This story was incredible. The characters were super complex and had so many layers. I liked having both of their perspectives on the matter. I loved their attitude to everything. At first, I didn’t like Maddie much. She seemed a bit snobbish and rude. She grew throughout the novel though. She was the best version of herself when with Peyton. It’s a clean novel with a great plot. While it is a bit of a popular trope, Kylie added her own twists and turns to it.

This story follows Maddie and Peyton. Maddie’s been dumped by her boyfriend who she really, really liked. The worst part, it was by text. The day after she was dumped, she sees him with another girl. She meets Peyton, that very day, when she runs out of gas in the middle of the road. The first thing she notices is his birthmark which covers half of his face. The next day she learns that Peyton beat her ex in a cross country race. She decides to make her ex jealous by dating Peyton so she asks Peyton out.

cute story

It felt a bit rushed, and it was very PG, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Good, quick read.

This is book two of the River Valley High Boyfriend series and covers the story of Maddie and Peyton. Maddie has been in a relationship with her high school boyfriend over the summer break and into the first week of the new term. She gets a lift from Josh every day, to school and gets a lift home from a girlfriend. Josh is good looking and the fastest runner at cross country in his school. Everything has been going fine as far as she knows and although she doesn’t speak to him over the weekend, she hadn’t expected to, as he was away on a training camp.

He doesn’t turn up for her the next day, for the school run and she tries a friend to find out they are already at school. Running to get to school on time, she sees Josh getting out of his truck, with another female, a fellow runner. She thinks nothing of it, until she can check her phone later and finds he has dumped her by text, with no reason given. Her attempt to speak to him at lunch leaves her humiliated completely in front of all her friends and fellow students! She is devastated and finds out her best friend knew about the new development before her, but didn’t tell her. He has a new girlfriend already and is showing off right in her face.

There is a new boy in their year, one with a large birthmark on one side of his face. His name is Peyton and he avoids most people and wears a cap to hide as much of his face as he can. He is also a runner and tries out for the running club and at the next event, even manages to beat Josh, by a large margin. Josh shows himself up, by making excuses and even blaming everyone else around him. Not a great example to the younger runners on the team. Finding out about this, Maddie hatches a plan, ask this new boy to the Homecoming Dance, happening in a week or so and try to make Josh jealous!

Perfect plan for revenge, but not taking into account the hurt it may bring to Peyton, who has had years of turmoil and trouble at schools due to his birthmark. Kids can be cruel and at first he thinks she may be making fun of him, until a kiss changes everything. Unfortunately, someone spills the beans about her initial plan and things start to fall apart. As Peyton has learnt often, nothing is ever for real and a happy ending is not guaranteed. A story of young love and the feelings that can be hurt so easily, when emotions are in conflict at such an age. Using one person to get a rise out of another, to play against another, it’s all stuff that goes on in that age range, but is taken so much more seriously. Never a good idea to play with someone’s emotions in this way and how it turns out, you’ll have to read it to find out. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Spoilers.. thrown here and there in this review...

https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2020...

I read this book in like one day. Though I finish it at 1 am close to 2 am... this book I liked it. It was different, especially when it came to Peyton, not knowing about being a FAKE date for Mattie.

I felt bad for him; the only reason he found out was because of Josh. Though I think Josh hated on him. & wanted to make him feel bad about himself and have him thinking Mattie didn’t like him. She only wanted to use him to make “Josh” jealous.

When that is the TRUTH of it all, but Mattie ended up falling in like with Peyton at the homecoming dance. She didn’t care about Josh. After that, it was more so about Peyton. Even when she got her phone taken away from her, she was trying to find him. But what ends up happening was Peyton finding out the truth from her best friend, Bella.

I understood why Bella told Peyton; I would’ve too. I did felt bad for him. I also thought, 9/10, he probably was a handsome boy even though he had the “port-wine birthmark” from birth. People can be harsh and mean. I understood how he was kind of hesitant about certain things that were happening.

I also know her dad was going to like him since Peyton, a Bears fan..🤣 & her (Mattie) mom and brothers going to like him too. I wanted to see if and when he meet her parents and brothers, but that never happened in the book. But it was interesting to learn who Katrina was 🤷🏽‍♀️... and I see why his uncle Luke knew things that were going on in school since Katrina was Mattie volleyball coach. & wind up -dating Peyton Uncle Luke.... very interesting and Peyton learning who Katrina was, was priceless.

But one thing I can say I was freaking died laughing at the part about the burnt pizza that her brothers tried to make... that was the funniest part of the book. I cracked up so hard at that. & Mattie said she tried to laugh at what happened, but tbh I would’ve died laughing. Even though my mom would’ve been fussing and me ending up grounded. But Mattie holds her laughter, though!!!

Btw: I can’t wait to read the first book to this series I think it’s a Christmas book. I can’t remember 🤣🤷🏽‍♀️... but not only that, I can’t wait for the next two books to come out about Bella - “My High School Billionaire Boyfriend” and Tanchia, “My High School Quarterback Boyfriend”... I’m going to be on the lookout for those books.

I saw someone say the other day that they wished Goodreads would go to a thumbs up/ thumbs down rating system. It's books like this that make me agree. I don't know what star rating to give My High School Fake Boyfriend. It was a great read, but it was also a little cliche. At the same time, I expected cliche because this is a young adult romance with a fake dating trope.

Kylie Key is one of my comfort authors. I like to read her books when I'm feeling down or gloomy. Her books always have happy endings and I don't have to strain my brain to keep up with their plots.

My High School Fake Boyfriend is about a girl whose boyfriend dumps her. To get revenge she asks another guy to homecoming, but this guy has been hurt in the past and is skeptical of her intentions. Drama occurs and love is eventually found. My one main point of criticism is the ending felt flat. I feel like we should have seen a little more about what unfolded at their school after the final scene.

I read this book with a cringe because I knew Peyton was going to get hurt and that was terrible because he is sweet and already has a rough time. The only reason I ended up liking the story was because Maddie was not a terrible person. She was a nice person who made a bad choice but she also owned her actions and repented for them. I think it would have been better if she had just decided to go on a date with Peyton for real and left out the fake dating label and mindset. I also thought the way she treated her family seemed a bit of of character but maybe I just wanted her to be better than that and she was acting pretty typically for a teenager. Any way, I liked the resolution of the story and the characters overall.

A great reminder of what high school was like! Lots of emotions, great friends, bad decisions, dating and getting your feelings hurt. I loved each one of the characters.

Payton was born with a large birth mark that covered one side of his face. He also moved frequently, so he was always the new kid with the messed up face. Things haven't been easy forhim in his life.

Maddie is upset and hurt after her boyfriend broke up with her via text. She wanted to get back at Josh. In wanting to hurt Josh, she made a very bad decision that included Payton. Instead of hurting Josh, she ended up hurting Payton.

Kylie Key

How does Kylie do it? This book is so good. So sweet.

Maddie was dating a popular athlete and he dumped her like a sack of potatoes. She decided to get back at him by asking a boy to the Homecoming Dance that beat her ex.

Peyton had moved into the area for his senior year. He lived with his uncle and he was a runner. He had a big birth mark on his face so he was made fun of a lot. When Maddie asked him out he couldn’t believe it, like Beauty and the Beast.

Then story was so well told and I always love how Kylie has unique twists and stories.

I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. I enjoyed this story about Maddie and Peyton. She's been dating Josh all summer and it's been great. Now it's the second week of senior year and something is wrong. He breaks up with her via text. So she decides to get revenge by dating Josh's biggest competition, Peyton. Peyton is new at school and has a birthmark on his face. So Maddie is surprised when she finds she actually likes Peyton. The beginnings of a great HEA school year.

This was a very fun read, especially as the reader "watches" Maddie navigate her feelings for Peyton amidst the drama with her ex-boyfriend. It's very clever, and I loved the amusing twist toward the end of the book. I do think that the beginning was a bit of a slow start, and some of the dialogue felt a little mechanical, but this is a very solid effort and I would probably check out other works by this author. It certainly fits the genre, and I think the character building of Peyton really shines. A hero with a damaged past might be a little cliché, but it never fails to please!

Maddie was in love with Josh her high school boyfriend until she received a text message. It was from Josh saying he was breaking up with her. He gave no reason behind this so Maddie was confused as to what was going on. When she got to school, she saw another girl getting out of his truck.
Peyton is the new kid at school with a birthmark on his face that he tried to hide. He did not know anyone that attended the school. Maddie asks him to the homecoming dance to make Josh jealous.
Will Maddie and Peyton fall in love or will she go back to Josh?

Awwww, such a sweet teen romance!

Loved Maddie’s and Payton’s story, he’s such a cinnamon roll. Maddie’s summer boyfriend dumps her by text and she decides to get back at him by dating his arch nemesis who beat him at running, except things do not go according to plan. They go even better. An easy, page-turner of a read, loved the characters, the teen drama and the falling in love.

Recommended for lovers of clean and sweet YA high school payback romances.

A sweet YA read with all the feels. Maddie dates Peyton to make her ex boyfriend jealous, but her feelings for him become real. Peyton learns the truth about why Maddie is dating him and naturally is upset. Young love is never easy, an enjoyable story about looking beyond a person's physical appearance.

My High School Fake Boyfriend

I liked this book a lot. Kylie Key approaches many different topics in this high school series. This one Maddie wants to make her ex jealous and who better to do that the Peyton the guy that beat him in a race. The only problem what happens when she falls for him but he finds out he was a pawn being used to get her boyfriend back. Everyone thinks he’s a freak because of his birthmark will he be able to believe Maddie when she says she really cares for him.

Cute read with real characters. So refreshing that the love interest was not the perfect all American high school jock. How important it is to look beyond the physical features and see the person within.
Maddie learns to see Peyton not his birthmark. What may have started off as being 'fake' ends up becoming real.

First book to be read by the author Kylie Key. I really thought it was sweet, and romantic. I decided to give this read based off the synopsis and I am glad I did. I honestly felt like more could've been added to this story. However it was still a great read. I look forward to book 2..

Loved it! I read her first book in a similar style a few months ago ad thought, ‘I definitely want to read more by this author!’ This story was just as good as that first book. Very sweet, clean romance and I look forward to reading more in the series. Definitely recommend it!

super cute!

This was a super cute young romance. The characters ability to admit their faults and see people for who they are was refreshing. Maddie and Peyton were a dream and I loved how they came alive with each other.

This was a sweet book but definitely aimed towards teen readers. There were points that felt very angsty to me. It did have some valid points about body image being treated as more important than it should be and owing up to mistakes.

Decent story. Rather poorly written. Made it more authentic though, felt like it was really written by a high schooler😹 Super fast read.
