Gemma had a hard time figuring out what she wanted to be when she grew up. She worked as a film and television actress, a teddy bear importer, a department store administrator, a preschool teacher, a temporary tattoo artist, and a 900 number psychic, before finally selling her first book, Spying in High Heels, in 2005 and deciding to be a writer.
Since then, Gemma has written several mystery novels and been the recipient of numerous awards, including a National Reader's Choice award and three RITA nominations. Her books have hit both the USA Today and the New York Times Bestseller lists.
Gemma now makes her home in the San Francisco Bay area where she is hard at work on her next book.
Emmy Oak of Oak Valley Vineyards and Winery in Sonoma, Californina, is entering a new phase with her family business by hosting a wedding at her winery. Her best friend, Ava, is involved as well in the venture. Everything is lovely and looking up the day of the ceremony until the groom disappears as the ceremony is scheduled to begin. Someone saw a couple walking near the back terrace so Emmy heads that way only to discover the groom's body with a bashed head and a bottle of champagne nearby. Ava leads the way to begin investigating with Emmy reluctantly following and acquaintance, wealthy bad boy David Allen tagging along. Emmy's special friend Detective Grant tries to hold Emmy's sleuthing to a minimum but that never works. Emmy and gang have lots of leads to follow including former boyfriends, girlfriends, and parents. This is another winner in the Wine & Dine series with great characters, lovely setting and a mystery with lots of clues and suspects. I received a complimentary ARC from the author/publisher. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
Emmy Oak is just trying to keep her families vineyard from going bankrupt and is excited when a wealthy family decides to book a wedding at the Oak Valley Vineyard. She wants everything to be perfect but things go downhill quickly when the groom is found murdered just before the ceremony is to begin.
This mystery is complete with murder, romance and plenty of surprising and unpredictable twists. Marriage, Merlot & Murder is the fourth book in the Wine & Dine Mysteries but it could easily be read as a stand alone.
Gemma Halliday knows how to tell a story !!! I love her Wine & Dine Mystery series and every time I read one of these books, I fall deeper and deeper in love !!
Marriage, Merlot & Murder has main character Emmy Oak gearing up to host the very first wedding at her family winery, Oak Valley Vineyards and, of course, her best friend Ava Barnett is there to help. Emmy has done everything she can possibly do to ensure that the bride has the fairy tale wedding of her dreams and the bride, Juliet, is absolutely a princess. However before the bride can say I do and take the steps to her happily even after, the groom Freddie ends up late for the ceremony......and when Emmy goes looking for him, she finds him dead......and there are a lot of likely candidates for his murder !!
Emmy knows that she should leave the murder to her "kind of" boyfriend, Detective Chris Grant, but she feels really bad for Juliet so she figures she can ask a few people a few questions. Emmy also feels that the best candidate for Freddie's murder is Juliet's dad and seeing as he still owes her for the wedding that didn't happen, she feels this is her opening. Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of people that could have been the one to kill Freddie when Emmy finds out more about the bride, groom, their wedding party and their lives.
As Emmy and Ava dig into the groom and his past, they find a lot more bad things than good things and they start to really feel protective of Juliet. Even though they are beginning to be thankful that the wedding didn't happen, they want to find out what happened to Freddie so that they can help Juliet process things and move forward with her life......even if it might be the end of Emmy's !!!
I just LOVE the Wine & Dine Mystery series and I have to say I think that Marriage, Merlot & Murder has to be my favorite.....at least until I read the next book in the series. As this book is the fourth book and I have read the previous three, I have to say that I am a devoted fan and an invested reader and feel like a part of Emmy's life. Yes I know that it is fake and just a story....but when you are reading it you feel like it is real and you are right there along side Emmy in everything she is doing....even if it is just hanging out with Ava. Halliday has created a great cast of characters in this series along with a fantastic setting, the winery. I could read a story about Emmy and her life without a murder happening and Emmy and Ava getting in the middle of it....although it might make things less interesting when it comes to her dealings with Grant.
I highly recommend grabbing Mariage, Merlot & Murder, of any of the books in this series and grabbing a glass of wine or cup of coffee and settling back in your comfy chair and letting Halliday and Emmy take over your mind for a few hours...... you will totally thank me !!!
OK - for the record. I like these stories and will continue reading them. I like the characters, like the writing style, but for the love of all things holy, may we please have a book where Emmy does not get a concussion? Seriously! This is ridiculous - she gets knocked out, Grant finds her, says he'll take her to the hospital and she declines for lack of insurance. This time - he forced the issue. After 4 concussions, I'm thinking she's got to start meeting football players to discuss dealing with repetitive head trauma.
OK - rant over.
Fun story - and oddly, the second cozy I've read this week where the groom is the murder victim. Don't worry, men, it's fiction. You're safe! Emmy - with the help of her bestie, Ava - is hosting a wedding at her winery for a well-off soon-to-be couple and just before the ceremony starts...well - let's just say the groom doesn't make it. The bride is crushed and all the craziness within the wedding party comes out in spades. Poor Emmy - her winery is not a lucky place, but still sounds like a wonderful place to visit - and I don't even drink wine!
Naturally with another murder on her property, Emmy dives right into the mystery and tries to figure out what really happened. Fortunately, Ava and David were there to jump in and help. It's a fun cast of characters and Eddie is always good for a humorous touch!
I like how David Allen is turning into a regular and I think the readers will enjoy where that's going. This story touched a bit on some art and possible forgeries which made it especially more interesting.
I do enjoy these books and hope her winery starts doing better and can go a while without another murder on the property! I look forward to Book #5!
I greatly enjoyed the fourth book from the Wine and Dine series by my “Your the Top! Best of 2019” author Gemma Halliday. Emmy Oak is preparing for the Oak Valley Winery’s first wedding event in a decade, and she is cautiously optimistic. Although there were a few nail-biting challenges: finding enough flowers to create a floral fairy tale decor in the middle of winter, placating the sommelier when the groom requested a wine pairing with the lobster that may him cringe, and figuring what to do with an accident-prone winery manager. Emmy desperately needs this wedding to go off without a hitch or dare I say, a dead body! But...it’s a cozy mystery! The bride is deeply in love and marrying a man who seems unsuited. The bride’s father doesn’t like the groom, Juliet’s ex-boyfriend physically accosted the groom, the bride’s maid/groom’s cousin tells tales about the groom’s wayward ways, the groom’s finances seem to have suspicious origins, and the groom is witnessed ogling Ava, Emmy’s BFF. So, who killed the groom? Anybody.
Cheers! Gemma’s writing style is a favorite...clear and descriptive language, clever and informative, smooth and easy to read with dialogue illustrating tone and emotions and the various personalities from level-headed to emotional, from aloof to intense, from forthright to suspicious. The drama follows the traditional cozy formula that has made me a fan: intriguing setting, fascinating occupation, informative introductions, early on murder, personal imperative to solve the crime, a bit of peril, a bit of romance, a “Wow!” ending, and recipes...all here! However, I’ve invested my interest in Emmy and her endeavors, so I wish the murders, however deserved and karmic, were set somewhere other than her winery: in town? at Ava’s shop? a bordering vineyard? on a trip to a vender conference? She’s gonna to be unfairly known as Murder Central Vineyards...how can she survive that moniker?! I can’t wait to enjoy more! I highly recommend the series and starting with book four is fine, no spoilers. You’ll be hooked no matter where you start. And for a bonus...recipes! Gemma always includes a mouthwatering set of easy-to-follow recipes. I value the added Tips! for exchanges or techniques, Shortcuts!, and of course, the perfect Wine Pairings to make you the best sommelier you can be. Enjoy the Lobster Tails Thermidor set to be served at the wedding, Brie and Baby Spinach Omelet with Toasted Ciabatta Bread, Crustless Vegetable Quiche, Roasted Eggplant Mozzarella with Homemade Basil Marinara Sauce, French Onion Soup with Sherry, Maple Bacon Pancakes, and Brunch Sangria. Beyond yum! I see the need for a Wine & Dine Cookbook!
Disclosure: I received an ARC from Gemma Halliday Publishing. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
Marriage, Merlot & Murder is a delightful, fast paced cozy mystery that perfectly blends humor, romance, and suspense against the charming backdrop of wine country. Gemma Halliday once again proves why she’s a standout in the genre, delivering a story that is both lighthearted and cleverly plotted. From the very first page, the stakes are high as Emmy Oak’s dream wedding event at her family vineyard turns into a nightmare when the groom disappears and is soon found murdered.
Emmy is a wonderful amateur sleuth: smart, determined, and refreshingly relatable as she juggles saving her struggling winery while navigating a very personal murder investigation. The mystery itself is well crafted, with plenty of twists, red herrings, and suspects that keep you guessing until the end. Each character has just enough secrets to make them suspicious, and uncovering the groom’s not-so-innocent past adds an extra layer of intrigue.
The banter between Emmy and Detective Christopher Grant adds a touch of romance and wit that enhances the story without overshadowing the mystery. Halliday’s writing is sharp, engaging, and full of personality, making this an easy book to devour in one sitting.
As a bonus, the included recipes and wine pairings make this story even more fun and immersive. Overall, Marriage, Merlot & Murder is a charming, entertaining read that cozy mystery fans will absolutely love. It’s a perfect installment in the Wine & Dine Mysteries and leaves you eager for more.
The 4th book in Gemma Halliday’s Wine and Dine Mystery Series, Marriage, Merlot & Murder, does not disappoint. It has a great cast of characters, a suspects and a little bit of a romance. I really enjoyed reading it.
While these stories are pretty formulaic, the are also pretty fun. Certainly Emmy is no super sleuth, I don't think she's actually solved things without the perpetrator attempting to kill her afraid she knows more than she does, but that does not really detract from the fun.
The characters are getting better defined and I'm enjoying their interactions. The mystery itself was well done leaving my only partially knowing who did what. All in all, a fun read.
Starts with a murder at the wedding of the deceased. Then the story slows way down with the investigation. The ending moves much faster. Story takes place in and around the Oak Valley Vineyard. Great love interest between the vineyard owner, Emmy, and the investigating detective Christopher Grant. Besides murder and murder attempts, the story includes polygamy, art fraud, attempted debt collection.
Just the right amount of vapid. The mystery was solid and, despite having a hard time getting past the description of daily outfits, make-up routines and concerns about what a crustless quiche might do to one's figure, the story was good. It's an easy read and doesn't make you think too hard, which is just what I needed.
This series keeps getting better. There were a lot of suspects but I couldn’t figure out who the murderer was until the end. This is well written with enough suspense that I don’t want to put the book down. I can’t wait to read the next book.
I really like the main characters and the way they relate. Emmie is not an abrasive amateur detective but slips into detective mode mostly to help others. It becomes almost Lucy and Ethel at times but I've thoroughly enjoyed each of the books in this series. Great setting, good plot and a good trail to follow to solve the mystery!
WOW this one had a few surprising twists. I really thought I figured out who the killer was but I couldn't have been more wrong. Looking forward to the next book.
Gemma Halliday has hit it out of the park with another perfect installment in the Wine & Dine Mystery series. This book is everything a cozy mystery reader could want and more! A perfectly plotted mystery, complex but not too much, and it kept me guessing the entire time. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I am simply in love with every bit of Emmy Oak and her winery, her staff, and her friends. And definitely her detective. Of course her best friend Ava is back, along with the highly entertaining David Allen. The winery staff, Jean Luc, Eddie, Conchita and Hector, all perfectly cast in their roles. TEN stars for this one and I cannot wait for the next!
In this book, Emmy's Oak Valley Vineyard is the venue for a wedding. Plenty of interesting characters are involved including family, wedding party, and guests. After the groom-to-be is found dead, the back stories of these characters start coming out. Emmy just can't stay out of a good investigation, especially when it involves her winery.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher for my honest review.
Although I enjoyed each of the other books in this series, I think this one is my favorite yet, and don't be scared off, it does just fine as a standalone if you haven't read the others! If you like a fast-paced mystery that captivates from the very beginning, one that keeps you swiping the pages of your kindle, one that has amazing characters that make you feel like you know them, this is the book/series for you! Emmy Oak is such a wonderful character along with her best friend Ava and hunky Detective Christopher Grant. Unpredictable whodunit for any lover of cozies, this one is extremely well written, with plenty and twists and turns and is for everyone and anyone who loves a good, fun story which has a little bit of romance tossed in. No spoilers here, but the premise is there is a wedding to be held at the winery and on the wedding day the groom turns up dead. So, hurry and find out how this story develops, and meet the entire cast in this amazing 4th book of this series. I can't wait for the next book! Gemma Halliday is a writing ROCK STAR! I received a complimentary copy of this book and am delighted to provide my unbiased, unsolicited review!
A delightful addition to the Wine and Dine series! Emmy is trying to pull out all the stops in order to increase business at her family winery. She’s very excited to be hosting her first wedding there involving a very wealthy family. When it’s time for the ceremony to begin, the groom is nowhere to be found. After a lengthy search, Emmy finds him dead on her terrace. There is no shortage of suspects as it seems that many of the family and guests are holding secrets. Much to the chagrin of Detective Chris Grant, Emmy involves herself in the investigation. They are both trying to figure out their personal situation with each other. Unfortunately, every time they seem to be making progress they get interrupted. This is a very well written mystery that had me captivated from beginning to end!
Another great Emmy story! Poor Emmy has some terrible luck with murders at her winery! In this story, Emmy is hosting a wedding, but the groom ends up dead. With a mountain of unpaid vendor bills for the wedding, she hunts down the father of the bride for payment, but discovers the groom wasn't well liked, and the murderer could be one of many people holding a grudge.
This is a fun series, I love Emmy's amateur sleuthing, and there were some funny (or frustrating?) moments with Grant in this one.
I received an ARC for an honest review. This is a great series. You will really enjoy these fun mysteries and characters. Emmy is back along with her bestie Ava. Her winery is hosting a wedding. Exciting right? Well, the groom turns up dead and Emmy just can't help getting involved. With a really fun cast of characters and more twists than a tornado, you won't be able to put the book down. I sure couldn't. Love may be afoot for Emmy as a handsome detective is also on the case. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
Another wonderful mystery by Gemma Halliday! Emmy is hosting her first wedding and finds the groom dead on her terrace! She has to find the real murderer because the Detective in charge has decided the wrong person is guilty. Lots of twists and turns in the story with complex and interesting characters make this a wonderful read. I loved the book!I received an ARC from the publisher for purposes of an unbiased review.
In the fourth book of the Wine & Dine mystery series, we find Emmy hosting a wedding at her family's vineyards. Everything is going great until the groom goes missing and is found dead by champagne bottle. Once again, Emmy and Ava become the crime fighting duo of Detective Grant's nightmares. This mystery kept me guessing until the end. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I received an ARC from the publisher for my honest and unbiased review.
I count Emmy Oak among my favorite fictional characters. I drop everything to read every time a new book is published. Emmy, her staff and "her" detective are all wonderful characters. Marriage, Merlot & Murder really kept me guessing. This is another well written cozy from Gemma Halliday. If you have not yet discovered the Wine & Dine Mysteries, you need to do so immediately.
Emmy Oak is at it again! Her winery is the setting for a wedding that should help get her finances back on track. Of course, there will be the unforeseen issues that will come up to throw things off track. Gemma has a way of keeping g a reader guessing until the end with believable twists and turns. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
