Sarah Kraft has always been strong in magic, dedicating her gifts to bringing comfort to others. When her childhood friend is found murdered, however, Sarah is plunged into darkness. She soon becomes a target of the same evil, called upon to use her gifts in a battle she is woefully unprepared to fight.
Making matters worse, the only person willing to stand with her is David Fischer, heir to a centuries-old fortune that is somehow tied to the darkness hunting her. Sarah has never used her magic against such a dangerous enemy, but she is left with only one option: find a way to defeat the evil that is coming for her…
Or die trying.
**Bune is a full-length urban fantasy novel. It contains some darker themes (violence, death, grief, and betrayal) and adult language, but no explicit sexual content.**
She cringed as she placed her palm against the rough wooden door and felt its warmth. Five minutes left, it was clear this ward was going to take much longer to unravel and then reset once she was finished. Her gut knotted as she wasted precious seconds debating, frozen motionless. I am wasting time.
I really enjoyed reading this amazing fast-paced story. There were times when it was a little too depressive for me, but all in all this was a great read.
Absolutely loved this debut novel! Sarah was such a well written character. She had a great mix of inner light and determination and also compassion for people. David was was such a great show of how you can strive to be better and resolve wrongs that need to be fixed. Thoth, well I can’t say much on him or I ruin the intrigue. Let’s just say I waiting for the next book in the series and how this wonderful story will continue.
Amazing Urban Fantasy leading to internal turmoil for readers in the best way possible! This debut novel of Mariah Garell is excellent. I enjoyed the characters and really felt an internal struggle throughout the book in regards to how I ought to feel. There is a bit of mystery, suspense, and a lot of action. This is a great book for any reader who enjoys urban fantasy with magic and supernatural. The cover is quite pretty and alluring, but the story line is so much more than the cover alludes. I loved the complexity and internal struggles of the characters. There is loss and violence, yet there is no romance or sexual content. I know some readers struggle with books without romance, but I did not find myself missing this aspect. It was quite an adventure to follow Sarah's story. I look forward to reading more of this series and Mariah Garell's future work.
As is the avid reader's curse, I had 18,000 things pop up when all I wanted to do was finish this book, but... (much later than I wanted), I finally finished it!
That being said, I really, truly enjoyed this book; it was descriptive, intense, and just a little scary. I normally stick with high fantasy, so this was a bit out of my normal lane, but I liked the modern day twist to a paranormal/magic-y plot. I read this book in chunks (whenever I could find a free couple minutes), and it stayed with me throughout the day, with the little question in the back of my head constantly, "is she gonna make it?" I love books that make you think about them when you're not reading, it kind of extends the experience, and lets you live in the book a little bit longer.
This book. Scared. The. Sh*t. Out of me. And if there is a better recommendation for a story about demons and a journey through the Underworld, I don't know what it could be. Garell has written a masterful depiction of the things nightmares are created from, breathing life into terror in a way that will keep the pages turning in desperate need to see how it all will end. As a long time reader of dark novels, I cannot recommend this book enough. Take a deep breath. Open your mind. And shelter your soul. You won't regret it.
HOLY COW! What a debut. Gripping urban fantasy read from start to finish. I started reading it on Sunday and couldn't put it down to adult until I was done. Now I'm dying to know what happens next. A stunning example of world-building, intrigue and suspense. I'm completely hooked on Mariah's world and characters and I'm desperate to know what happens next. Also, THOTH IS MINE!
This was not what I expected. This was a thrilling read that kept me engaged and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Not something I have read before and the story was uniquely one of a kind.
I couldn’t put this one down after I started! Certain parts had me holding my breath while I read, and it was an excellent read overall. I’m not sure what I think of the ending, but I’m sure the second book will make me appreciate the new characters it introduced much more.
