A DEBT OWED

Midori drops her wallet on her first day of high school, but her new classmate Ichijo swoops in to help. She wants to thank him, but he’s part of a tight-knit trio and none of them are ever in class! Rumor has it that they all got expelled for acting up, and studious Midori’s actually at risk of expulsion, too… In order to help support her family, she has a part-time job, which is against the school rules. When the chairman of the school board catches her leaving work, he says he’ll let it go—but only if she’s up to the task of bringing the three boys back to school. Well, why not? It’ll be a piece of cake…right?

MANGA SERIES VIDEO REVIEW HERE: https://youtu.be/8EyhhnfVQaQ

VOLUME ONE VIDEO REVIEW HERE: https://youtu.be/WKGZE7y2Eeo

Updated Review 3/5/22: This was honestly even sweeter then I remembered! Gave me alllll the butterflies! Bumping up my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars!

Original Review 2/14/21: I really enjoyed this manga and I'm excited I have this book already on pre-order!

Out of the manga I have read by Nogiri, I feel this is her most "amusing" one yet as I chuckled/laughed at quite a few different places! It's fun, easy-going, and a beautiful story of friendship blooming.

It definitely gave me some That Wolf-Boy is Mine! vibes (I just finished reading that series before this one), but I feel it has a lot more originality then that one (even if it has similar "beats"). Not saying That Wolf-Boy Is Mine! isn't original (I LOVE that manga!), but I liked the "not-so-sweet boys" and how they all have different backgrounds. Plus, making Midori be there babysitter IS funny!

We have another kind heroine who tends to see the best in others and I absolutely love it! Nogiri writes such sweet heroines! I loved Midori's diligence and persistence in reaching these boys and how much it meant to her when she is called "friend." Also, the importance of family to her made me really happy!

Overall, this is a very solid first volume! It has been me wanting to read book two (even before I KNEW that cliff hanger was coming LOL!) and I'm excited for this hopefully will be romance!

Overall Series Thoughts:
I didn't realize the series wasn't finished (in English), so I guess I'll be waiting for the rest of the series! The first four books were cute and just easy, pleasant reads. (I think I still like the author's other series, Love in Focus, more, but that's the photographer in me.)

Content:
Fighting; A bully mentions about taking a MC girl’s clothes off as a punishment for eavesdropping (the other bully says “that’s dirty” and someone comes helps her before anything else is said or happens); Mentions of hot guys; A mention of suicide.

This is an "average girl and a gaggle of rich boys" story that starts with female lead Midori getting caught working at a bar and grill by her school's chairman. She needs the money because her dad left the family and left his debt with them (I guess this can happen in Japan?). The chairman makes her an offer she can't refuse: she'll bring three truant rich kids back to school, and he'll find her a more appropriate job that has his personal approval.

Of course they're all smoking hot, and of course she'd met their de facto leader before, when he retrieved her wallet from some dishonest guys.

Midori is a fun character, of a type I particularly like. She's hard-working and cheerful, tends to see the good in people before the bad, and has others' benefit in mind while not being a 100% doormat. The guys aren't quite as clear yet in this volume, but since I've read about halfway into the next book, I can say they do get a little more personality as things go along.

The art's quite good, in my opinion. I like it a lot when shoujo art can give us a good sense of place in what would seem like very simple settings like school, apartment, city street, etc., as well as showing the characters' inner feelings through evocative facial and body expressions. The body expressions in particular did well with absorbing me into the scene: students leaning on desks chatting with each other, working on a project together, and so on.

I was mildly surprised to see this relatively serious story not being one where the rich guys are bullies. It loses a star mostly because the author seems not to have a great handle on her leads yet, and puts Midori into sterotypical damsel scenarios so that she and Rei can interact with each other. 3 1/2 stars, rounded down. It made a good first impression, though, and absolutely has the potential to make its way into the four-star range.

As the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and Yoko Nogiri (That Wolf Boy is Mine, Love in Focus) certainly doesn't need to fix anything about her approach to the standard shoujo romance. Those Not-S0-Sweet Boys is fairly basic in terms of the genre - take one ordinary girl, add three hot boys with backstories of varying tragedy, mix well, and bake at 350 for an hour et voila - instant shoujo. But none of that is to say that this isn't an engaging, endearing story despite the way it sticks to the standards; in fact, it's the standards that add the very element of comfort reading that this book gives off.

Of course, Nogiri does play around within the confines of the genre, which also helps to make this fun. Nanami Mindori, our heroine, is no wilting wallflower, but neither is she too badass to be believed. Instead she's simply doing what she has to in order to keep her family together - her father left the family with a ton of debt, and now she, her younger brother, and her mother all do what they can to function. Nanami's determination really makes her as a character, and she steadfastly refuses to be bullied by the eponymous boys (who don't appreciate her new "job" making sure they come to school) or by the school chairman, who is definitely verging on using her situation to his own advantage. (Not in a creepy way, don't worry.) The girl's got chutzpah, and that makes her interesting to us as readers and naturally to two of the three boys. It's boy number three that we have to worry about in volume two...

Although the book hits on many of the tropes of the high school shoujo romance it does them well enough that it doesn't feel overdone. It's shoujo comfort food, and sometimes that's what you need.

Midori Nanami has financial difficulties since her father left the family without to settle his debts, so she has to go to school and to work, but this is against the school's rules. When the chairman of the school board finds out she works, he makes her an offer she can't refuse, she has to get her three classmates to come back to school and to get a test in exchange of his silence. The task is not easy but she gives it everything she has, will she succeed to keep her scolarship and to befriend those guys?

I was excited to start this manga, as you can see from the blurb the story isn't so unique but I fell in love with the characters nonetheless.

I liked the main characters, Midori is a sweet girl and the guys are all precious, even if at first sight they look like a group of thugs. Fortunately our heroine doesn't mind their exterior and try to find and to show to the world their true selves. Between Rei, Chihiro and Yukinojo I have my favourite but I'll keep it for me, I really wish they show their hearts more and more and I cheer for their happiness.

The art style is gorgeous, the dialogues are easy to follow and with that ending I can't wait to read next volume.

Thank you Netgalley and Publishers for providing me with a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a pretty solid first volume. I liked how there was a quadruple? love square, or rather, an implied one. It was very intriguing, and the ending only makes me want to read the second volume even more. I absolutely adore how the family dynamic played out with Nanami and her little brother too! However, I only wish we got to learn more about the boys and their backstories, especially about Rei's friends. Nevertheless it was still a very fun read that I hope other people will also enjoy!

*Thank you to the publisher, Kodansha, and to NetGalley for providing me with a digital ARC of this in exchange for an honest review!*

This was my first foray into manga after years of not reading it, and the more I read of this volume, the more I loved it. This story is a slice-of-life shoujo manga that follows our main character, Midori, as she unwittingly gets involved in the life of three boys at her high school, eventually becoming friends and maybe falling for one of them.

Midori's character was a really interesting shoujo heroine: she is the eldest daughter of a woman who became a single mum after the family father abandoned her, her daughter and her little son. Between the three of them they make do: the youngest son is in charge of cooking, and between the mother's full-time night shifts and Midori's part-time salary, they manage. Midori had gone through her own share of hardships, and this had made her a kinder person. I loved the way she was not naive or dumb just for the sake of being cute or sweet. She was perceptive, yet gentle, and she had the emotional struggles of a teen. When we see her develop feelings for one of the love interests, she can't identify them as romantic feelings immediately. I really liked this, as it felt very natural, and not at all like insta-love, which shoujo manga tends to fall into. Midori's relationships with the boys she meets start as friendship first of all, in a very platonic, everyday, school-classmate way. It's so nice to read how that evolves, over the course of the volume, into something that she finally starts recognising as romantic attraction. But this takes its time, and it's only at the end of the volume that it happens! It's nice to see a comic that takes its time building the connections between characters.

The boys were all very charming and nice people, all in their different ways. Their characterisation sometimes veered towards archetypal (especially Chihiro's), but it didn't fully fall into manga-love-interest stereotypes, and I ended up really loving them all for different things. The addition of a dog into the group was truly adorable as well.

Additionally, the adults (Midori's mum, the chairman of her high school, her work boss...) tend to be kind people, a refreshing take. I was ready for all the kids to not like their elders, because that's what edgy teens do... but not really. Even the three boys, who are textbook-edgy, have a very good relationship with Miyuki, the boss at the restaurant that Midori works at. We don't see a lot of complexity from them yet, partly because they have a pretty secondary role and partly because most of the story is told from our heroine's point of view. However, we are shown that there's more to them than we know just yet, so I'm looking forward to seeing them in future volumes.

And the art... my goodness, the art was beautiful. The use of screentones (halftone dots, shading) was masterful and it created a really tangible sense of atmosphere and setting. The technique really was at the service of the story, and it made intimate moments feel magical, delicate, and almost otherworldly. The lineart was also really soft and delicate: lovely hair is almost a guarantee with any shoujo manga, but on top of that, the facial and bodily expressions were so well-realised that they really conveyed the personality of each character.

I enjoyed the second half of the volume a lot more than the first one, where we dwell on the introductory details a little too long. At the same time, I recognise that it was a requirement to spend time developing the friendship between Midori and the three boys, and all the buildup started paying off in the second half. We were also left with some open ends and an understated but very interesting cliffhanger at the very end of the volume, which cemented my need to read the second instalment of this! I truly thought this would be a basic 3-star shoujo manga with more style than substance, but the characters and the handling of the plot were so well-done that they bumped my rating to 4-stars. Bravo, Yoko Nogiri! Really excited to read the next one and get back into manga.

I absolutely adored everything about this manga and I refuse to hear anything but positive things about it until the end of time.

This manga was uber cute. I definitely recommend this to my romance loving friends because even though we didn’t get an established romance in this first volume, I can definitely see the ground work for a sweet romance in the later volumes. I really love the art style in this volume and how each character is so distinctly unique. Also the storyline was cute enough to drive the plot forward and get Midori in some interesting situations. I really love the friendship that develops between the entire group and how they interact.

This is a really amazing first volume! I cannot wait to see what else happens in the series!

*More like 3.5 stars than 4.*

As if three cute boys on the cover wasn't enticing enough, this volume promises to be nothing but really fluffy cuteness filled with "how can you not expect my heart to miss a beat" (direct quote) and an endless exchange of meaningful looks.

There was a lack of depth here but the potential romance mostly made up for it. The character backgrounds delivered through dialogue added a layer to the 2D characters, so there was that much at least.

If anything, this had potential and a lot of promise. It wasn't breaking new ground but it also wasn't doing a bad job at what's already been done by many romance manga before.

ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

4,5 Stars

I’ve previously read both That Wolf-Boy is Mine and Love in Focus by Yoko Nogiri and I found both series alright, nothing special but nothing terribly bad either. But when I’ve seen that Kodansha was publishing another series of hers this year, I was really excited and wanted to read it so badly!

We are following Midori Nanami, a high schooler who manages to lose her wallet on the first day of high school but luckily, Rei Ichijo found it. They both meet each other once again when they end up being in the same class. But it’s been a week, and no one saw Ichijo or his friends, Chihio Goshima and Yukinojo Ieiri, at school. So of course, rumors such as they were caught smoking or they beat up people, start circulating around the school. One day, Midori is caught leaving her part-time job by someone from the school’s administration whereas students are not allowed to have a job, therefore Midori could be suspended and lose her scholarship which she terribly needs. In exchange for his silence about her job, the school’s chairman asks her to convince the boys to go back to school. As she tries to persuade the guys, she will realize that they are not as bad as everyone seems to think.

Even though none of her previous works blew me away, I’m always attracted to her manga because I’m in love with her art style. And Those Not-So-Sweet Boys is no exception! Therefore, I knew my enjoyment of the manga would play a lot on the plot.

I’m actually surprised by how much I enjoyed the plot and the characters. A group of guys starting a friendship with a lonesome girl dynamic made me think about Waiting for Spring (minus the basketball aspect)! But while the guys were trying to integrate the girl into their friends’ group in Waiting for Spring, in this manga, Midori is the one trying to stop the rumors going on around the school about them and make their classmates realized that they are actually nice people. It was nice that for once, the roles were switched.

We are introduced to the main character, Midori, a shy girl whose dad left her family with a huge debt to pay. She is working hard to help them and I liked that the mangaka chooses to portray the relationship she has with her little brother Kon. It’s really cute and I don’t think I’ve read a lot of manga with a big sister/little brother relationship or at least a normal one. Regarding the guys, so far, I really like Rei. He’s not your typical rich kid from what we have seen so far, I’m curious to discover more about him. The only character that we don’t know much about is Yuki since Midori didn’t really talk to him, but I feel like it’s done on purpose and that we will discover more about him in the next volume (which I can’t wait to read by the way!)

Quite an easy-going, enjoyable slice of life, shoujo manga.

One day Midori loses her wallet and then a couple of punks find it and want to steal the money inside it. That is until Rei claims it as his and since he comes from an important yakuza group, these guys don’t mess with him. Fortunately, he gives Midori the wallet back and from then on, she’ll have to do little tasks in order to keep going to school.

You see, Rei and his friends have been missing school due to a misunderstanding, but the chairman convinces her to deal with these three young guys in order for her to keep her scholarship, since her dad only left his family with a lot of debts.

As you might expect, Midori is the kind of sweet girl that sees every problem as a chance to be happy, to improve herself. She’s kind to others and can’t help but to adore small pets and her little brother. Truth is, she’s a likeable shoujo protagonist, and you instantly want her to be happy despite her naiveté.

On the other hand, we have 3 boys who seem like trouble but in reality they’re kind and cool because they just stand up for what they believe in, even if no one else agrees. Plus, they’re easy on the eyes and might become attached to Midori and her stubbornness to make things right.

I would recommend this if you want a heart-lighted reading. Up until now it’s just a regular slice of life but I wish we could see more depth into it as the story progresses.

Artwork: 5/5
Story: 4/5

Thanks a lot to NetGalley for giving me the ARC of this manga in an exchange for an honest review.
I don't know why but when I saw this cover I thought it would be a BL. Maybe is because of the 3 guys in the cover looking so good, but at first, I thought it will be a BL. And I was wrong! This is a normal drama/comedy shojo. I love this kind of story so much, to be honest. Our main character, Nanami, is a schooler poor girl, his father left the family with debt and her mum has to apply for so many jobs to get the family forward. But, Nanami works as well in a bar during the afternoons, something that is against the school rules. In order to not get rid of the school and her scholarship, she has to help some handsome rich guys. Maybe her warm heart can change them.
I really like this first volume, I love the characters and how they are with each other, the relationship of friendship between them. Rei and Eiri are my potential crushes and Goshima is my baby boy. I want the second volume so bad!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to send me the free first volume of this manga.I will give my honest thoughts about it so here we go!

I really thought the art style was clean just as much as it was on “The Wolf Boy is Mine”. In the story, we get three pretty schoolboys who were suspended due to them smoking on the school grounds and the female lead has to ensure they stay in school atw otherwise her scholarship will be badly impacted due to her working while still in school (apparently shes not allowed to work and study at the same time). The story isn’t really that interesting and it’s probably the fact I’m not really much of a harem reader. I mean its good for readers who are into the harem genre but I just couldn’t engage with the story enough. It’s not terrible but it’s reasonable like it is from the author of “The Wolf Boy is Mine” so it is somewhat of a unique treat!

Overall it’s not to my taste but it’s worth it for shoujo and harem readers!

I love these kinds of Manga. The ones where there are a bunch of misunderstood 'bad boys' who aren't necessarily bad who protect one girl. I eat that up, and this? This was all of that. Everything I expected and wanted from this manga.

Just when I was getting into this, it ended. Which obviously makes me want to read more and more of it. I need to see what happens with this chemistry between the main characters, and what kind of trouble they get into next.

Such an easy, light read to escape the drudgery of life. The artwork is absolutely beautiful too.

Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this manga in exchange of an honest review.

Midori works part-time to help her mom make ends meet, but her school doesn't allow their students to work without approval. When she's caught by the school's chairmen, he offers her a compromise. Get three of her classmates to come back to school (and keep coming back until graduation), and all will be forgiven. Midori agrees to do her best.

A trio of childhood friends, each with their own baggage, aren't too eager to have her meddling in their lives. But little by little, I'm betting she'll win them over. ::twinkle:: From the author of That Wolf-Boy is Mine!, Vol. 1 and Love in Focus, Vol. 1.

The typical manga I enjoy. A heart strong girl with optimistics views of the world trying to help three boys that struggles with some family issues. I adored this manga! Nanami was such a strong characters, and I loved her interactions with Ichijo ( I ship them so freaking much urgh) and her sweet conversations with Goshma!!! The only character that I~m still wary is Ieiri...because of what he said at the end of the volume...I'm tense.

This is a story were a girl is tricked into babysitting three high school boys cuz her family is in debt and she took a job (prohibited by her school) so her counselor is taking advantage of that.
I mean, there's also the beginning of romance, but c'mon there wasn't another way of starting a friendship between this girl and the three boys??

So this is a pretty average manga to me. I felt like there wasn’t anything exciting going on throughout the story. It is just volume one so of course the story will progress more, it’s just this one felt like not the best first volume to continue a series on.

Anyway we follow Midori who is a student struggling to stay in school due to being in debt from her father. In order to not get suspended she has to make sure 3 boys who have rumors going on about them attend school and make it all the way to graduation. The boys typically have a reputation because they missed school and are rich but of course they’re nice and have a heat of gold. I don’t know if anything really stuck out to me in this one but it just might not be my cup of tea.

There is a cute moment during the scavenger hunt I won’t spoil because I did find it to be a nice moment.

Midori gets caught in the despicable act of having a job and her school forces her to wrangle three of her ne’er-do-well classmates back to school. Naturally, they’re a close-knit trio of pretty boys and, once Midori enters their orbit, hormones are on the menu!

Ah, this is absolutely charming. I was a little concerned at the start, but it rapidly won me over with its characters. A lot of this rests solely on Midori’s shoulders - she has an amazing amount of spunk (Ed Asner would not approve) and I love her plucky ‘can-do’ attitude.

Even if Midori’s not the smartest protagonist ever (she has some really bad ideas about attractive people being nice), she will stop at nothing to keep her family out of the debt left behind by her dad (dad debt is one of the weirdest shojo tropes, I swear) and her dedication to her family helps push her forward.

The titular boys are introduced when head boy, Ichijo, comes to her rescue over a lost wallet. This is smart plotting, showing his good side, since he spends a solid half of the book after that being what I would charitably call an impudent twerp. It turns out there’s good reason for this (good DRAMATIC reason), so I will allow it.

Still, the relentless nature of Midori can only be held off for so long and soon she’s dragging them kicking and screaming into a more rounded school life. Presumably the other two boys will get a bit more fleshed out later - although I admit I’m intrigued at the possibilities laid out by the ending of the book.

It’s all very fluffy and it might not reinvent the wheel, but it’s dressing that wheel up pretty well. There are more than a few tropes (see below) and things that will make you think of other series, but it carries itself well (again, Midori is no wimp and that alone counts for a lot). When she stands up for herself against Ichijo the first time it is probably the best scene in the book.

I do think the ‘Midori is in sudden peril and gets saved last second’ story beat is trotted out a time more than it should be in a single volume. Also the boys basically teleport to save her at least once. The other time is all on Ichijo, which makes sense since he’s pretty much assured to be the love interest.

Mix in a bunch of the tropiest tropes like sports day injury (I swear manga heroines get more leg injuries than I do and I run marathons), visiting a sick person at home leading to aww, hopeless cookery skills, aforementioned debt, etc, and you have possibly not the most original work out there.

3 stars, 3.5 once it hits the gas and really gets going (I do love Midori’s plan to get the boys to midterms). I couldn’t really round something this by the numbers up, but it’s tempting. Some days you don’t want haute cuisine, you want some nice fast food that’s nothing new, but tastes cozy and familiar, and so far I like what’s being served up here.
