Lara McLeish, a trained fighter for the New Bloods, a werewolf clan in New York, has come across an assignment that’s got her rattled to the core. Not used to taking the diplomatic route, she has been tasked with forming an alliance with a clan in Scotland. Finding herself on the next flight out, Lara meets the most unnerving werewolf she’s ever met.
Cameron Fraser, the were behind the clan, is used to getting what he wants, whenever he wants it, but Lara is proving to be more difficult than he hoped. Welcoming her to fight alongside his clan, the question becomes whether he can keep his motives pure enough to see the bigger picture: an alliance of two clans.
Scottish Alliance introduces a fascinating strong protagonist in Lara, a fearless werewolf vampire hunter. This 30-page work is not a complete story arc, but rather a beginning to a series. Ms. Shepard does a wonderful job of setting the stage for what is to come, leaving readers wanting more!
Don't waste your money or your time - This author solicits review swaps like it's her full time job. This is not a book. It's not even a story. In approx. 10k words there are three scenes and no ending. This story is poorly written and a total waste of time....The story has no ending hoping you will spend another $2.99 to read her second worthless rag.
The author works very hard to solicit reviews. He/She stalks other authors in Facebook writing groups. She/He solicits writers to swap reviews. She will write a review of your book and post on Goodreads, then ask you to purchase her book and write a review.
She will not post her review on Amazon, because she never purchases her victims books.
Ask yourself how a crappy book can get more than 100 reviews when the book is nothing but a jumble of words that doesn't even tell a story.
If Jennifer Shepard asks you for a review swap...run away!
I’ve never read any vampire & werewolf stories before so I was excited to read this. The author did a great job of setting up this story. I can’t wait to find out more about Lara & Cameron.
🐺BOOK REVIEW / “Scottish Alliance”/ Jennifer Shepard🧛🏻♂️ ___ 🐺Genre: Fantasy Pages: 30 Language: English Release date: 2020
🐺Reading this book was like sitting near a bonfire with a couple of vampires and werewolves. Your role is a sort of parliamentary. But one wrong word can cost you life.
🧛🏻♂️The Plot: This is my first book by this author, and I’m so happy I bought two at once. It is written as a serial, so having finished reading the first one in one sitting, I definitely got hooked and wanted to read what would happen next to stunning, brave, and fearless Lara McLeish. She is a fighter who works for the New Bloods – werewolf clan in New York. The clan's boss charges Lara to go to Scotland to sign an alliance of two clans that is supposed to help them in a big upcoming fight with vampires. Meanwhile, being an envoy to an unfamiliar place brings many dangerous surprises and reveals the things Lara doesn’t expect at all.
🐺The Writing Style: I can describe the writing style of this author in one word – BRILLIANT! Still, I have to be more specific to make you interested in. Well, it’s written masterfully at a galloping pace with a lot of intense episodes and sarcastic humor. I’ve not read two stories in one sitting recently. But this one was so addictive and intriguing that having put down the first one, I opened the second one immediately.
🧛🏻♂️The Characters: The number of lead and minor characters isn’t numerous. All of them were depicted so detailed and perfectly in all the senses that I felt myself in a skin of a werewolf that can't wait for night to turn into a wolf and to hunt in the woods, and, like a starving vampire that feels lust for the blood.
💙Would I read other books by this author: Absolutely yes!
4.5 stars, rounded up to 5. A quick review for a quick read... This book a super fast and easy, 26 must-read pages to be exact, and it took me less than an hour to devour it. It’s also available on Kindle Unlimited, so if you subscribe then you really have no excuse, read this book!! The main character of Scottish Alliance is Lara; a werewolf with precise and deadly fighting skills. She has quite the story to tell. I feel like the book as a whole was only a nibble (if that) of the story that Lara has to tell. It read like a prequel to something really freaking awesome in the works! I hope that’s the case too, as Jennifer Shepard clearly has a natural talent for storytelling! The one and only reason I’m giving this book a 4.5 rating rather than a 5 is because I felt like it was TOO short. I would have liked this nibble for Lara’s story to more of a mouth filling bite at least. Here’s a quick run down. Lara was born and has lived her whole life in New York City, fighting Vamps, of course. She works for an organization of wares, and is the best there is. Her boss calls her in with a task that is completely out of the ordinary. She’s never left the city that she loves nor has she ever had a desire to. So when he sends her to Scotland to lead up the forming of an alliance with the wares overseas… she’s shocked. She jumps on a plane right away, there’s no looming it over. It is what it is, and she’s a soldier. The flight is long, and when she arrives she’s taken straight to the big guy in charge. What he tells her isn’t at all what she could have ever expected, and the journey ahead is bound to be a bumpy ride… Now let’s all just wait and see what J. Shepard has in store for Lara. I have a feeling it is going to be utterly unforgettable!
This novella is a precursor of dangerous times ahead. The author sets up the protagonist, Tara McLeish, from the very beginning. She is a no-nonsense werewolf in the clan called New Bloods in New York. From the beginning, Tara is a brutal Were, strong willed, and will not be dominated. I had a good sense of her personality immediately and read on with great anticipation.
Shepard has a unique writing style that also pulls no punches. The story moves along at an incredible speed, though smooth. From the first chapter, we know much of what we can expect from her characters as far as a set-up for events to come. That includes the secondary characters as well. Shepard well-defines each character’s personality.
This author is truly comfortable in her writing style. It is clean, lean, mean, and fast moving, just what is needed to help the reader look forward to her future stories. If there is a series to follow, her books will be gobbled up.
Sheppard's first salvo in what should prove to be an exciting and innovative tale establishes the character of the protagonist, Lara McLeish, a New York based werewolf doing battle with vampires.
McLeish, who hates to travel, is assigned to form an alliance with werewolves in Scotland. Once there, she is confronted by the Scottish leader, a formidable character who rattles the usually unflappable McLeish.
Scottish Alliance by Jennifer Shepard has all the makings of a popular novel series. Think Harry Potter but with Vampires and Werewolves. It's clever and exciting right from the beginning. The blend of NYC and Scotland evokes intrigue just with the location alone and leaves the reader excited on how the author is going to expand the story in these settings. I would definitely encourage Shepard to keep plotting out this story because it will be the first of many in a successful series.
A quick introduction to the Scottish Alliance series. Lara comes across as a strong, independent character able to tackle anything. Flying across the globe from New York to Scotland she's set for a battle. I'm intrigued and interested to see where this story goes, because I love the paranormal world.
Placing her story amid werewolves, vampires and the like Jennifer gets the reader hooked from the first chapter. I liked the protagonist Lara who is strong, complex, and multi-layered. A short and thrilling read.
The only problem with this book is it is too short. I would call it more of a precursor to what looks to be an amazing book. Lara is an interesting character with a great strength to her personality. She needs that because she is headed to Scotland to fight with the werewolves against the vampires. Great idea for a story, can't wait to see if this author brings out a novel.
This story sets the tone for future novellas in the series. The paranormal characters are interesting and the bond that they share is what makes this book intriguing.
A solid start to a story that hints at excitement to come. Reads with a nice flow and the creation of a nice dynamic between the main characters. The next segment should prove to be interesting.
This short story gripped me from the start and didn't let go. I loved the setting and the characters, and the writing is sparkly and vivid. I liked the fight scenes and the instant tension between the heroine and the mysterious man who claims she is his fated mate. I look forward to reading more about them!
This author has potential. She has the beginning of a good story, and she creates interesting characters. That's as far as I can praise this book, however. "Book" isn't a fair word for Scottish Alliance, because I got a 5000-word sample rather than a complete story. I paid 4.99 CAD and got 29 pages with little rising action and no conclusion, so this doesn't even qualify as a short story. I guess if I want to find out what happens next, I have to pay more money for the next installment. However, I won't be doing that. This overpriced work needs serious editing, with missing words, incoherent sentences, tense shifts, and wordiness throughout. Despite that, the author was able to get the image of her setting and characters into my head, which is why I say she has potential. However, she could use the assistance of a writing coach and should finish her story within this volume. I'm all for a book series, where one book leads into another and the reader can learn more about the characters in a new volume, but each book should contain a complete story and not leave the reader saying, "Where's the rest?" I feel ripped off with this purchase and won't be seeking any more from this author until she learns to finish what she started. One star for the book—one more because the author could make a good thing of this if she puts more work into it. I wish her the best as she improves her craft.
Scottish Alliance grabs and holds your attention from the first scene when Lara somersaults off the roof in the second paragraph. It sets up the well put-together plot-line that keeps you wanting to know more. Jennifer Shepard brings to life the ages old battle between Lycan and Vampire with a new twist on the modern clans and a new age of Vamp called "The New Bloods". The action travels from New York city to Scotland where a new intrigue is thrown in, in the form of a Chosen partner. Our heroine is taken aback at this hinted upon revelation by Clan leader Cameron Fraser which Lara brushes off. I feel this story is the precursor to a larger adventure and I can't wait to read it. Or anything coming from this Author will be a welcome addition to my bookshelf. I highly recommend this story to everyone that's looking for a great read.
Whet your appetite for a werewolf vs vampire fight
So far this isn't your Team Jacob or Edward heart-torn "Sophie's Choice," but with only 29 pages and three chapters, that's yet to be determined. I suspect more salivating installments are in the works so we can sink our teeth in deeper.
New York vampire hunter, Lara, is the best kickass werewolf around and newly appointed liaison for a werewolf agency, a position which lands her in Scotland. But what is her supervisor Titus Black really up to, sending her there?
Staying at the covert Scottish headquarters disguised as a church, Lara settles in yet an unsettling intuition prickles her nerves. Especially when she meets boss man, Cameron, whose virility-- and startling secret-- trip her switch. And spying on the agency's attack plans raises the hackles of suspicion even more ....
This is a juicy story just beginning to simmer. I enjoyed the latter half best because there was more intrigue and dialogue. We get a more personal glimpse and I feel for the characters more when there is interaction rather than long blocks of description and narration. I look forward to the rest of the story and hope one day this is a whole novel altogether. In the meantime, it's fun to read a few quick chapters.
I haven’t read stories of vampires, werewolves, and witches since I read Anne Rice novels a while back. When I bumped into Jennifer Shepard online, I was able to reacquaint myself with the genre. Scottish Alliance may be a short story, but it reads more as an introduction to a novel. We’re introduced to Lara McLeish—a werewolf and an assassin who works for a secret organization that operates in the sub-basement level of an abandoned warehouse in New York City. The set-up is reminiscent to certain action movies (and novels) where hidden organizations have their headquarters built underground while using ordinary and unoccupied buildings as facades.
The first few pages has McLeish fighting a vampire—a scene that shows her fighting skills and abilities. The rest has her meeting her superiors who detail the rest of her mission. I won’t write anything else about the story—considering that it’s short and I don’t want to give away any spoilers. However, the ending of the story does not have closure, but is open-ended. As mentioned earlier, there’s clearly more, and it would be interesting to know what happens next.
For centuries werewolves have kept the vampire population thinned by hunting and eradicating them. Lara McLeish is very good at hunting vampires. She prefers to stay in familiar territory, so it comes as a surprise when her superior, Titus Black, asks her to travel to Edinburgh, Scotland to form an alliance with the Scottish werewolves.
Lara has reservations about this union, but she does as Titus asks and travels out of her comfort zone. There she meets Cameron Fraser and realizes that things are about to get crazy—both personally and for the werewolf population around the world.
Scottish Alliance is a great start to a promising new vampire/werewolf series. I had grown tired of this genre and hadn’t read anything to do with it in a while, but J. Sheppard has drawn me back in. Lara McLeish is a tough but likable character, and I will enjoy spending time in her world. The story moves fast and the suspense amps up ending on a cliff-hanger that will have you rushing to get the next novella in the series.
The story opens with Lara, a tough as nail werewolf taking down a vampire that seriously underestimates the feisty woman. Just in that encounter, the reader starts to get a great snapshot of the not to be toyed with, no nonsense, best in the business Lara. That scene sets the never missing a beat pace as Lara’s story continues, as she is immediately sent off from New York to Scotland for her next assignment. We quickly warm up to her too because we know somehow she can handle herself no matter how tight of a spot she gets trapped. The author packs an enormous amount in this short story, and the only part that disappointed was it ended too soon. However, it’s a fantastic start to what feels like a full- length novel with the intriguing Lara and then the introduction of the mysteriously handsome Cameron. I’m looking forward to see more of Lara’s and Cameron’s story!
This was a really quick read - less than an hour. This story, which felt more like a prequel, centers around a werewolf named Lara who's life ambition seems to be hunting vampires. She's devoted to her clan and her work but an unexpected trip takes her out of her comfort zone and she ends up in Scotland where she meets the mysterious, handsome Cameron Fraser. The story ended rather abruptly which is the only reason I'm giving 4 stars and not 5. I would love to know more about Lara and Cameron because this story really felt more like a teaser of what's to come with these two. Overall, I enjoyed the story, I just wish it continued on further, or at least had a little taste of what's to come next.
This short story had potential to be good. In an already crowded genre of werewolf/vampire fantasies, nothing sets this entry apart from others. Maybe if the characters were better developed with distinct idiosyncrasies, or if the plot wasn't cookie cutter in its formulaic nature, I could say "wow" this is really good. But I can only say it's okay because it didn't reach its potential to be really good. It's a short story and I'm sure the author has a series planned with the same characters. My hope is that improvements are also in the plans.
A story that gets you in and leaves you definitely needing more!
For a very quick (20-25mins) read, this sure does pack a lot into it. Great start in getting to know Lara and who she is and what she does. A very intriguing character, taciturn and very aloof in her manner, but obviously highly trusted and extremely competent. Also, a great ending, leaving the reader, wanting and needing to know just what is going to happen next. In all honesty I, as an avid reader, would much prefer longer sequel(s) for the continuance of this story. Five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars for a new and interesting read that leaves you looking forward to the next instalment.
jennifer Shepard is a new author to me - but that's going to change. "Scottish Alliance" is a fast-paced, excellent read. Compelling and gripping, Ms Shepard keeps the pages turning with consummate skill. Written with great economy and clarity - a rare talent - you always know where you are, you always know who's who, and you always want to know what's happening next. You'll rip through this. Then you'll read it again . Wholeheartedly recommended.
Science fiction and fantasy are generally not my preferred genres. However, I can say that I was completely spellbound by Jennifer Shepard's heroine, Lara McLeish. She possesses everything a great heroine should possess: strength, courage, resilience, and an air of mystery. Scottish Alliance is a quick read and captivates the reader with its fast pace and unpredictable storyline. Ms. Shepard kept me engaged and I was sorry to see the story end so abruptly. I wanted to read more. As a romance writer, I was intrigued by the build up of a romance between Lara and...Who? Guess I'll have to read the next in the series to find out who.
I haven't read a book for pleasure in 60 years. This novella was a great start. The writing style is engaging and left me wanting more. However, I was glad it was a short story. The title character Lara is very likable and very mysterious. It appears she possesses some special awareness that enhances her ability to be a badass vampire slayer. Lara is sent from her home in New York City to Scotland to make an alliance. There is an undercurrent that the real reason she was sent may not be what her boss leads her to believe. A conspiracy that may lead to her fall from grace, or the demise of her kind.
I give this story three stars even though I'm not a fan of werewolves or monsters or any kind of supernatural stuff. But I think had this story been about a girl from New York instead of a werewolf it could have been an above average read. Another reason for the three stars is character development. I don't know anything about werewolves so the author needs to educate us unknowing readers. As a begining author I think Jennifer is on the right track and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.
I don't generally read much in the vampire/werewolf genre, but I found this to be a compelling story. It isn't really a short story, more of a three-chapter prequel to a novel. The story promises to be interesting, when it's finished. Lara McLeish shows promise as a strong female lead, and it will be interesting to see how she handles the more intricate plot that's only just touched upon here. The story needs editing. As it stands, the mistakes and awkward sentences get in the way of the story itself. But that's all fixable in the hands of a good editor.
