Language In Prehistory is a tour through the academic world of proto-language and all things symbolic leading up to the acquisition by early human beings (quite which ones being a matter of guesswork) of full language. This is quite a scholarly book with not a huge amount for the general reader, but I did enjoy it, especially towards the end as the author got into matters mythical and storytelling. The conclusions are fascinating and the whole book thought-provoking. A bit advanced for me, but I’m glad I read it.

Language in Prehistory is the third and final book in Alan Barnard's trilogy on social anthropological approaches to the study of human origins. Focusing on the evidence for the origins of language as well as the implications of a fully-formed language on human cognition and social organisation, the book marks a nice ending to the theories proposed in the first two books, "Social Anthropology and Human Origins" and "Genesis of Symbolic Thought". As is typical of Barnard's books, the majority of the book is spent on more or less connected theoretical musings, touching a wide range of subjects without ever quite seeming to reach any firm conclusions. This can make for a rather frustrating read, as the author moves from subject to subject without it ever feeling as though he arrives at a concrete point. The first half or so of the book is primarily set-up, then follows several chapters containing the somewhat meandering main theoretical discussion. At the end of the book, though, in the summary and conclusion, Barnard delivers the main findings of the book as well as his own thoughts on the origins of language, and it is here that the book comes together and truly delivers. As with the first two books in the series, it requires a bit of patience to get there, but the pay-off is considerable enough that the book feels like a satisfying conclusion to a really interesting theoretical series.
