The Villain and the Cannon Fodder’s Mother

Rate this book
Right after getting the first-class chef’s certificate and before that certificate had been in her hands long enough to warm up, she woke up. Not only did she age ten years, she also gained two children…

At this time, her new daughter, who had lost two of her front baby teeth and spoke with a lisp, pointed at the TV screen and called out, “Dad!”

On the screen, the Film Emperor Meng Yan was extremely handsome and charming. Towards the camera, his gaze was overflowing with gentle and tender feelings. He raised up the hand that was holding hands with a captivatingly beautiful bride. She was wearing a diamond-beaded wedding dress. At the bottom of the TV screen, the headline news was displayed in large font – Meng Yan and the rising starlet’s wedding of the century.

T/N: The second part of the summary is misleading. This isn’t a novel where the transmigrated main character clings onto the film emperor’s thigh.

3.5 rounded up. The characters are a definite 4 stars. They're fun, full of personality and not too typical in this kind of theme. The plot, though, is 3 stars. There's not much of one, more of slice of life, which is okay. The romance is also just 3 stars. Literally nothing happened until the end. We didn't even get a kiss. It's fairly cute but a bit bland. Hence it's 3.5 overall but I enjoyed it enough.

BEWARE of SPOILER

Lin Yiyi took over as the mother of the villain (Meng Yuran/Lin Yuran) and the canon fodder (Meng Shanshan / Lin Shanshan) in a novel. According to the original plot, her son, will fall in love with the female lead (Zhang Xirou) while her daughter, will fall in love with the male lead (Lu Mingzhe). As in every other story, the male and female lead will end happily ever after while the rest will fade into oblivion under cruel circumstances.

Lin Yiyi was married to a top actor (Meng Yan). She was obsessed with him and even after the divorce, she used every means possible to be with him, even at the expense of her two kids. Her ex-husband remarried a well-known and much younger actress (Zhang Xiying) and Zhang Xiroud happened to be Zhang Xiying's younger sister.

Lin Yiyi's passion was cooking and because the original Lin Yiyi had tons of money, Lin Yiyi decided to live a leisure life and at the same time, helped her two instant kids to avoid meeting both the leads.

The story was light and warm. More of a slice of life. The romance was slow as Lin Yiyi never wanted it in the first place. And the other reason because the guy pursuing her happened to be Lu Mingzhe's uncle.

Nothing much exciting happened just a face slapping of the ex and his new fairy tale wife. The excitement was the predictions of things to come that the transmigrator worked to prevent. The story was too dull the last hundred pages. The interaction of the children and food descriptions were comical. Gave it 3.5/5 for the kids.

1. Professional chef transmigrates to body of rich divorcee obsessed with ex-husband. She decides she wants none of that shit and starts to get attached to her kids instead. The kids, who were originally supposed to be pitiable antagonists in the story, decide to cozy up to their newly improved mom. Her cooking skills also attract the foodie uncle of the future male lead. Slice of life shenanigans ensue.

2. This is not a plot-heavy story, and what little plot there is gets overshadowed by all the non-plot scenes featuring the characters. This is because the characters are very sitcom-like; deeply chaotic and funny with genuinely interesting connections with each other. This makes the entertainment-circle finance stuff feel both out of place and boring.

3. The romance is really cute. It's a slow burning relationship, made all the more slower by both the ML and FL being really, really inept at both identifying and conveying romantic interest. It's glorious. They are both so smart and yet so deeply dumb. Truly a match made in heaven. I love them.

4. The supporting characters are all wonderful. The FL's mom is a domineering delight and her relationship with her husband is both sweet and funny. The ML and his nephew are a two person comedy act. The FL's kids are both adorable and funny. Meng Yuran's food-mooching friends are great too. It's just- all so sweet a wholesome. Sigh.

5. The prose is really funny too. Often very matter-of-fact and tongue-in-cheek, finding humor in fairly normal character interactions and reactions. I just really love in when the narrative manages to set the stage like a sitcom. Little things like the repeated comments about how "Meng Yuran was not happy but his face was always like that so nobody noticed it", Meng Shanshan's foolishness (Which is mostly her tendency to abandon any common sense the moment food enters into the picture. Same girl, me too.), the repeated comments about who the real head of the family is and how everyone behaves in order to please her, the never-ending rivalry between the boys even to the point where they shoot themselves in the foot to one-up the other, Lu Xun's ongoing distaste for expressionless faces (which he passes on to Meng Shanshan), and the running gag of Lu Xun being just terrible at romance because he's too focused on food. Honestly, him and Meng Shanshan were born to be dad and daughter.

6. All of these tiny character details may not have been very important (or important at ALL) plotwise but they went a long way into making me feel attached to the characters. They are all hilarious messes. I love them all.

7. So anyway, I had fun is what I'm saying. Don't come here if you want plot or drama or emotions. But I had so much fun with the fluff and the comedy.

At first, I was a bit skeptical about this novel but I finally gave it a try. And truth be told, I quite liked it!

The best part was the comedic elements in the novel. All the characters were unique and had their own quirks which made me laugh a lot. The foodie elements were there, but it wasn't so much that it would become tedious to read.

But honestly, it's kind of a brain-dead novel. Your brain have to take a backseat reading this, only then you'll be able to enjoy it wholeheartedly.

Lin Yiyi, as a female lead, was great (though she was kind of a stereotype). Her EQ though irked me quite a bit.

Lu Xun was such a golden retriever male lead. He was one of my favorite characters in the novel.

What I hated in this novel was the romance aspect of it. Like, I knew that the romance in here is at best a subplot. And I went into this knowing exactly that. But boy, oh boy, the romance is underdeveloped to say the least. The tug of war between the leads for no valid reason frustrated me so much, especially on the female lead's end.

There were good family dynamics with potential here that could've been explored more. The emotional aspects, too, could have been emphasized a bit more. We see it at the beginning of the novel a bit but then somehow it becomes mundane.

Anyway, despite my dissatisfaction with the novel, I did enjoy reading it. So that's that.

Toodles!

A vacation read. A short funny novel about what might happened if you died - but woke up inside the plot of a novel. And a super soapy one at that!

Heroine Lin Yiyi awakes and find that not only is she NOT a heroine, she’s playing the mother of a side character who is long dead and much maligned. Her daughter (turns out she’s a divorced actress with two children) is a side character and dies after a run in with the villain of the story.

Well, right now, those evil characters are 13 and younger and Lin Yiyi decides to begin making her own moves.

Not as an actress - but as an investor! Her own mother - she embraces their relationship. Her own kids - raises them with love and guidance. Her own career - she starts a restaurant just as she meant to in her “real” life.

No violence just a ridiculous amount of food descriptions as well as some new romance with her neighbor- the “former villain’s” uncle.

I was on a vacation with extended family when I read this. One night, we all watched a terrible movie where all the characters made exactly the wrong choices. We all called out what they should have done - don’t scam your way onto the ski mountain, zip up your jacket, don’t leave your phone behind - and in this novel MC Lin Yiyi satisfyingly did just that. This would make an entertaining movie!

It started out ok, the fact that the MC transmigrated into a woman 10 years older and with two kids was interesting, the children were cute and even though the ML and MC only start having interactions half way through the novel it was interesting, at least the first half.

At one point it slowed down quite a lot, she wasn't as involved in cooking and there was more things about the entertainment circle but even that was quite superficial and everything was resolved smoothly so there wasn't much going on...

The more interesting parts were when the two families would get together and their interactions. The ML was really nice and even though at work he was the typical cold CEO, at home he was just a smiley, fun and silly guy who like to tease mc's son and dot on mc's daughter and was a total foodie.

I liked the fact that there was no great villain just some annoying people once in a while but never too over the top.

I myself am quite poor so I couldn't quite connect with the main leads over the top spending in the second half of the novel, that was a lot. But even though I couldn't understand that kind of life they weren't obnoxious, so I didn't disliked them.

Overall it was an ok read. The first half was really good and the second half was really boring to me.

Cartoonish and bland, if you aren’t bored or annoyed you aren’t reading this book. The comedy consists of everyone bullying everyone else and the 'plot' is ‘I’m a chef and this basic food is the bestest'. The protagonist acts like a child is walked all over by everyone, including her children. It’s probably suppose to come off as humor but it’s annoying to me.

The very definition of mediocre.
It’s not good, but then again it’s not bad either. It is however really, really boring.
I could go into details, but I don’t care enough.

Save your time and read something better.

La protagonista no es mala persona, me cae bien. Sabe lo que quiere y no se arrastra por nada. Lo que no me gusta es la química de la pareja. Más bien que carece de química. Solo eso.

Was obsessed in the beginning, lost steam by the end. Still, a really cute fluffy story! I would’ve liked a tad more from the romance since it wasn’t really.. well, romantic? But good overall.
