A Nonconformist preacher and writer of the seventeenth century, John Bunyan is well known as the author of Pilgrim's Progress , the epic tale of Christian's journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City-from unbelief, to repentance and faith, to the trials and victories of life, to heaven. Many people don't realize, however, that Bunyan based the story on his own life, which was full of dangers, obstacles, disappointments, tough decisions, and great encouragements. Simonetta Carr introduces young readers to the story of John Bunyan, from his rebellious youth to preacher of the gospel and prisoner for the sake of Christ. His example of faithfulness to God will inspire readers as they learn about this important figure of church history. Table of 1. Willful Child, Daring Soldier 2. The Christian's Progress 3. While I have read the book Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan, I must admit I hardly knew much about his life. In her book, John Bunyan, Simonetta Carr brings a wonderful narrative of this preacher and author.
John Bunyan - a rebellious youth, am author, a preacher of the gospel, and prisoner of the Gospel. He remained faithful to God through many hardships and difficulties. As one reads of his life, young people will quickly realize Pilgrim's Progress is an allegory of his own life.
His life is a story filled with the history which was going on in England during those years. He stood up for religious freedom at a time when the rulers of the day had the final say in how one could worship God.
This is a five chapter book, including a time line of John Bunyan's life and a Did You Know section of rich facts from his life. Also included is a quote from Pilgrim's Progress titled, "Christian at the Cross".
The book is well illustrated by Matt Abraxas with sketches and photos which brings the story to life. The combination of information and illustrations is an engaging way for young readers to learn church history.
This is an ideal addition to any home, church, or Christian school library. It is well suited for children aged seven to twelve. It is a hard covered book, making it one which will hold up to years of usage.
*I was provided a copy of this book by Reformation Heritage Books. All opinions are honest and my own.
This is a wonderful book. I recently read it with my four-year-old daughter. Her favorite book for the past month or so has been a new children's version of The Pilgrim's Progress called Little Pilgrim's Big Journey, which begins with a brief word about John Bunyan writing the book while in prison. Always inquisitive, my daughter wanted to know more about Bunyan, which led me to finding this book (as well as others in the series). I have been sensing that she is ready to tackle larger books with greater complexity, and these biographies are exactly what I hoped for. They sufficiently stretched her comprehension without discouraging her or losing her interest. She is already falling in love with these books, and I have no doubt that her appreciation for them will only grow as she does. It is a blessing to have these resources for introducing children to our past brothers and sisters in Christ at such a young age!
