While You Walked By delivers a heartfelt, coming-of-age story about the hope that can be found even in the most desperate circumstances.
REGINA FELTY was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she claims you can find the finest Italian hoagies and soft pretzels on the East Coast. Although she had always kept a journal and wrote short stories for fun, it was during her turbulent teen years in a foster home that Regina turned to writing as a source of personal therapy.
Besides dividing her time between being an author and her career as an American Sign Language Educational Interpreter, Regina also manages her personal blog, It’s a Felty Thing, and has a special place in her heart for troubled youth.
Aden is a 12 year old boy living in Philadelphia. His mother, Lauren is a drug addict and prostitute. Lauren drops Aden off at a homeless shelter and walks away. Aden decides he will not go into the shelter and prefers to try and make it on his own in the streets. Eventually Aden meets and becomes good friends with Ben. Ben is an older man who works in the bakery as a maintenance man. Ben is a recovering alcoholic who lost his wife and son years before due to his drinking problem. The story follows Aden and Ben through ups and downs they encounter throughout there friendship. They are both looking for what they have each lost and must face truths that aren’t easy to admit to. This was a nice story that had no big surprises which made it just an ok read.
With such magical prose, i became trapped in this story...
Every character won me to empathy, evoking a reality that only excellent fiction can create...the superior talent of Regina's beautiful prose carried such rich images: dark, and stark, gentle yet violent in the moments needed to weave this complex tale of a child left to fend for itself on the mean streets of living...
I really appreciated this book. From the very beginning Felty connects you in a very intimate way to Aden’s plight. I will never look at homeless people the same. This book left me with the realisation of how whether the tragedy is bestowed on us by others or self created, it has the ability to impact us in away that makes us insightful and empathetic. Aden and Ben’s story does just that. Felty does a great job of connecting us in a very intimate way to Aden’s pain, fear, grief, and happiness.
Damn good book!! As soon as I started reading this book, I knew that I was going to enjoy it and want to read it every moment that was free! It is a heart retching, heartbreaking, heartwarming book that makes you feel every emotion. I just hope that the author has a continuation of this book. I would read it for sure!! Loved it!!
Wonderful story of positive and negative forces. Having Hope can get you thru to the next day, week, month, year. A little boys hopefully heart and a old man’s gentle kindness forge a strong bond.
Emotions!!!! So glad this ending was this one. If Aidan had ended up elsewhere in his life, I don't think I'd be thrilled. And Ben......savior vibes all the way
I so enjoyed this story. I liked all of the characters. I believe the author presented authentic circumstances in a realistic way. There were difficulties present in the two main characters lives that pulled on my heartstrings. However, with the influence of their relationship, each helped one another get through them. The author did a good job of representing "real life."

Readers’ Comments “I thought this was such a good coming-of-age story. I loved the two broken characters and how they developed. This is not so much a plot driven story but more character driven. It is a little depressing in parts, but it's uplifting too.” Female reader, age 16 “This is not your typical young adult adventure story. It's slower paced focusing on the characters and how the life they have led has negatively affected them. I think this book is all about trust and how two people can work together to overcome problems. There's a strong mental health theme to it which is very relevant at the moment.” Female reader, age 17 “I very much enjoyed this book. It is sad in parts, but there's a feeling of hope throughout it. I was really hoping the two protagonists would be OK at the end. I think this author is very good and I'd be happy to read another book by her.” Male reader, age 15

This is the story of the friendship between a homeless twelve-year-old buy and a sixty-year-old recovering alcoholic. Touching and sad but well written. A moving novel about the lives of the less-fortunate amongst us. Aden, a young boy is left by his single-parent and drug-using mother at a shelter because she wants better for him than she can provide; but frightened of the look of some of the other residents he heads out to make his own way on the streets of Philadelphia where she works. Ben, an ageing alcoholic who has lost his family due to his addiction, works in a bakery to make ends meet and regrets the direction his life has taken. Somehow the old man and the boy meet and form a friendship which becomes threatened when Ben tries to help Aden to something better than a brutal existence on the streets.
Regina Felty has delivered a well-written and convincing narrative of the relationship of this couple of outcasts and makes the reader care about what becomes of them Whether or not their personal troubles are resolved, and in what manner, is the force keeping the pages turning, hopefully to a satisfactory resolution. A recommended read.
Good Story- Author Does Not Know Philadelphia This was a beautiful and uplifting story about a twelve year old boy named Aiden who is abandoned by his mother and left to survive alone on the mean streets of Philadelphia. He befriends a broken older man who works in a bakery. I finished it in one sitting during a snowstorm. My problem is that the writer claims to be from Philadelphia but seems to know nothing about the city. Her depiction of the homeless problem is real and accurate. But Center City Philadelphia is a vibrant, lively area with many fine restaurants, cultural venues and historic sites. Prostitutes and drug dealers are not roaming the streets. If she had mentioned a specific part of the city where these things are prevalent like Kensington or North Philly, I might have found the story more believable. Eventually Aiden is removed from the streets and taken into foster care. He is placed with a family in the Philadelphia suburb of King of Prussia. King of Prussia is known for having one the country’s largest malls and for being an industrial hub for many businesses. The author describes it as a bucolic area with a lot of farmland. Maybe I am being particular having lived In Philadelphia and it’s suburbs for nearly twenty years. I did enjoy the story. I just think it might have been better researched.

Well written. I couldn't put this book down. I laughed and cried, then cried more. Sometimes with sadness and sometimes with happiness. I came from a broken home. Though I never had to go into foster care but still the loss of a parent through addiction and divorce. My father grew up in foster homes that terribly abused him. When he remarried and we became a blended family of 8 children it got pretty crazy. When some older siblings began to move my father and step mother decided they would become foster parents. My father wanted children to be in a home where they felt safe and loved. He didn't have that as a child. I saw many children come and go over several years. When they did finally retire related to age only and just not able to keep up.... 160 foster children had been loved by my parents and our family. So this book just touched a lot emotions that I still hold dear in my heart. Thank you for a beautiful story.
Life is a learning took and it's your choice to determine your life. By the choices you make.
It was a very heart warming book. I have seen mother's on the street with kids and I say a prayer for them. I think the life that kid is living. But in reality the kid is with his Mom and regardless of the life style he loves her unconditionally, . I loved this book it had me in tears and Ben did change his ways but at the end he got his Son back in his life. I believe the things that happen good or bad in our life is a learning come from God . Never loose hope. With God all is possible. Very Good book.
While You Walked By was an excellent challenge to my complacency in helping others. The novel was powerful in the struggle presented by the characters as they faced personal decisions which were based in good intentions but had potentially disastrous immediate consequences. The characters made the hard choice... when so often we make the easy one. The characters were well developed, and the personal growth was believable. I found myself cheering and worrying throughout the book. It was hard to read all at once, but it wouldn't leave me alone. I had to keep picking it back up. What would happen next? Well written and highly recommended.
A beautifully written debut novel depicting the hardships experienced by two lonely individuals. It's funny how sad & unfortunate circumstances can draw two people together, which was the case with 12 year old homeless Aden & 59 year old Bakery maintenance worker Ben. Their bond & friendship eased the desperate feelings stemmed from life's losses & despite one small but necessary betrayal, both lives were forever changed.
This work of fiction is sad, slow moving but blooms into much happier times. I'm still stunned that this was the author's first novel. It was a poignant yet delightful story to read.
From the very start, I was captivated by this heartwarming story about two people who met by chance. Their meeting is the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Aden, a lonely, abandoned boy, and Ben, a man who is also suffering from loneliness and loss in his life. Their friendship leads them both on the path to finding a new life filled with love and trust. This talented new author hit the ground running with this story and it captured my attention until the very end. I recommend this book to everyone. You won't be disappointed.
A very touching story about how one act of kindness can positively change another person's life. Wonderful characters and character development, a simple, yet believable, plot, and a heartwarming story of, love and loss, and of going out of one's way to help someone in need of a helping hand. I am a big fan of, both, Charles Martin and Dan Walsh, and feel that Author Regina Felty compares favorably with these two fine authors, authors who, like Regina Felty, write stories that are capable of touching one's heart.
While You Walked By starts out slow, but quickly picks up steam. Aden and Ben’s unlikely friendship and the development of trust and letting people into your life - allowing yourself to care and love and be loved is huge in this book.
It’s a feel good book that will also help you think and maybe be less inclined to walk by a homeless person without seeing them. Without giving away any spoilers - one man's decision to engage and really see the world around him changes not only his life, but the lives of people he grows to care about and love.
Aden, 12 years old, is abandoned by his mother at the back of a shelter. He has a worn sleeping bag, a backpack with a change of clothes, and not much more. After living on the streets, digging in trash cans, he inadvertantly meets Ben, an older man working in a bakery who has also lost much in his life. A relationship develops, and builds between the two. Many other things happen, good and bad, and Aden's life takes on new meaning. Be prepared to ache, get angry, and finally fall in love.
Regina’s debut novel is rich, thoughtful, and woven with purpose and intention. It is well worth the read. I was drawn into the main characters, Aden and Ben, almost immediately upon meeting them. Their tale twists and turns in a way that will tie up the reader’s heart strings as it unfolds. The message between the lines of the story is a beautiful one that will leave readers grateful to have invested in the story.
This wonderful story combines two: a coming of age story and a redemption story. With two protagonists, a young boy and an older man who meet and become friends, and help each other overcomes the demons in their lives. You care very much for these two characters and the author has developed them well. If there are antagonists in this story they are drugs and alcohol. This book leaves you with a great feeling in your heart.
This book took me on a journey that I didn’t necessarily want to go on but the destination was definitely worth the trip. It’s not easy to read about the hardships of a young innocent child left destitute on the streets of a city to try to survive. This book gives hope to the hopeless with the realization that even in the depths of betrayal we can find love and family.
Although it claims to be fiction it portends truth - but with a happy ending. Living in Lancaster and having gone to Philly many times, I remember a friend giving menu first tour of the city. All those people sleeping on church steps and in parks. How do they survive? Thank God for people like Ben,Paula , and the Pearson’s Thanks to the author for this story so true on so many levels. PTF.
I really liked this book, and the way Ben and Aden helped each other. I especially liked that it was a feel good story about foster care with a happy ending. The only thing that didn't ring true with me was Aden's reluctance to share his last name. He was determined to find his mother. And since he seemed like a relatively intelligent kid, it didn't make sense that he didn't realize that giving the authorities that info would have helped. Anyway, a good story.
