De la Maza was an esteemed Mexican historian. He revisits the controversy of whether or not the Virgin appears from the perspective of those who wrote about it -- and there were clerics in the seventeenth century who warned against the growing cult there. The inescapable problem for those who believe in the Virgin of the Guadalupe remains -- why did the first Mexican Archbishop, Juan de Zumarraga, very prone to take up the pen, remain silent on a miracle presented to him?
