I love most of the cast - especially two main characters, character development and relationships of the characters. The plot is is often pretty fun and entertaining even if unrealistic but for a chance I was able to enjoy the stories despite that fact. The writting style is mostly solid and well crafted but with too many typos for my liking (and got worse with each novella) which distracted from the stories more or less strong. My two 'big' issues: 1) The mysteries, especially the way the MCs 'solve' the cases is weak. Three of the mysteries were way too unbelievable - even compared to this blend of crazy we encountered in these stories. Most of the novellas in the first half were more of chick-lit with a dash of mystery than the other way round luckily it change in the second half a bit. 2) #6 in this series (An Artful Assassination) looks like a cross-over between this series and Senoia Cozy Mystery Series. Several of the cases of the MC from Senoia are mentioned and it looks like the events of this book continue in the last one in that series. If you're as OCD about reading series in order as I am I'd recommend to read the first eleven books of the series set in Senoia, Georgia before you start #6 in this one.
All in all I enjoyed these short mysteries (all between 100 and 110 pages) so much I set other of the author's series on my watch list and will keep a look out for deals of them - especially the Senoia Cozy Mystery box. After reading that I plan to re-read this travel cozies and hope by then most of the typos and errors will be gone and hopefully even some of the plot-inconsistencies between the single books. The average rating of the 12 story ratings is 3.5 but because of the typos I couldn't find it in me to go for the 4*. Should the author/publisher provide Amazon with an updated re-edited version when I'll re-read it and depending on the extend of the changes I'll raise my rating by at least one star.
I agree with some of the other reviews that indicate that this series of books is poorly edited. At one point I thought maybe English was a second language for the author. In general I found the books darker than I would expect in a “cozy” mystery. I struggled to read all of them in this box set and it is unlikely that I will read more by this author.
.. a cozy mystery box set. Unfortunately it seems these days that labelling it "cozy" means that editing, continuity, grammar, dialogue and research can be ignored. It's a shame because with just a bit more work it would have been a million times better.
Komodo dragons do not roam around Uluru.. they were once native to Australia but that was a very long time ago.. now they only reside on 5 Indonesian islands. Kangaroos can be shot under licence, Alice Springs population has a long history of protecting abandoned or orphaned Joey's by adopting, hand rearing and releasing. Unfortunately this adventure doesn't work.. this story was way off.
The errors, typos and grammar, are numerous throughout. Whilst it's not a serious series, or the next epic saga, by any stretch of the imagination it really shouldn't be an excuse to submit an unedited manuscript as a completed final draft. What should have been an amusing light-hearted read to distract you from the world outside became an irritation as the errors and issues mounted up.
Repeatedly you state Kendell has 5 years accumulated vacation as she's never taken a day off and that amounts to 4 weeks.. really? Frequently time becomes elastic.. the 4 weeks are more than used up.. Pauline's home life changes too much.. she has a house, she's sold it to travel, she's still got it, it's gone again.. her extensive family boil down to two granddaughters and a great grandson.. where are the "money grabbing" rest?
So many other things I could mention.
I'm disappointed.. it was funny.. silly funny.. but the reality is the failure to edit it properly makes it sub par and annoying to read. I don't care particularly what genre I read, I love reading and will give anything a go, but I loathe paying for unfinished, unedited novels full of issues.
These were fairly good books, some better than others. I didn't care for the ones that have Kendall & Pauline dealing with international mafia. Unfortunately, as with other series by this author, these books are very poorly edited, which is very distracting. It seems as though the author used a dictation software and nobody actually read the books to make sure the audio input was transcribed correctly.
I have read several series by this author and all suffer from the same defect of poor editing. Equally annoying is her love affair with the word "smirk". She uses it on almost every page of every book. And usually uses it incorrectly. She needs to look up the definition of the word, and use it properly and use it much less.
This is a fun series by a good author, casual and easy to get through. It wouldn't take much to take this author from good to great - a new editor would go a long way to help with overused words/phrases and a bit more realism and suspense. Overall I would recommend these books and will continue to read other books by this author.
I read copiously. I'm an old lady now who never had the opportunity to travel as far and wide as I dreamed. Dick met Jane, Spot started running and I've had a book in my hand ever since. I love a good story that takes me to different places. I can depend on Susan Harper for just that. I'm looking for more books by her.
I liked that the whole series came in one box set. Good clean read, perfect for all ages. I liked how the series ended. Would have liked an update on what became of some of the other characters over the years but overall happy with the series and the characters. Highly recommend this boxed set and author.
I enjoyed all the adventures. Although I was surprised that the author saw an active volcano on O'ahu. The only active one is on the Big Island Hawaii. I don't know enough about their other destinations except Alaska has 6 months of 24 hours of darkness in the winter.
That being said...I'd recommend this set of books. Truly a fun read!
This was a really fun series! The adventures of Pauline and Kendall and Dot were interesting from beginning to end! The mysteries keep you interested and curious. I often found myself laughing out loud. The editing was whacked. I would read more of her stories.
I enjoyed the adventures and couldn't wait to read what happened next. Thank you for the adventure and entertainment. Finding books that hold my attention is hard as I'm an avid reader.
Really enjoyed the series. Found it quite unbelievable so many people willing to speak to strangers not associated with the law. The storyline was very interesting though. Loved the characters.
The s tories were fascinating. All of the characters were intriging and continued to develop to the very last page... I highly recommend this set to anyone who needs some good, clean downtime.
Sorry to read this series has come to an end. Really enjoyed Pauline, Kendal, and of course Dot! Their adventures were great fun and exciting. Thank you Susan Harper.
I was really into this series of books. I loved each book that it took 1 1/2 days to read each book. I like Kendell before the end of the book, I wanted to know where they were going next.A very fun book that you cannot put down.
Love how this unlikely duo get together and get into trouble almost every where they go. They also get out of trouble and make friends with many different people from different countries.
This series of books kelp my attention until the very end. Kendall and Pauline found trouble everything where they went. Could not put the books down. Sorry it ended but please with the ending
Light hearted reading. There is a crossover with Felicity and co from Susan Harper's Senoia series. Reading 12 in a row you notice the repetition of plot lines and it becomes a bit predictable. I enjoyed it.
The whole series was funny. Kendall is a flight attendant who meets Pauline and her dog Dot on their flight from New York to London/UK. The two ladies like each other instantly and when Kendall's flight back home is delayed Pauline invites her to share part of her holidays. The "part" becomes a long time and the three of them solve crimes, start a very successful blog etc. during their adventures together. Easy lovely read.
I was just about to move on from reading cozy mysteries as they were starting to bore me unless I cared about the lives of the characters. And I was getting tired of murder mysteries. Why can't we have mysteries about other things. Well there are some murders in this series but they are only a small part of the story.
I loved this series, absolutely loved it, no ifs ands or buts about it
Kendall and Dot and all the gang are fun and funny. I really got caught up in the stories, no matter how unrealistic or the few typos. I can whole heartedly recommend this series. And no koalas are not bears my only real peeve. :D
I loved all 12 books in this series. The relationship between Kendall and Pauline was priceless. Then when you add in Dot to the mix, Magic happens. Couldn’t put them down.
This series was very entertaining. It contained personable and lovable characters. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Would recommend to anyone wanting to enjoy a light read.
Kendall, Pauline and Dot, the endearing pup are all good characters. Loved the plots and characters. I liked that the destinations were well defined and, indeed, had me want to travel to see more of our world. TA TA for now.
Really great series. I just kept reading 1after another. Each one was a bit different as far as the mystery went although the main characters stayed pretty much the same. Both ladies are a hoot and I loved that it is a clean story. No foul language, no sordid details. Great 👍👍👍
