Annie's head will almost blow up when her late aunt confesses a huge secret she has buried for years, and just like that, her life is about to change forever. Annie gets ready for a fresh start in the west, although she can't even fathom what challenges are lying ahead. When her path crosses Jon Balladeer's, she finds herself in a maelstrom of emotions that she's never experienced before; yet she keeps wondering if her arrival in Golden Creek has been a terrible mistake. Is meeting him a fateful event or is she going to be sorely regretful? Will she survive in this wild world or will her heart be broken while trying to accomplish her aunt's death wish?
When Jon Balladeer's father died, the family business fell on his shoulders, and he has been struggling to protect it no matter the risks coming up. Meeting Annie and having to deal with her intense personality will be a pleasant time-out, but before he knows it, he will start growing feelings for her, even if he is too headstrong to admit it. Will he manage to keep her safe from all the dangers that loom large? Will he put his ego aside and try his best to win her heart?
The spark between them is too hard to ignore but their rebellious behaviors will make their romance almost impossible to bloom. Will they take an honest step towards each other giving a chance to their feelings? When a terrible incident will devastate Annie, will Jon stand by her side?
Sometimes granting last requests have consequences.

This story took me a long time to get through. These two were at each other's throat from the moment she stepped off the train. It seemed to me that took an especially long time to see the spark between themselves. She recognize the spark, but was not going to let Jon bully her. Jon had no idea how to behave around a woman. The last thing you should do is demand. I think if he had more helpful and seen to some type of security for her, than trying to bully her; he would have gotten a whole lot farther, a whole sooner. The characters in this story have two modes: polite & yelling. It seems to me that Annie thought moving away from Philadelphia was a way for her to escape her routine life & dragging her sister away from some barman who save her sister.
After the death of their Aunt Bonnie, Annie (20) and sister Daisy (16) traveled from Philadelphia, PA to Golden Creek, CO to deliver in person a letter written by Bonnie. Annie had a desire to start over in the West. Their sewing skills should enable them to be successful. But a series of problems kept Annie's dream in limbo. Had she made the worst mistake in her life? Jon (a determined bachelor) didn't trust them, but he couldn't shake the urge to protect them. But when two stubborn minds clash, Jon and Annie seemed doomed to fail in both of their dreams. A good fun clean story..... I recommend.
I have certain expectations when I pick up a Carol Colyer book; this book meets those expectations. I found strong determined characters, a twisted story line, romance and conflict. Annie shows that determination in leaving Philadelphia to deliver a note to an unknown gentleman from her deceased aunt. Jon is determined to keep Golden Creek, Colorado, safe. Two determined, okay, stubborn young people make this an interesting story. Thank you, Carol, for this book.
An emotional, suspenseful, and exciting read. Annie is on a mission for her beloved Aunt Bonnie yet she wonders if coming to Golden Creek was not a big mistake. Jon Balladeer is a challenge for Annie the attraction is there but neither wants to give in to it. This was a rather exciting tale with a strong and determined cast of characters. They took on all the challenges that faced them. It was an excellent piece I was very impressed.
She agreed to do her late aunt's wish. So she heads out west as a mail order bride. He has his problems and issues and she is headstrong. They have the attraction but need to work through the problems first. It is exciting, emotional, suspenseful, and much more. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.
I love a story about a woman who is not afraid to venture out to parts unknown to make a life of her own. Annie, with a reluctant Daisy, is such a person. And because of that, she finds her happy ever after. The reader gets to follow along on her adventure as she finds the love of her life.
Extremely wordy, often confusing due to the authors lack of editing and correcting of the contents. I found myself rapidly skimming the contents just to get it over with. The ending was abrupt and just left you hanging. Kind of like the author had finally just ran out of words! Is there somewhere it says, the more words, the better. Really?
Annie and Daisy make a very big chance at a secure future when they go to Colorado from Philadelphia. They experience lots of misfortune but end up finding love and happiness for themselves. A very moving tale.
Great story. I liked how Annie was such a spitfire. She took such good care of her sister. I was glad she found the love of her life. Keep up the good work. God Bless. 😉
Could two sisters wh0 just lost their aunt figure out what lies ahead for them? Annie and Daisy were taught to be dressmakers by their aunt and had a wonderful business in the city. Their aunt gave them a letter she wanted delivered which was in the West. Daisy was young and thought she was in love but Annie knew the man and knew he wasn't for her. What would be the best thig to do? They decided to go West and weren't quite ready for what they saw. Annie was very strong minded and used to doing her own thing. Jon was owner of the mining store and doing well but the town was having problems with robberies. He thought Annie was too strong minded for her good. Daisy was hopeful of finding love after she realized the guy back home would never have married her. Through ups and downs Jon and Annie finally realized they belonged together.
Typically I enjoy reading stories from this author. They are do well. In this one I felt it was very wordy in the beginning, coming to the middle of the story I felt it started to show promise. When the two sisters arrived in the new town things got much better then the words flowed. I did get confused a few times with the sisters identity. I lost track of who was older and who was who. By the end of the story I felt like I enjoyed it better.
I wish the sisters and Jon would have read the letter, but I understand why they didn’t. Next beef is with the name of the other young man Stewart, I do prefer the spelling Stuart. Just my preference. Thought with the way she spelled Jon and not John she would have taken it into consideration.
I really did get drawn into this more than I thought I would. I’m a sucker for this time frame so it wasn’t too hard. The language is a little “ old-fashioned “ maybe. I can’t think of another way to put it. Didn’t find any glaring typos or grammar. That automatically earns the book at least a 1/2 star. I finished this much quicker than I thought I would. I envisioned a kinda on the back burner while I was reading other things. But I really wanted to know how it played out. I believe this was a free download but can’t see for sure. The opinions are my own and I did enjoy this book set in the gold rush days.
The story is a sweet romance. The history of the hero was stated more times than necessary. But it didn't detract from the reading experience. What did detract from the reading experience was the use of the word "she" unnecessarily at the beginning of countless scene changes. For example: "She Annie went downstairs." or " She Jon slept fitfully. Completely unnecessary and very irritating.
Annie and Daisy's aunt made an unusual request while on her death bed. How can they leave their home and business to go to Golden Creek and deliver a letter to a man she was in love with as a young girl? It would be a leap in the dark. Would they be able to find him? Was he still alive? They would go, but they had no idea what awaited them. This is a story that will grab your attention. Relax and enjoy!
I enjoyed your story. What I thought was as bit much when she went to the camp by herself. Like she could protect him... Just didn't think that was realistic or she was incredibly stupid. Could of been kidnapped..raped...who knows. The rest was great.
The story was well written, the plot was engaging. The characters were authentic. Annie wanted to go west to protect her sister, Daisy, from a scoundrel, and to deliver a letter to her late aunt's first love. Moving from Philadelphia to the wild west was quite an adventure. There was excitement, danger, and love. It was a good read.
Adventure, criminal shenanigans and gold fever mix in this historical romance! Liked Annie's straight forward manner and Jon's protective yet humble aura. Would have enjoyed more of Aunt Bonnie and her beau. Good read.
Annie and her sister had been taught to sew by their Aunt Bonnie. After Bonnie died Annie moved them both to Colorado. When Jon first laid eyes on them he thought they looked like trouble and needed to be watched closely.
This was a reply good book. It had common sense and foolishness, the insecurities of love, the securities in friendship that can bloom into life. It has western cowboy action in it, real life situations, disappointments, and victories. It really was good.
