A discovery in the Siberian tundra turns the entire world upside down, rewriting history and setting seemingly unstoppable forces in motion. In a race against time in a quickly changing world, they must learn to adapt to survive. Will people accept their fate or fight to save an existence that was always meant to end? Can humanity survive?
I have wanted to write and publish books since I started writing stories at six years old. My first book 'The Monsters Holiday' was that first story that took me into the world of writing, strangely it seems my subject matter chose me. After a 22 year gap from writing, my first real book 'The Willing Observer' happened and I haven't looked back, instead I just keep writing. Novellas, short stories, poetry and a non fiction book. There is more to come...
When a team of scientists find a strange virus in the Russian tundra, they jeopardize all of humanity. The Unknown is a tale of mankind trying to use what they find to their own advantage, without foreseeing what they stand to lose through their own arrogance.
It’s a big premise packed into 120 pages, and I think this is part of the novel’s downfall. The story unfolds at breakneck speed, which is great on one hand as I could hardly wait to flip to the next page. But on the other hand, there is not enough time to unpack all the characters and plotline.
My low rating is also in part because of the scrutiny I apply to stories within science fiction. The facts upon which tales in this genre rely need to be unquestioned by the reader - they need to be real enough to allow our suspension of disbelief. And to me, this is where The Unknown fell a bit flat.
But, I’m still glad I read this book. The imagination that K.L. Wicks applies to her works is fantastic! This is the third novel of hers I’ve read (The Willing Observer, and A Parallel Abyss, were the other two), and I’ll be snapping up the next book she publishes as soon as it’s available.
The Unknown tells the story of the discovery of a virus in the Arctic, a virus which quickly spreads and changes the world entirely. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and would be interested in a sequel to explain the events as they unfolded further. The author uses a lot of long sentences, which took me a bit of getting used to, but the story was well paced, with good description.
