She was not asked. She was claimed.

Sloan has lived among shifters long enough to know what happens when an alpha takes a mate, but she never imagined that her turn would come to be marked and mastered. Until today...

Today Gareth of Ravenscar decided she was his, and she wasn't given a choice in the matter.

Now, with her cheeks blushing, her bottom burning, and the evidence of his rough conquest still dripping down her bare thighs, she is beginning to understand what it truly means to be claimed.

Publisher's Note: Overlord is a stand-alone novel set in the same world as Warlord. It includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don't buy this book.

Gareth turns a young woman without her consent, nearly killing her in the process. But, hey, in Delta James' world, that's love.

I've long thought that with each new book, Ms. James deliberately pushes the boundaries of non-consent, sexual violence and humiliation, and misogyny further and further just to see how far she can go -- it really does feel like a game. Given that the actions of her "fated mate" almost kill Sloan, the only step left for the author is one that would really put a damper on all the sex.

ETA: Interesting how readers think that pointing out misogyny is kink-shaming (there's a lot more going on in Delta James' books than just spanking and non-con; there are whole passages devoted to how the female characters are inferior to the males -- really don't understand how that's so hard to see), that they believe "shaming" is a one-way street (in other words, they're fine with "shaming" other people's reviews), that they believe "spanking and sexual scenes" is enough of a disclaimer and should cover everything, that just because something is fictional anything goes, that reviewers should only leave good reviews for every book, and that ANY of this is their business. Seriously -- no one is preventing you from reading the book, no one is preventing you from reviewing it, no one is commenting on your reviews ("condemning you" -- seriously? Who has even mentioned you? Except for the times I'm forced to think about you when you not so implicitly reference my review, I don't) unless you comment on mine, no one is preventing the author from writing it, no one is preventing the publisher from releasing it, no one is preventing Amazon from selling it. Really, I absolutely promise you that I don't have the power to do any of the above. Now, here's what you don't have the power to do: stopping people from leaving reviews.

Can't help thinking I've struck a nerve since some readers can't let this go. You tell me to stop reading her books? Why don't you stop reading my reviews?

2nd ETA: Calling other reviewers who don't rate books as highly as you'd like them to "morons" and "cry babies" as another reviewer did recently is probably not the best way to go about it.

This was just "Do what I say or I'll spank you until you do what I say. You are a woman and no matter how capable you have shown yourself to be, you could't possibly be more capable than me, so you can't do anything at all but sit at home." It's also fated mates so there is no tension around them having to really do anything to make their relationship work.

This was not for me. I was so bored. Poor Sloan. The only thing she has to do all day now is wander around the keep and wait until her mate wants to fuck until she starts having all the babies to keep her womanlyself busy.

Blah.

I will tell you, I was saddened at the close of the Wayward Mates series. It had a unique twist to shape - shifters and some great world - building. I wanted more but understood that DJ had done everything she wanted with the characters. I was still hopefully it wasn't the end of that world.
I was so happy when "Warlord" came out and now this followup. At first, you don't know what time in history the story is taking place - before or after the Wayward Mates series. The world seems to hints of Renaissance times, but then Garth drops the bomb that his ancestor was Shea (one of the Fated mates from the Wayward Mates series) and then I just geek out. This world is like post-apocalyptic. I'm so intrigued to get more bread crumbs as to what happened in the past.
Storywise, Sloan is a fighter and a firecracker. She isn't going to be told what to do or by who, even if it is by an arrogant alpha intent on proving she is his fated mate. He may steal her humanity and her body's reactions, but will he ever steal this little thief 's heart as she has stolen his? I can't wait for the next one.

Please be aware this is a DARK romance, which means it contains some elements of dubious/non-consent

Overlord is the follow up to Warlord, it can be read stand alone but I would suggest reading the books in order to gain maximum enjoyment. Sloan and Gareth's story isn't always easy - as the blurb states "Today Gareth of Ravenscar decided she was his, and she wasn't given a choice in the matter." However it is full of passion, which is bound to happen when two very strong and determined characters lock horns. I thoroughly enjoyed their story and couldn't read it fast enough.

There were moments when I didn't even like Gareth, but then the author cleverly wove his emotions into the story, often via his fated mate link with Sloan, totally changing my mind. Yes he could be considered dictatorial, but when we really listen via his thoughts, words and actions he truly loves, honours and respects Sloan.

Whilst Sloan and Gareth's story is complete, at least for now, trouble is brewing and I'm fairly certain there will be a few more books before peace is truly restored in this dystopian/shifter world.

DO NOT FEAR; I WILL COME FOR YOU MATE. ALL WILL BE WELL

Once again, Ms. Delta James has penned a page-turning, action-packed, romantic suspense filled shifter tale. Whether you have read her Wayward Mates series or not, the story will read well as a stand-alone. If you did read Wayward Mates, the story takes place many years into the future; a plague has ravished the earth, things are returned to the old ways, before technology.

NOTE: This is a post-apocalyptic dark shifter romance. It contains explicit sex scenes and may seem as non-con or dubious consent—but it is the way of life among these shifters---especially when they are fated mates. It is a way of life, with a strong, dominant alpha male and an equally strong submissive female who eventually capitulates and finds the pleasure in his control and mastery over her body. Yes, it even comes with the coveted HEA ended.

The story follows Warlord, and continues at Calon Onest, on the Welsh coastline, where Alric of Ravenscar and Rowen are fated mates. Gareth, Alpha of Ravenscar, will come to assist his brother, Alric, against Edywn of Chepstow. What Gareth didn’t expect was to meet his own fated mate, human, Sloan.

“It is time the Council realized that both Ravenscar and Calon Onest are forces to be recognized and respected. If they cannot learn to do so, then they will learn to fear us.”

Gareth has helped Aliric, and yet, there is something familiar that is calling him—and when he meets Sloan, he knows he has found his fated mate—but she is human and not sure she wants a mate, much less a wolf-shifter.

“This is not a fight that you can win—even if you wanted to. You know from Rowan’s experience that resisting the call of your mate is pointless. You will yield to me, and you will be my mate. You wouldn’t have been my pick, but then fate is often holding the cards that it refuses to show. I scoffed at his notion of a fated mate, and yet, here you are. I will have my way, Sloan. You are my fated mate, and you will be mine.”

“One fate reveals your mate to you; it’s best to simply acknowledge your destiny and embrace it with both hands.”

The plot of the story has strong characters, challenging interactions, with mystery, suspense, along with plenty of angst and will include Sloan taken by Gareth, forced into a mating, bitten and turned. She still won’t capitulate to Gareth’s demands and escape him while she is in transition, but he will find her. For centuries the stories of strong fated mates were only that to him, a story, but now that he has his own fated mate, nothing will get in his way, and he will have control.

“Do not fear; I will come for you, mate. All will be well.”

While there is great chemistry between Gareth and Sloan, there are also battles, angst, anger, disagreements, and passion. He respects her tenacity, but the Alpha and mate in him needs to discipline her, and protect her, even from herself. When it comes to being Mistress of the pack, she is kind, caring, and compassionate—winning favors among the pack.

“My poetic warrior departs to be replaced by his arrogant doppelganger,” she said, laughing.”

There will be plenty of discipline scenes and explicit sex scenes between this fated pair, and while Sloan isn’t a warrior like Rowan, she isn’t one to be ignored either. She is strong in her own right, has a stubborn streak, can be defiant, but is loyal to her pack, and when their safety is threatened, she will take the risk to see help is on the way.

“You are exquisite and complete me in a way only few will ever know. You are my beloved mate and will be for all time,” he purred. “I will teach you. You are my beloved mate, and you please me in a way no other ever has.”

Trouble is coming, and Sloan will defy Gareth to ride and get word to Alaric at Calon Onest and Ruari of Dundalk—Edwyn of Chepstow is on his way with his army—war is coming, but the three Alphas and their fated mates are ready—and they have a plan to defeat the enemy.

While the story does not end on a cliffhanger, it does leave with the possibility of more stories to come, more mates to find each other, and the future of other clans.

Convinced all the 5* reviews are because they were given free copies etc.

No real plot. Meet, he forcibly claims and marks her which then almost kills her. She is obviously upset but he won't be understanding because they are fated to be together therefore he is simply "saving time" by ignoring her rejections.

Love spanking. But it is heavily overused. You can't read a sentence without it being mentioned. It is constantly threatened even when unnecessary such as sloan just having some fun by throwing a pillow at him. Spanking was used constantly just for the sake of it and I found myself getting annoyed at how much it was mentioned.

All he cares about is "satisfying himself between her thighs". They never talk about anything other than sex, and briefly the threat of war which never happens thanks to sloan yet she is still punished for saving them. It's stupid. Like...she almost died and all he can think about is when she will be well enough to take her. When he is given the okay he does, right there in her hospital bed. I doubt he knows anything meaningful about her like her family, favourite foods, favourite colour etc. Being fated mates resulted in insta love so learning all this stuff apparently didnt matter.

I love fated soulmates. However, finding them shouldn't result in love immediately, lust perhaps, but not love. It took away the need for them to work on their relationship and get to know eachother.

Overall it's some decent smut, but theres no storyline or character development.

I was disappointed.

The plots for this and the first book in the series was good but repetitive. In each book it was a forced mating, where they were humiliated (what the alphas called “humbling”) where is was basically stripping them naked and “spanking” them. I like dark themed books as much as the next person with a bit of kink, but this book was more focused on JUST punishment and spankings than the plot or the supposed love the alpha had for the female characters. They went from being free women to basically not even being able to open their mouths without being “spanked” to me it was just abuse because it was put into the books so strong there was almost a punishment scene in every chapter. The women weren’t allowed feelings, thoughts, or even allowed to do much else than get screwed unless it’s what the alpha wanted. If your into books with nothing but talk of being spanked or being spanked constantly than definitely read this. If you’re interested in an alpha and mate deep love story, with a bit of bdsm kink and disapline, which it doesn’t have much feel of that to me and wouldn’t recommend itOne second she hates him and is being publicly screwed and spanked and then she loves him even though she’s still constantly getting spanks. See, it’s WAY too focused on spankings than plot. Hope this helps.

I have really mixed feelings about this book. It was great in part. Bad in parts. And blah in the middle.

There was a couple of typos with names being mixed up on occasion, but not enough to confuse you as to what's going on just enough to give you pause. What will confuse you about what's going on is the sudden scene changes that occur in the book one minute she's galloping towards something in the next she's.......there. I also understand this is a dark romance with spanking, but to punish every little offense to show dominance is a little weird for me. What really mad me mad was when he brings out the belt for something that the H even pointed out was his idea to do in the first place, but of course she had to be spanked for it so he could prove he was still the dominant figure in the relationship. I guess? Though I did read the book till the end I found myself having to force myself to finish towards the end for it just to abruptly cut off because the epilogue is at the beginning of the book. I don't feel like I would read the other books in this series the first one just did not catch my attention to crave more of the other characters stories.

Sloan is a human living within a pack. She has been with shifters long enough to know what happens when a mate is taken. Fortunately for her, none of the males in the pack have shown any interest in taking her as a mate. At least, not until Gareth of Ravenscar arrived to help his brother, Sloan's alpha.

Gareth scents Sloan and knows she is his fated mate and he is compelled to claim her and make her his. Sloan is not so willing to accept Gareth's claim and runs. Against Sloan's will, Gareth claims Sloan and marks her with his bite, a bite that also starts her transition into a wolf. Sloan slowly comes to accept what it is like to truly be claimed by a powerful alpha.

This book includes scenes with spanking when the females disobey their alphas. There are also quite a few sexual scenes. If this type of content offends you I do not recommend you read this book.

I'm not going to give this rating any stars because I didn't finish it. I could barely get through the first couple chapters. I have never considered myself a feminist. I think a lot of my beliefs would on gender roles would horrify feminists in fact and maybe even mainstream. I'm a little old fashioned in my thinking. BUT I've also been raised in a time where women can do anything. So, Although I like the man being the head of the family. I like a strong alpha. I also like a strong female who chooses to live with that dynamic. This book is just so misogynistic (I've never actually used that word before) that I couldn't stomach it. The men just assume the women can't do anything simply because they are women. The men are constantly spanking the women to discipline any kind of self thought out of them. Wow, this book made me so mad and I only got through the first couple chapters. I returned the audiobook. There are better books out there.

Just a note before I leave my review.........this is a dark romance and it might have some content that may be triggering for some. This book was just as good as the first book. Gareth and Sloan are passionate in their feelings for each other but Sloan just can't help herself and keeps getting in trouble. I loved the interaction between them. Her stubbornness and feisty temper are great as I love a main female character that has backbone. Of course that gets her into trouble with her mate. Gareth has to try to keep his pack together and keep his mate in line. Things are brewing and trouble is ahead but with these two, you know it's going to be a great story. This is a page turner and I didn't want it to end. If you are into dark romance and shifters, then pick this book up and settle in to enjoy!

It was a good book- it’s my first by this author. I liked how the heroine kept standing up for herself (though I do wish she had kept on going), however the hero was too harsh. It was his way or the highway, he knew her feelings and claimed to understand, but still punished her, even when her actions saved everyone. That to me is not love nor structure, it is punishment for the sake of punishment. He did not soften to her, even after he claimed to love her he didn’t change his behavior. That upset me, she didn’t seem to mind, but I did. I thought the writing was good and the story flowed, I just didn’t care for the hero.

still searching

While this book was very good there was a major flaw. While I’m okay with the forced fated mating I’m NOT ok with forcing a human to be changed without consent. It should be the burden of the wolf to EARN consent to be changed. And for all of the males of the packs to lament endlessly that they are superior they prove repeatedly they mistake ego for intelligence. Refusing to not acknowledge their mates can contribute more then “running the house” or spitting out offspring. Fucking someone into submission is lazy & shortsighted. They would do well with a bit of humbleness. My quest continues as I search for a series that has a better balance of light & dark.

Loved this story. It is well written, entertaining and holds your attention. Gareth finds his fated mate in Sloan, who is human and does not want to be mated to anyone. As much as she fights the mating, Gareth is determined to claim her. There is a lot of danger, excitement and intrigue in this book and it is told in such a way that it is intriguing causing you to want to find out what happens next. As this is a continuation of Warlord, this book is equally a great read. I would highly recommend this book and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Hopefully, the next book will feature Ruari and Arielle.

Another STEAMY story from Delta James will heat you from the inside!

Wonderful! This will keep you intrigued and keep you on the edge of your seat! Sloan knew she what happened between the woman and the shifters. She just didn't think she would be chosen. Gareth is one amazing masterful man! He is just what she needs and he is just what she wants. Delta you write steamy and sizzle with a flair for the naughty. Wonderful!

I love this second book in the new series. It is amazing. I will admit that I thought that the mate for Gareth was Arielle. I laughed when I saw how wrong I was! It was Sloan who is his fated mate. Gareth, of course, is an overbearing male who will get his way no matter what. I do love these great male characters. Of course, their whole book is basically Sloan accepting that she is Gareth's fated mate with a lot of action thrown in. Just the way I like it! I hope the next book is about Ruari and Arielle. There is a HEA.

DNF

Okay, so I had to stop reading this because it's really really bad, but the dialogue actually had me crying laughing. Like legitimate tears. For example:

“Give yourself to me, Sloan. Feel every inch of my cock as it claims your sweet chasm gently and with great purpose.”

"Her p*ssy had become the perfect sheath for his sword and the vessel for his seed."

"to feel your p*ssy contract in orgasmic bliss around my rampaging cock.."

I'm thoroughly entertained by how bad the writing was which is why it gets 2 stars 🤣

Didn't care for it

The book wasn't my type it was hard to stay interested in and I didn't care for the way they talked like the whole spanking thing was all cutesy and Lord knows the constant reminding of how the alpha would love nothing more to put her over his knee and spank her backside was annoying it had potential but some may like this but to me it was boring

I loved Warlord and Overlord, the next in the series, is even better I think. It has all the elements found in Delta's books, great story, good characters, kick ass heroine, steamy sex, romance and humor. And if you're a fan of the Wayward Mates series you'll find little links to the past.

Listen to audio narrated by Jack Calihan. This was a deeply masculine read which I mostly enjoyed, but I did have some trouble distinguishing the difference between the two male brothers at times.

The world has changed after the plague, become more tribal, there are mutants, humans and wolf packs. The world has become male dominated and in the wolf packs misbehavior is punished by public and private spankings. If you happen to be a were's fated one-true mate, you're screwed. There is no choice, you will be taken, you will be marked, mated and turned.

Gareth had an arranged mate who died in child-birth, he isn't looking for a mate but when he finds her, he's not taking no for an answer.

Sloan is human and has often considered being turned but when she discovers she's Gareth's fated mate she wants nothing to do with him. Refusing to be turned gets her no where and attempts at escape only get her hunted down and spanked.

This read is all about the alpha male, and non-consensual activities that turn consensual because the bond makes the heat between the two astronomical. But it may also make you feel uncomfortable at times. If you like punish spankings that turn sensual there's a lot of that going on.

My head just wasn't in this one, for the first half of the story there was a desperate quality about her refusal that made it more uncomfortable than exciting to read. Even at the first turning point when she seems to accept him and the mating a few pages later she's back rejecting the claim and running off which is a bit confusing until that all of that settles down.

I liked that Sloan was a strong self sufficient woman but Gareth kept treating her as the opposite and then punishing her when she went against his orders. I had hopes that Gareth would start to work with his mate rather than make everything a dominance battle, that ended with him punishing her and that Sloan would find ways to work with Gareth, without publicly defying him, and it just doesn't happen.

I won a free copy of the audiobook on a Facebook giveaway.

ONE DELECTABLE JOURNEY!!!
Extremely enticing! Delta mesmerizes with this satisfying block busting bombshell with all the protective, possessive, alpha male deliciousness you can handle. She not only hit the motherload, she blasted the vault wide open in this delightfully, delectable wild ride. A swirling multitude of vexing circumstances and surprising events that leave you breathless, craving more. Pushing forward through the trials and tribulations along with a horde of twists and turns fuse this bad boy together beautifully. A spinning, twisting vortex of inadvertent happenstance and unforseen mishaps propels your spinning emotions into play fluidly. The drama, angst, intrigue, danger and suspense blaze through melding this bad boy together one jagged piece at a time. The chemistry is intense, sizzling and combustible. The characters personalities are authentic and realistic with traits and qualities that blend with one another in a perfect balance. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions you have no problem picturing each scenario creating a colorful backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Fantastic job Delta, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

Not much relationship but lots of punishment

So Overlord by Delta James was something mixed for me. I definitely really liked parts of the book and also hated other parts. This is the story of Gareth and Sloan. I adored Sloan and her ability to be strong in the face of everything, including her mate Gareth. But Gareth was a non-starter for me and I detested him. He was not a protective Alpha as he did not protect Sloan from himself. Instead it was much more like he owned her instead of her being his mate, even if she is human no reason to behave like he did. She does call him on his behavior and also calls him names but at the same time she gives in to him a bit too easily I felt.
So for me this story was not really what I was expecting and had a hard time reading it because of that. I know others will love the interactions and power dynamics between Gareth and Sloan so this is only my opinion and thoughts on the story.

I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

Sloan has been living with Rowan and her pack since being caught stealing. She tends to Rowan and the pack how ever she can. She wanders about how it feels to be a wolf but doesn't actually want to be one. Gareth comes to his brothers land to help ward off an attack and smells something good. He has a hard time trying to figure out what the smell is until he meets Sloan. Gareth knows that Sloan is his fated mate and sets about getting her. Sloan pushes Gareth away and runs away from him. Gareth is determined to change and claim Sloan and Sloan is just as determined to get away from him. Will Gareth win his feisty and stubborn mate? Must read to find out. I loved the hot steamy and action packed story. A fantastic addition to the series

Fated Mate

Enjoyed reading Garth and Sloans book .
The alpha of Ravenscar, the brother of Alaric who is mated Rowan.
Nice that it started where Warlord ended.
Love how the alpha's tame there fated mates . Even when they want to resist the alpha call.
Sloan was a human taken in by Rowan . When she was caught stealing because of her circumstance.
Garth thought he would get mild she-wolf again . But fates had something else in mind.
Excited to read the next book in this series. Love the dark erotic shifter romance.
This one click ebook. For everyone that loves shifter spanking and hot romance.

Gareth has gone to help his brother Alaric defeat an army marching to Alaric and Rowan's keep. While Gareth is there he looks to find a mate. He almost settles for second best again but keeps smelling something that has his wolf take notice. He finds Sloane. What a courtship. Adventure, drama, escapes, hiding, fighting, you name it Gareth and Sloane battle out their attraction for each other especially since Gareth has found his fated mate. Wow, is all I can say. This was such an outstanding story that I kept turning page after page. I will let you find out how it ends with Gareth and Sloane. Great Story. I can't get enough of this series. As with the wayward mates series I will binge it when the series ends to be able to live in the world.
We met Sloan in Warlord, she is a human and part of the pack at Calon Onest. When Gareth of Ravenscroft comes to help his brother he doesn't expect to meet his fated mate, he just wants a sweet, biddle wolf, not a bold outspoken human.
Enjoy the adventure of love and war, with a lot of sparks. If you like shifter romances you will love this one.

This book is utterly and completely addictive. Well written, entertaining and fully engaging. The characters keep you hooked from page to page, their interactions made me laugh and cringe, dependant on the circumstances. The setting was original, a mix of historic based in the technology free future. The storyline gripping, rolling from situation to incident, and back.
