Hearts of Stone #4

Taken by a Beast

Rate this book
He's a thief.

And what did he steal? Yours truly.

I get it that women are a hot commodity on this planet, but why me? It's not like there weren't others to choose from. Besides, I've just found my sister and I have no desire to be away from her.

But this alien doesn't take no for an answer - in English or in his language. So now I'm stuck in a new village with a bunch of Boraq who would rather see me dead than mated to their Masse.

However, the more time I spend with the infuriating male, the harder it is to plan my escape. If only I could find a way to stay alive and be his...

Assuming he will stop touching me long enough for me to properly think.

(*Contains nonconsensual spanking, but heroine is not bruised or emotionally scarred.)

Miranda Bridges began sneaking romance novels as a teenager and did not confess to reading them until she became a legal adult. After years and years as a voracious reader she woke up one day with a story in mind. She decided to write it down in order to silence her imaginary friends, but they’ve grown in number and have gotten louder. When she is not reading, writing, or drinking coffee she is taking care of two princesses who are of a reading age. Needless to say Miranda is still hiding romance books around the house, but now some of them have her name on the cover.

Charlotte and Rozak

Rozak is the Masse from the east and he kidnaps Charlotte. She is his mate. Charlotte helps bring their mother back. Still need to know what Shadow is, it's almost like a fertility god or something.

What ever happened to the other woman???

*I am a beta reader for this author and read this book before publication and copy was finalized*

I loved this book. From the very chapter I was hooked and I could not put it down after that! I just live for this world and these Boraq males! Why can’t I get one?!

I honestly feel like the author just completely stepped up her game. This book went outside of where the others went and you can see a clear difference in the story. I absolutely loved it and couldn’t get enough!

I liked this story more because I wanted to find out what happens to all of the Boraq tribes than because I was invested in these MC’s. I didn’t really like either MC to be honest.

I WANT TO BE AN ALIEN QUEEN!!!!
I have started to become obsessed with this author!
Most of us read romance or rom-com books as escapes. I don't want tears (or something realistic when I'm reading needing an escape) because I want to be lost into an awesome different world.
I love alien books because each author has their own world building and hierarchy. But Miranda just ticks these boxes for me.
I love how she started out with a certain series and then did a spin off. We get to see characters from the other books and it's just so awesome.
This book was no exception. I loved the "Lie to me" phrase. This is a really light "bdsm" ..which technically I wouldn't even really call it that. Just kind of more dirty than regular steam. Get me?
In book two we were introduced to Scarlett and her twin, Charlotte. This book is Charlotte and her kidnapper Masse from another tribe. There were some new alien races introduced and a pretty intense fighting scene, like in book 2.
I cannot wait for the other books to come out. I am going to go through Miranda's book list and just start reading her series.

This book was written from a single perspective, which was that of the human female’s, and not back-and-forth between the male and female. I found this format to be a breath of fresh air from the usual books with dual perspectives.

Written in first person by Miranda Bridges, Taken by a Beast is book 4 in The Hearts of Stone series, and follows the Boraq alien Masse (King) Rozak and his human mate Charlotte. This book picks up after the Dravian and Yalat war in The House of Kaimar series, and after Rozak infiltrated the southern village and kidnapped Charlotte in book 3. The Boraq were allies to the Dravians, and played a key role in helping them win the war against the Yalat. In exchange for their help, the Dravians gave the Boraq several unmated human women, Charlotte's sister Scarlett being one of them.

Charlotte was an artist. After her twin sister Scarlett was abducted and traded to the Boraq, her mate Draal made a deal with the Dravians for them to pick Charlotte up from Earth and bring her to Sulrim, requiring the sisters. It was utterly selfish on Draal's part because he refused to allow Scarlett to leave him after the shattering. Charlotte was more understanding and accepting of their new lives than Scarlett, just happy to be back with her sister, regardless of what planet. She befriended the resident skatnar (a creatur Sacred to the Boraq who Makayla named Shadow), which was a cross between toothless from How To Train Your Dragon and a cat. Shadow plays a key role in every book, and just like finding Waldo, I look forward to reading her role.

Rozak was the Masse (King) of the Eastern tribe. He initially planned to scout the southern Masse’s resources and then devise a plan to take them. But after catching Charlotte's scent, he infiltrated the village and kidnapped her, then brought her back to his territory. His village suffered losses after the initial illness brought on by the humans, including the death of his father and previous Masse. As a result, his mother had turned into a mute that behaved similarly to a human with dementia. Because they basically lost both parents to the illness, his brother Velrin was not welcoming to Charlotte the least bit. Neither was Rozak's ex lover Nyota.

Boraq's were Gargoyle-like aliens that lived in the jungles of the planet Sulrim. They were seven feet tall with wings and a tail. Their dark gray skin, the color of night, had a purple undertone, kind of like an eggplant. From the moment of their birth, every male was born with a heart encased in stone. The female's heart beats freely, calling to their other half. It is a song that can only be echoed by the male destined to be bound to her. When the male hearts hear the song, the stone barrier cracks and disintegrates, leaving the male’s heart free to answer. It is known as the "shattering.” Once they marry, it’s for life, and the only way a marriage can be undone is if a male finds his mate during the shattering. (Basically, their heart doesn't start beating until after they have sex with their heartmate.) However, that hadn't happen since the mating instinct had long died, along with most of their women from an illness brought to their planet by a previous batch of human servants. The illness killed most women and children, leaving the Boraq skeptical of all humans.

Charlotte was Rozak's one true heartmate, verified by the shattering. The couple officially had sex in chapter 11, at the 62% mark, which was WAY too damn long of a wait. I understood the symbolism behind the wait, in that Rozak had a reputation for having an abundance of patience, which he often used to his advantage. But I read this genre of books specifically for the raunch. Delaying sexual intercorse anytime after the 48% mark is like dangling the cheese so long it molds. Thankfully, the sex scenes were fire.🔥🔥🔥

Long before Charlotte gave Rozak her body, she made an attempt to escape, which had her almost eaten by a giant sea creature. Rozak saved her just in the nick of time, but not without consequences. It took several days for the poison to clear from his body, which left Charlotte at the mercy of the spiteful villagers. After Rozak was fully healed, she was once again safe from their mistreatment. After the shattering, Nyota almost attacked her. But after Charlotte got their mother Tamli to speak coherently through art therapy, she earned the awe and respect from Rozak's brother Velrin. Charlotte was still missing her twin sister, so Rozak agreed to return her personally to Scarlett, knowing that Masse Jaxar might kill him in the process. But fate had other plans. When the southern village was attacked by the western Boraq (who brought reinforcements) the north, south and western tribes came together to fight. Everything worked out in the end, with the couple having a baby in the oven.

Surprising, I didn't have any pet peeves with this book. I thought it was written beautifully. In fact, Charlotte's personality and outlook had me chuckling quite a few times. I really liked her character.

So far, this series is worth the read, if this genre of books is in your wheelhouse. It had the perfect balance of adventure and romance. I can't wait to dive in to the next (and possibly final?) book of the series. 🫶

The ending was not complete as the author did leave part of the storyline unanswered. However, it will probably pick back up in a future book.

Book four "Taken by the Beast," revolves around Masse Rozak of the Eastern Borak tribe and Charolette, belonging to the Southern Masse Jaxems' tribe ("Chosen by a Beast.") Rozak, who was originally on a recon mission to investigate the southern tribes' resources, happens upon Charolette out for an evening walk. When Rozak grasps Charolette's arm to prevent her from running, his plans go "out the window" and, instead, kidnaps Charolette and returns to his tribe. Below is a quick synopsis of what provoked a variety of emotions for me, in "TBTB" and, the series that keeps me saying "next." The "men" are muscular gargoyles in appearance, with a tail that becomes a third "hand" during a battle and when needed (nudge-nudge-wink-wink) Their hearts are encased in stone, silent, until they meet their "Silana," (fated mates), who then have their unwavering attraction, until their deaths. When I read how the Borak search for their "Silana," I had a good chuckle, thinking to myself that men's pickup lines would vastly improve if they were to read this series! The "Silanas" are feisty with strong personalities, fiercely loyal to one another, and give as good as they get! Ms. Bridges' choice of language, particularly during the bantering between Rozak and Charolette, the "cracking," their erotic loves scenes and the beautiful moments between Rozak, Charolette, Velrin and Tamli, ensnares the readers' five senses so thoroughly, you practically become that "fly-on-the-wall"!! Although the books can be read individually, with how much the tribes interact and the "Silanas" shake things up, you would deny yourself the enjoyment of this incredible journey!!

THESE LITTLE NUGGETS. Honest, havent been reading as much during the quarantine. I worked from home before all this started and so I still go to work every day. BUT. BUT. I have a kid who is home from school as well. So my hours are now cut in half so I can also mom and school and lunch lady and dj because, you guessed it, husband deployed in January. He has missed ALL the fun back here in the states and is in some weird Special Ops bubble in the middle east sitting on mountains of TP and hand sanitizer. Of course he is.

NOW! I prefaced this, with all my life issues of the moment, to tell you that I most definitely took time to read #4. It did not disappoint. It had all the sass and love and masculinity as all the rest in this series but somehow all the little puzzle pieces aligned into one of my most favs from this author. The mom moment in the woods was probably my fav, which is weird to say about a romance book but it was so much LOVE honey!

They read quickly but are complete and for a busy mom during this scary, ridiculous, aggravating and sometimes, boring, time, these stories are just right. Its like that morning cup of coffee. Its but a moment but it is one of the best of the entire day.

Hope you all found TP but if not you can blame my husband. It makes ME feel better!

Abducted from earth, then after reuniting with her sister, she is kidnapped again!

Written for mature readers only (18+ years old) due to subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy intimate scenes and violence such as abduction, kidnapping, fighting with some to the death, etc.

This is the 4th story in the series and I highly recommend this be read in series order for maximum reader satisfaction and to prevent spoilers as there are reoccurring characters and an overall storyline arc.

Also, this story begins before the end of the previous story, when Rozar, the Masse of the Eastern tribe, kidnaps Charlotte from the Southern tribe, where she has been staying since being abducted from earth to be with her twin sister.

He was doing surveillance so he knew the best way to attack the Southern tribe when he came across Charlotte. Rozar knew as soon as he seen her that she was his fated mate, the one destined to “unlock” his stone heart through what his people called the shattering. He also knew that she changed everything ... then in an attempted coup, some of his warriors attacked some of the other warriors. Even though they were unsuccessful in killing him, they still may have managed to start a war between the two groups ...

This series just keeps getting better.
I excited to read book 5 Loved by a Beast when it released this summer.
I love that each character Has a very distinctive voice, so there is never any confusion about who is talking.I

'Oh, fuck me. My kidnapper is a Masse? That translates to power and authority, which means he’s used to getting what he wants. No wonder he stole me. “And you know the rules,” the stranger continues. “We don’t allow those diseased pests here.” He jerks his chin in my direction. It takes everything I have not to respond in any way. I know it would be foolish to think I could take on this male, or any Boraq for that matter, but I want to so badly. Just one good punch to the face would be good. With a baseball bat. Or a bulldozer.'

'As we engage in the battle of wills, I take the time to really study his face. His dark brows are angled, giving him one hell of a resting bitch face. Does that term apply to men? Maybe a resting dick face is more accurate. '

'Conclusion: if this guy thinks I’m his silana, then I better prepare myself for some alien dick.'

The saga of the human females with the Boraq tribes continues with story of Rozak and Charlotte. Rozak, who is the king of the East Tribe, sees Charlotte while on a scouting trip. He steals her away to his village, while he decides what to do. He is sure that she is his heart mate. Charlotte is the twin sister of Scarlett who we first encountered in Tamed by a Beast. Amidst this drama, the Western Tribe has hired mercenaries and attacks Jaxar’s Southern Tribe. Charlotte loves her sister, but she’s also falling in love with Rozak. Is there a way she can have it all without her heart breaking?

Loved, loved, loved this book. There’s a lot of humor in this book, which is always a plus with me. And of course a very hot, alpha male. We get a little more insight as to the horror that the previous human virus wreaked on another Boraqian tribe. I really enjoyed the scenes where the 3 kings, and their mates, are in the same tent discussing Rozak’s fate, and their resolution to how to face the threat from the West.

I highly recommend this book, and the series.

Okay, but . . .

This is one of those books you have to read the entire series to completely understand. I've read them all but it's been years since I read the last one, and now I understand why. Overall the series is entertaining, the triggers are pretty mild but I'm not one for females who give their resistance lip service and mixed messages with their actions. In fact I hate that. Mean what you say say what you do.

The second issue I had with this: I couldn't remember why the Western tribes and the mercenaries were attacking. I didn't remember anything about them and this book didn't even give one line of explanation, and even though a recap would be redundant for those binge reading the entire series when the books are published years apart writing this as a true standalone with just enough explanation about the action that's occurring and brief concise recaps or re-introductions to each character wouldn't hurt.

This book 4 in the Hearts of Stone Series was an awesomely well-written book that I really enjoyed that has exceptionally crafted characters. The story and characters hooked me from the beginning and I could not stop reading until late at night. I loved the characters while watching them grow together and they went well together. I found this book fascinating with great word building which made me feel apart of the story as it unfolded in front of me. A must read for any fan of Alien Romances and this was a great conclusion to the series

Who needs sleep anyway? I should've known better than to start reading this book at bedtime! Charlotte and Raxar's story started with a kidnapping, as most good abduction stories do, and then it just kept getting better and better. His brother, dude, I hated him for most of the book. But Raxar? That guy was steadfast, relentless, and determined to win Char over. There was a lot going on, it fills in some more gaps from the previous stories as well as setS up some more future love stories. I'm just going to keep on reading this series, thinking that they are each the best one yet, until the new one releases. Don't judge me, lol, I know I have issues!

Charlotte has just connected with her sister when she is kidnapped by Rozak who decides he is going to keep her no matter what everyone else thinks. Things are not going to go smoothly for them, although Charlotte does find it getting more difficult to resist him. Will they finally give in to their attraction? How stubborn does Charlotte intend to be?

I love good humorous sci-fi so this was a fun book to read. There was plenty of sizzling chemistry going on to help these guys convince their silanas that a HEA is waiting right here for them! Grab your copy and enjoy!

This is a story of drama, danger and romance. Charlotte is settling in nicely now that she is with twin sister Charlotte only to get kidnapped by Rozak who is a leader in another village. He tells her she is his mate and will start is heart, but she not so sure and wants to go back to her sister who is pregnant. I loved these endearing characters and Tamli who pulled at my heartstrings.

I really enjoyed this book! I loved the heroine. Her thoughts and her mouth cracked me up. She is brave, funny, stubborn and compassionate. I liked Rozak as well, he is fierce and protective. The story is interesting, there was some drama and action, and lots of love! I haven't read the previous books of this series, but I intend to right this wrong immediately ;)

I'm listening to this audiobook version but the narrator (Rachel Music) is killing it for me (not in the good way...). I really don't like her inflections and pacing, it makes for a very annoying experience and I'm so distracted by her narration that I can't pay attention to what's actually happening. For now, I'm DNFing and considering getting the ebook instead to use TTS computer generated voice to read it.

There is wit, humour, action, suspense, tension and more. Stone aliens with wings are given human women for a chance at mates. They will do what ever it takes to keep them safe.
Women kidnapped not once but twice find themselves with a gargoyle race. Its either embrace them or run screaming from the hills. But to be a part of them they must show their strength to be part of the tribe. Will the tribe accept them or not.

A quick and fun read.

I had fun reading Charlotte and Rozak's story. The way he "tamed" and courted Charlotte was a lot fun. There were those that opposed her being the massela but Charlotte surprised them with just being himself. What Rozak did for love made me swoon, I loved that Boraq. Actually, they are all lovable.

Just finished Taken by the Beast, I had to wait until I was in the proper mood for it. Each of the books in this series is moving and entertaining and funny and just awesome! I would love to live in their world just so I could see what happens with all my favorite human & gargoyle pairs, and every new couple that finds each other. ❤️❤️

I am really enjoying this series! And Book 4, is the best in the series, so far. The main characters, Charlotte and Rozak are fabulous! Charlotte is witty, snarky, and very strong willed. Rozak is strong, charming and determined. Love their interactions and steamy romance! Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Fast paced alien abduction

This is one of the Best stories of this series. I enjoyed all the action adventure. The sex was slightly more hot than the rest of the books. I enjoyed the sea visit, and the painting in this book, but the hints of bondage and dominance were what moved this into the best story of this series for me.

Razor has come to a enemy village to ask for help. Before things get that far he sees Charlotte and recognizes his Mate. So he steals her. Bad move Masse!

As humans brought the disease that ravaged his tribe, Charlotte is not overwhelmingly received but hey every relationship starts off rocky right?

Taken by a Beast

Here we go again, Ms Bridges has written another good book for this series. I don't know what I was thinking when I started this series but I have no regrets. I wasn't sure I would like it, but I've found a new type of Alien to read about. I'm impressed with this series.

Plus this entire series is heart warming, leaves me grinning and wanting more. It's not just the hot Aliens, I seriously want to be besties with the women.
