Lady Katherine Regency Matchmaker #5

Murder on Charles Street

Rate this book
Lady Katherine’s happiness at her newfound independence is shattered by the death of her elderly neighbor, Doctor Gammon. The doctor had become a trusted friend and had confided in Katherine that something about a former patient’s case had been bothering him.

Was it any coincidence he’d ended up dead the very next day?

Katherine doesn’t think so, especially when she discovers the case files he’d been scrutinizing the night before his death seem to have disappeared.

But with her maid Harriett focusing on the vile concoctions she makes for supper, her detecting partner Pru too wrapped up in her fiancee and upcoming wedding plans and her Bow Street runner friend Lyle embroiled in the official investigation, Lady Katherine has only one friend who seems interested in investigating - Captain Wayland.

Her father would have a fit if he knew Katherine was conferring on a case with the handsome Captain, but Lady Katherine will stop at nothing to bring her friend’s killer to justice.

When the case takes a disturbing turn, even Wayland can’t help, and Lady Katherine has only her wits - and her pug Emma - to relay on in order to prevent becoming the next victim.

This is another Lady Katherine Regency Mystery. Lady Katherine has very recently moved into her own place with her lady's maid, Harriet who is now also housekeeper and cook (much to Katherine's dismay). She's become friends with an elderly neighbor, Doctor Gammon, who's recently retired. When his part-time housekeeper finds him dead the day after Katherine had consulted with him about her dog Emma, Katherine suspects foul play.

Lady Katherine's the only one who suspects Doctor Gammon's death is anything but from natural causes. None of her friends believe her theory, and even Bow Street has declared his death as "natural causes". Katherine believes it has something to do with an old case that was bothering the doctor, now if she could get her hands on the files, but how's she going to get into the house?

The gang is altogether, but not necessarily to solve a murder--Pru and Lord Annandale are planning their upcoming wedding, Bow Street runner Lyle, is officially a part of the investigation so he can't help, that leaves Captain Wayland. Katherine still doesn't understand why her father dislikes the man, but she can't let him find out they're working together. After Katherine injures her ankle and can't walk, the gang all chip in to help solve the case.

This wasn't one of my favorites of Lady Katherine's adventures, although I enjoy that she's protesting less about Captain Wayland--I think she's finally admitting to herself she's beginning to feel something for the man. I'm very curious to find out why her father dislikes him and no clues have been given about that. This one didn't hold my interest like these books usually do, although the murderer did surprise me, and the reason behind it. Katherine really needs to have a frank talk with Harriet about her lack of cooking skills, then hire a cook before she starves to death.

This was delightful.
I sincerely hope this series hasn't been canceled. I've truly enjoyed the characters and the team approach to the crimes.
I eagerly await Pru's wedding.
Fingers crossed there's a book 6 in the future.

I love Cozy Mysteries, especially historical Cozy Mysteries and when I want to read one I grab one by Leighann Dobbs, she is the Queen of Cozy Mysteries in my book! I've been reading the Lady Katherine Regency Murder series for a bit now and have finally finished it with Murder on Charles Street, I'm sorry to say. I'm really going to miss all these characters who've become part of my life over these 5 books. They've all been wonderfully entertaining and fun to read and Murder on Charles Street was no different.

In this one Lady Katherine has moved out of her father's home and is finally getting her wish of living independently. Her profession is known as a matchmaker, but her passion is working as a detective, just like her father and he's taught her well. This comes in handy in this one when her old and welcoming neighbor is found dead in his home. It looks like natural causes, but Lady Katherine thinks otherwise. Along with her gang of crime fighters that include her dog Emma, her lady's maid Harriet and her other close friends and acquaintances she begins delving into the who, what and why of her neighbor's death.

The trouble begins when the death is determined to be natural causes, or even the possibility of suicide, but that's not sitting well with Katherine. She was just with the old man and he expressed such positivity and want for his future, she knows he'd never kill himself. The search begins for the killer and knowing Katherine no stone will be left unturned. Also, knowing Katherine she'll end up in a bit of hot water while investigating and have to count on her cohorts to get her out.

These stories are quick reads because you just can't put them down. They are fun, exciting and the characters are easy to like and get to know. I love that the supporting characters in these books are all the same too, so the reader knows who all these outside people in the story are after reading the the first books, but you could read them as a stand alone too, I guess. However, I'd suggest reading them in order to get the maximum benefit of the character development from each story. This series by Dobbs is one of many she's written and it's of a historical nature, but if you're not into historical cozy mysteries she's got several that take place in current day. If cozy is what you're interested in you've got to pick up a Leighann Dobbs book, you'll be so happy you did and you'll find a whole new library of books you can't put down! Plus they're just so much fun to read! Happy Reading!

3.5 stars.

Again, it was ok. There seems to be a running joke going on .

I confess the cases haven't been that interesting and neither have the protagonists pique my continuing interest in the series. As this is the latest one, I guess I may come back to it further down the line when there are more books. We shall see.

This is the fifth book in the Lady Katherine Regency Mysteries by Leighann Dobbs and Harmony Williams. Each adventure of Lady Katherine Irvine gets better. Lady Katherine wants to be an investigator like her father, the Earl of Dorchester. However, women were not accepted as investigators during her time so she worked under the disguise of a matchmaker. Lady Katherine has moved out of her father's house with her maid, Harriet and her pug, Emma to gain her indepenfdence. Emma has eaten some of Lady Katherine's notes and is not feeling well. Lady Katherine takes her to her neighbor at 4 Charles Street, Dr. Stuart Gammon, who has retired as a physician and is not doctoring animals.
When Dr. Gammon is found in his study by his housekeeper, Mrs. Campbell, Lady Katherine is the second person to see the body. She feels he has been murdered. Constable Gregson and Lyle Murphy from Bow Street think he died of natural causes or committed suicide and do not want to investigate.
Lady Katherine is sure he has been murdered and enlists the help of Harriet, her best friend Prudence Burwick, Pru's fiance', Lord Annandale, his valet, McTavish and Captain Dorian Wayland, a fellow investigator.
I enjoy how the relationships between these friends have grown in each book. The group of friends work well together to solve each mystery.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries. Each book could be read as a standalone. I received an advance copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Murder on Charles Street is Book 5 in the Lady Katherine Regency Mysteries.

I absolutely love this historical mystery series. Lady Katherine is no longer in her father's home she is now with her maid and her pug in order to be more independent. Lady Katherine is a fine investigator though that wasn't really allowed so she pretends to be a matchmaker.

The plot is well thought out with a few twists that I enjoyed.
The characters are well developed and the relationships between the different characters have developed nicely over the course of the books.

This book can be read as a standalone mystery, but I would recomend reading the other books in the series as they are equally fantastic!

Murder on Charles Street is Book 5 in the Lady Katherine Regency Mysteries written by Leighann Dobbs and Harmony Williams. Lady Katherine Irvine is now living on her own with her maid and her pug. Being an investigator isn’t allowed for females so she presents herself as a matchmaker. I recently saw Emma and found many similarities.

Lady Katherine’s vet is a retired physician. Dr. Gammon is found in his study by his housekeeper, Mrs. Campbell, dead. Lady Katherine is convinced it is murder.

See how the crew Katherine enlists to help her solve the mystery even with the plot twist and turns.

I received an advance copy of this book and am not required to leave a positive review.

When is Number 6 Coming OUT?

Lady Katherine Regency Detective Series is a wonderful series. I couldn’t put any of them down. As a matter of fact, when I was finished with one, I would start the next one right away! I read all five in a four day period! When is the next one coming out???

Each story is a refreshing look at a mystery. Lady Katherine and her group of friends have a lovely way of finding clues and finding romance along the way!

If you like romance stories and you like mysteries, I guarantee you will love these stories.

This wasn't my favorite Lady Katherine book, to be honest. Whereas it still had an intriguing plot about her neighboring doctor who she had become friends with, I felt like it was just long and drawn out. Katherine is injured for most of the book, her friends are acting as if they don't care about her suspicions even though before, her best friend jumped at the mention of a mystery and I actually figured out who did it long before the end of the book.

Still a good read and I look forward to seeing more of Lady Katherine as I do love the series.

A few thoughts:

I understand Lady Katherine wanting to have her own home but she could take a little time to furnish and decorate it. She will have people visiting, even overnight. Also get some more hep! Have Harriet take cooking lessons and hire a housekeeper and a couple maids, maybe a butter would be good especially to help with murderous visitors! Over all I enjoy these books. Thanks for writing them.

Whole series has been delightful but I am so concerned I don’t see any more books announced to conclude! It feels like so much great character development and tension for no payoff. Please release a final book to wrap this great series up 🙏

It's odd..

All the usual problems abound.. but this is slow, drawn out and a bit boring..

Katherine is the only one convinced that it's murder when her elderly neighbour Dr Gammon is found dead by his housekeeper. No one wants to listen, even Lyle doesn't particularly seem bothered despite there being too many issues with the death.

Pru, Harriet, Annandale, Wayland and MacTavish all offer to help especially after Katherine injures herself.

Lots of totally inappropriate behaviour with single male visitors, Pru and Annandale riding around unaccompanied, Katherine receiving all night visits from assorted groups of her friends.

Harriet is allegedly single handedly running the house, cleaning, washing, cooking, laundry the lot and still has time to be ladies maid to Katherine who is oblivious to the workload Harriet now has other than to moan about the food in her head.. nope.. Katherine has always been portrayed as well aware and a considerate employer who notices everything.. right down to her maid's hands and who buys her hand cream, Katherine tells us over and over how she's so observant.. no one is more observant than her.. yet she's oblivious to Harriet and the long running Wayland situation.. just get on with it.. it's lost all credibility

This series is primarily a detective / mystery series that follows our protagonist Lady Katherine, daughter of an Earl, as she uses matchmaking as cover to hide her sleuthing among the ton. This review is more a reflection of the series than individual books as with series like this (at least for me) the mystery is really just an excuse to revisit the characters and the little pocket of the world they inhabit. The mysteries don't really amount to anything special or memorable, but if you like the characters you won't mind spending time with them as they solve the next case. The romances are slow-burn, extending over several books.

Lady Katherine Regency Matchmaker Series
Book 1: An Invitation to Murder
Book 2: The Baffling Burglaries of Bath
Book 3: Murder at the Ice Ball
Book 4: A Murderous Affair
Book 5: Murder on Charles Street
Book 6:

Series Overview (thus far)
I read the first 5 books and they definitely fall under the cozy murder mystery genre, where the mysteries are more of a means to revisit our cast of characters as they develop closer relationships and friendships as they solve crimes. Even though the series is called the 'matchmaker' series, the matchmaking is really an afterthought and is barely taken seriously (by her), it is almost farcical how easily she is able to setup love matches, as she really puts as little effort into them as she can get away with - her entire focus is being a detective.

In the first book our MC Lady Katherine makes a deal with her father that if she can solve the case of the Pink Ribbon Killer before her 25th birthday, he will release her dowry directly to her so she can live her own life on her own terms (ie without getting married).

In the second book, Lady Katherine agrees to play matchmakers for Prudence (from book 1) and the two travel to Bath, where the real attraction is a series of baffling burglaries. Prudence, ends up accepting a proposal from Lord Annandale, Captain Wayland's best friend.

In book third book, Lady Katherine literally has a woman fall dead at her feet. Among the list of suspects is Katherine's newest client, Lord Bath (from book 2), how can she find him a match in good faith if he might be a killer! Her new friend Prudence is also taking an interest in detecting and in playing matchmaker for Katherine. And a love triangle starts to form around Harriet between bow street runner Lyle and Annondale's valet, Mctavish.

In the fourth book, Lady Lucy wants to solve a murder of a maid as research for her latest novel, this turns into a wager between the boys (Wayland, Annondale, and Mctavish) and girls (Katherine, Prue, and Harriet) on who will solve the case first - Lyle, stays neutral. I found this mystery to be the most interesting of the 5 first novels. Poor Wayland and poor Harriet... recognizing love isn't easy.

In the fifth book, Lady Katherine has finally moved out into her own home and has become good friends with her new neighbor, Doctor Gammon - who is troubled over a old case of his. The next day he is found dead from an apparent suicide. Katherine knows that can't be true and sets out to prove that he was murdered and find his killer. This is made a little more difficult in that her latest client has shown an interest in one of her suspects, the doctor's son. It is nice to see Katherine warming up to Wayland, but at this point she is being willfully ignorant of the obvious... literally everyone has hinted in subtle and not too subtle ways that he like her... how she still can't see it... as for Harriet, it is a hard choice trustworthy and steady vs the charming bad-boy... it is clear who she is most affected by, well I await book 6 :)

I like cozy mystery series and find these kinds of books light and easy reading. They are like reading an episode of your favorite TV detective series. There is nothing really that remarkable with the mysteries in this series, the cast of characters is likable enough. The 'romance' is a real slow-burn, so not as satisfying, especially since it is sooo obvious, even all the other characters recognize that they would be 'perfect' for each other.

I tend to be less harsh on books that are what they are. This is a particular type of mystery series that either you enjoy or not based mostly on the characters and setting. If I had to make a criticism, it is that Katherine is quite impatient and stubborn often takes unnecessary risks much too often, but as it seems to be a part of her character, it is hard to really criticize it... it is just facepalming when she literally confronts the killers and needs to be rescued over and over again (no, not by Wayland)... she is even aware of the danger but can't help but do it anyway in the heat of the moment. But, perhaps that is how her friends will finally convince her she and Wayland need to partner up, she needs someone watching her back, professionally speaking, at the very least.

*** Light Fun Read
Easy and enjoyable read. Nothing really remarkable or new, but worth reading if you like the genre and/or author. Baseline for most books I read, they are neither good nor bad, they are simply a light fun read.

This book was a tad slower getting into than the first four, but still one of my favorite Lady Detective series'. I'm very eager to see what happens in the next book. Does Lady Katherine get more furniture for her house, how does Pru's wedding go, what happens next with she and Wayland and do they end up working on investigations together now that Pru will be in Scotland...so many unanswered questions!

I also agree with many other comments about the need for additional help in the house...I found it very odd that throughout the whole of this book, despite being such good friends with her maid Harriet, why is Katherine so oblivious to how tired and overworked Harriet is? If nothing else, Katherine desperately needs a cook, and maybe even a butler.

Murder on Charles Street (Lady Katherine Regency Mysteries, #5) — Leighann Dobbs and Harmony Williams/Narrator: Beverley A. Crick (23 chapters) June 17, 2023

Lady Katherine has a new home that she shares with her maid Harriette and Emma the pug.

While Harriette thinks she has to do it all and is wearing down, Katherine wants to hire a cook to not only lift the burden from her friend but also get better cooking, which is not Hariette’s specialty.

But all that comes to a halt when Katherine’s favorite neighbor, a doctor, dies shortly after talking to her.

Again, everyone thinks the man accidentally killed himself by drinking too much medicine, but Katherine thinks it seems odd.

I am enjoying this series.

An excellent narrator too!

Five stars.

Seeing how this was published 4 years ago with nothing past #5, I fully expected this to be the last book in this series. I’m annoyed to learn that it’s not! This book did not tie everything up neatly like I was anticipating after seeing how quickly they were published in succession.

I still want to know why Katherine’s dad hates Wayland (though I don’t think he ever did or at least he doesn’t anymore)? How has her dad and stepmom not heard around “the Ton” that she’s always with Wayland? Will Pru and Annandale ever tie the knot? Will Lyle ever be able to talk to women? Will Katherine finally realize she likes Wayland? Will Emma ever get the credit she deserves for being the real detective in these books? Why did these 2 authors stop writing this series so long ago?

Pleasant enough

Lady Katherine is going to injure herself leaping to conclusions. And the “tension” between herself and Wayland is becoming tiresome. Actually, it was tiresome 4 books ago. They could have become a crime-solving partnership in book 2 and probably would have improved the storyline.
Occasional odd word choices by the authors, as in, that word doesn’t mean what you seem to think it does. Thankful that the odd “cursing” by our protagonist was much less prevalent in this book.

One of my least favorite of the series. I still enjoyed the banter and some parts were good. But this book felt rather forced. It wasn't entirely what I had in mind. It almost seems like the series is getting away from the author. I really enjoyed the first book and wished for more like it. Katherine ACTUALLY using the matchmaking facade to solve a crime or murder. It feels like an afterthought in the stories (the first not included).
I'm still here to see a conclusion to the Wayland issue...I was really hoping to see more of that resolved. Hopefully another one comes out soon.

I've read all 5 books in this series, and enjoyed the plots and the development of the characters overall.
However, Lady Katherine's personal goal to be independent, have her own house, be acknowledged -- maybe only among friends -- as a topnotch investigator has led her more and more into a pushy, whiny, spaced-out woman. I mean, in every book she trips or runs smack-dab into another person.
She constantly runs scenarios through her mind while not listening or paying attention to her friends. I think the writer seriously dismissed this character. Too bad!

Murder by neighbor

Katherine neighbor Dr Gammon was dead no one thought it was murder except her! He was found in his chair with important papers missing! Just when I thought I would FINALLY see some physical interaction with Katherine and Wayland ummm not!!! I give up on her she deserves spinster status! Never have I said that before!!! Everyone else has given up that it's not murder then the murderer shows their face!! Will anyone save Katherine from her own folly?

First let me say I do love the storylines of the Lady Katherine Regency Mysteries. It’s why I stuck it out for five bucks; hoping the character would develop and the editing improve.

Also the narrator if you listen to these by audiobook is excellent.

Beyond that the hubris of Lady Catherine is amazing. She is described as intelligent but the writing proves the opposite. She is narrowminded, arrogant, doesn’t seem to grow or learn from her mistakes. Maybe I would feel she learned from her mistakes if she ever really admitted to them. The inconsistencies in the writing or nonstop. I think that may be the passing back-and-forth between two writers but the editors fail to catch this.

My dislike of the character and the distraction of the inconsistencies take away the joy from reading this series.

Katherine, her best friend Pru, her maid Harriet and her dog Emma have discovered another murder to solve. It is wonderful reading about women (and doggie) detectives from back in a day when most detectives were men. I felt warm as I read this story, enjoying every word.

I love this series! Lady Katherine is such an interesting young woman. I enjoy seeing how she works clues out in her head. I also enjoy the twists and turns of her investigations. This book can be read alone, but I would suggest that you start with the first book in the series to see how Lady Katherine and her relationships with her family and friends develop.

The strong female character in Regency novels has always drawn me in! Lee and Harmony make a very creative team when writing together. I have enjoyed each of the books in this series and eagerly await the next book, where hopefully, Lady Kathern discovers her feelings for Lord Waylan.

Natural death of murder

Lady Katherine's neighbor is found dead the morning after treating her sick dog Emma. Was it natural causes, or murder? Lady K is sure it's murder and convinces her friends to help her solve the mystery. Pretty straightforward, not many twists to the story.

This is a cute series; improbable but a pleasant escape. Until this book. The series spun its wheels with this one. Characters did not move forward or show growth. The interactions were shallow and static. With a change in location there was much potential, all unrealized.
I hope the author rights the ship with book 6.

I enjoyed and love Lady Katherine book series. Her incites on her detective work is inspirational. Her love matches are exciting. Especially, her own situation with the captain. They both act like they are scare to pursue their own feelings. Maybe some excitement needs to happen between Harriet and McTavish and others.
