This is a prequel novella for AC Cobble's new The Cartographer Series. It takes place 20 years prior to the main tale and covers an important event in the lives of our young heroes and their world.
The fate of empire is to crumble from within.
A heinous murder in a small village reveals a terrible truth. Sorcery, once thought dead in Enhover, is not. Evidence of an occult ritual and human sacrifice proves that dark power has been called upon again. Twisting threads of clues lead across the known world to the end of a vast empire, and then, the trail returns home.
Duke Oliver Wellesley, son of the king, cartographer, and adventurer, has better things to do than investigate a murder in a sleepy fishing hamlet. For Crown and Company, though, he goes where he’s told. As the investigation leads to deeper and darker places, he’ll be forced to confront the horrific spectres rising from the shadows of his past. When faced with the truth, will he sacrifice what is necessary to survive?
Samantha serves a Church that claims to no longer need her skills. She’s apprenticed to a priest-assassin that no one knows. Driven by a mad prophecy, her mentor has prepared her for a battle with ultimate darkness, except, sorcery is dead. When all is at stake, can she call upon an arcane craft the rest of the world has forgotten?

I read this book after reading Quill, as it advises you to do and all I can say is, thank the Lord i didn't read it before!! Virtually every page has some silly mistake. Constantly the wrong word used e.g there instead of their!!! The stories are great, especially Sacrifice, as it does bring some of the past histories, into clarity and the same with some of the others!! But missing words to incorrect words being used the entire of the time!! I'm so disappointed by it just as my title states!!! But if I had read this prior to Quill, I would not have bought the Cartographer series at all!! The reason being, that I'd have assumed it to be just as awful!! After all who would want to read almost 1,600 pages of incorrect words, missing words or words that just are not needed!! If anything I'd tell you to just skip this book and read the other three!! You won't really miss anything as you can get by without reading the history within the book, as it doesn't take anything away or need to read it to understand Quill and i can't see how you would need to read it for the other two!! The books can stand without this this one!! What I would love to know is, just how I found very little wrong with a novel of 522 pages and yet so many silly little slips-ups in a book of 179 pages!! Surely a little proof reading or semi decent editing would have ensured that almost all of it was corrected!!! Please leave this novella and read the actual novels and enjoy those, otherwise you'll be left wondering how this one ever got published when the author is clearly brilliant !! Maybe one of my new favourite authors now!!
I enjoy the way the book way laid out. Gave you a feel of what’s to come. Very interesting how each character was described and what their intention are. Looking forward to reading the next in series
