When I found out this exists, I was not expecting to fall in love with it or adore it, but I just finished reading this "volume 0", and I have to say that so far I think it's my favorite installation in the series?! No shade thrown on Hanzo and Usagi, but this volume is just incredibly adorable and absolutely stole my heart for Hanzou and Sara. I'm not even sure that I can review this coherently, I'm just going to babble about how cute it is~.
A ninja-historical-romance-with-hints-of-comedy? Yes, please. I probably wouldn't have picked this up on a normal day, but it was on four of my Recommended lists (I separate my manga by genre), so I had to give it a go. It was a pleasant surprise. This being a prequel, I am not quite sure how the series will start off. The story was quite complete, but I'll read on, that's for sure. The story starts off mostly on the romantic note, as the main character Kaguya, who is suffering from amnesia, is introduced as working in the red-light district during the Waring States Era. The main guy, a frequent customer, Hanzou, happens to spot her and it all unravels from there. Even though Kaguya is not a prostitute, he's drawn to her, and soon realizes the scar she has on her back (which she obviously does not remember how she got it) was from his sword. Another spill down a slope brings back Kaguya's, now Sara's, memory, and the real trouble begins. She's actually a highly skilled ninja assassin, and Hanzou is on the wrong side. Though Sara/Kaguya lacked a little bit of depth at the beginning, she comes around very well. Hanzou, though a little lecherous, is fun, and they make a good pair.
I loved this! I was surprised by how much I liked this. I wasn't sure if it was wise to read a prequel before the series. Sometimes prequels are meant to be read after the fact. I know that is counter-intuitive, but that is what I have noticed. Regardless, I'm glad I read and started with this.
'Tsuki No Toiki Ai No Kizu' is a side prelude story for 'Tail of the Moon'. I was really impressed with how Ueda tied loose ends in Tail of the Moon with this story. Good to read as a stand alone, a must read for fans of 'Tail of the Moon'.
I love when series does a prequel or epilogue volume that focuses on other characters. This was actually my first taste of Tail in the Moon back when it was publishing chapters in Shojo Beat.
The plot does move very quickly and Sara is a bit of a Mary Sue, but it's still enjoyable nonetheless. And though Hanzou does come off as a player at the start, he more or less redeems himself in his commitment to Sara (though it does cause some character assassination with the main series and some of his actions). I'm glad we got to explore more of their relationship as well as Sara and Hanzo's past together.
Overall plot’s good. Romance was a little insta-lovish, I guess for the sake of moving the action along. MeToo movement would have a problem with hero being super forward. I don’t mind stolen kisses, but only if the characters know each other well/have been friends for a long tjme/there’s already trust and hints at longing between both characters. Not just, “I’m going to kiss you now, woman!” Especially towards a chick who’s an in-charge, lady ninja.
It was way too “insta-lovey” for me. And after reading the entire Tail of the Moon series, I’m still adamant that Hanzou isn’t a great character, nor is he a good partner for Sara. He never gives up being lecherous despite what they went through. While I appreciate the backstory, it provides little change in my attitudes toward the characters in the main series. If there was more build up into the relationship, my opinion would be different. I would skip this one.
2.5 stars– have had this for years and finally picked it up, the art style is cute! the story is also silly and enjoyable, a bit iffy on the instalove but it is whatever. knowing that this is a prequel and that the main series has nothing to do with these two, i probably won't pick them up. but it was as a cute standalone!
I am glad I read this after reading a few books of the series. It just worked best for me this time. I really enjoyed this and it wasn't anything I had to read but it was still fun to see what the other characters were referencing in the followup series.
Eh, I read this a really long time ago in highschool and out of boredom read it again. Its good for a few laughs and even though I hated it at times for its stupid outlandish melodramatic plot devices I finished it... not sure what that says about me.
All I can say about this one is, thank god Hanzou isn't the main love interest in the rest of the series. Worth a look to get the backstory for Tail of the Moon, though.
This is an awesome series! I loved this it! I read this after reading and liking Hadashi De Bara Wo Fume. And this manga I loved it! The whole story is just amazing. My second historical manga read. The growth of the main female characters is amazing. you can see it and that's why I adore her. She is her own character. It was funny and cute. And Momezo (I'm not sure about his name whether it is spelled that way I forgot) is my fav character. He is adorable, I just want to hug him. He is my fav. Then the end was amazing. The moral was good and am happy with how things turned out. I could connect to the characters. Very awesome! I highly recommend this manga series. And also last two chapters a little fast forward about Momezo was cool! I already knew about her. When in beginning when she was introduced I thought that only but changed my opinion when the main everybody thought different, I thought I was wrong but I was not lol. You will find this out after reading so go check it out!
So adorable! I would have liked to see more of Hanzou's Ridiculous Flirt side (he makes me so happy), but on the other hand it was very interesting seeing him with his game-face on. And the story did a good job with the whole Kaguya/Sara thing-- when she gets her memories back you can definitely see the change, but you can also still see Kaguya in there. The romance all happened very quickly, but it is just a one-shot so the author had a lot to cram in. I enjoyed this volume very, very much. And it's in a position to be read and enjoyed even by people who haven't read the rest of the series. Yay for flexibility!
I loved this pair. Much more that the 'Tail of the Moon' couple.
Sara (Kaguya) and Hanzo are supposed to be enemies. But when she loses her memories and is left with a scar from Hanzo, she ends up being a servant at a brothel. Again, they meet, this time, falling in love. But when Sara's memories come back, that's when the real trouble starts.
I love Rinko Uedo sensei's art. Its clean and pretty and definitely not cluttered. This is worth a read and its just a one shot, so maybe it would take an hour max to complete.
I thought this was a cute story. I'm glad that I read this before starting the series even though it was published later. I think this one is more dramatic than the regular series which seems more like a romantic comedy. Either way, I like the main characters who were the focus and I thought it did a good job of using them to introduce the guy who is probably one of the main characters of the regular series. I wonder if there's any connection between the lucky charm (rabbits tail) and the main female character of the regular series (her name, usagi, is the Japanese word for rabbit).
Decently written, but very uninspired. The character's amnesia is cured totally in minutes (one moment she's just a cute little girl, the next she has a couple flashbacks, and then, WHAM she knows and remembers everything), and even though she spent 6 months without any form of training or exhausting work, she's still as much a superNINJA Princess as she was before.
Art is okay, guys are pretty, but nothing to write home about.
Hanzou asks Kaguya if she loves him and he tells her that he loves her. Kaguya turns out to be princess Sara who lost her memory while out on a mission and was living as Kaguya after the incident. Nobuyasu commits seppuku and Hanzou brings Toku his head.

Sort of stumbled on this manga by accident. It's a pretty sweet short story that takes place before the series Tail of the Moon (which I tried to read but I couldn't stand the main character, really just couldn't).
Aww its been a long time since I read this series. Loved the characters and nice to see some familiar faces. This was an interesting but really good prequel. Made me remember why I like the series so much.
