In a land of cunning thieves, hard-bit bandits, sly warriors, and shifty gamblers, come ride with our Irish-Cherokee hero on a frontier adventure like you've never had! Paul K Brown is a retired literacy teacher from the Seattle area who lives with his wife in the San Juan Islands. He enjoys projects of all kinds. His recent writing adventures take him back to the 1870s with the Llano Kid series. Young Llano rides for justice, an Irish/Cherokee, often against the odds of being a half-breed. As of the end of 2022 there are six books in the Kid's series to chose from, with more on the way. Other titles by Brown include Aqualene, a futuristic thriller in which a young Seattle scientist faces off with Big Oil over a break-through clean fuel formula that could undermine gasoline. Also Brown has published a math supplement for primary learners, as well as a Cherokee Language supplement for reading and writing Cherokee. Literacy provides one of life's most satisfying escapes, let alone good food for the brain. Brown encourages young people to turn off the screen and grab a book to look forward to reading an hour every day! Other creative diversions for Brown include playing music on guitar and piano, gardening and mechanical projects, skiing and golf.
WESTERN HISTORICAL FICTION THAT IS A GREAT READ FOR ALL AGES
The Llano Kid: Dead Man's Gold by Paul Brown is one of those historical fiction western mystery novels that is a book that I highly recommend to all audiences and ages. If you are into a story full of good morals by the story's hero, the said hero that puts his/herself on the line for those who are not able to protect themselves, a mystery that is a brain-teaser that is full of suspense and action, this book and "The Llano Kid" books in this series is for you.
Paul K Brown has written another exceptional book inwhich the main cast of characters are well defined and you'll find yourself cheering for Llano Murray (The Llano Kid) to solve the problems facing a small frontier town in the 1870's that Is full of corruption by a few that are out to steel the gold and the mine from its rightful owner.
I have really enjoyed reading this book and the others in this series and highly recommend it to all.
Quotes:
"A man is as good as folks believe him to be."
"Unnecessary risks offered but a shortcut to the grave."
Entertaining western. The Llano Kid is on his way Californee when he encounters a dying man, with gold, and the location of a mine. There's some dry gulchers trying to get the mine, and marry the miner's daughter. The Llano Kid finds himself in a peck of trouble, as the whole town seems to be out to get him. Luckily, he's got a good rep, and some good friends, and of course, two of the best looking women in town take a shine to him.
Good old fashioned western. I think this is the second in the series that seems to be hitting its stride.
I received this book as a giveaway from goodreads. I have not read any other works in this series, nor even by this author outside of this series. I have evaluated it as a stand alone tale.
It is 106 pages long, so it has more of a short story or novella character to it. It is a western tale taking place in Prescott, Arizona. The protagonist comes across a dying man who's last wish is for his daughter to be freed from indentured servitude, by paying their debts with gold from his mine outside of Prescott. The Llano Kid is just the kind of man to be against injustice, and must honor a dying request.
Since this is a short tale, the character development is not deep, and the plot is not very intricate. It is quite full of western Cliches. After reading it, I think you need to aproach it as a quick read for pure enjoyment. It should not be taken seriously, think of it more like an episode of Gunsmoke or The Rifleman. If a quick western episode is not something you would like, then you would have trouble giving this the three stars I gave it.
Simple story of how you don't have to become one of the bad guys to beat them. Was pleased with the tempo of this western cowboy story set in the 1800's in the town of Prescott during the turbulent gold rush fever that struck those times with so much lawlessness. Hope we hear more from Llano Kid....this would make a wonderful TV series...just like the black and white westerns with a unexpected hero who saves the day.
Thank you for the Kindle book Goodreads. The Llano Kid Dead Man's Gold is an old-fashioned cowboy story. Loaded with lots of cowboy slang, Llano tells us the story of how he came upon a dying miner who asks him to get his gold to his daughter. There are only a short 100 pages of obstacles and danger between our honest hero and his goal. Llano is a likeable character in what looks like the start of a series.
This is a series that I have enjoyed in the past. In this book, the Llano Kid is just as smart, hard-nosed and compassionate as before and I really like him. I also like the realistic feel to these stories; they seem to portray a west that really could have existed. I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.
I won this book as a goodreads giveaway. This was a fine western and could be used as a basis for a rpg module with some minor modifications. There wasn't enough action for my tastes and was simplistic in term of plot and resolution. Still a fun read.
I receivedthis as a Goodreads givaway. I've never read a western before, so this was a good start. It was a decent but predictable mystery story. Would like the characters fleshed out a little more, but it is only a novella. I may voose more westerns based in this.
I used to watch Westerns with my Father when I was young and this would have made a great episode for Gun Smoke, the Lone Ranger, or others from that era.
It is a quick read with the hero, the women, and the Rangers saving the day.
I really enjoyed this book. Llano has lots of adventures and meets some interesting characters during his travel. I would recommend this book. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
This was a quick read. It felt like reading an episode of something instead of a full story. Alit more could have been done to this. Some back story about Llano. All in all it was a good quick story.
Thanks to author Paul K. Brown for this FREE Kindle copy of The Llano Kid: Dead Man's Gold.
Nicely done. Well written and edited with a nice cover design. Short, at just a bit over 100 pages, but filled with full characters wrapped in a story that moves along. A good read.
