Natan’s experience with tragedy and his ability to overcome them is shown throughout the novel. He learns to put others before himself and leads a whole community at the young age of 23. I loved hearing about how he dealt with all the problems in the community and how he changed the way people viewed the Jewish community. The ending was great and the fact that he was the last family to leave the town really portrays his selfless personality.

A personal account of the holocaust. I found the second half of the book especially interesting when he delved into the fate of the DPs -- displaced persons -- that were left without a home and without a country, trapped in the land of their oppressors after the war.
