This ARC was provided thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group.
The illustrations in this book are probably worth 5 stars. However, the content within is historically inaccurate or lacking in historical context. It's downright misleading at times. I wish it wasn't - but it's about as flimsy as Silver Ravenwolf's writing is. And had this book been writing in the 90's or early 2000's, it might be understandable. But it's 2020, and there's no discussion of cultural appropriation or closed traditional practices, and it relies on tried old tropes.
Here's an example:
page 19 seems to be continuing a coverage of ancient religious practices. But It discusses "Hermes Trismegistus," and the Emerald Tablet. It would seem to make sense if it was all a spread about the ancient world - after all the other sections include "magic of ancient Egypt," and "ancient celtic druidesses," and "Circe." But Hermes Trismegistus's writings are no earlier than perhaps the 1st century CE, and certainly not written by any ancient Egyptian. Most scholars would actually date well known "Hemes Trismegistus" works to 300 CE or later - and we have well moved out of the truly ancient world and into Late Antiquity. Actually, the Emerald Tablet is 6th-8th century, and its earliest references are from a book in Arabic. Which, makes sense! See, Hermeticism is largely Greek (not Egyptian) with Jewish and Persian influences. These texts were written in a world far more exposed to monotheist theologies than this book seems to think, and in fact, uses Judaism to steal some of its mysticism from. Hermeticism is well known for developing alongside early Christianity and Gnosticism, so why bother disguising this?
The way Secrets of the Witch is set up, you wouldn't realize it, especially because the very next page tells us that "our rituals and practices began to be judged, misunderstood, and eventually associated with the Devil, culminating in magic being taken as the embodiment of absolute evil in the Christian religion."
This is troublesome for a variety of reasons. As someone who spent the majority of my academic career working under medievalists, I'll just present the highlights:
- The ancient world (yes, even the polytheists) were still highly misogynistic, and also persecuted women who were seen to have too much power as witches
- there is zero acknowledgement of the fact that hermeticism gained most of its popularity in the late middle ages and renaissance (and was largely made for and by men).
- there is no mention of the demonization of Jews and Muslims, especially their mystical-spiritual practices and involvement in the sciences, which is an appalling oversight given who the Spanish Inquisition really targeted, the reconquista, the expulsion of Jews from England, then later Portugal and Spain. See: Joshua Tratchenberg's The Devil and the Jews for an excellent overview of how the fear of witchcraft and devil-worship was explicitly and specifically antisemitic.
The oversight is again frustrating - there's no hidden mystery here about why medieval christians called it the "Witches' sabbath" or "sabbat." The word derives from the Hebrew "shabbat" and therefore explicitly links the two in the Christian mind. The fact that the book outright argues against this (page 64) is just...well it's offensive to bring it up, half-admit to the issue, then dismiss it out of hand.
That's not to say that gentile women were not also persecuted or attacked for knowing herbal medicines and the like, but the primary targets were *not* gentile women, and there certainly were not many women who would've called themselves witches in the era. Midwives, healers, and so on might be called witch, but more often than not, these women were just nurses, more or less. Also no mention later of the persecution of romani people.
Moving on to the Renaissance, the history doesn't get more thoughtful. It thankfully doesn't try to claim 9 million women were murdered, but the move on to the Enlightenment and Romanticism is...rather shallow, honestly. No discussion of Colonialism and Imperialism, really although there's maybe two whole paragraphs mentioning slavery and voodoo (voudun). It's unfortunate, especially because this was a much larger scale atrocity than the whole of the witch trials, and yet, there's 2 measly paragraphs that mention it. It's jarring when taken into consideration the fact that our next jump is right to the 20th century and political witchcraft and feminism. No mention of a romanticism of the other, of imperialism and plastic shamanism, of the European Victorian obsession with the occult (again, from a largely Christian world to begin with).
There's thankfully no mention of Native-American practices (I say thankfully because the abridged historical section proves the author doesn't have the background to even vaguely approach it). It still feels missing, though. The sigils and amulets again show off the fact that this book is far too short and lacking in depth -- and again, no mention of cultural appropriation yet the use of Hebrew as magic comes up briefly.
Lastly, I'm concerned there are no safety warnings in the herbs or minerals section. As a blanket statement it's valuable to teach young girls to not consume certain herbs in combination with each other, or specific medications. Likewise it's good to know which stones and minerals should never be placed in a drink that you might consume, because some rocks have toxins leach out into water and you can seriously harm yourself that way. It would be excellent to teach girls how to not accidentally injure or poison themselves - certainly basic folk-medicine safety would be the most responsibly "witchy" thing you could instill, but sadly this book doesn't provide that either. (It also promotes the idea that women are connected to the moon, which is scientifically untrue, the menstrual cycle has nothing to do with the moon directly.)
I would have also liked to have seen something that questioned some terribly binary and patriarchal views of sex and gender (surely young trans girls/teens could get something from this, as well as gender non-conforming girls!) but that's not here either.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is a great book for children interested in witches, magic or witchcraft.
The book starts off with a history of witchcraft and witches and then goes on to explain about many different things relating to witchcraft - runes, tarot herbs, plants, talismans, crystals etc.
This is a beautifully illustrated book that could serves as an introductory grimoire for children.

Ein großartiges Buch für alle, die sich mit Hexen und deren Geschichte auseinandersetzen setzen wollen. Die Texte werden durch Illustrationen ergänzt. Da das Buch eher kurz gehalten ist, macht es Lust auf mehr und ist ein guter Einstieg in die Thematik.

Danke an den Verlag und Vorablesen für das Rezensionsexemplar!
Ich habe das Buch damals nur bei Vorablesen angefragt, weil ich dachte, auch wenn es nicht sonderlich viele Seiten hat, so kann es für eine erste Recherche zum Thema Hexen nicht verkehrt sein, denn vielleicht werde ich irgendwann mal einen Roman mit Hexen veröffentlichen, die ein oder andere Idee geistert schon im Kopf rum. Und dieses Buch hat mir dafür wirklich gut gefallen. Es ist wunderschön illustriert, keine Frage. Allein schon, weil es ein solcher Blickfang ist, hätte ich es unbedingt gebraucht, aber es hat mir auch inhaltlich sehr gut gefallen, weil es sehr viel über die Herkunft und historische Entwicklung des Hexen-Mythos erzählt, von dem man meist nur die Hexenverfolgung zu Zeit der Inquisition im Kopf hat.
Gut gefallen hat mir zudem auch, dass berühmte Hexen vorgestellt wurden und dem Leser auch die Welt der Magie nähergebracht wird, indem Kräuter, Steine, Symbole, Tiere und vieles andere detailliert erklärt werden.
Wer gerne mehr über Hexen erfahren will, als einen kleinen, aber feinen Überblick ist hier genau richtig!

There are two main sections : section about history of witches and witch hunts, and section that could serve as a grimoire - it contains basic informations about crystals, familiars, amulets and so on.
Throughout the first part we also get a glimpse of famous witches.
This is in no way a full compendium of witchcraft or spells, it's more of a encyclopedia, but it's a good starting place. You get a general view and if you find something that would interest you, you can research it more.
In that way I'd say it's very suitable for young witches and wizards (although I feel it's geared towards women more), or beginners or even someone who is experinced but wants to have a pretty book 😊.
The graphic design of the inside pages with stunning illustrations and "medieval" fonts is just amazing and makes me want to purchase a physical copy.
My only negative and the reason why I did not give it 5⭐ - to me, it was a little bit biased. Which is understandable but I personally prefer my witchy books without the "catholics started/stole everything" view so I felt maybe someone here has it similar, so maybe this information will help you. It's not the same as with Silver Raven Wolf, this book is trying to get more proof of facts and even though the voice of the book is partial, I did not mind it that much.
What I actually quite liked is that it's written as if the reader was a real part of the coven, listening to other witch telling tales about the history - there is often used "sisters" "this happened to us.." etc. which felt quite nice. (Or in the case of witchs hunts and trials, it felt horrible and very real).
As with every book about witchcraft and magic - take it with a pinch of salt, and take what you need. I would not be afraid of showing this book to a young witch but I feel a talk about some aspects would be needed
.

Mögt ihr Hexen und wollte mehr über die historischen Hintergründe erfahren? Dann ist das Buch Geheimnisse der Hexen genau das richtige für euch. Wunderschön illustriert ist es ein Augenschmaus. Die Gestaltung ist echt der wahnsinnig, die Zeichnungen sind eher düster und zum Teil habe ich sie als bedrückend wahrgenommen. Aber das passte vortrefflich. Denn wer ein locker flockiges Buch über Hexen erwartet, der wird sich vielleicht etwas vor den Kopf gestoßen fühlen.
Ich habe das Buch in einen Rutsch gelesen, so hat mir der Inhalt wohl noch mehr zugesetzt, da er zwischendurch nicht sacken konnte. Aber ich wollte und konnte auch nicht aufhören, viel zu fasziniert und eingenommen war ich von dem, was ich gelesen habe. Jeder weiß, dass es die Hexenverfolgung gab, hier und dort liest und sieht man es in Büchern, Filmen etc. Aber was damals passiert ist, alles zentral zusammen getragen am Stück zu lesen, ist nochmal eine andere Hausnummer.
Mir kamen beim Lesen die Tränen und es fiel mir schwer, nicht in Hass zu verfallen. Es ist keine fiktive Geschichte, was in diesem Buch steht ist wirklich passiert. Oft wird die Hexenverbrennung ausgeblendet, man möchte ja nicht an so etwas Schlimmes erinnert werden, so wird dieses dunkle Kapitel gerne totgeschwiegen. Aber diese Menschen (80 % der angeklagten und 85 % der verurteilten waren Frauen) verdienen es, dass man ihre Geschichte erfährt und das wir uns darüber bewusst sind, was damals passiert ist. In Deutschland wurden ca. 30.000 Frauen verbrannt!
Wenn man anstelle von Hexen Frauen liest, versteht man die Grausamkeit besser, die die Kirche diesem Teil der Menschheit angetan hat.

Sind wir nicht davor gefreit die gleichen Fehler wieder zu begehen, Angst, Hass und Unwissenheit vernebelt die Sinne, was man gerade im Moment sehr gut beobachten kann.
Es ist so elementar aus der Vergangenheit zu lernen und genau deswegen finde ich das Buch wichtig und weil es ein Bewusstsein schafft, was damals passiert ist.
Außerdem liefert es einen Einblick in die verschiedenen Runen, Heilsteine und Symbole der Hexen. Es wird mit den Vorurteilen aufgeräumt. Porträts von bekannten Hexen präsentiert, so wie auf die Entstehung der Hexen eingegangen im Kontext der verschiedenen Religionen. So ist es auch eine kompakte Sammlung an Wissen.

Excellent explanation of the history of witches. Very clear and well summarised along with those beautiful illustrations by Laura Pérez.

Des illustrations magnifiques et un beau résumé de l'histoire des sorcières ! J'ai moins apprécié la partie "Pratique", mais c'est une question de goût !

Gorgeous illustrations and a great simplistic introduction to witchcraft! Very happy, honestly adore this book and has led me to do more research on this subject :)

Eine interessante Abhandlung über die Geschichte der Hexerei, die sich auf die wesentlichen Fakten konzentriert und damit eine informative Übersicht über die dramatischen Ereignisse der Hexenverfolgung liefert. Dabei wird der Leser direkt angesprochen und so zu einem Teil der Geschichte gemacht. Neben den vereinzelt eingestreuten Fragen und Denkanstößen verführte dieses Stilmittel zu einer persönlicheren Beschäftigung mit den Auswirkungen und Ursprüngen der Inquisition.
Beinahe spielerisch wurde innerhalb der Texte mit unterschiedlichen Stilmitteln und Erzählperspektiven experimentiert, sodass das Gelesene nicht nur interessant, sondern auch leicht zu behalten war.
Die düsteren, äußerst ausdrucksstarken Abbildungen ergänzten die Atmosphäre des Buches perfekt und waren sehr schön angeordnet. Einige Zitate wirkten dagegen, aufgrund ihrer Platzierung, etwas verloren. Auch die unterschiedlichen Schriftgrößen irritierten stellenweise.
Alles in allem ein hübsch aufbereitetes und zugleich lehrreiches Büchlein, welches im Regal eines Hexen- oder Fantasy-Liebhabers sicherlich ein Schätzchen darstellt und dem Leser/der Leserin das Gefühl verleiht, am liebevollen Unterricht einer Magierschule teilzunehmen.

A livello grafico è davvero molto curata, per non parlare delle illustrazioni che mi hanno subito conquistata. Riescono a creare il giusto vibes e ad arricchire il testo, rendendo il progetto gradevole e intrigante da sfogliare.
Tuttavia, ammetto che a livello di contenuti ho preferito il volume dedicato ai vampiri.
I segreti delle streghe risulta un sommario della storia della stregoneria, dedicandosi principalmente alle figure più famose e alle persecuzioni che hanno poi condotto alle proteste degli anni ‘70.
Vi saranno alcuni approfondimenti a livello storico, per poi concludere con le nozioni base della wicca, ovvero: i simboli più famosi, un semplice erbario, la scelta del famiglio, le caratteristiche delle pietre e via dicendo.
Avrei preferito delle argomentazioni in più rispetto all’introduzione per principianti e un maggiore sguardo sulle biografie e sulle streghe dei media.
Nel complesso risulta un’opera interessante e adatta ai giovani o a chi s’introduce a questo genere, ma per chi è già bello che navigato può risultare ripetitiva.

Cet ouvrage est magnifique : de superbes illustrations et des textes très touchants qui expliquent clairement la situation des sorcières depuis l'Antiquité.
Il est indiqué que ce livre est adapté aux enfants à partir de 9 ans, je pense que c'est le cas mais il me semble préférable de le lire en lecture accompagnée avec l'enfant car c'est un sujet plutôt sombre et il peut y avoir des mots quelques peu compliqués. Par contre, à éviter avant d'aller au lit ^^
En bref : un gros coup de cœur !

Auch abschließend lässt sich sagen: diese Illustrationen! Phantastisch, genau meine Ästhetik, ich würde mir gern diverse Prints davon herstellen, die ich mir an die Wände meiner Wohnung hängen möchte.
Es war auch viel interessantes Wissen darin, vor allem dass genannte Frauen auch oft "zu Wort kommen" konnten, indem man Quellen zitiert hat, gefiel mir. Ein paar Ansätze zum weiterführenden Lesen bietet also auch diese Einführung.

Un libro precioso para introducirse a la historia y tradiciones de las brujas. Me ha encantado sobre todo la parte histórica, donde descrubrí que la mayor quema de brujas tuvo lugar en el Renacimiento, y también las ilustraciones. La única pega que le pongo es que me quedo con ganas de saber más en profundidad sobre los temas que trata.

Bei diesem wunderschön gestalteten Buch handelt es sich um einen Überblick der Geschichte der Hexen. Wir erfahren etwas über die Magie, das Wissen der Hexen, ihre Kräfte und Geheimnisse. Auch werden verschiedene Hexen vorgestellt und ihr Schicksal beschrieben. Im Anhang findet man noch Informationen über Kräuter sowie Heilsteine.
Das Buch ist mit vielen Bildern gestaltet und wirklich schön anzuschauen. Durch die kurzen Kapitel bzw kurzen Biografien der Hexen ist es gut und schnell zu lesen.
Wenn man nur einen Überblick über die Geschichte der Hexen haben möchte, ist dieses Buch perfekt. Doch wenn man mehr wissen will, in die Tiefe gehen will, sollte man besser zu anderen Büchern greifen.
Trotzdem denke ich, dass dieses Buch schon allein aufgrund der schönen Gestaltung ein tolles Geschenk ist.

Informative and beautifully illustrated, this book gives a fantastic look at the history behind witchcraft and magic across the world. Truly interesting and a great source for those who potentially want to write fiction based on the history.

kommt mir eher vor wie eine der Unterhaltung dienende, mega-biased Terra X Dokumentation, als ein ernsthaftes Buch für Einsteiger.
Keine Frage die Illustrationen und Gestaltung im Allgemeinen sind wunderschön. Die Geschichtlichen Hintergründe und die Vorstellungen der einzelnen historischen Hexen sind schon interessant. Und es ist ein schnelles Buch, dass man herrlich zu zwei Tassen Chai durchblättern kann. Super für meine reading slump.
Allerdings hinterfrage ich die Richtigkeit der Informationen hier. Dieses Buch wirkt eher "unseriös" als Quelle für geschichtliche Ansichten und historische Events. Allerdings bin ich auf dem Gebiet auch keine Expertin.
Und es zielt sehr stark auf Feminismus ab. Klar, die meisten Opfer der Hexenverfolgung waren Frauen, Frauen sind historisch von Männern unterdrückt und die ganze Sache hat auch feministische Hintergründe und Ansätze. Aber es hatte für mich persönlich so den Beigeschmack von modernem, social media Feminismus. Frauen Gut- Männer Böse. Very little Nuance.
Eventuell liegt das aber auch an der Deutschen Übersetzung. Das Original ist französisch und die Übersetzung kam mir nicht sehr Ernsthaft vor. Es war zwar nicht ganz umgangssprachlich, aber schon recht locker geschrieben. Vor allem dafür, dass es sich hier im Grunde um Non-Fiction handelt, die etwas lehren will. Teilweise auch komische Sätze, als hätte man alles nur durch einen Online Übersetzer gejagt. Vielleicht ist das im Original aber kein Problem und wirkt seriöser, kann ich nicht sagen...
Außerdem finde ich es ehrlich gesagt ein wenig nutzlos zu sagen, dass das Wichtigste bei allen magischen Workings die eigene Intention und Energie ist und gleichzeitig festgesetzte Korrespondenzen zu Kristallen oder Pflanzen aufzustellen...

Fue una lectura muy linda.
Es un libro lleno de información y con hermosas ilustraciones, que ayuda a entender la naturaleza de la magia, las brujas y su caza hace muchos años. Está mezclado con referencias feministas y explicaciones de por qué la mayoría de las acusadas de brujería fueron mujeres-- mujeres libres, independientes y sin hijos.
Me pareció un libro informativo y divertido, aunque no veo a una nena de nueve años leyendo sobre la cacería (cuyas explicaciones a veces pueden ser un poquitito gráficas), así como no veo a una bruja experimentada usando las actividades que hay al final. Igual estuvo bien :D

Full of information and beautiful illustrations, "Secrets of the Witch" helps to understand the nature of magic, witches and their hunt many, many years ago. Mixed with feminist references and explanations on why most of the accusations of witchcraft were made against women (free, independant, childless women).
I found this book both really informative and fun, even though I don't really see a 9 year old girl reading about the huntings (which explanations were a little graphic sometimes), nor an experienced witch using the activities at the end. Still great, though!

Love the artwork and did have some intriguing facts.
HOWEVER, super heavy focus on cis women as the only kind of Witch. The word "witch" itself wasn't strictly feminine.
The book claims to be historic yet doesn't give you the whole story, let alone give any sources on the information. In fact, I am tempted to fact check on some of the "history" it presented.
What I do know to be accurate and true is simplified and washed down.
This book feels like it could have been meant for a more juvenile audience, but since it was about witchcraft was forced to be placed in the teen section.
Yet another book recommended by multiple sources that has turned out to be disappointing. If it wasn't for the artwork I'd have given it 2 stars.

A gloomy, spooky and beautiful book that almost feels like a submersive experience.
I really liked the artwork, and I adored the mentionings of Witches in popculture. My favourite TV-Witches of all time: the Witches of Charmed, Sabrina, Hermione and even Willow got a mentioning, wich simply warms my fanboy-heart.
I also found myself to be a big fan of the single portrait-pages that are done in the book. There are only a few, but they represent historic Witches and give you a bit of text, like you where having a private conversation with them.
It's only a shame that some of the information felt really "incomplete". I missed the mentionings of Morgana Le Fay and Jeanne 'd Arc (both women where wronged because of their links to witchcraft). I do realise it's not realistic to make a 500 page full-colour illustrated history book about Witchcraft, but I wished some of the information given felt a little more complete. Also, the entire book seemed kind of angry. In everything written, I could sense an anger against Christianity and men. Afcourse, these two factors are to blame for alot of the pain brought upon Witches, but I don't believe this lifelong pain will be cured by only harvesting more anger and hate. This book is also very feminine based. This is afcourse not a bad thing, but I'll keep stating the same thing over and over again: Witchcraft is all about balance and harmony. Men and women are both equals and I would like to see some more male Witch representation in beautiful books like these.

Secrets of the Witch is elegant and enchanting. From the first page we are treated to stunning illustrations and diagrams that immediately draw you into the text.
Filled to the brim with historical witchiness and definitions, Secrets of The Witch is easy to read and to understand. I love that this book covers the impact of Christianity on magical perceptions and how it has changed the modern view on practicing witchcraft.
From Wicca to Druids, this book has everything for the budding witch or the curious. It is so easy to read and to understand, even though it reads as a history textbook. It makes learning about magical history fun.
The Practical Magic section of this title is incredible. With the medicinal properties of common plants, crystals and their uses, talismans and pendulums.
Secrets of the Witch is beautifully written and put together. Thank you to Allen and Unwin for sending me out a review copy of this title. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

⭐⭐⭐ ¿Lo MEJOR del libro? Lo bonito que es. ¿Lo PEOR? Que no hace falta leerlo.
¿POR QUÉ ⭐⭐⭐?
El texto merece ⭐⭐. Ilustraciones, diseño y maquetación (y huella ecológica) merecen ⭐⭐⭐⭐ o ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
EL TEXTO
Lo mejor que se puede decir del texto que firman Julie Legere y Elsa Whyte es que tiene buenas intenciones. Ahora bien, donde dicen “iniciación” bien podrían decir “introducción”, porque ese es el resultado. El texto parece destinado a un público ADOLESCENTE, con pocas expectativas y nimios conocimientos sobre el tema.
En la PARTE HISTÓRICA hay lapsus, saltos temporales y errores de bulto. La ubicación temporal de Hermes Trismegisto, Grecia y Roma despachadas en un plis plas, la desconcertante exposición del caso de Salem es (incluyendo inexacta mención a la Iglesia Católica), mezclar (¿confundir?) paganismo y brujería, dulcificar el Romanticismo (un período tan machista como cualquier otro)…
Más finas están al señalar al CRISTIANISMO como poder que asume el monopolio de lo sagrado, al mencionar al Malleus Maleficarum como instrumento fundamental para el FEMINICIDIO basado en la brujería y al demarcar al norte y centro de Europa como focos de las terribles persecuciones. No seré yo el que defienda a la Iglesia Católica, pero sin duda, los muy luteranos centroeuropeos son los responsables del mayor feminicidio de la historia (y aún así la Inquisición Española tenía que aparecer).
En la PARTE PRÁCTICA no entraré demasiado. Ahí ya quedan las creencias de cada cual, y las mías me las reservo. Tan solo señalar que el repaso de la simbología mágica es escaso y, por momentos, risible (“el sombrero cónico”, sic.).
BUENAS INTENCIONES de las autoras al conectar brujería con ecología, feminismo, anticapitalismo… Lamentablemente LOS RESULTADOS SON DESEQUILIBRADOS Y DESCONCERTANTES. El texto pide una bibliografía a gritos (¿¡de dónde demonios han sacado esos datos!?). Algo que habría resultado muy fácil, barato, lucido y útil. Habría dado, al menos, una apariencia de solvencia.
El rol de la mujer en la espiritualidad occidental, en las creencias ancestrales y, concretamente, en el desarrollo de prácticas mágicas son temas suficientemente amplios y sugerentes. No era necesario entrar en estas confusiones ni mezclar conceptos por más atractivos que estos pudiesen ser.
ILUSTRACIONES, DISEÑO Y MAQUETACIÓN
Ahora vamos con LAS BUENAS NOTICIAS. Como dijimos, el libro, EL VOLUMEN EN SÍ, ES PRECIOSO. Diseñadoras, maquetadoras y -por supuesto- la ilustradora Laura Pérez deben ser reconocidas como LAS VERDADERAS RESPONSABLES DEL POSIBLE ÉXITO EDITORIAL. El conjunto es sobresaliente y, si compré el libro, es por lo bonito que era. Por las evocadoras y mágicamente oscuras ilustraciones de Laura Pérez.
Las generosas dimensiones del libro, un gran acierto.
MENCIÓN HONORÍFICA: HUELLA ECOLÓGICA
En consonancia con el mensaje ecologista de las autoras, se ha buscado que la huella ecológica sea la mínima. Algo que hay que reconocer y agradecer.

En la PARTE PRÁCTICA no entraré demasiado. Ahí ya quedan las creencias de cada cual, y las mías me las reservo. Tan solo señalar que el repaso de la simbología mágica es escaso y, por momentos, risible (“el sombrero cónico”, sic.).
BUENAS INTENCIONES de las autoras al conectar brujería con ecología, feminismo, anticapitalismo… Lamentablemente LOS RESULTADOS SON DESEQUILIBRADOS Y DESCONCERTANTES. El texto pide una bibliografía a gritos (¿¡de dónde demonios han sacado esos datos!?). Algo que habría resultado muy fácil, barato, lucido y útil. Habría dado, al menos, una apariencia de solvencia.
El rol de la mujer en la espiritualidad occidental, en las creencias ancestrales y, concretamente, en el desarrollo de prácticas mágicas son temas suficientemente amplios y sugerentes. No era necesario entrar en estas confusiones ni mezclar conceptos por más atractivos que estos pudiesen ser.
ILUSTRACIONES, DISEÑO Y MAQUETACIÓN
Ahora vamos con LAS BUENAS NOTICIAS. Como dijimos, el libro, EL VOLUMEN EN SÍ, ES PRECIOSO. Diseñadoras, maquetadoras y -por supuesto- la ilustradora Laura Pérez deben ser reconocidas como LAS VERDADERAS RESPONSABLES DEL POSIBLE ÉXITO EDITORIAL. El conjunto es sobresaliente y, si compré el libro, es por lo bonito que era. Por las evocadoras y mágicamente oscuras ilustraciones de Laura Pérez.
Las generosas dimensiones del libro, un gran acierto.
MENCIÓN HONORÍFICA: HUELLA ECOLÓGICA
En consonancia con el mensaje ecologista de las autoras, se ha buscado que la huella ecológica sea la mínima. Algo que hay que reconocer y agradecer.

¡Larga vida a los libros bonitos! ¡Larga vida a Laura Pérez! ¡Larga vida a las brujas y sus secretos!

I picked up this book because it was the only other book in my library system illustrated by Laura Pérez. Her illustrations were wonderful and the book was interesting. A very beginners primer to witchcraft. The only thing I really disliked was the authors’ insistence that by picking up the book you were already a witch and then writing conspiratorially of “we.” I think this is more of a “if you’re interested in learning” than “you are already a witch.” Also the how to stuff was too perfunctory and mainly boring.

Geheimnisse der Hexen ist im Großen und Ganzen ein illustriertes Lexikon. Die Zielgruppe sind Kinder ab etwa 12 Jahren, hauptsächlich Mädchen aber auch interessierte Jungen. Allerdings kann das Buch auch für Erwachsene sehr interessant sein, besonders für Einsteiger zum Thema Hexen und Magie bzw. Babyhexen.
Begriffe werden einfach und verständlich erklärt aber gleichzeitig sehr ausführlich. Wichtige Personen der Geschichte werden vorgestellt und die Grauen der Hexenverbrennungen werden nicht verschwiegen.
Das gesamte Buch ist einfach wunderschön illustriert ohne dabei kindlich zu wirken. Die Bilder, meist in Schwarz-Weiß gehalten, sind absolut fantastisch und verleihen den Geheimnissen der Hexen noch etwas mehr Magie.

Que maravilla de libro. Unas ilustraciones super bonitas, la historia de la brujería y mucha más información interesante.
Lo he disfrutado, me gustan muchísimo las brujas y las historias alrededor de las mismas, pero sobre todo la realidad de todas aquellas mujeres que fueron señaladas como brujas por unicamente ser "más libres", sabias y conocedoras de su entorno y su naturaleza, independientes y envidiadas.
Erre zenituzten sorginak oinordeak gara.
