Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Holly Black, this long awaited third book promises even more action and romance than the last!
They broke the curse, but at what cost?
Haven and her crew may be considered heroes, but they arrive back in Penryth harboring dangerous secrets. Plagued by nightmares, Haven struggles to control her newfound magic while Bell shrinks under the weight of their shared lie.
When an emissary from Solissia shows up in Penryth and drafts Bell in a magical tournament, Haven is once again forced to follow the prince to foreign lands, this time to the bloodthirsty court of Archeron’s mother.
Trapped in a shifting landscape of dark politics, duplicitous immortals, and cruel sovereigns, Haven fights to keep Bell alive all without revealing their secret. But a terrible evil brews on the horizon. One that threatens the very fabric of the realm.
Haven might be their only hope of stopping the impending darkness. But first she must learn to accept her own darkness and follow her heart—no matter where it leads.
Welcome to the Kingdom of Runes where immortals and humans clash, light and dark magic reign, and mythical creatures lurk in the shadows. If you like fierce heroines, enemies-to-lovers romance, wild plot twists, and endearing characters, then you'll adore this continuation of Haven and Bell's story!
**The Kingdom of Runes series is upper/mature YA and contains mild cursing and adult situations, including romance.**
I just wanted more Stolas and less of everything else. Less stupidity from Haven. Less weakness from Bell. Less caricature characters. And above all, less similarities with SJM books.
As the third installment of this series, but not final book, I was afraid it would be more of a filler book than a real add to the series. I did not expect to be thrown once more in this world so fast. I enjoyed everything and I was so happy to meet these characters once more. The end was perfect; I think I can say this is my favorite book of the series so far. I could see the author growth in terms of writing and composure, and most importantly, I could see the character development that I dread so much in every book.
Not much to say because this was a good book that really met my expectance and left me anxiously waiting for the next (out november 2020).
I think this is where I’m going to take a break from this series for awhile.
While I did say in my Oath Taker review that I would be going into King Maker with a bit of pessimism, I really was still curious about this series going forward and eager to see where it would go, hopefully with some improvement in several areas of the story and writing. This is not what I got. If anything, the same issues I had with the previous two books continued, along with new ones thrown into the mix.
My main problem after having finished the third book is that I just don’t care anymore. It really hit me while reading King Maker that I don’t feel much of anything for the characters—save for Stolas, but I think this is solely because he plays on the tropes and characteristics I like in my leading men—and that I just don’t even know them well. I think this overall points to a bigger issue in that a lot of these first three books is spent doing too much tell and not enough show. Had I been able to see certain characters and relationships develop, I would have way more interest. For example, Bell and Nasira’s friendship. We start this book with them all of a sudden being besties. And it’s cute, it is, but I would have liked to have seen how that came to be rather than just having that missing time gap of when they apparently grew close.
While on the topic of Nasira, I actually did end up loving her as an addition to this story, along with Ravius. I would definitely have appreciated seeing way more of these characters, but I loved what we got of them, and they were both a breath of fresh air in this book. I also enjoyed a lot of what Xandrian brought to the table. Overall, it was nice getting a handful of new characters that were fun to read about whenever they came into a scene, and they really helped to tone down my frustration of spending so much page time focusing on characters I honestly hated.
And when I say “characters” I mean one particular character.
Fucking Archeron.
I quite seriously hate everything about Archeron. I wasn’t vibing with his character in the previous two books, but I was really trying to maintain some semblance of optimism when it came to him. However, King Maker really solidified how much I dislike Archeron. I’m genuinely curious what percentage of this book was dedicated to Archeron bitching and moaning, getting drunk because he felt sorry for himself, and taking out his anger on Haven, because it seriously felt like every scene of his revolved around him doing one of these three things. And I will say, I feel like much of Archeron’s behavior/attitude in this book was new. Yes, I never liked him, but he seemed to have a major personality shift in King Maker, which makes sense, as it was convenient for the plot. That doesn’t maker it okay or reasonable though.
To add to my fury over Archeron, his and Haven’s relationship reached such infuriatingly toxic levels in this book that there were several times at which I was altogether ready to DNF the book because I just couldn’t take it anymore. Really, their “romance” in this book felt entirely hinged on Haven feeling like she owes Archeron for giving up his wish to save her in the previous book and that’s just wrong. Much of Haven’s inner monologue about Archeron was her gaslighting herself, rationalizing that Archeron was reasonable in his anger, especially when it came to his reluctance to help protect Bell due to his hatred toward the king. No, just no. If Archeron actually cared about Haven, he would suck it up and help her protect her best friend, especially since Bell never did anything to him. But Archeron doesn’t actually care about Haven, and I think what really saddens me about this relationship is that we never have this meaningful build-up of Haven realizing how much Archeron doesn’t care about her, and how emotionally abusive he is. This would, ideally, lead to a grand exit from the relationship on the part of Haven, or at least a conversation and consequential understanding between the two because then at least this toxic relationship would feel purposeful. But, no, instead we’re left with Archeron becoming the Bad Guy™ which is a very obvious move to push the Haven-Stolas endgame agenda and further the plot, which is just sloppy and lazy, in my humble opinion.
Some other smaller aspects that bothered me about this book: •The trials felt blatantly derivative of the tasks in Goblet of Fire •I don’t know what this trope is called, but I’m going to call it the being-sad-over-someone-you-lost-that-you-didn’t-actually-love trope, and it was in here. Boy, was it in here. Bell was devastated over the loss of Renault, and being that their relationship was a bad case of insta-love, I just couldn’t get behind it.
I started this review saying I’m taking a break from this series, but if I’m being honest, my overall disinterest may lead to me just forgetting to go back and finish. I’m willing to continue and see where things lead for these characters, but it’s just something I’m going to have to put on hold for awhile.
The one-star review I gave this book does not relate to how much I enjoyed it.
Now, as I was reading this entire series, there were certain books/movies/stories/TV shows I was reminded of. I want you to see just how many there were: - the Throne of Glass series (ESPECIALLY Throne of Glass and Kingdom of Ash) - the Red Queen series - ACOTAR - ACOMAF - Frozen - Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Legend of Korra - Tangled - The Vampire Diaries - Snow Like Ashes - the story of Hades and Persephone - Harry Potter - The Young Elites series - City of Bones - The Diabloic - Storm Siren - Cloak and Dagger - Mulan
I actually really enjoyed the series when I started out, but I think that feeling lessened the more I realized these books were a huge mashup of popular media, whether it be literary or otherwise. There’s probably other references I can’t remember or haven’t experienced that this book took from. The “fans of Sarah J. Maas” tidbit at the beginning really should have said “Want to relive ACOTAR, Throne of Glass, Kingdom of Ash, and ACOMAF? Well, then this series is for you!” because I just cannot believe how similar they all are.
Also, did no one catch the way the author basically stole an idea from Maas? I know that teleporting isn’t necessarily an original power, but really? You’re just going to take winnowing and call it “threading”? It was so obvious.
And Haven. My goodness, Haven. She is just Celaena/Aelin in ACOTAR. That’s it. She looks like Aelin, swaggers like Aelin, talks like Aelin, thinks like Aelin, and is even described in the same way as AELIN. I was laughing internally at how fanfiction-y this series is. I mean, even the other characters are ones from ACOTAR and ToG. Stolas is Rhysand/Rowan, Archeron is Tamlin/Chaol, Xandrian is Dorian, Surai is Mor/Manon, Ravenna/Shade Queen is Amaranth/Maeve, Cressida is Ianthe, etc. It couldn’t be more obvious. If I wanted to reread Maas’s books, I would have taken them off the shelf in my room.
And why is Bell so stupid? He’s such a crappy, wimpy character. Also, why is he gay? I feel like he and Surai and Rook were gay just so the author could go “look at me I’m so inclusive!” Bell just falls for every single guy mentioned in the book. My word, are all gay people like that? (I know they’re not, but in every book I’ve read, the gay character literally drools over the sex they’re attracted to; not only is this disgusting, but it poses a bad image for the community; I don’t even support the LGBTQ+ community yet even I know this).
I liked Stolas up until he mentioned that figuring out Haven’s past and checking up on her became an obsession. That part had me cringing like mad. I was noping out of there in no time.
And dear Lord, the writing. Somehow it was so much worse in this last book than in the other two. I could hardly understand what on earth was going on. Oh yeah, and you know how the blurb thing promises “more romance and action”? Well, the romance didn’t start being focused on until 30-40% into the book. This book felt a bit too drawn out for my liking. I mean, an attempt at character development was made, but it just flopped on the floor like a fish out of water since these chARACTERS ALREADY EXIST IN OTHER STORIES.
Mind you, reader, I actually enjoyed this series, even though it was a much shorter version of the ToG and ACOTAR series if they were a combined. I mean, this is LITERALLY a fanfiction.
Now I’ll get to the romance. I actually liked Stolas and Haven’s relationship in the first two books more than in this one. Here, it was just lust, and I don’t like the love=lust mentality showing up in YA fantasy all the time. And when Stolas performed oral on Haven . . . 😖 It felt so awkward and weird since their relationship hadn’t really developed enough for it to feel authentic. I think there was a reason even the CHARACTERS felt awkward after. It was because the author did. I had this look the entire time I was reading it: 😟
Look, I know a lot of people like this series. I do too. There are just some BIG problems I have with it. I mean, even the part where Aelin always pulls last-minute saves out of her rear end was conveniently in this book. I’ll read the last book just to finish strong, but I will not be recommending this series to anyone. I hope the author progresses in her writing. And please, for the sake of the world, please write original stories. Believe me when I say that people enjoy them a whole lot more than a fanfiction of something millions of people have already read a thousand times. And even though I’m the type of person to go “I’m not going to tell writers what to write”, I AM going to tell you to not (re)write other popular stories just to profit from the hype!
Maybe I’ll clean up this review later, but for now, I’m going to process everything I’ve just read . . . AGAIN.

You know, half way into this book, I was gonna give it a rough 3 stars. I got to the end and my rating plummeted to 1.5. Even though I love how we get more action in the second half of this book, the overall quality just flings itself off a cliff. I can't even call this book series unique anymore because it becomes chalk full of YA tropes (especially in the second half). What happened to this series?!
CONS:
-Wait, since when could Surai change willingly into her bird form? Wasn't the bird transformation part of the curse placed upon her and Rook? Since that was broken, she shouldn't be able to transform into a bird at all.
-Surai advises Haven against binding her dark magick and says that Haven is basically letting her "fear" control her if she does this. Even though there's no one around to really reach Haven how to use and control her magick and we've seen that Haven's dark magick is beginning to slip from her control. Idk, binding it, at least temporarily, sounds like a good plan at that given time.
-The love triangle is...taken care of in this book? But I really don't like how it was handled. Why do they always--and I mean ALWAYS--have to end with either one person dying or becoming the enemy? Why can't one person just walk away and be a good sport about it? Why can't characters, who are adults or have lived for CENTURIES, ever solve these problems like mature adults instead of adolescent teenagers?
-At one point, Surai uses magick in front of Demelza and Haven notes how she isn't surprised by it. Should she be? I mean, they use runes which are basically the equivalent of magick. Top that with the little fact they know Surai is a solis--of freaking course she isn't surprised! Why should she be??
-Hey guys, 'member when Bell and the beast (aka the creature, aka I can't remember his name) were in love in the previous book and how Bell was torn up over his death? You 'member that right? Skip to now, three months later and I swear to god, if you asked Bell who the Creature was, he would be like "...who?" Like damn, Haven remembers the creature more than Bell (which is only like twice), and she didn't even know him. Now Bell's far too, too busy falling for Archeron's cousin.
-I was actually disappointed how there wasn't much to the floating island and they didn't spend a lot of time there.
-There were characters who were brought along for the journey or story that were shoved into the background-- Like Narisa, Demezla, and yes, Surai--and leave you wondering why they were even there beyond the one or two instances they actually did something or had a role to play.
-Apparently having brown hair and eyes automatically makes you "plain" and "boring" and "unremarkable" looking. The fuq? Look, I get what the author was trying to go for, but that's just downright insulting. She should have just stopped with Haven masking her appearance. There was no reason to cross that line by insulting people who naturally have brown hair and eyes.
-Take a shot every time you see "bone-white" or "bleached-bones" to describe the color white.
-Archeron becomes an alcoholic in this book and mopes in a party of self pity. He also gets insanely jealous of Stolas to the point where he acts like an utter douchebag to Haven over it. He also becomes downright possessive in the end.
-Avaline is basically an older and "slightly" more mature version of Inara from Evermore Academy. Which sucks, because I was actually curious about this woman. My interest went out the window when she pulled that Inara stunt in the trial.
-Soooo, why did no one ever ask Bell to perform magic when he trained in a separate place away from Haven? It was all too convenient the only time he was expected to show magic, for training or trials, was only when Haven was around. But when they're separated, apparently no one gets suspicious of Bell only using swords or daggers. Okay.
-Haven sets up a date with Archeron--only to blow him off for Stolas. I loathe a woman who strings two men along. Be with Stolas, I actually prefer him over Archeron, but don't leave Archeron high and dry like that. Especially not after everything he's done for her.
-Haven's protectiveness over Bell goes too far over this book. She's the equivalent of a helicopter mother. She doesn't listen to Bell. She doesn't trust him to take care of himself. She doesn't want to let him make his own choices. She doesn't let him make mistakes and learn from them. And when he finally opens her eyes about this and stands up to her about it, she gets nasty towards him. She then proceeds to take off her heel and fling into a crowd of people. Um, immature much?
-Is it just me or does Stolas seem like a different character in this book? I don't remember him grinning or being as playful/teasing with Haven in the previous books. Maybe he did it discreetly, but he was never so up front and open about it. There are many times where he didn't feel like Stolas, he felt like the freakin winter prince from Evermore.
-
(...)squirming against his hard, muscled flesh even as....inexplicably, her body rejoiced at the contact.
... ...... ............
So...Did we briefly slip into a harlequin novel or something? Like, damn. This sentence made me gag and roll my eyes at the same time. Which is bad, because I enjoy this author's writing style, but this sentence was bad. So very bad. I was literally thrust back in time when I read my mom's romance novels because I had nothing else new in the house. Also, how is Haven "squirming against his hard, muscled flesh" when Stolas is fully clothed?
-The characters have a bad habit of gouging their fingers into their eyes and foreheads. I know what the author meant, but I really think the word against would have worked better. I couldn't stop picturing them physically hurting themselves.
-Bjorn is apparently vampire-like since he can
-Haven couldn't understand a thing Bjorn was telling them. Which was...odd? Because everything clicked into place perfectly for me. I knew exactly who he was referring to, especially given the two people he was literally just talking about ten seconds prior. This was probably the clearest he had ever spoken and for plot-reasons, Haven's all "I dont understand". #stopmakingcharactersstupidforplot
-
Smiling, Avaline flared her gray wings as she prepared to jump through her portal. Haven did the same, readying her mind and body for the trial ahead.
Haven apparently has wings (she doesn't, but you see the problem here, right?)
-The writing kind of suffered in this book, if you couldn't tell by the examples I've already posted here.
-BEEP, BEEP, ALERT ALERT! THIS BOOK TURNS HAVEN INTO A SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE MARY SUE! Listen, I know a MC usually has to be or have something special when it comes to fantasy books. I'm okay with that. Very rarely will a fantasy book work with a MC who isn't special in some regard or has some special item. I'm fine with it. I understand that. I'm not okay when they're THE SUPER SPECIAL ONE. The one who everyone is waiting for. The one everyone (except enemies) will bow down to. The one who is born to serve this special role. The one seen in visions or prophecies. The one meant to become the new savior. The one who is more powerful and smarter than anyone else. Dear god. And again, we're freakin back at Evermore Academy. Just like Summer was super duper special. Ugh. Gag me. Gag me now.
-There is literally an (under)water trial in this book where characters have to compete against each other. And Haven risks winning it to save someone, just like Summer. Wait for ittt....JUST LIKE IN NEVERMORE FREAKIN ACADEMY.
- *looong ass siiiiigh* Hey, did I mention how many similarities I'm seeing between this book and her other series, Evermore Academy? Because there are so many and this is not okay. Like Stolas being exactly like the winter prince or Avaline like Inara. How Surai is only around for moral support like Mack. How the main love interest only engage in oral sex but nothing else. The stupid soulmates trope that's apparently needed be cause two people are incapable of falling in love without it. How the MC doesn't have any consequences for the majority of her actions. The special snowflake ordeal. God make it stop. I have bruises from the similarities slapping me so many times. My eyes have rolled out of my head and are on the floor somewhere. Idk how I'm even writing this right now.
I'm stopping. I'm stopping. I could go on, but I'm forcing myself to stop.
PROS:
-I love Ravius. I love him. I want more of this snarky birb. He needs more screentime.
'I have a joke for you. A mortal girl, an Ashari scout, the heir to the Noctis throne, and a clever raven walk into a tavern.'
(...) 'and the punchline?'
'They all die.'
-We finally got to go to the floating island! Which was something I've wanted since I saw in on the map in the first book.
-This book is so much bigger than the previous two. At first I was wary, because, look, I'm not a fan of books with over 600 pages. I always find such books either shove in way too many details or have way too much filler with a very small and slow moving plot. While the first half of this book has a few slow moments, they're not dragged out and things move at a good enough pace to keep you turning the page. And of course things really pick up in the second half.
-While the writing quality takes a hit in this book, this author still has a talent for giving life to her characters.
-Bell has grown a lot compared to the first book, and while I'm not a fan over him becoming so infatuated with another after only 3 months, I still appreciate his character growth. He actually tries to take action and do the best with the situation he's forced into. He stands up to Renk and gets a little snarky at times.
And that's about all I can give for pros. Compared to my cons list, it looks pretty bad. I don't know how I feel about this series. I saw things declining in the second book, but held out hope. And now this book is like a reimagined version of Evermore Academy, just with different character names and the hunger games thrown in instead of a school. I'm still picking up the next installment, because I want to see this series through. I just hate that this author is using so many themes and tropes for two different series she's writing. It feels...I don't know, lazy? I get being enthralled with an idea or ideas but if you're going to reuse it for another series, you need to be more creative with how it's done. Otherwise, it literally just looks like a copy and paste. It doesn't help that these themes and tropes are already used so heavily in just about any YA book nowadays (and this isn't a YA book!)
”And when the time comes she would end him— and it would be a mercy.”
*sighhhh* Another amazing series that would be absolutely flawless if it didn’t suffer from the whole “let me make her first love interest a villain to justify her being someone else’s mate.”
Listen if you know me you know how much I love SJM. Rhys and Feyre are one of the best book couples, BUT I’ve always said it wasn’t necessary to make Tamlin this awful person to justify that. And I’m saying the same thing with this book.
Archeron sacrificed so much for Haven in the first two books. He fell in love with her, worries over her and that was a big deal considering how much he’d grown to despise mortals because of what they did to him and his home. So I don’t understand why all of a sudden in this book the couldn’t stop arguing, he comes back with this “darkness” about him and the seer says their feelings for each other were manipulated. You’re kidding me, right??!
It’s ok for a woman to love someone and change her mind. Let’s be honest, the author had been hinting towards Haven and Stolas being chapter one of the first book when she tasted his blood. Although the mate thing hasn’t been confirmed, it’s quite obvious. So there was just no need for a very likeable and nice character to go from good to completely controlling and evil. Just say she changed her mind after she realized her feelings for Stolas. We all know it had nothing to do with his 500 year old betrothal to Avaline. Considering she knew that from the beginning!
Ok now that the rants over, haha I can say how much I loved the plot of this book. Even more magic and so many intense scenes. I was definitely not expecting that plot twist of an ending. The plot twist with Bell, Havens mother, Stolas, and definitely Archeron were all so clever and I hate that I have to wait until November for the next book.
This one would’ve gotten a 5/5 for me if it wasn’t for the things I ranted about above. But I’m still loving this series completely!!
THIS BOOK WAS MIND BLOWING! Yeah, I know that's extremely high praise, but it's because this book deserves it. It's kinda sad for all the other books being released this year because I don't know how KING MAKER will ever be topped. The fact that Grey has 2 more books in this series is crazy. The story arc, character development, world building is MASSIVE. To have the ability to love one character in the beginning of a book and by the end of it you can't stand them is incredible. She's done her homework, she know how to twist things around until you don't know up from down and left from right. Haven has faced down the mighty Shade Queen, broke her curse and is faced with yet another perilous task of protecting Bell from even greater evil. She finds out who she is and what she can endure in this adventure and nothing is what it seems. Buckle up and start this story in the morning because you wont be able to stop reading until it's finished.
This has become one of my favorite series. The world building is fantastic and the characters are complex and tug at your heartstrings. I love the different storylines that intertwine, but my heart is set on Haven coming to terms with who she is and rocking it, and Bell finding happiness and love. And Stolas....what a delightful little monster you're turning out to be. The ending of this book was so satisfying, yet heartwrenching. I'm so sad I have to wait to find out what happens next. November can't come soon enough

Shut the front door!!! I thought the first 2 books were good. I thought I knew what to expect. I thought wrong. This was insane! I’m exhausted- up all night then up again early to see what would happen and where this story would go. This was so good!
Rereading the series in anticipation of Dark Bringer
Okay this book is my favorite of the series so far. It's just SO GOOD!! There is a fuck ton of action, so many little twists and turns happening, like 3 betrayals I never saw coming and a freaking MAGIC COMPETITION.
I was planning to read this over two days, but I couldn't stop and read the whole way through in a day. This book is just too damn good. I needed more of Haven learning about her powers and the mysterious heretics of Solissia.
One thing I want to make clear though is I 500% do not fucking support Archeron and I will never ship him with anyone again. He is just the worst in this book. Anytime we shifted to his opinion, I was out bc this bitch was the worst. Not only does he continue to emotional abuse and manipulate Haven, he spends most of his time feeling sorry for himself, or getting drunk, but never actually trying to do something to fix his situation. Or like ask for help, ya know? After restarting this series I've never been on the Haven x Archeron train, because he's constantly such an asshole to her. There's a line between fun snarky banter and just being an asshole and he crossed it every time.
Anyway, let's disregard Archeron and talk about everything else, because that's why I was here. One of my favorite parts of this series is the friendship between Sarai and Haven. I just love these two and I'm so glad they always have each other. With the addition of Demelza, Narsisa, and Bell, Haven has her own little found family and I just love it so much!! Also I have high hopes for a new ship involving Bell and a new Solis and like PLEASE LET IT HAPPEN.
So much was revealed and I have a lot of theories, can't wait to be proven right in book 4!

I received a free audiobook copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own!
God I freaking love this series so much. Someone give me the next book STAT!! Haven, Bell and their friends have arrived back in Penryth but at what cost? Bell does not have any magic and with Haven's help must continually fool the court into thinking he does. When an emissary from Solissia comes to recruit Bell into a magical competition, everything is put on the line. Solis's mother's court is bloodthirsty and will test not only Bell and Haven's survival abilities but also their friendship.
I live for magical competitions and this book was no different. I loved seeing Haven come up with spontaneous strategies on how both she and Bell could pass each trial. Plus we got more of Stolas and Haven. AGH I WOULD DIE FOR THESE TWO. I just freaking love them so much. I loved seeing Haven bond more with Surai and how their sisterhood became even closer.
Archeron really bothered me in this book. He's changing so much and letting his anger take control, which makes me sad. I also absolutely hate that he made Haven feel like she had to bind her dark magic to make her feel worthy of his attention. Like BLEH. Solid nope from me on that front.
Bell also really grew in this. He still has some guilt and grief to unpack from his trials in the first two books, but he is slowly healing everyday and becoming an amazing soon to be King. He also had a flirtation going on with a certain Solis and I ship it but I am unsure if the Solis in question returns Bell's affections, which like PLEASE DO.
The ending of this basically gave me whiplash. So much was revealed and in the best way possible. Like I am so here for everything that's about to happen. I feel some other revelations from Stolas will be coming soon and I am STOKED.
Why oh why! This review is one of the hardest because I don’t want to give spoilers buuuut....Why oh why!
I knew something was coming. I continue saying I usually dislike love triangles because of how they are usually solved and this book is a great example. And I leave it here...
After Curse Breaker being an action-packed book, the pace in this one felt quite slow as new characters and a new plot were introduced. I quite enjoyed it though as the world-building keeps growing and it is one of the things I love the most about this series. Once the trials started, I could not stop turning pages! I am so invested in the characters and Haven and Surai continue to be my favourites. I was glad to see Bell becoming stronger and more independent. Archeron and Stolas...oh well.
After that ending, I cannot wait to read Light Singer and I will continue crossing my fingers for some wrongs done to some characters to turn into something different.
She understood now that they all had monsters inside them. Desperate, clawing, ravenous beasts that craved power and control. They fed off shadows and hatred, fear and jealousy, and rage—that most of all.
Well, that ended up well.... *satisfied sigh* I kinda enjoyed this series. The first two books were OK. I had fun, nothing mindblowing. That's how I started this book. Reading some pages before going to sleep. And then... Holy shit! It took off. It grabbed me and dragged me through hell and blew me to bits and left me staring at the words trying to make sense. I had to take one star out because I really can't stand Bell (he is a whiny, spineless child, that I mostly want to shake until he finds his dormant brain and starts using it) but then I gave half back because it was just a great read!!!
Now, I know that some are talking about similarities with other books. I admit that there might be a couple. But it's just that. Details that remind us of other beloved books. I see them as such. Proof that we have read great stories and we are lucky that we find new ones.
If I had to use a single sentence to describe this book it would be- An exciting, epic adventure quest filled with magic and heartbreak. Audrey has basically ripped my heart out and left me in a sad puddle with this installment, which I did not know was possible after the hot mess I was in last books due to all the feels.
I want to rant and discuss this in detail, page by page, since I am so worked up about everything that happened, but I am trying to reign in my fangirling and angst so no spoilers here. Just know that this was so freaking engaging, I read it over the course of a single weekend, and I had to talk myself out of throwing my ereader a few times due to reasons while reading.
There was something that happened at about 20% through the book that I was ready to have an intervention for Haven. You should never change yourself and what makes you you for somebody else. If a certain guy (or two in this situation, but for different reasons) can't accept you, then forget them- ok, rant over. Haven has so much emotional turmoil already and then the hurt and scorn she receives from others about who she intrinsically is made my heart hurt so much for her.
So there are two guys who could potentially be romantic with Haven, one she has already established a romantic relationship with and he sacrificed so much for her well-being (which is still not a good reason to stay together, just saying) but the other has accepted her for what she is and has taken the time to get to know her as person and trusts her completely. In case it was not obvious, I know who I love and root for and his comments at the end of the book made me want to cheer and steal him away for myself. I have no idea how everything will play out but you can be certain I will be waiting (not so patiently, mind you) to find out.
Storyline: Wow! This took a big jump in a positive direction. Grey picks up where we left off, but she throws in some amazing twists and shocking surprises. The last 30% of the book I think my mouth just stayed open. I am so amazingly please with this 3rd installment!!
FMC: Haven is straight kick-ass/bad-ass woman ! She puts all the pieces together when it comes to her love life, her purpose, and Stolas gives her the most important piece .... her lineage.
MC: Stolas has now stepped up to the THE one and only MC and I can not be happier!!! Finally I have a love connection with no confusion or feelings of missing ingredients to this series. Thrilled with the choice Grey made regarding Stolas would be an understatement. She created the connection with the MC I have been missing in this series and it was worth the wait!!
Secondary characters: Finally are evolving. There is a connection with each of the players now making the world a much better place for this reader.
Where do I even start? I am simply exhausted and wrecked after reading this book. This series is a favorite of mine and I have been invested in this story from page one, book one. I'm still kinda reeling from King Maker though. This book for me was an emotional roller coaster and when I say that, I don't mean a normal emotional roller coaster, I mean a wrench your guts from your body, play with them a while and put them back emotional roller coaster. Haven has to be a personal favorite character for me. I don't think I've ever been this speechless for a review...I'm simply stunned. Although I'm ok with how this ended, I'm still utterly heartbroken... Audrey Grey definitely is not afraid to delve into messy. Words can't describe this book, so if you want an epic and I mean epic journey, please please pick up these books. Can't wait for book 4!!
King Maker by Audrey Gray is one hell of a story with twist and turns and the ability to check all of your emotions . This 3rd book in the series did not let you down , and if you haven't read this series then stop right here and go get book 1 because this is a have to read series . The main characters are fleshed out perfectly and you can't help but becoming vested in them and you have to know what the choices they make good or bad brings about . The world building that Audrey has done is on par with any author writing today it is simply excellent . King Maker draws you in and doesn't let go , once you start you have to keep reading and pages go by and just one more chapter keeps up way past your bedtime . I've no doubt if you've read the 2 previous books that you will definitely be reading this one and as I said prior if you haven't do yourself a favor and pick this series up and be prepared for one hell of an adventure . So go buy this book read it , enjoy an amazing story then take a few minutes and leave a review because who knows your review might be the reason someone else buys this book and has the chance to enjoy this amazing story .
I can't get over how masterful the storytelling of this series has been leading up to this truly epic third installment of the series! I laughed, I groaned, I gasped in shock, shouted, and yes, cursed. This series keeps delivering above and beyond what I've been expecting. And I'm simply blown away by the beauty of every betrayal, heartache, and revelation that cumulated to the ending of best book of the series so far. All I can say is--if you weren't a fan of Stolas before, then that might be changing. Bring on book 4, I need a cure for this massive book hangover! Highly recommend this series!
I just finished this in the middle of the night on a work night..
I keep telling myself one more chapter and I will finish tomorrow... but I can’t.
This was so freakin’ good. Not that it would be a surprise because the 1st two were amazing. This series just keeps getting better and better. With each installment there are new twists and turns that keep you enthralled.
I got this book as an ARC for my honest review and honestly I am speechless. Cannot wait for the next. #teamStolas
King Maker is the third installment in the Kingdom of Runes series. I'm honestly really enjoying these books so far. The audio's make thing my life so much easier due to how crazy things are going in real life. I still look at the ebook from time to time, though, just in case I misheard something or needed to back track just to make sure I didn't miss any teeny tiny details.
When it comes to this world, everyone has their own fair share of secrets. Some definitely come out towards the end of the book and my mind was completely blown by them all. So with that little cliffhanger, I'm not even sure what to predict for the next book. I'm probably just going to sit back and relax while chaos unfolds.
Other than that, the magic and romance just gives me life. Even though I didn't really get why Haven wanted to bind her dark magic to a certain someone.. because the reason behind it all was just super dumb. I do not approve this message people. Oh, and I also don't like Archeron. Like at all - he needs to go.
In the end, I'm definitely excited to get my hands on the next book just to see what's next adventure-wise. Or maybe even revenge-wise. Either way, I'm here for it all.
This book started off with annoyance after annoyance for me with Haven. Hairbrained schemes one after another is what I came to expect but it seems like she's not learning to be cautious at all as the book goes on. Lacking knowledge about most things, at least early on, only to drive forward where caution may have better served was just ridiculous. Her devotion to Bell is admirable but I couldn't help but find myself frustrated with them both, mostly Haven, for not letting him stand on his own. That Bell was constantly belittled by his own family and brother while cowering more often that not made me wonder just how old he was a time or ten. Faking his magic for him and basically cheating for him through trials so that he won was eye rolling for me.
Speaking of, she shows up at the sun court in disguise. Although her appearance is altered, does no one recognize her voice? Her mannerisms? Her parts of speech? Her attitude? The way she walks and talks? The intricacies of the spell aside, does no one wonder how she and Bell are already thick as thieves right away and question the cause? I mean, come on! I would have at least thought Renk would put it together or even the King or Cressidia.
I hated the way this book portrayed Archeron. It's been a while since I read the last book waiting for this one to come out so I continuously wondered what the heck I had missed. How he and Haven went from being together to him being her enemy was distasteful and I hated every second I had to read about how far their relationship deteriorated. As for a twist, I wasn't expecting that at all.
And then all of a sudden, Haven switches up to "friend" this and "friend" that when it comes to Archeron. Hunh? What happened to barely keeping her hands to herself? And he can't stand the scent of her magic so much now too? Like she's not the same mortal girl he's always known all of a sudden? Add to that, Haven binds her dark magic because she's afraid of herself and her nightmares instead of trying to master the magic. Just makes no sense.
And how is it that no one seems to know that Bell doesn't have magic? If Haven sees the runestone, surely someone else must have as well.
Haven used the excuse that she can't be with Archeron while he's promised to another. Yet Stolas is also married...soooooo??? Is the fact that Stolas is a prisoner to his marriage the justification here? Contradictory much?
Then why is Archeron hearing voices and going crazy all of a sudden? His psyche can't be that fragile given what he'd endured up til that point. I really just disliked what the author did with his character in this book.
Stolas was a favorite similar to the last book. The dark prince showed up finally in person for a big portion of this book and is no longer relegated to dreams. This development does not disappoint as we get to see Haven spending time with him and how he helps her in the trials.
That Bell ends up having magic was another twist I didn't expect along with the reveal as to the identity of the blood mage. I'm kind of still interested in the story but not really feeling it anymore after all of that above but I think changing Archeron to a villainous foe ended it for me.
I really enjoyed the new characters and how Haven and Bell grew emotionally. They got out of their shells and it was delightful to be on the journey with them.
As promised....third book, total review. THERE MAY OR MAY NOT BE SPOILERS, DEPENDS ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT.
Just one thing before I hope on in here. Can this not be the last book of the series Audrey Grey?? Pleeease!? There is so much you can do! A spin of if it's not a continuation! Please!
...
Okay...I got that out of the way.
Book 1: I enjoyed the first book. It wasnt high high up there on my list to be honest but it intrigued me to the point where I wanted to know how it ended. The ruin magic was new to me and I really enjoyed that. Oh, and I totally fell in love with Bell. Just sayin lol.
Book 2: Omg! I love it! It went straight into it, no hesitation and complete and utter heart wrenching to boot. To me its definitely a mix between lord of the rings and beauty and the beast, (which by the way was brilliantly set only in book 2, I loved your twist, bravo, made me cry) which may sound strange, but trust me. It was SO worth it.
Book 3: I only really need 2 words to describe this book. -cheifs kiss- LOL I mean it, this one also gave off different vibes then any other one of the first books. The majestic sights and tournaments that were held were originally and creative. You gatta love a creative soul.
Whole thoughts: The romance....ah...the romance. It was splededly done. And can I just say Audrey, that I was rooting for them the whole time? From the moment she tasted the blood, i was dead set on them as a pair lmao, just saying. But also...Archron...(this one hits me(that's my sons middle name) so so hard it hurt) I understand why he did what he did...but omg did you have to do that to me though? He was so pure and good and to end as a hollowed shell...again bravo ...
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I will be picking up more of Aubrey Grey's work. It was truly a pleasure to read.
(UPDATE) Just found out the next one is being released in November. AHHHHH!
King Maker follows on from the last two books after our girl Haven has broken the curse crippling her land 👊 but bearing the title of Curse Breaker comes with certain challenges and dangers for both her and Prince Bell.
We get thrown into Solaria the land of the sun lords and get thrown curve ball after curve ball 🔥 the whole book is action packed and fast paced in typical Audrey Grey style.
I found this has a little slower start building to a bigger crescendo. Just an observation if you'd read the other books 💁 if you loved ACOMAF by Sarah J Maas you'll love this book. It's got the similar action packed, angsty Romance twists and thrilling reveals👍after finishing I found myself so satisfied with everything. The storyline was well plotted and came together perfectly. The action was realistic and exciting and the romance... OMG MY HEART. That's all I'll say 😂
Once again my Kindle notes for this book are HILARIOUS. Early on I figured out a certain person being a see you next Tuesday and then when it happens in the book my notes are rampaging 😂😂😂 there's also a lot of beautiful quotes but I don't want to share them because they might be spoilerish 🙅
Either way, read this series! It's breathtaking and beautiful and every book is brilliant 😍
I have read all the books so far in this series and I have to admit each one takes you on a different, but same journey. The journey is up and down and twists and turns. But this book has to take the cake of them all.
Many things happen in this book and you find yourself not wanting to put the book down because you just need to know what is happening. There are so many twists and turns in this book you find yourself going back and reading certain passages just to make sure you aren't seeing things.
You will be like, I cannot believe that just happened, oh know he did not just do that. Or she did not just do that. You will be picking your jaw off the floor many times. You will find yourself crying a lot because the emotions that you go through in this book or just wow.
You will find yourself wondering if you should feel sorry for certain characters or not. I know I am still reeling over a couple of them because I just can't believe that it happened the way it did. Maybe you will feel heartbroken in the end? We will just have to wait and see.
I tried, I promise I seriously tried, but after about 5 chapters I couldn’t contain my excitement, basically bursting at the seams to know how this was going to end, I won’t lie I went to last 10% and read the ending!! It was everything I could have possibly hoped for! Haven is right up there with the best of them! So I returned to the beginning of Haven’s 3rd story and strapped myself in for the ride! I devoured this book. It had everything you could wish for in a fantasy...actually in any great book! I already miss Haven and the rest of the gang....I think it’s time to return to the beginning with Oathtaker and inhale the journey all over again! Audrey Grey, you’re amazing. I always buy my books electronically... and only with my favourites do I buy in both hard copy and ebook..it looks like I’ll be adding Haven to my bookshelf right up there with Kate Daniels, Mac and Freyre! CANNOT wait until book 4 comes out. I can only hope it’s not a long agonising wait!
