I received an ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a really fun middle grade fantasy graphic novel with surprising depth. As an adult reading it I was definitely able to see the unfortunate parallels to our non-fantasy world. I love the diversity in the team that conquers evil in this installment of Meesh. And the ending moral and message that Meesh really only needed the love, respect, and faith in her from herself.

This was such a cute graphic novel! The author did a great job of making sure you can jump right in even if you haven’t read the first book. I loved the colorful graphics and feel like they really brought the story to life. This book also has a really great message and was delivered perfectly. I thoroughly enjoyed this adorable, action packed story full of fairies and magic.

Read this if you like:
→ Magic & adventure
→ Diverse characters
→ Fairies, demons, werewolves

Thanks to the publisher for a gifted copy.

I read this book as part of the blog tour hosted by TBR & Beyond Tours. Special thanks to Knopf Books for Young Readers for providing a digital ARFC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. 4 stars

The Secret of the Fang is book two in the middle-grade fantasy graphic novel series about a young demon who wants to succeed at doing good. I enjoyed this continuation of the story from book one and what the secret was about. While the story reaches a well-rounded ending, I do hope that we get to return to this world for more adventures with Meesh and her wonderful group of friends!

The running theme throughout this series is about believing in yourself and I loved how that’s further explored in this book, not just through Meesh’s character but through Nouna, Xavier and Chai. I adored this friendship group and how they support each other despite their marked differences. We see them all struggle with some form of insecurity and it is lovely to see them find their confidence as the story progresses. This group have come a long way, especially Xavier the ex-bully who’s now their bestie, and I found the friendships so wholesome. I loved seeing them all band together to save the day! 😍

Other issues Lam explores through this fantasy world in a very accessible way for young readers to understand are racism, bigotry and xenophobia. I love a complex villain and that’s what we get in this story. Lam delivers a character whose actions are unconscionable but their backstory is heartbreaking and will likely be relatable to many who have encountered prejudices and unjust actions simply for being born. We all react and process trauma and fear in different ways but I liked how Lam presents the consequences of society's past actions in the present day.

The artwork also needs to be mentioned and praised because I loved it so much! I loved the contrasting colours of each city and how well they captured the vibe of each location and the citizens that live there. However, my favourite part about the artwork is the way the character’s emotions are so perfectly captured by Lam. You can read the range of emotions they experience on each character's face—from excitement, anxiety, frustration, pride and joy—it was beautifully captured and made the story come alive for me.

The Secret of the Fang is the second book in the Meesh the Bad Demon series. In the first book, Meesh turned out not to be your ordinary demon, she didn't behave or act in the ways a demon should. Well at least in ways that bad demons do. In the latest book, Meesh is learning how to be a Guardian from her grandmother. While also honing her skills. Meanwhile, her new friend Chai and her werewolf pack were forced out of their temporary home in the forest of Ponderosa by a bulldozer. Unable to return to their home as it was demolished, they're once again displaced. Meesh, Nouna, the Fairy Princess and Xavier, a demon offer to help Chai and her family. Hoping to discover the perpetrator behind all of destruction in the forest, Meesh and Nouna disguise themselves and infiltrate the camp of the masked villain in an attempt to discover her plans.

I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel's blend of fairies, demons, and fairy-demon hybrids. The artwork is really well done and conveys a lot of emotion. There are strong messages on the harm and injustices of discrimination. Past injustices were revealed, and amends were finally able to be made. Each realm (Plumeria City, Magma City and Ponderosa) finally found a benefit of working together.

Meesh is such a sweet character, her empathy for her realm having been a part of the wrongs done and her desire to make things better were truly commendable. Additionally, I loved that she extended kindness, even to those who caused harm. The story illustrates that we all can make mistakes, and through forgiveness and collaboration great things can happen. Included at the back of the book is a section on the making of the graphic novel, including pictures of brainstorming ideas, outlines, and a few of the authors rough sketches. I would recommend beginning with the first book to have a better understanding of the characters and overall plot.

**A huge thank you to Banholzer PR for the E-ARC in exchange for an honest review**

A fun, dynamic and relevant sequel to 'Meesh the Bad Demon', with many callbacks to the first story (seriously, nothing is forgotten about), expanded worldbuilding and history, and actual stakes and threats. It continues the story of young Meesh and her friends, and feels like it needs to exist.

There are themes of friendship, family, community, believing in yourself, and overcoming your insecurities - the usual, predictable fare - but also deforestation, destitution, prejudice, scapegoating, displacement, homelessness, classism, late stage capitalism, creation and destruction differences, and weapons of war. It's about how division for any reason destroys us all in the end. It is a violence, a poison - in this case, it is literal.

There's a clear divide between the children who are passionate fighters and want to help and do something, and the adults who have lost hope, are jaded, and have become complacent (or who are just too embarrassed to admit their mistakes, and won't do anything about them now). Scared. Helpless. Angry. Silent. Under the guise of "protecting" the youth, aka the next generation who will suffer the most from the previous generation's dangerous, shortsighted, colossal errors in judgement (and plain old ease and laziness, hindering progress). They need to take responsibility, as well.

Like its first volume, 'Meesh the Bad Demon: The Secret of the Fang' is not as wholesome as it appears, but it's still cute! The characters are cute and likeable. The artwork is wonderful - colourful, sweet, shady, shadowy, dramatic, expressive, and plum fresh! - as is expected, and it suits the book so well.

In this subsequent, final (?) volume, we find out what happened to Meesh's mother, and why Meesh lives with her grandmother. And - slight spoiler - the big bad problem is not sorted this time by magic. Not the way you'd expect, anyway. It's not an ultimate-magical-girl-transformation-waves-wand-and-sparkles-fix-everything solution at the epic climax. The ending may surprise you.

Kindness, compassion, understanding, working together, and learning from past mistakes and building bridges must be the answer, for us all to survive.

'Meesh the Bad Demon: The Secret of the Fang' could have done a little better with its character development - especially in regards to Meesh, as the protagonist fighting for attention in the sea of so many other characters. Scenes, events, plot elements and plot threads happen fast; the pacing - throughout the book on its own and in its transition from volume one to volume two - isn't quite as smooth and seamless as it should have been.

But it's an adorable children's action fantasy comic that doesn't get too dark, that isn't too violent, with a 75% satisfactory ending, with a bright, hopeful future for this fantasy world. A world where a girlchild at heart like me would love to live in.

Wonderful, wonderdust stuff, containing vitally relevant real life messages.

I hope 'Meesh the Bad Demon' becomes a cartoon series or movie someday.

Final Score: 3.5/5

What a beautiful, awesome, and beautifully awesome middle-grade graphic novel!
My daughter loved the first book in the series. She was obsessed. I had to see what it was she loved there so much, so I read the first book also. And I have to admit it makes sense. The book was perfect.
Then I saw that there was book two coming and of course I had to see it. And. Omg. It did not disappoint! I feel like this 2nd book might be even better than the 1st one.
The artwork is absolutely perfect. The characters have depth and meaning. The storyline flows effortlessly. The book has way, way more depth than most graphic novels usually do, yet it reads easily and it sucks you in.

I loved the true tenacity and fearlessness of the characters of this book.

Chai & Meesh were definitely an unexpected pair. And Xavier too, if you count the trio.

The way they worked together to overcome what was happening to Chai’s family. The artistry, the character growth.

Phenomenal.

Meesh the Bad Demon: The Secret of the Fang is the second beautifully illustrated fantasy book in this series that continues Meesh’s journey with genuine heart. Perfect for middle-grade readers, this graphic novel explores powerful themes of resilience, friendship, forgiveness, and inclusivity.

Through vibrant artwork and a rich, imaginative world, author-illustrator Michelle Lam brings to life a story that champions kindness and self-acceptance in the face of prejudice. Meesh is a lovable underdog who grows stronger not just through battles, but by learning to understand others - and herself.

A touching and empowering read that encourages young readers to embrace who they are and stand up for what’s right.

What worked:
Meesh has become the Guardian of the Underworld but she lacks confidence in her abilities. This is understandable in new heroes so it’s nice to see she’s not an immediate expert. Meesh’s eyes turn red in the illustrations to let readers know she’s tapping into her powers. Meesh has several friends who are willing to help and it takes her a while to realize she doesn’t need to save everyone by herself. Princess Nouna is a fairy who is trying to shake off her image as a media personality. Xavier is a demon who feels less than adequate when he compares his talents with the others. All three of these main characters undergo growth and transformation as they try to defend the Underworld together.
The Underworld is full of drama as a result of previous injustices. Characters are comprised of demons, fairies, and demon-fairies and demon-fairies are the outcasts. Assumptions and prejudices are aimed at the demon-fairies but most of the current characters seem unaware of them. Meesh isn’t happy with what she learns and she’s determined to make things right. A major obstacle is the new leader of the demon-fairies is focused on revenge and doesn’t have any plans to get along with the other creatures. A new weapon is nearing completion that will wipe out everyone in the Underworld.
The author’s illustrations clearly show the different settings found in the Underworld. The pictures allow readers to visualize the forested Ponderosa, the darker world of Mount Magma, the beauty of Plumeria, and a new underground city. The characters have distinct appearances which help readers instantly recognize them in each scene. This may seem like a small detail but it’s not always the case in graphic novels with creatures. There are many unique characters throughout the story and the author uses noticeable facial expressions to communicate a range of emotions. Several flashbacks enhance the story and different-colored text boxes help to differentiate the past from the present.
What didn’t work as well:
The backstory isn’t immediately evident if you haven’t read the previous book. Meesh is Guardian of the Underworld but the meaning and significance of that is not immediately evident. She’s the one demon able to fly but it’s not clear what her other abilities might be. Also, there are graphic panels without words where what’s happening isn’t clear.
The final verdict:
It’s helpful for young readers to see dynamic characters grow into better versions of themselves. The story shares the importance of kindness and forgiveness. Overall, this graphic novel presents a thoughtful tale and I recommend you give it a shot.

I haven’t read book one, but the author did such a great job of making sure new readers would be able to quickly pick up what happened during the first part of the story! I loved the storyline and especially the graphics. They were well done and a few scenes really had me chuckling! Meesh is a “bad” demon meaning she doesn’t act the way she supposedly should, and I was glad. She’s very unique and she cares for people even when others don’t believe they deserve it. I’ll definitely need to get my hands on book one, and any others that come out in this series!

Ponderosa’s forests are being destroyed, putting fox-kind, trees, demons, and fairies in harm’s way. Guardian Meesh and Fairy Princess Nouna had no choice but to get to the root of a laser machine built in the forest. As they uncover the dangerous plan, Meesh gets captured. She soon learns the harsh truth about the injustice that gave rise to feelings of hatred and acts of vengeance. As she tries to reason with her captors, Meesh learns about the extent of her powers. To save the forests and her friends, she must make them understand that it is vital to make space for all to thrive, before it is too late.

Michelle Lam builds upon Meesh’s story arc in her second book, the latest addition to what promises to be an engaging graphic novel series for young readers. Lam expands on the magical and adventuresome antics with Meesh, Nouna, Xavier and Chai. In "Meesh the Bad Demon: The Secret of the Fang," the crime-fighting friends face all adversity with trust and having each other’s backs. Guided by her duty to serve others, she finds ways to brave through the most challenging times, even when her magic is not as potent. Meesh recognizes that her greatest power is in being her true self.

Although there certainly is magic in this follow-up to the previous Meesh the Bad Demon and Meesh takes her new role as a Guardian seriously, the plot also focuses on prejudices and the assumptions we make about others, which elevates this story from many others. Meesh's friend Chai is in trouble. Just as his family starts to feel as though they are home, they are attacked and forced to leave. While the blame for the violence quickly falls on a familiar suspect, as Meesh works to save the lands that are threatened, she uncovers the reasons for the violence, hatred, and mistrust among the fairies, demons, and fairy-demons. The seed of hate was sown many years ago, but it's based on an assumption that is simply not true. Perhaps some readers will recognize their own prejudices while reading this graphic novel with its appealing, relatable characters and intense Photoshop illustrations. This book and the entire series do a fine job of turning the tables on what it means to be a "bad" demon while reminding readers that strength and magic lie within each of us.

Meesh is back in this action-packed sequel that retains the heart and messaging from her origin story: be true to yourself and believe in yourself. This graphic novel is high-paced with barely a moment of rest, keeping the reader engaged, but sometimes lacking in overall impact. Meesh is off to save the world once more with her band of friends, who come off more one-dimensional than in the first book, now that all their problems have been solved. Despite that, the introduction of fairy demons worked well within the story and there was a very altruistic ending. Readers of the first book will enjoy this followup, as it continues to showcase Lam's fun art style and Wheeler's beautiful colors.

Kudos to Michelle Lam for crafting a thoughtful and well written book. I didn't realize I was jumping into a series as this is book #2, but I got everything I needed from this book to not feel left out of the first volume. The art has a simple but appropriate depth to it, and the characters truly jump off the page. This story has bits and pieces for everyone, and I believe the age range is 11-13 year olds. My oldest daughter enjoyed it and binged read this book in one day. That alone gets me to check it out and see what's the reason behind this fever-pitched reading pace. Meesh bands together with Fairy Princess Nouna to save the underworld (which I gather from this volume happened in the first volume as well). The characters show very organic growth through their trials and situations. A great book.

I liked this volume as much as the first; it has the same emotional and epicness as the first, but if I hadn't read the previous volume, I would still have understood the characters, their choices, their background, and their motivations. In this one, we get insight into the villain's origin story, and the conflict brings everyone together to act, not just the kids, the chosen one, but all as one, including both sides that look at the other as being the real villains. Great themes, artwork, and emotional bits. For friendship, acceptance, family,
and teamwork. Perfect for fantasy readers who love awesome characters.

I absolutely love this series, Meesh is adorable and I love her friends she has found and brought together. I didn't think a sequel could top the first but I love how this story really pulls together themes of building relationships and also healing wounds. I think it has a great message about how we can still make amends for past issues. It is a little more on the elementary side as it gets cleaned up a bit nicely without as much conflict as we see in middle grade novels. I'll still add it to my middle grade library as I love the artwork and so do my students and they eat up the story as well.

While I still enjoyed this sequel, I was not as "into it' as book one. I think the story of Meesh becoming the Guardian was more fun than what she does as Guardian. OR I should have read them back-to-back. Maybe a longer single book would have been better?  Regardless, I enjoyed this story. It is fun, bouncy, colorful and modern while taking on a familiar, classical story of being yourself, friendship and kindness. I might not read book three (if there is one) but I will be recommending Meesh and I'm looking forward to finding more works by Lam.

The Secret of the Fang is a second book in Meesh the bad demon novel by Michelle Lam. I loved this book as much as I loved the first one.

The first book was about Meesh finding herself and saving her home, Mount Magma. In this book, Meesh and her friends were trying to protect the world. First of all, I loved the back story of the villain; it made more sense and was more realistic in this middle-grade fantasy novel.

The found family trope has always been my favorite, and this book did justification for the trope. Once again, Meesh proved that one doesn't need any external thing to prove their worth; everything we ever wanted was within ourselves.

Just like the first book, the illustrations are my favorite. The colors, the artwork, and the expressions of the characters were so well pictured. This book has its own charm, cuteness, and powerful message to it.

Overall, "The Secret of the Fang" is a delightful and inspiring continuation of Meesh's adventures that will captivate readers of all ages.

👧🏻reviews: this is such a cute graphic novel. The storyline is adorable and easy to follow and I love the illustrations. The facial expressions, the silly conversations and the “heroines” showing up in the story are some of the things that made me laugh and smile while reading it. I went through this quickly and there’s nothing negative to say about this awesome graphic novel. Also, the fairies and characters are so diverse that it’s really funny and silly. I enjoyed it so much and I know you’ll like it too.

This awesome second part releases today, and I was so happy to read it. I totally adored Meesh in her first adventure and this second one maintains all the found friendship power and adventure and adds some amazing content:
🥳girl power
🥳debunking prejudices
🥳stronger found friendships
🥳teamwork
🥳lessons in staying true to yourself
🥳adorable manga-inspired illustrations
🥳magic!

It can be read as a standalone but I also highly recommend the first one.

A high three stars. Cute, and I do wish we had a bit more of a recap about what had happened in the first volume (I know there are flashbacks here and there), especially as there seems to be a timeskip in terms of how old Meesh and the rest appear.

But otherwise, I liked the idea of fairy demons (even though the name is a bit...there) and Meesh's forgiving nature really comes through, which is a wonderful message. It all still felt rather rushed, which was unfortunate.

This was a fun graphic novel. The positive is that I didn’t feel like I needed to read book 1 to keep up. The characters are great, and I loved their friendship. The way they support each other is admirable. I also enjoyed how Lam tackled difficult subjects, such as racism. It was well done, and I appreciated it.

I really wanted to enjoy this because I LOOOOVE other works by Lam 🥲 but sadly I didn't…

There were multiple inconsistencies, errors, weird character actions, and general weird pacing. (I wonder if production on this volume was rushed??) Also, what are the personalities of any of these characters? This sadly wasn't for me. 😞

Cute and fantastical middle grade graphic novel featuring Meesh and her friends as they must save the day. Very obvious themes of persecution/racism, but I think it's great for it's target age.

Kid1 says it's not as good as the first book, but they still enjoyed it. Chai the little werewolf is the best.
