This book is a collection of historical essays written by Zhang Hongjie. It consists of four parts: characters, events, life, and words. With its distinct styles, the book introduces and comments on five historical characters (Wu Sanngui, Zeng Guofan, Cixi, Yuan Shikai, and Zhu Yuanzhang) and historical events such as imperial examination system, ancient excruciation, Chinesization of Man nationality, and ancient recluses. There are also essays about the authors reflections on life and his travels. The book also includes a postscript and Moyans preface. Besides, there are 60 illustrations in the book.

有些好处,也有重复,也有偏见,倒是这样的书对从未系统学过历史的人而言值得一看,也就算是推荐了。

听完了。作者用散文化的语言,传达了关注现实的洞察力。从历史人物的生活经历出发,加以心理分析,观察种种选择,让人读起来更觉身临其境。对吴三桂、袁世凯这种前后反差似乎极大的人物也对了一些理解。而对一些中国文化的特质,作者也有很精彩的论述。静态文化中孕育的忍耐与残虐,是真实中国历史中的阴与阳。
