Find power in your prayer like never before with this inspiring guide from #1 New York Times bestselling author Bishop T.D. Jakes.
In a time when women carry more influence than any other generation, the power of prayer has never been more important to remind us that we do not have to bear our crosses alone. We need prayer to stand guard over our hearts and minds and over the hearts and minds of our families.
Women today are shattering glass ceilings and forging new paths in the world. What Happens When a Woman Prays is a clarion call for women to continue their progressive march of empowerment by dreaming like their daughters and praying like their grandmothers.
Through exploring the lives of 10 prayer-filled women of the Bible, Bishop Jakes emphasizes the life-changing power that women have when they find their identity, their strength, their healing, and their voices in Christ.

This book is very simple and a very quick read. It’s not complex and I have heard much of what I read before. What I love about this book is it just brings you back to the basics of faith and highlights powerful prayerful women of the Bible and how our own stories can be intertwined with those from the Scriptures. This book is fairly uplifting which my soul needed given the world as it is today in 2020.
I will answer their prayers before they finish praying. Isaiah 65:24 CEV
This was the right time to read this book. I intentionally read it slowly. Focusing on the role of each woman mentioned in the plan of salvation. I highlighted, underlined, and made notes. I read and highlighted every Bible passage mentioned. And I prayed at the end of each chapter just like the woman the chapter was about.
It seems fitting that the book concludes with the story of Anna.
Anna was a woman of prayer. She was a woman of great faith. She was a woman awaiting the Savior. Likewise, during this Advent Season we should be praying, keeping the faith, and awaiting the celebration of the arrival of our Savior.
"The world needs women who are strong in prayer. The world needs more women who are conduits of God's strength and God's tenacity and God's passion" (pg.136).
"When Women Pray" is another excellent read by T.D. Jakes. The author shares in detail inspirational stories of 10 women from the Bible: Hannah, Mary, Sarah, The Woman with the issue of blood, Naomi, the Samaritan Woman, Esther, Rhoda, the Shunammite Woman and Anna.
Jakes talks about the power of prayer (and the importance of prayer and fasting): "When women pray, God brings new life." "When women pray, they find hope and joy in unexpected places." "When women pray, curses are turned into blessings." "When women pray, people are set free from bondage."
This is a very easy to read, quick book. I highly recommend it!
"Jesus is the Living Water. He is the Bread of Life. And He will provide exactly what you need when you reach out to Him in prayer" (pg. 110).

Women throughout history have been turning to prayer to change to world. When Women Pray by T. D. Jakes focuses on 10 women of the Bible who changed the world through prayer. From lesser known women like Rhoda and the shunammite woman to Mary and Esther, Jakes shares how each of these women used prayer to make a difference. He also relates each of these women and their situations to the world today.
I found When Women Pray to be an interesting book. I learned some things about Bible women that I did not previously know and was also reminded of some that I did know. At the same time, Jakes wrote this book this year and shares his thoughts about writing during the Covid-19 pandemic, which I found especially interesting. Jakes is also a black preacher and he shares some things from his perspective as a black man that helped me as a white woman see things a little differently. I found the book to be easy to read and understand. I think it is a book that would speak to young Christians and those who have been Believers for awhile--as well as a plan of salvation for those who don't know it. He brings the Biblical information to the reader in such a way that it is easy to relate to our world today. I would recommend it to anyone. I also felt inspired both encouraged and inspired as a praying woman through When Woman Pray.
I received a copy of this book from Faithwords. All opinions within this review are my own. #SponsoredbyFaithwords
I enjoyed how each chapter takes a biblical character and imagines the story from her perspective, including her feelings and thoughts. It's a good reminder that these women were imperfect humans too. Jakes ties each character to a principle of what happens when women pray, and how it can change your world. I don't often mark books, but this e-ARC has quite a few highlights.
So much truth in this book. To hear the stories of so many important ordinary women from the Bible and to be able to relate to each one of them and to learn that prayer has so much power is inspiring! A must read for all Christian women!
I went through this book, a chapter a day and it was filled with many spiritual lessons that I never really took into consideration. I felt as though someone saw my relationship with God and used these 10 women to help me overcome the challenges I face in my daily walk with Christ
I like TD Jakes and his "Woman Thou Art Loosed" forever changed me and so many other women. In this book he takes ten women from the pages of the Bible and shares how their prayers changed their world and ours. I love the introduction, several pages of background, and this line, "This is a call for women in every community to dream like their daughters and pray like their grandmothers." Having come from a long legacy of faith and praying women, the book drew me in with each turn of the page. I recommend it for all women of faith to find their special calling and purpose on their knees, in their closet, praying!
I’d recommend this book to every single woman that desires to improve their prayer life. 🙏🏽 This was such a great read! Definitely highlight worthy!
Bishop T.D. Jakes does an excellent job at putting a contemporary spin on the stories of these 10 phenomenal women. And after reading When Women Pray, I feel so inspired and empowered to pray more fervently. I loved reading their stories and reading what Bishop had to say in relation to everything. I’ll probably read this one again before the year is over.
I felt like this book was mostly the author’s own interpretation of scripture… lots of “what-ifs” & maybes. There are many ways to teach others about the Bible without contorting/twisting God’s messages. To me it seemed like the author was making very far-fetched assumptions that simply may or may not be true. Just not my style of preaching!
The lives of ten women of the Bible are reimagined in a persuasive encouragement for all women of faith to utilize the power of prayer. Hannah - God brings about new life; Mary - God brings redemption and reconciliation; Sarah - women find hope and joy in unexpected places; the woman with the issue of blood - women gain victory over the "issues" of life; Naomi - curses are turned into blessings; the Samaritan woman - women are quenched of their thirst; Esther - women gain victory over injustice; Rhoda - women are set free from bondage; the Shunamite woman - even what is dead can find life again and Anna - people find salvation. So much to gain; one reading is not enough.
Loved re-reading the stories of some of the biblical faith leaders and how their prayers and faith overcame tough circumstances and they entered into the promise of God. Very applicable
Good read! As women we don't realize how much power our prayers have and this book is great at explaining this through some very special women in the Bible.
Love this book. I’m currently reading it for the second time. I definitely recommend this book to women who are questioning whether God heard their prayers or whether their prayers are effective.
This is a collection of 10 Bible women who changed the world with prayer. Each woman's story has been modernized to understand the message behind them and the impact of their actions in the present times so relevant. Being encouraged to remain steadfast in faith through prayer especially during this Covid 19 era. It was a beautiful uplifting book to end my reading year.
Sometimes preachers need to be careful how they explain the word of God, there are many people that do not read the bible and only read or hear the preachers. This is a quick and easy read, but is too basic and lacked to elaborate more on the principal topic that is prayer.
Giving this a 3.5.star rating. For me, I wasn't 100% connected to this and I didn't learn much from it. However, I think it is a great book for many other women. Being where I am spiritually, I didn't learn much, but this was a good read.
The points on prayer were great and the use of scripture was good. As a book on prayer and women of the Bible this was absolutely great, but in terms of information for someone who has studied on these women and has grown in her spiritual walk this wasn't as edifying as I thought it could be.
A wonderful reminder of the importance of prayer and the strong women of the Bible who held onto God regardless of their circumstances.
Favorite quotes: "[...]you can recognize that if God chose to birth a blessing in your rivals life, then He has the power to birth that same blessing - or an even greater blessing- in you. "
"In the same way, God knows you. God values you. God sees you in the midst of your circumstances, and He wants you to know His promises are true for you. The blessings He has promised apply to you, and they are coming for you. Don't settle for anything less. "
"Because when women pray, they find hope and joy in unexpected places. "
"We have a spiritual enemy in this world, and he will work overtime to make you believe you're not enough. He wants you to think you're not righteous enough to bring your requests before a Holy God. He wants you to believe you're not humble enough if you pray for something you need. He wants you to believe you're not meek enough if you ask God to stand next to you in battle. He wants you to believe you're not joyful enough if you approach God's throne to pour out your despair. Don't let any of it work. [...] Because the overwhelming message of God's revelation through scripture is that you are more than enough. "
"When you've been consumed by bitterness, you develop a desire to consume anything that will get the taste out of your mouth - anything that will rinse the sourness from your heart. "
"She willingly chose a more difficult path in the present so that she could hide from her past. We do the same today. We make the same effort to hide away the parts of ourselves or the moments from our past we deem to be inappropriate for public view. "
"Sometimes people who have been hurt are the hardest people in the world to help.[...] Nobody fights harder than someone who is drowning [...] You can get killed trying to help somebody who's hurting, and thats the dynamic Jesus encountered at Jacob's well. "
"This world is filled with solutions for your thirst. The economy of our culture is built on inflaming every kind of thirst inside you and then selling you false promises to quench those thirsts."
"Don't deny your needs. Don't deny the pain you feel. Run to God! Grab hold of Him and refuse to let go! Because He is able to bring your dreams to life, even when it sure looks to you and everyone else like they died long ago. "
"But the thread that binds them together into a quilt that warms the heart is the thread of faith and prayer. That thread unites their stories and creates a common power. Please do not forsake your own uniqueness to live up to what others expect from you. [...] I believe He will use your journey as a source of warmth and comfort for this cold and often lonely world. Your faith will shape each piece of your life. It will stitch together the ragged edges of past mistakes as well as knit and weave your accomplishments and future conquests. "
When Women Pray: 10 Women of the Bible Who Changed the World through Prayer by T. D. Jakes Publisher: FaithWords Genre: Christian Release Date: September 29, 2020
When Women Pray is a book about the power of women praying by Bishop T.D. Jakes. I had not previously read any of his books, but had heard some of his messages.
This was a beautiful book, with wonderful stories about Mother Theresa, Mary, Sarah, Naomi, and Esther. I learned something new about each women in this book. I loved how this was a book meant to lift women up within the world around them, encouraging women to do great things, and a reminder that women are backed by the power of prayer.
I'm so grateful to T. D. Jakes, FaithWords, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.
“Because when women pray, God brings reconciliation and redemption into the darkness of this world,” T.D. Jakes writes in his book, When Women Pray: 10 Women of the Bible Who Changed the World Through Prayer.
~ What ~ This two-hundred-and-twenty-four-page hardbound focuses on women in the Bible who prayed and trusted God to change their circumstances. After an introduction, there are ten chapters, followed by a conclusion and notes. Using mainly the New International Version of the Bible, verses are sometimes written out and referenced throughout the chapters.
In this study book, the author promotes the power of prayer and how it can change lives, especially for females. Focusing on iconic Biblical women, the chapters range from sixteen to twenty-four pages each. Covering Hannah, Mary, Sarah, the woman with the issue of blood, Naomi, the Samaritan and Shunammite women, Esther, Rhoda, and Anna, it rewrites the characters’ stories and explains how their actions can be applied to current day in regard to praying.
~ Why ~ Reading about the many women of the Word who relied on the Lord is refreshing and needed these days, especially for ladies who want to get closer to Him. I enjoyed the way the bishop correlated the past women to how we women can find hope, redemption, victories, and freedom in our lives.
~ Why Not ~ Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not see the value of a book on prayer. Others may not like that the book is written by a male and sometimes incorporates men in the Bible too when it is touted about women.
~ Wish ~ This book may not be in-depth for those who are committed to their prayer life praying for others and not only themselves. I wish it did not include the often personal input by the writer.
~ Want ~ If you are looking for a book on Biblical women who prayed and got results, this may be helpful, but note it was written by a man.
Thanks to Hatchett Books for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
I got this book as a birthday gift from a loved one, so I determined to finish it timely and review my learnings with her.
I loved the look and feel of the book; the title especially drew me in. But I can’t say that much about the content. I believe the book could’ve been developed further to include more life examples in addition to the women in scripture.
My major down experience in reading, was when the writer made reference to a few of the 10 women who were the main subjects of their chapter, (Sarah and Naomi for instance) and implied that although we didn’t read them pray out in scripture, their silent whispers, longings and desires were good enough to inspire a reader to pray. I think anyone picking this book to read would be looking for more than silent whispers, desires and longings to inspire and motivate them to pray.
A quick and easy read, but I was expecting much more from a title that deep.
