This was a nice and quick introduction. This book is better suited to teenagers however as at times it felt very basic and obvious - so it is suitable for beginners.
I was attracted to this after a recommendation from book partners Moneybox who I’ve been with a while now. Their round up accounts allowed me to save even in the midst of my debt struggles. #Merky books when I researched them is a partnership between Stormzy and Penguin books to bring in some new voices and empower new generations.
It’s one of their collection of ‘How to’ books and while small it packs a big punch. I’ve worked in banking and I’ve been in debt bad enough to need a debt repayment plan so I’ve been able to see both sides of finance. My family have had problems with money in various ways going back a few generations. I had to find out the hard way how best to look after my finances and get the most out of money. For those that have yet to do so this is a really good book to get you started. It covers credit, debt, budgeting, savings and investments. One thing I really liked about the book is the chapter on financial wellness. Thinking back to my own debt and how low it brought me mentally this is a vital chapter as far as I’m concerned.
It gives the basics and a starting point. It’s great if you haven’t the financial skills at present & want to learn. Could it have gone a bit deeper? Possibly but then that’s what follow ups are for 🙂
On the one hand it has some good passages, and I can definitely see how the philosophy of the author might be useful for someone who hasn’t been exposed to similar material before.
On the other hand, some of the advice and the philosophy in it is very vapid and shallow, and some of the financial advice (not too much as the book goes on tangents a lot) is wrong. As an example, the author advocates yield hunting for your emergency fund, potentially at the cost of its liquidity profile. To be more specific the author says that Monzo pots are okay-ish but you should go for better yielding options. The reason this is wrong is that your emergency fund should be available in a moment’s notice to deal with, well, an emergency. Monzo pots are fantastic in this regard, with the money available immediately. Better yielding options in the current environment have much worse liquidity profile, with the money available in days at best.
I could maybe recommend it to a very beginner on personal finance but even then I think I’ve found significantly better material before.
This was a fantastic well written book that speaks plainly and openly about everything you need to know about finances- without the annoying complex jargon. After reading this book I received a clearer understanding on credit, credit cards, APR, ROI, Investing and so much more.
A massive well done to Bola and her team!
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get their finances in check and understand all the nitty gritty details about how to grow your finances whilst avoiding sinking into debt.
A phenomenal book. A concise, clear and accessible guide on how to save, invest and manage finances for the better. It is a critical read and I feel this should be on the curriculum in schools nationwide - being money savvy is a life skill so few of us learn without hardship. Financial knowledge can be accessible and it can be understood well, this book proves it. Thank you, Bola!
This book was helpful! The advice is quite basic but still valuable, and it explains credit and stocks in an easily understandable way. I think this book would be good for people struggling with debt, personally I wanted to read it for advice on savings and it had some but I don’t feel that it helped me massively. This would be good for young people learning to be financially independent.
great little pocket size truth bomb full of facts, advice and do’s and dont’s of the financial world. It gets you thinking outside the box and certainly makes you more aware of your finances.
Whether you want to save, are in debt or want to invest Bola Sol provides some useful insights and info to help you start your journey.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is completely new to finances... I have been saving for a good few years now so some chapters weren’t as helpful as other however they were still interesting to read! My favourite and most helpful chapters were Credit and Investing!
Good, clear, simple book around personal finance. I would say for me the coverage was a bit basic but it's always good to get back to basics when it comes to money. This is a great short book for those wanting to realign their finances, or can be used as a straightforward introduction.
I liked this. Focused and to the point. Good for beginners or went feeling stuck in a rut. It has some good bits of advice for fixing/sorting your finances and how to have a healthier relationship with money in general.
A practical book that I could have done with years ago! Really made me sit and reflect on past and current decisions (the good, bad and ugly). There are always improvements that can be made with finances, and I now have this book to go back to and reference when I’m stuck.
A short and accessible guide to personal finance - everything they never taught you at school. Very amused by the typo in this that misattributes a Mean Girls quote to Clueless.
A very simple guide into the realm of finance but works for those just getting started and needing a jump board to understand debt, investment, saving, and more. There are some helpful tips and some links to go further with each section
Bola is amazing! I love this book as it is genuine and outlines the key facts, studies and financial advice. Bola even talks about her personal experiences also in this book which I felt was good as you can gain an insight into her humble nature. I enjoyed it even more as bola is from the UK although born in Nigeria she was brought up in the UK which helped me connect with her even more. I suggest you also check out her Instagram page. It is informative and engaging.
Definitely recommend this book to everyone, however whilst reading it, be honest with yourself first or else the book becomes redundant and you would not benefit.
I would always remember to bet on myself always .The odds are always in my favour.
